his wonderful book was thought of, elaborated and designed by the students of the Foreign Language Program; English Intensive Level IV Group No. 5 in the first T semester of 2012. Our book is a quick overview of different ACADEMIC MAJORS

studied by 18 students of the course. Their idea was to describe the area of study; propose a student profile; propose a professional profile; describe the main areas of

study; cite possible post-graduate programs; propose the impact of such professional in the community; write his/her thoughts on his/her personal goals; and finally, give

his/her own conclusions. This was a very good idea because it created an awareness of PROFESSIONAL ORIENTATION, as it is called in our country, that can be useful to

future undergraduate students not only here at this educational institution, but, in other institutions; and now, my students and I can be carriers of interesting and important information and perspectives to new aspirants to the majors described in this book. Many thanks to Sebastian M. Moreno T. who had the patience and invested precious

time to put our book together.

The anthropology is the study of the humans and their social, physical and material development. Academic, the anthropology is associated to the social and human sciences; in some of its branches the anthropology has a close relationship with other sciences such as molecular biology, anatomy, ecology, among others. According to her/his specialization, an anthropologist can work in public or private, commercial or scientific research, consultancies,

government institutions, as a teacher and others.

An anthropology student has to be ready for reading, travelling, discussing, writing and arguing. The anthropology becomes a lifestyle rather than just a major; it will allow the student open to multiple perspectives of observation and interpretation in research and everyday fields. To be an anthropology student you will have to develop your skills related to questioning and curiosity about human beings and humanity.

7

Page 10: professional orientation

Professional ProfileLike we said, the anthropologist is a person prepared seeing the world and the science through diverse perspectives. He or she is a person trained in research tasks (writing, reading, design), field (observation, methods, techniques) and a laboratory for physical, linguistic, social and historical anthropology as well as archeology, like general branches

Anthropology in the majority of the universities of Colombia has five principal branches: the social anthropology that studies the communities and societies throughout the ethnology; the physical anthropology that studies the humans and their social development by the analysis of biological-organic remains both archaeological and forensic cases; the historical anthropology that deconstructs the way that history has been built and counted; the linguistic anthropology that looks for constructions and social expressions through the written and oral languages;

Post-graduate programsAround the world you will find hundreds of offers in numerous graduate specialties. Bogotá, Colombia has the MA and PhD options in social anthropology and archeology at the National University, the University of the Andes and the Javeriana University. According to the specialty are suggested countries, for example for forensic anthropologists Argentina, Colombia and England are recommended.

and finally the archaeology that analyze the social development by the material remains of past societies. The diverse fields of the anthropology can be used in pro of the communities helping with joint legal and social environmental consulting, researching constitution and health of people who came before us, recognizing the true identity out of prejudice and in many other ways that each researcher may discover.

8

Page 11: professional orientation

Sources of employment

Like we have seen there are so many fields in which and anthropologist can be work. Actually, the most important source of employment in Colombia is the consultancy because of laws that include social and archaeological evaluations in environmental impact assessments for a wide variety of works including civil, electrical or architectural. However in my perspective, the most interesting way to employment for any kind of anthropology and scientist is the investigation, it can be funded by public and private national or international. Other interesting types of job are: being part of ONGs, in those an anthropologist may serve as an assessor, project designer, also could make administrative career. Finally and commonly, the majority of the anthropologists are teaching in Universities along the world while they work in other projects.

Personal GoalsMy personal goal in the short term is to be a graduate of anthropology in 2012 to start my MA in bioarchaeology. My main goal is to initiate mid-term and extensive interdisciplinary research in the region Urabá Chocoano from the perspective of bioarchaeology and like a social-political contribution

Conclusion

The anthropology is a major full of possibilities about the interchange and contact with other majors, cultures, countries and people. This is a great option and choice for students who are looking for an undergraduate without limitation that allows them to explore their curiosity about the past and present of humanity in relation to their diversity. This is a major that teaches us to transgress the boundaries between sciences for the general science through all kinds of mental and technological means.

R To study architecture is something not much conventional, when one person beginning this major his point of view about the word change, the perception of the objects that us surrounded is like elements that built the space in which live. The student understood that the multiple forms to live the world according the type of person or societies and the context of the times are represented through of the architecture, from the design of a small house to the design of a

large city, always promoting better quality of life for its inhabitants.

General objectives:The variety of forms to learn architecture is many, the resources most common for an architecture student to express their ideas are the drawings and models, but today the technology has advanced, three dimensional models and photorealistic videos are new ways to showcase projects and ideas as if they were built, these are tools to represent academic exercises, and there is great variety, but the issues studied in the academy are more specific, the topics most popular at the universities is urbanism, history and theory, technology, heritage, architectural design and project, among others, in this document I willl show you a summary of the emphasis that students do in some areas of the architecture above named.

