drastically for dogs waiting to get rescued.

Part of my mission is to

promote rescue, rehabilitation,

and re-homing of dogs. There are

millions of homeless dogs in the

world, and a large number of them

are currently in shelters waiting

for one of two options: a forever

home, or death. Often, people

are reluctant to adopt shelter dogs

because of certain preconceived

They are in a shelter because there is

something wrong with them.#1 This myth comes from com-

mon misunderstandings about

how dogs wind up in shelters in the

ÀUVW�SODFH���7KH�SHUFHSWLRQ�LV�WKDW�dogs end up in animal shelters be-

cause they were strays, they were

seized in police raids, or they were

aggressive. So, they will tend to

run away, they will have emotion-

al problems because of how they

were treated, or they are just vi-

cious.

But, in reality, a big reason

that dogs wind up in shelters is

because they were given up by

their owners for reasons that have

QRWKLQJ� WR� GR� ZLWK� WKH� GRJ·V� EH-

havior. A lot of families give up on

WKHLU�GRJV�EHFDXVH�WKH\�FDQ·W�DIIRU�them anymore, or they are forced

to move to a place where they

FDQ·W� KDYH� GRJV� RU�� ZRUVH�� FDQ·W�have a dog of a particular breed.

So, next time you want to

add a dog to your family or pack,

DGRSW� GRQ·W� VKRS� �� \RX·OO� VDYH� D�OLIH�DQG�ÀQG�D�IDLWKIXO�IULHQG�DW�WKH�same time.

Dogs also end up in shel-

ters when expectations and reality

getic dog living in a studio apart-

ment, or that lap dog that was

so cute in the pet store became

uncontrollable and dominant be-

ing but affection, affection, affec-

tion, so the dog never had any

rules, boudaries, or limitations.

The only inherently wrong

ZLWK�D�VKHOWHU�GRJ� LV� WKDW� LW·V� LQ�D�shelter, and not with a loving fami-

ly.
