Speaker Biography and Topic of Keynote Speech: Mark Abbott, P.Eng., MBA, CMA, PMP Engineering Change Lab Animator, Engineers Without Borders Mark is a Professional Engineer (Mechanical Engineering) originally from Burlington, Ontario. After years in the consulting world he joined the Vancouver Professional Chapter where he helped to launch Fair Trade Vancouver, and travelled to Ghana as a Professional Fellow. Shortly after, Mark joined the National Office as part of the Executive Team, leading a Talent Team that attracts, engages, and enables system change leaders in full time roles within the organization. The Engineering Change Lab: The Engineering Change Lab (Eng Lab) is a multi-year, multi-stakeholder forum to unlock the full potential of the engineering profession by addressing complex challenges that no individual stakeholder can solve alone. The initiative is co-owned by organizations from across the engineering profession in Canada (companies, government, universities, regulators, associations, and non-profits). Senior leaders from each of these organizations work together over time to advance initiatives (or experiments) to help shape the future of the engineering profession. These initiatives target the biggest challenges facing the profession in Canada: poor record of innovation, lack of diversity, failures in ethics and professionalism, exclusion of non-licensed engineers from the profession, inflexibility of the education model, etc... The Lab was initiated by Engineers Canada and Engineers Without Borders with the ongoing support of Reos Partners, who are the global leaders in the Change Lab process. As part of the secretariat, Mark Abbott supports the backbone strategy and execution of the Lab, and supports EWB’s connection to the Lab and overall work in the Engineering Leadership space.

3 2015 Chair’s Report

On behalf of the Ottawa Chapter Executive, I am pleased to present this summary of the chapter’s accomplishments and activities for 2015. Based on the number of members, the Ottawa Chapter is the largest in the province, and our public and private sector members take pride in the commitment and dedication of professional engineers who serve and protect the public.

Each year the Ottawa Chapter implements a program to deliver on the core directives of PEO: to facilitate communication between PEO Council and its members; to provide a forum for discussion of local engineering matters, professional development and social outreach; and to promote public awareness of the engineering profession.

The 2015 Chapter Business Plan focused on three key operational priorities:

1. Representing the interests of the Ottawa Chapter through PEO forums such as the AGM, Regional Congresses and Chapter Leaders Conference, and collaborating with other PEO Chapters.

2. Furthering progress toward advancing the professional status and welfare of all members, and promoting public awareness of the engineering profession. This year, the Ottawa Chapter launched a new Entrepreneurship program (see Nov/Dec 2015 of Engineering Dimensions on pages 12 and 13) under the leadership of Dr. Tapan Das, P.Eng., and encourages all engineers to innovate and consider ways to support others to become successful entrepreneurs.

3. Partnering with other professional associations, such as the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE), to diversify networking opportunities and offer a broad variety of events, such as the second Engineering Employment Event (E3) and a Federal All-Engineers Election Debate; strengthening our alliances with other associations, such as The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This year, we engaged with engineering students from both Ottawa U and Carleton U, and were pleased to have Ottawa U host the New Member Certificate Ceremony in December.

Chapter activities are made possible through the dedicated efforts of a remarkable team of volunteers. I would like to express my gratitude to these enthusiastic volunteers, and to the hard-working members of the Executive Committee. I thank you all for your support and commitment to the profession and to your chapter.

5. Events and Programs Committee Report The Events Committee plans and implements events for the benefit of members and to raise awareness of engineering in the general public. Events are categorized as technical seminars, facility tours, or social/networking. The following list represents the major activities for 2015: Clarifying the Path to P.Eng. February 4th, 2015 The Ottawa Chapter hosted a sold-out seminar presented by Tracey Caruana, P.Eng., EIT Program Coordinator, from PEO headquarters. The seminar included a presentation on the process and steps to transition through internship to fully licensed professional engineer, as well as an interactive Q&A session. As a precursor to our Licensure Assistance Program (LAP) for 2015, the Ottawa Chapter decided to host an event that would inform new hopefuls of the route to obtaining licensure as P.Eng. We were joined by Tracey Caruana from PEO HQ who took us through the Licensure Assistance Program (LAP) and attempted to answer a variety of questions. The response for the event surpassed our original estimates and clearly there is a need on a yearly basis to schedule an ongoing event. Our apologies go out to those people who could not subscribe in time, in the end we had nearly 100 people attend and had standing room only. PEO Ottawa Social and OSPE Town Hall February 9th, 2015 On February 9th, OSPE CEO Sandro Perruzza hosted a Town Hall meeting in the Novotel in Ottawa, where he presented OSPE's new strategic plan and wanted to hear our thoughts about OSPE's future and how OSPE can better serve engineers and the profession. The Town Hall was followed by a joint OSPE and PEO Ottawa Chapter social. Over forty attendees networked over refreshments. Enable Ottawa May 14th, 2015 Enable Ottawa 2015 came about through the gradual discussion with other organisations of how engineering should be front and centre in creating a more inclusive Canadian society for persons living with disability. Coincidentally, the event was very close to the 10 anniversary of the AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disability Act) which allowed us to contact Minister Duguid and the Rt. Honorable David Onley and receive personalised videos for the seminar.