10

Page 13: professional orientation

Examples of methodologies to design a building:1. Construction of an idea at this stage the most common tools are the sketches and models, so you can support the argument of the project2. Renders give a very similar to reality; can show construction details and building relationships with their environment3. The building built is the last stage of the project, ideas become reality, the building can inhabitSpecific objectives: since the architecture includes tracks from different disciplines and the architecture student can study on a theoretical basis, but the architecture in its deeper origin is studied from the fact built, this causes a permanent confrontation between theory and practice and on this basis student of architecture must support their proposals in the different emphasis, in this case will show some examples of the work being done by the students of urban design, heritage, technology and architectural project.

1. Emphasis in urban design: The architect develops the project from the urban structure of cities, the analysis of the dynamics that characterize the big cities and their repercuicion in control of the territory. Urban projects are carried out by large areas and rarely discuss the unique house.

3. Emphasis in technology: The objective of this emphasis is the study of architectural project from the solution of its functions in coordination with the structural system, the multiple alternatives for solving technical problems of a building ranging from the easiest ways to more advanced technologies.

2. Emphasis in heritage: Emphasis on equity develops its theme from the importance given to historic buildings and conservation in parallel with the new construction of the modern city. Some fields of great interest is the work of restores architects and their participation in the intervention of the historic monument.

11

Page 14: professional orientation

4. Emphasis in an architectural project:It is defined as the study of architectural project to project as a primary source, which is an analysis in the design of new buildings, in other words, is the argumentation of the new facts from more architecture.

Architecture is both the process and product of planning, designing and constructing. Architectural works, in the material form of buildings, are often perceived as cultural symbols and as works of art. Historical civilizations are

often identified by their surviving architectural achievements.Architecture has to do with the planning, designing and constructing form, space and ambience that reflect

functional, technical, social, environmental, and aesthetic considerations. It requires the creative manipulation and coordination of material, technology, light and shadow. Architecture also encompasses the pragmatic aspects of

realizing buildings and structures, including scheduling, cost estimating and construction administration. As documentation produced by architects, typically drawings, plans and technical specifications, architecture defines the

structure and/or behavior of a building or any other kind of system that is to be or has been constructed.

ProfileArchitecture is a vocational career, so it requires passion of the students as well as creativity, and imagination. The architect is an artist and must be sensitive to everything human, to translate in his work. The architect communicates through images, which implies that it is skills in volumetric and graphical representation, which requires training. This means that schools of architecture are taught classes in drawing, freehand, technical, or software programs. However, the use of technology does not replace the drawing of the architect, but you get a tool to carry out their fantasies.

Studies

Ÿ Architecture in National University has four main lines of study; projects, technology, representation and history and theory.

Ÿ Projects: It is completely dedicated to projects design, in different fields of study like housing, public and private buildings, urban design and public spaces and many others.

Ÿ Technology: It is the study of structures and important systems of buildings. Ÿ Representation: In this group found all kinds of representation architectonic like blue prints, draws and others

between artistic and technical.Ÿ History and Theory: It is a review of origins and evolution of architecture and how it influences all aspects of our

lives

Post-graduate Studies

If the architect wants to continue his formation, there are multiples degrees in doctors, bachelors and masters here in Colombia or in the rest of the world. Architecture is a global job, in all worlds it is needed and is present. All spaces, houses, buildings, parks, stadiums, churches, etc. There are different kinds of architecture depends the culture, religion, social, political and environment; and architect has the responsibility to make a better world to live

14

Page 17: professional orientation

I think with my work I can do a better society, and I can make a better country, increasing the knowledge and the Colombian workforce to become in leaders in this art in the world.

To conclude, architecture is, maybe, some of most important work to develop of human beings, and to be more comfortable in where we live. Of course, always thinking about the environment to protect our planet

IntroductionArchitecture is the art of projecting and designing spaces, structures and buildings for the human being, with the

architecture the life of people nowadays take shape and describe how the people see their culture, their life style is determined by it in many ways as is the art we all use and we all need.

Profile of the StudentThe person who wants to study architecture must be a person interested and aware of the dimension of spaces. This person must have a good expression in terms of drawing, writing and speaking. The student must be able to work in groups and alone attending to the different points of view of his mates and teachers always having a critical position of his or her own. The students must have a wide capacity of creativity and imagination towards his/her work as a designer of spaces though for the people to live, work and do all kind of activities.

16

Page 19: professional orientation

Profile of the ProfessionalThe architect must be able to give architectural solutions that respond to the need of society, based on economy, environment, aesthetic and technique.S/he can also be part of the making of big city projects concerning buildings, urban areas, aiming for the social and cultural aspects of the place the work is being done. The professional can be part of any construction and must be able to work with other professionals such as engineers, economists and construction workers among others.S/he can be part of any investigation regarding the principal topics of the architecture, since its history until the new techniques and materials that have been appearing with new technologies.

Subject of Study One of the most important part of the major is the housing architecture, because is the way we as architects build city and is around it that every other activity is made, around the house life, study, work, fun and all that we do is concentrated and becomes one of the most important thing for us, if not the most how and where we live.

Post graduate programsActually an architect has many possible areas to make a specialization:ŸConstruction and new techniques ŸSafety in construction ŸTheory and history of the architecture ŸUrbanismŸHousing architecture ŸDesign and projects direction

The architect and the communityArchitecture is one of the professions that affects more the life of the people if not the most because we are always surrounded by it, the way we live, the way we interact with others and with the city in which we live, with this discipline we are able to improve the life style of people providing housing, equipment, open areas, organizing the cities in order to give the best possible comfort for the people to have a good life.

17

Page 20: professional orientation

Sources of employmentAn architect has many options of developing his knowledge:The first one would be to work with public entities in big projects concerning problems that need to be solved at a big scale. The second possibility is working with private groups designing and constructing buildings and urbanization projects. On the other hand, s/he has the possibility of even making her/his own company doing private designs in different scales and working with other companies in developing new areas of the city among other things.

Personal goalsMy first goal as soon as I graduate is going to Spain and doing an specialization and also going around Europe to see the culture and the architecture there; then I am coming back and I would love to have my own company of design, not only architecture, but, also interior design, publicity, graphic design and a little bit of everything about designing. Of course I want to study a technological major in graphic design and work with some of my college mates.

ConclusionsEven though there are many majors and many roads for everyone to choose there is one that is always with us even if we do not tell and is the architecture because always we go to one place to another changing the environment around us but always see buildings, houses, structures that creates a city, and the cities are built only by architecture.

Architecture is the art and technique of planning and designing buildings, other structures and spaces that form the human environment. For the ancient Greeks it was the chief architect and director of construction and architecture

was the art or the art of who was on the project and directed the construction of buildings and structures.

Profile of the StudentI as a student should be able to understand how people live and carry out daily activities, which are different according to cultural traits, with his time, place, and before that, I must adapt to each time and place, bringing my creativity to use of space and suggesting ways to function and aesthetic expression, and also create meaningful spaces where humans can develop all kinds of activities

19

Page 22: professional orientation

Profile of the ProfessionalIn my profession I will have critical thinking and research aimed at improving the quality of life and quality of the activities of man, and solve the needs of the context, applying knowledge of design and architectural construction.

Areas of StudyThe topics in the curriculum relate to architectural components in which the architect must drive for academic and professional development. These themes are: representation, architectural design, history and theory of architecture, technology and city and territory.

Graduate ProgramsGraduate programs are directed to the issues of the emphasis on undergraduate project, which include architectural, housing project, project equity, technology project and urban project

The Architect and the CommunityThe aim of the architect is to contribute to the community always in respect to the urban context, physical or cultural place where you are working, undertaking to the positive development of society affected by the architectural and urban construction.

20

Page 23: professional orientation

Architecture and SocietyI as an architect I can work for and with society, or I can work in the commercial field. In both options there are various sources of employment, because the architect can work in any field, because you are looking to create spaces where human beings can develop their activities, no matter what.

My GoalsMy goal are to create business, and work architecture with an emphasis toward the construction, and introducing the environmental development projects, is important today to create both internal comfort of the architectural object as to respect the environment.

My ConclusionsIn short, the architecture should be for society, and should focus on the needs of users by allowing living spaces, creating heterogeneous and diverse spaces that are able to integrate without distinction to those who need them.

ssOne of the greatest skill which has been obtained by man is to modify the environment at his convenience,

including obviously the transformation of natural resources (raw materials) to produce finished products useful for the people.

Chemical engineering is responsible for creating the necessary processes of raw materials to become a useful final product, and who this process can be cost effective and ultimately, because of all the damage has been done to the planet, responsible mainly for the extraction and processing of raw materials, for this reason, the

development of cleaner production processes has become a constant for chemical engineering, reaching even to create environmental engineering.

Profile for the future student:An aspirant to be a chemical engineer should be a wide observant of physical phenomena, has to be creative to use the most convenient way to perform processes, therefore, s/he should be someone interested in science, physics, chemistry and mathematics. These capabilities will make it much easier to acquire the skills and tools that are given and learnt through the undergraduate program.