56th Annual General Meeting pg. 10 February 24th, 2016

We teamed with the mainly ‘US and west coast’ based Tetra society, March of Dimes DesignAbility and the Carleton University Read initiative to support engineering graduates who were developing and creating future appliances for the ability impaired. The event saw 118 registrants and in the order of 90 actual participants on the day. The format before and after the three key presentations was a series of booths and demonstrations that allowed people to network, team-build and discuss opportunities. The purpose of this first seminar in Ottawa was to highlight the challenges presented to all of us when considering the improvements required for people with impaired abilities who were growing up, working and living in modern society and how can engineering, industrial design, and technology help and improve the lives of these people for a more equitable and fair society. Catch the Wave! June 28th, 2015 PEO Ottawa Chapter once again hosted its annual Family Fun Day at the Splash Wave Pool at 2040 Ogilvie Road on Sunday June 28th, 2015. Approximately 80 engineers and their families got wet enjoying the main wave pool, slide, kiddy-pools and hot-tubs. A pizza lunch was provided. Many thanks to all volunteers who helped out, and to the City of Ottawa staff for their courteous service. HOPE Volleyball Charity Tournament July 11th, 2015 PEO Ottawa Chapter entered at team in this year’s Hope Volley Ball charity tournament held on July 11th, at Mooney’s bay here in Ottawa. Enjoying a long day of Beach Volleyball, The “PEO Engineers” were one of over 1,000 teams registered to take part in the tournament. After losing their first two matches the PEO team won three in a row, ending with a 3-2 record. Congratulations to team members Andre Sirios, Ian Whittal, Paul Dobrovolny, Predrag Vucetic, Lance Jelinski, Steve Selig, Zac Reesor, Camilla Zhang, and Hubert Mamba. Diefenbunker Tour July 25th, 2015 PEO’s Ottawa and Algonquin Chapters as well as OIQ Gatineau sector co-hosted a one-hour guided tour of the Diefenbunker, a four-story, 300-room, 100,000-square foot underground bunker meant to house 535 Canadian government officials and military officers in the event of a nuclear war. Shrouded in mystery, the Diefenbunker, nicknamed after then Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, was designed and built in secrecy during the crest of the Cold War between 1959 and 1961. The Diefenbunker was given National Historic Site status in 1994, and CFS Carp was closed the same year. The building opened as a museum and national historic site in 1997. The tour was attended by over 100 engineers and their family and friends, and ended with a pizza lunch in the bunker's cafeteria.

6. Communications Committee Report

The communications committee currently uses a number of mediums to broadcast its events:

Publicizing of our events through wide spread email campaigns to Professional Engineers in the Ottawa region (e-blasts)

PEO Ottawa Chapter website itself through both our upcoming and past events pages

Promotion of our events with the use of the Eventbrite tool along with promo codes inserted for those helping out and special guests attending

Use of a Twitter account to further promote engineering events

A number of updates are constantly made to the Ottawa Chapter website to ensure it is as up-to-date as possible. Enhancements to it are also being considered such as a new events calendar to help summarize the events on a month to month basis.

The committee has strived to be efficient in its e-blasting services through careful selection of both the day of the week and time in order to attain the maximum response rate possible. Further, the committee has accentuated its efficiency in the way it conducts its events: for example, in the “Sustainability Seminar” event hosted on the 3rd of February, people were checked in via an Eventbrite mobile phone application providing both faster check-ins of guests along with instant statistics in terms of attendees. Further, an online survey was created to gather feedback from the guests so as to assist in the planning process for the next event.

Should you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding either of our chapter website or any of our processes in the advertising or conducting of our events, do not hesitate to reach out to our Communications Committee Chair.