22

Page 25: professional orientation

Profile for the Professional:According to the educational institutional project of the department of Chemical Engineering of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá campus, a graduated chemical engineer must be able to innovate, research, teamwork oriented, create businesses, design and improve new processes of chemical, biological and physical transformations, and can establish dialogue with specialized national and international communities. Thesis work, elaboration a research document.2. Doing an internship with a related industry.3. Passing 2 postgraduate subjects with previous request.

Community Help:It is pretty much what the community can provide the chemical engineering career, beginning with the aforementioned environmental engineering, the responsibility to create cleaner technologies and processes with minimal waste and the provision of such programs like the purifying of water and development of cleaning processes aiming at the polluted rivers of Bogotá and surrounding areas. Not just for the environmental aspect can help the community, there may be many more processes using knowledge of raw materials, especially plants, though this involves a discussion of how that knowledge is used and whether it can be positive for the progress of the communities.

Post graduate programs:The department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia Bogotá has 3 programs of postgraduate studies: 1. Magister of Chemical Engineering.2. Magister of Environmetal Engineering. 3. Doctorate of Chemical Engineering.

Sources of Employment:A chemical engineer is able to work in different fields, especially those having to do with working on the ground, in fields such as research and development, process design, modeling, simulation and control of the plant. Although this is the most obvious source of employment, there are as many as you want to imagine, some examples are in the administration, including the ability to create businesses, advisory work with companies in addition to sales, working in government organizations, in law areas such as patents and even teaching work.

Personal goals:My goal at the end of my studies is to go to work in the area of materials development, particularly in the development of plastics and polymers. I think that to undertake it, I must first know the field and for me the best way is to work a time there. I have a dream to someday teach and become a researcher at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, addition to that to do postgraduate studies, my dream is to study in Germany.

Conclussions:There are large the responsibilities who have a chemical engineer with society and for the Colombia progress, this is due to all branches in which an engineer can have, this also implies an ethical practice, so there is an ethical code which should govern all engineers in our country. The chemical engineering program UNAL-Bogota is considered the best program in the country as for its pensum as for the resources with which it accounts, this is reflected in the graduate engineers.

Civil Engineering has always been present in society. This is the mother of the engineering because before making a car, civil engineering made a road; before using electric energy an engineer made a house. Civil engineering has

always ensured the welfare of society building and managing the interests of the people

Profile of the Student The profile to be an engineer is: ·First, the person must have passion for the engineering. ·This person must like the numbers and be very skilled with mathematical equations.·She will always have present the responsibility and commitment

25

Page 28: professional orientation

Profile of the Professional The professional profile of an engineer is:·She must be punctual and responsible for delivering any project, otherwise s/he could be dismissed.·She must be a perfectionist and have accuracy because a small mistake could change the shape of the structure, bridge, highway, and damage the work of months or years.

A civil engineer can work with multiple items and in different branches. This are:Structural engineering: is responsible for estimating the maximum resistance of elements subjected to varying loads, dead loads and casual loadings (earthquakes, winds, snow, etc..), seeking a state of minimum service at the lowest possible cost.Geotechnical engineering: is responsible for the resistance between the particles of different nature, particle size, moisture, cohesiveness, and the properties of soils in general, in order to ensure interaction with the soil structure. It also designs the foundation or support for buildings, bridges, etc.

Hydraulic engineering: is concerned with the design and execution of works related to water, whether for use, as in the production of hydropower, irrigation, drinking water, sewerage, or other, is to build structures in oceans, rivers , lakes, or similar environments, including, for example, dikes, dams, canals, harbors, piers, breakwaters, among other buildings.Transport and Roads engineering: is the set of knowledge, skills, professional practices, principles and values necessary to meet the social needs of mobility of people and goods.

26

Page 29: professional orientation

Personal goalsMy personal goal is to be a great engineer working with hydraulic and water which is what I like.I dream traveling around the world and to knowing some cities like Venice or Amsterdam.

ConclusionI conclude that really I love my mayor because it has been the best engineering and thanks to it life is very easy for everybody. Also I conclude that in civil engineering teamwork is very important and you need to know how to be a leader and make decisions which may not be easy in complicated times, but, due to these reasons I identify myself as a civil engineer.

27

Page 30: professional orientation

Since long time ago, Civil Engineering has been known as an activity that attempts to propose solutions to housing problems, domestic services, sanitation, transportation and others, and gradually acquired its

name from the close link with the people and the impact of this discipline in their activities.Civil Engineering includes five specific lines in which an engineer can specialize, but, it is necessary to say

that they are all related to each other. In addition to being an activity that impact son humans and the environment, civil engineering also interacts with other disciplines that provide support to achieve their

purposes.

Here are presented the main characteristics of the profession and the profile of contemporary Civil Engineer.A contemporary Civil Engineer should have as his/her main feature, the ability to solve problems on infrastructure with wit and precision. For this, you need to use science as physics, mathematics, chemistry and others, thus, requiring that a good professional in this discipline will be at ease handling and applying these sciences.

What is Civil Engineering?Civil Engineering is a creative profession and is probably one of the oldest professions. The Egyptians, Romans and the Mayans developed engineering activities. The definition of the profession has changed over time, but now can be defined as an occupation that uses the scientific method to transform, in economical and optimal, natural resources into useful forms for the use of man.It is important to study civil engineering because through this activity can develop many projects that benefit the community and create better living conditions.Additionally, this profession offers the possibility to choose the way of working to have different fields of action and professional profiles.

and organizing the transport, so that roads are properly sized for normal operation and users in their use of roads as directed and orientation given through signage and other parameters of operation.· Construction: In this branch are considered the four previous branches, but priority is given to the study of efficient processes of construction, also in the use of equipment and machinery for construction, trade materials, resource management and managing a project.

The five fields of Civil Engineering are:

· Hydraulics: It is the sector that provides the tools for water resource management. From here there are projects such as aqueducts, sewers, irrigation canals for agriculture agriculture, and others.· The structural design. The branch responsible for dimensioning the structures and buildings to withstand the loads applied on them, and working.· Geotechnics: This branch is the study and understanding of soil, in order to accomplish the soil a favorable condition to build on it and to make projects with stability.· Transportation and transit. This is the branch responsible for planning

Geology (from the Greek γῆ, gê, "earth" and λόγος, logos, "study") is the science that studies the composition

and internal structure of the earth. And the processes by which our planet has evolved dare geologic time. The scientists who develop geology are called geologists. Geology gives insight into the history of the Earth, as it provides

the primary evidence for tectonic plates. In modern times, geology is commercially important for mineral and hydrocarbon exploration and for evaluating water resources. The work of the geologist is primarily a task of research

and description in which the scientific begin from the data captured in a map and the analysis carried out on the rocks, minerals and fossils collected in the research zone to propose models. How do they do that? First geologist has

to go to the field to collect the different types of rocks and fossils, describe the structures and record their work in written form leaning with photographs drawings and maps. The processes that gave origin and modeled our world to

date. Together with the appearance and evolution of various life forms that have inhabited the earth are related to phenomena such as mass extinctions, the plate tectonic and climatic changes such as glaciations, these topics are the subject of geological study. Within the field work of a geologist s/he can collect samples for analysis such as chemical composition of the rocks or the analysis of ages of the deposits. In camp also describes the environment of formation

of lithologies and tectonic and structural models that integrate a zone. This work eventually obtained a geological map that clearly summarizes this information.

If you want to become in a geologist you got to have this skills:· Reasoning ability; aptitude for analysing and solving problems using logical and critical approaches.· Mathematical ability and potential· Independence and creativity of thought, lateral thinking and hypothesis generation· Capacity to absorb and use new ideas; ability to apply familiar ideas to unfamiliar situations· Spirit of enquiry: keenness to understand the reasons for observations; depth; tendency to look for meaning; enthusiasm and curiosity in science

The graduate of the School of Geology from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, must be a professional capable of coping general geology, and perform well in areas of exploration and exploitation of minerals and energy resources in geology applied to Engineering (Civil, Mining, Agricultural, etc..), regional planning and environmental management. The geologist ability to work in to the field, and must also be able to participate in multidisciplinary team work and develop entrepreneurship.

Geological studies are of fundamental importance in understanding natural disasters as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and mass removals. Although in most cases can not be avoided these events the geology is a tool to prevent risk populations and is useful in the preparation of plans of prevention.

What about the job when you finish your major? Actually in Colombia is not common to study geology so there are a lot of jobs and a few geologists. And nowadays is the best pay profession in Colombia but it is a really hard work because you will be in the field every day for around three months although if you like geology you are going to get fun.

If you want to get a postgraduate you got a lot of options to choose one like:· Mineralogy: is the study of chemistry, crystal structure, and physical (including optical) properties of minerals.· Stratigraphy: studies rock layers and layering (stratification).· Geophysics: is the study of the Earth using quantitative physical methods.· Volcanology: is the study of volcanoes, lava, magma, and related geological, geophysical and geochemical phenomena.