9. Licensure Assistance Program Committee Report In a slightly different format this year, Ottawa PEO Chapter decided to wrap up the LAP2014 event on February 3rd with our annual guides appreciation night, where we celebrated the support of our volunteer guides along with our EITs and our good friend Tracey Caruana representing PEO HQ. Listening to our previous set of EITs and guides we took advantage of Tracey’s experience, and kicked off the LAP2015 with our “Clarifying the Path to P.Eng” on February 4th. The LAP started with a further event on June 2nd called “Understanding the experience requirements for licensure – Quality vs Quantity”; where Pauline Lebel, P.Eng., and Tracey Caruana, both from PEO HQ, kindly took us through recording experience for licensing, providing many hints and tips for our new interns and ending by providing a run through of the benefits of the Licensure Assistance Program. On June 3rd, we commenced the matching of guides with interns with our now familiar round table format of introductions and training. This year, we had 11 guides and interns matched and there was a very favourable balance of disciplines. We would encourage our members to take part in this valuable and important experience. Should our experienced engineers wish to sign up, please find this link on the PEO HQ website: http://www.peo.on.ca/index.php/ci_id/25664/la_id/1.htm. Many thanks to all our volunteers assisting in 2015 and we hope to see you all again for the 2016 program. 10. Nomination Committee Report In accordance with Section 7 of the Chapter By-laws, the Nomination Committee prepared a slate of Officers and Executive Members for the 2016 term of office. This slate was circulated to Chapter members via email on December 22nd, and published in the Ottawa Chapter Newsletter. 2016 Officers & Director Slate of Candidates: Officers: Chair: Sharon Barr, P.Eng. Since no further nominations were received (as this report went to print), as per the process codified in the Bylaws, the slate was acclaimed. The Nominating Committee is confident that this group of volunteer Engineers will maintain the Ottawa Chapter as one of the most dynamic, ambitious and the largest Chapter in the Province. If any member is interested in participating in one of the Chapter committees, or volunteering at any Chapter events, please contact the Chapter Chair.

11. Entrepreneurship Committee Report Ottawa PEO Chapter has pioneered an entrepreneurship program for encouraging and helping engineers in the Ottawa region to innovate and create new businesses for economic benefit of Ontario and Canada. Entrepreneurship is key to Canada’s competitiveness. Exploratory work was done to find resources in Ottawa to provide support to the entrepreneurs to launch a business with their innovative ideas. The resources are follows.

Start-up garage and maker space of University of Ottawa.

Lead to Win program helping entrepreneurs to create a $1M revenue business in three years.

Invest Ottawa to provide business, marketing and legal advice.

“Futurpreneur” to provide financing and business support. Dunn Engineering to provide prototype building support.

After exploring the resources in and around Ottawa, the program was presented to Ottawa PEO Chapter board. The board gave the entrepreneurship team go ahead to launch a pilot program. An email blast was sent to all Ottawa PEO Chapter members inviting them to attend the entrepreneurship pilot launch meeting on June 29th, 2015 limiting the number of attendees to sixty. Seven entrepreneurs were enrolled in the program and one entrepreneur was enrolled as mentor. Getting encouraging results from our initial pilot program launch, we had another meeting on September 30th inviting 150 engineers, resources, volunteers, PEO President, PEO Registrar, OSPE CEO, OSPE vice Chair and Ottawa councillor Marianne Wilkinson. We enrolled 11 more entrepreneurs and 1 more mentor. An article about our program has been published in Nov/Dec 2015 issue of PEO magazine Engineering Dimensions in page 12 and 13, and a mention of our program in President’s message in page 3. Currently eighteen entrepreneurs have been enrolled in the program. One has been accepted in ‘Lead to Win’ program of Carleton U and another is in the enrolment process. One has created a model of his multistage radial compressor using the 3D printer of Carleton U assisted by a graduate student. Two are receiving business development and accounting and legal help from Invest Ottawa. Two are receiving business advice from the team and mentors. One is receiving help to obtain PEO certificate of authorisation. Nine are attending various entrepreneurship and business lecture series of Ottawa U, Carleton U and Invest Ottawa.

Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Ottawa Chapter

56th Annual General Meeting pg. 24 February 24th, 2016

For 2016, we are planning to launch the program in a much bigger way next year. Since the entrepreneurship program fits well with the advocacy mandate of Ontario Society of Professional Engineer (OSPE), the Ottawa Chapter will be officially working with OSPE in 2016. The OSPE board has approved this as an OSPE activity and OSPE will initially work with Ottawa Chapter before broadening out to all the other chapters in Ontario.