Mechanical Engineering is one of the older major in the history for the humanity. It began before Jesus Christ with some advances of Arquimedes and his studies of hydrostatics and statics. Heron of Alexandria was the first man to build the steam machine; but now we know that the mechanical engineering led the industrial revolution in the middle of the XVIII century. The idea of the mechanical engineers is to use the principles of

the physics, mathematics, materials and energy to produce some final products as electricity, movement, resistance. We do not have to forget that one of the first works in mechanical engineering was how to

transmit or support the forces, that is the reason why to study the resistance of the materials.

People who want to begin to study the mechanical engineering have to be ready to study all about the exact sciences: physics, mathematics, chemistry. Then, you will begin to study the design analyzing the forces in a system, the measures of the objects, the resistance of materials, the manufacturing processes, the transformation of the energy analyzing the thermodynamics processes, the machinery which it is important all events related with the heat, pressure and temperature. Also, people who want to study this major have to be ready to learn the programming of computers.

37

Page 40: professional orientation

Professionals have to be qualified to analyze any process for the machinery and solve problems related with this process. They have to be ready to answer for problems of the environmental kind in a very quick manner. They need to design machinery thinking of how to make the pieces, the measures and the international norms is one of the most important requires for a mechanical engineering. Also, mechanical engineers have to be knowledgeable and use some design software as Solid Edge, Inventor, ANSYS, and another ones to predict the behavior of designs under forces, and environmental effects. Next, they have to modify the pieces based on the results obtained before and finally, manufacturing processes.

In Universidad Nacional de Colombia there are four lines of study for the mechanical engineering major. The first one is the design line in which you study statics, dynamics, mechanisms, resistance of materials, drawing of machines, design of machinery elements I and II.The second one is materials line in which you study the basic mechanic, the science of materials, materials of engineering, manufacturing processes I and II and engineering of manufacturing. The third one is energy line in which you

processes in which you can modify these aspects and make more comfortable the site where people will stay for long time. You can work with turbines, compressors, gas, and water, among other things to produce electric energy for the community and make more comfortable their lives.·

study the basic thermodynamics, the mechanic of fluids and heat transferring, and then you have to choose two subjects about energy as turbo machinery, thermal factories or internal combustion in motors. The last one is the line related with the electrical energy so you study electric machines, basic electronics, systems and signals I and II and, finally, control. As mechanical engineers you will be able to solve problems, for example the temperature and humidity are important for the comfort of the people, so you can design and optimize

38

Page 41: professional orientation

There are three lines of post graduate, as you know those are specialization, magister or doctorate, for the specialization you find industrial automation, energy quality and control; for the magister one you find industrial automation, mechanical engineering magister and materials and processes; for the last one, doctorate you find sciences and engineering of materials and mechanical and mechatronics engineering doctorate.

As mechanical engineer you can work in any company because you will be capable to work in maintenance of machinery, design of new products, manufacturing, between other ones; you can work as professor of course with a post graduate magister or even in the commercial department of an enterprise.

Of course each person has some goals in their lives, so the first one is finish the major, become a mechanical engineer is not an easy way, however, it is not impossible. Secondly, professionalism is the letter of presentation so you have to be better than the other ones. Goals are important because this is one of reasons to live, so study more and investigate the areas where people can apply engineering to obtain more success are very important goals, in fact, with our personal goals we can help or serve the community. Begin as a student and finish as an important person is the purpose of lots of people and this is the way for which we have to study.

You have to study mechanical engineering because this major will open your mind, you will understand the world from the point of view of science, you will learn to apply these concepts and make new things that will help or do more comfortable to community.Becoming a mechanical engineer will make you a person who can adapt to many situations in which you can apply and make solutions for problems. You will know how are the products made and how to optimize those processes, learn about materials, thermodynamics, design, will give you the tools to create new tendencies in the industrial world; do not forget that our world moves with just engineering.

Mechatronics Engineering is a relatively new and it appeared as a response to technological advances. When came the transistor, and with he the electronics, it was not long before they knew that could be controlled mechanical elements

with the electronic. This electromechanical elements began to appear especially in industry, but to develop the technology, the engineers of that time began to have complications due to mechanical engineers were completely

unaware of electronics, so they had the need to study these topics themselves or ask for help from electronics engineers, however, the way the electronics were completely unaware of the mechanics, so we also had to study

themselves too. Finally the need to combine this two disciplines was enough, and for this reason, and combined with other elements, was born the mechatronics engineering some time not more than 50 years.

This program has no specific requirements; almost anyone who does not have problems with studying mathematics may qualify for this field of studies. Some of the requirements demanded by this major include creativity, have highly developed logical skills, and abilities to visualize objects and behaviors; and not to be afraid of electricity, and liking this major. The most important requirement is creativity because in this discipline, it is necessary to face many complex problems, and each of the above skills, or other learned skills previously are useless if the student is not creative.

40

Page 43: professional orientation

A professional of this program should be able to take on big engineering design challenges. Mechatronics engineers stand out as comprehensive and highly effective in general problems solving. Mechatronics engineers are also in the field of research, development, and innovation; they are involved in a lot of new technology developments.

Mechatronics engineering is considered by many people the evolution of mechanical engineering, therefore, one of the most important disciplines, in this career, is mechanics. In addition, this engineering studies a part of computer programming, and has a large component of electronics. However, the discipline that sets the mechatronics from mechanical or electronic is the control processes; and this is the most important line of study in this career. In the curriculum of this engineering, the control is a group of subjects that are not available until half of the major is seen because the student must acquire a set of

Currently the numbers of postgraduate options are very limited, because this engineering is quite new. Among the possibilities available, is Domotic, which is the development of domestic technology; it is also the option of industrial automation, which automatically handles mass production processes for large companies. Another option is the advanced control techniques, which also is focused on the industry, but automatically handles a very delicate process, and very accurately. A final alternative is robotics, but this does not formally exist, but there are many studies available on the subject.

tools before you can create a controller of any kind. The control consists on being able to administer any activity, and giving the possibility to make a system behave in a definite way.The beauty of engineering in general is that by definition the possibilities are endless, because the basis of engineering is the imagination; the solution of a problem can result in the craziest solutions. Particularly mechatronics engineering is responsible for the automatization of any process or activity, these activities can be private, domestic or industrial.

41

Page 44: professional orientation

In this country chances are slim, but not all good. A big problem is how young this career is, so the industry is not very familiar with the capabilities of these engineers, but it is remarkable the appearance of many companies specializing in technology and the interest of large foreign companies in these professionals. This creates great opportunities for recent graduates.

My personal goal is to know all the important people as possible before I graduate and get to work for Siemens which is one of the largest German companies in technology. I hope to travel a lot working for this company and get a lot of experience, and then to be able to create my own company. Having a large technology company in Colombia is my biggest dream.

In conclusion, this young branch of engineering is an excellent choice for everyone looking for a dynamic, active, and quite innovative career. The requirements are not exclusive and completed the studies the person can have a good compensation. It is perfect for all technology lovers who are interested in building their own technology. It is also a career that offers good opportunities in a market that is growing stronger, and gives the opportunity to travel a lot.

I going to tell you about my major, which is Occupational Therapy, but I am not going to define it like a dictionary or encyclopedia; I prefer talk to

you about my own experience, from my point of view. When I decided to study in the university I did not know which major to choose, first I studied Language Therapy but my parents were not happy

with this decision because they wanted me to I study Medicine then I did a request to be move from Language Therapy to the School of Medicine and I was accepted but I did not like to study medicine for different reason so I

decided to abandon Medicine.Sometime later I was expected and encouraged by my parents to study

again. Then I wanted to find a major that I could like me and finally Occupational Therapy came to me and it fulfilled my expectations and I

shall tell you why:Occupational Therapy is major from the Health Sciences but it is also from the Human Sciences because it is about the human being understood from

the individual into a society, from the person to a family; occupational therapy goes beyond a biomedical model to look at the people and treat

themHealth is different from the absence of sicknesses; health implies a quality of life meaning people feeling good beyond whether they suffer a sickness

or not.The individual independency is a value of the human being, it exists in this world by himself and when he loses his independency by sickness he loses part of his identity and our work is to return a high level of independency to our patients, to return them their meaning of life, their quality of live,

and their well-being.To conclude I want to invite people who care about the well-being of

human beings, their health and quality of life to approach this beautiful profession not only as clients of services or profession that cares people´s health, but, you approach it as a philosophy of life for the world to live

better and enjoy life, to live without a good quality of life is to exist without satisfaction, without sense or meaning, occupational therapy helps people

to have meaning of life, therefore, give meaning to their existence.

Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary field of engineering focusing on how complex engineering projects should be designed and managed over their life

cycles. Issues such as logistics, the coordination of different teams, and automatic control of machinery become more difficult when dealing with large, complex projects. Systems engineering deals with work-processes and tools to manage risks on such projects, and it overlaps with both technical and human-centered disciplines such as control engineering, industrial engineering, organizational

studies, and project management. The term systems engineering can be traced back to Bell Telephone Laboratories in the 1940s. The need to identify and manipulate the properties of a system as a whole, which in complex engineering projects may greatly differ from the sum of

the parts' properties, motivated the Department of Defense, NASA, and other industries to apply the discipline.