12. Liaison Committee Report The Liaison Committee takes an active role in building relationships with other groups and organizations whose activities share a common interest with PEO members. Efforts of the Liaison Committee concentrated on the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE), the Algonquin Chapter of PEO and the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ), Outaouais Chapter. With efforts from PEO Ottawa Chapter, OSPE successfully held its second “E3 - Engineering Employment Event” in Ottawa, as well as its inaugural workshop on Preparing Your PEO Experience Record. More events are being organized in partnership with OSPE for 2016, including a preparatory course for the Professional Practice Exam (PPE Prep.) and Celebrate National Engineering Month with the Ottawa Senators! A Tour of the Chalk River Laboratories was made possible through a partnership with the Algonquin Chapter of PEO. The two groups are now exchanging event information in an effort to build stronger relationships among the members of the two chapters. The Algonquin Chapter of PEO and the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, Outaouais Chapter partnered with the PEO Ottawa Chapter for the Group Tour of the Diefenbunker. The Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, Outaouais Chapter and PEO Ottawa Chapter are also exchanging event information in an effort to build stronger relationships among the members of the chapters. We look forward to joint events in 2016, possibly even a curling competition. In 2016, we look forward to building on our current relationships and creating a few new ones, in a sustainable fashion.

13. Awards Committee Report The Ottawa Chapter is comprised of engineers in a wide variety of disciplines working in the public and private sector, in a diversity of enterprises. In this environment, engineers produce significant achievements, and as a professional community it is important to take the time to recognize and celebrate these accomplishments. At last years's AGM, the Awards Committee recognized two individuals who made significant contributions to the profession:

Guy Felio, P.Eng., recipient of the Ottawa Chapter Distinguished Service Award;

Ray Barton, recipient of the Ottawa Chapter Outstanding Volunteer Service Award

For 2015, the Ottawa Chapter launched a new awards program modelled after the Ontario Professional Engineers Awards (OPEA) at the provincial level. The Ottawa Chapter award program is a pilot recognition program for professional engineers from the region who have improved our quality of life through the ingenious application of their engineering skills. Recipients' achievements are significantly above the normally high standards of the profession. The presentation of this award is also aimed at furthering public understanding of the professional engineer's role in society. The PEO Ottawa Chapter sent out a call for nominations in January, seeking member submissions for professional engineers in the Ottawa Chapter who have made outstanding contributions to their profession and their community, in the following categories:

Engineering Excellence Award: Recognizing overall excellence in the practice of engineering, where the innovative application of engineering knowledge and principles has solved a unique problem, led to advanced products, or produced above-average results.

Management Award: Recognizing those managing and directing engineering projects or enterprises, where innovative management practice has contributed significantly to the overall excellence of the engineering achievement.

Entrepreneurship Award: Recognizing those applying new technologies or innovative approaches that have enabled new companies to get started, and/or assisted established companies to grow in new directions. The engineer should have demonstrated the initiative, energy and spirit it takes to seek out new ideas and to take a leading role in fostering and promoting them.

Young Engineer Award: Recognizing outstanding young Ottawa Chapter engineers, who have made exceptional achievements in their chosen fields. To be eligible for nomination in the Young Engineer Award category, a candidate must be no older than 35 years of age as of December 31st in the year the

nomination is submitted; and have demonstrated excellence, not only in career, but also in community and professional participation.

Citizenship Award: Recognizing a professional engineer's contributions to volunteer activities and public service. Those who earn this award have given freely of their time, professional experience and engineering expertise - to the benefit of humanity.

A number of excellent nominations were received, and the Awards Committee has recommended a total of four individuals for awards to be presented at the 56th Annual General Meeting. Thanks to all members who submitted nominations highlighting the outstanding work of their colleagues. 14. Government Liaison Program Chapter Committee Report The Government Liaison Program positions PEO on the same side of the table with government to solve public interest issues related to engineering. At the chapter level, engagement with local politicians evolved around the following activities:

A delegation of the PEO Ottawa Chapter GLP attended the 25th Annual OCPLA Summer BBQ with Minister & Ottawa-Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi, Thursday August 20th (Westboro Beach - Yacht Club Cafe; 745 Ottawa River Parkway).