The requirements for a student are: knowledge of mathematics and operative systems (OS), be interested in the two last topics and the student needs the

dedication to learn and study, because all of the engineering careers have to teach mathematics in depth; and, on the other hand, technology advances every

day, so the student had to learn each day of his formation. Now the requirements and profile of a systems engineer are many than the

people think that they know; they have to know how turn data into information, must have quite knowledge in the mathematics field, besides they make

programming in different languages of programs and arrange, make and manage projects about the costumer requires.

Another important topic is, why all of this is important for the community? Or in other words, what a systems engineer can offer to his community? First of all, a

systems engineer can organize a lot of data which makes easy any research, second, with all of that data turned into information, they can optimize, maximize and support their products to save time and energy, and they can create software

and algorithms to solve problems, this are a few examples of what a systems engineer can do for his/her community.

A systems engineer can specialize in a lot of knowledge fields, for example, we have the mobile communication industry which can control the cellular phone

operations, or can learn deeply about programming languages for all enterprise requirements, we can learn about management of projects and

50

Page 53: professional orientation

applications too, all of that are examples of post graduate programs. There are many options when we talk about sources of employment, a

systems engineer can manage the technological area in any enterprise, besides, and he can make or sell his product to his

company or other enterprises. He can also make his own company to create and sell informatics products beginning with simple software until robots and biomedical applications such cybernetic prosthesis

programation and development, and efficient healing program to. We can also find a place to system engineers in scientifical and industrial

research, with a special focus on more efficient and cheaper production systems, and serious investigation projects.

My personal goals can divide according to time, short-term, mid-term and long-term. In short-term I want to pass my assignatures with quite well grades and thereupon get a great average score and learn a lot of things about technology. In mid-term I have to finish my university studies and find a job or study a post graduate program. Finally, in long-term goals, I want to travel around the world learning about all

the technology in each country of the planet. To conclude, systems engineering is a good career option for the one

who likes mathematics and technology, it is a good option if the student wants to know a lot about informatics software and ultimate tools which can make works so simple for human beings, and is the best option if the person wants to lead on informatics innovation.

? In recent years technology has had a rapid growth and companies every time manage greater volumes of information that must be processed to extract what is really important and use this in the best way. Because of this there is a strong demand for systems engineers as companies have seen the potential of information and they are interested in efficient information systems, to let them know what the customer wants as quickly as possible and even predict what they will want. But systems engineering is not just for marketing, it can also

support and facilitate to people their dairy tasks like writing a letter, performing complex calculations, among others actions, and of course, it can also serve as distraction such as video games.

The idea of systems engineering is to diagnose, design, build, evaluate and maintain systems and process of information with the support of information technologies, helping the organizations and companies to obtain

more possible benefit of your equipment, personnel and processes. In Colombia the plans of studies of systems engineering are focused on software engineering and information systems.

Student ProfileTo study engineering systems is proved to be necessary the following: To have strong knowledge in mathematics and physics, intermediate knowledge in economics and administration and creativity, which is what all engineers should know. In addition to this s/he should be good at proposing several solutions to a problem. S/he must have a good ability to work in groups, must be good at communicating his/her ideas, and of course must have special taste for programming.

52

Page 55: professional orientation

Professional ProfileA systems engineer has a solid formation in natural sciences and social sciences, basic and applied with knowledge in technology that allow you to analyze, understand, model and optimize the process of decision making in an organization. In addition he is in capacity to model organizational structures and processes, design and manage information technology resources, build and implement information technology applications and design solutions to complex problems.

Core LinesThe main lines deepening in systems engineering are as follows:· Security: In this line you learn to perform attack to find bugs in security systems and correct them. · Data bases: is another important line dedicated to data storage and study. For large companies that have many transactions every day is a critical issue.· Design software: this line is the favorite of many. This line is dedicated, as its name implies, to design and program software that can be to solve a problem in a specific company or could also be a program for sale in general.

Systems engineering is dedicated to supporting all other fields. With the programs that we believe will streamline and simplify mathematical calculations on daily tasks. For this reason, we usually work with people of other fields, so you meet many people. Another positive side is that not necessarily to have to work in an office, because once you have obtained the data you need, you can go home to design or program in the comfort of your own home.

53

Page 56: professional orientation

Source of EmploymentAs for work, there are currently many companies interested in having systematized or customers information systems that enable them to make better use of customer information and predict future trends.

Personal goalsOn a personal level, I want to finish this, and specialize in software design and administration of databases that are my favorite subjects. And I would like to create my own video game company.

Systems engineering is a great choice where you will meet many people and help us to many more. Is one of the most interesting races and if you do not mind working on a computer, I would have to say it is your career.
