NEWSLETTER

Our chapter has largely shifted from paper newsletters to electronic e-mail event notifications. About 80% of our members are signed up for electronic access. The formal newsletters still supply information to Chapter members regarding Chapter activities, PEO news, and provide general information for the use of our members, as well as fulfilling mandatory requirements such as publishing AGM notices. Our formal newsletters go out to all Chapter members, incurring significant printing and mailing costs for those members who have not signed up for electronic delivery. These newsletters still provide some information on upcoming events, but since they are usually only published twice per year, we also send out periodic e-mail event notifications, to those members who have signed up for electronic delivery with PEO headquarters. In 2010, the chapter published only one formal newsletter, as a cost saving measure, and an additional five event notification e-mails, permitting significantly more timely notification of events to our membership. We encourage all our members to subscribe to the e-mail list via the PEO main page (www.peo.on.ca, Member's area). Not only does this save you money, but you also get valuable information on interesting events happening in our area. WEBSITE

Our website continues to attract praise from PEO headquarters, both for design, and currency of content. Hundreds of content updates were made in 2010. Counters show the main page was visited over 100K times. Our website will likely be undergoing changes as we search for a new webmaster with the skillset necessary to maintain our site. We encourage you to visit our website, at www.ottawa.peo.on.ca

7. Education and Outreach Committee Report

The Education and Outreach Committee was active in 2010, packed with celebrations of the many achievements of engineering students, as well as the younger ones aspiring to be Engineers. National Engineering Week (NEW) 2010 Each year, The National Research Council Canada (NRC) Science Outreach Committee organizes an event whereby Ottawa engineers go into classrooms to help students participate in the "Engineering Challenge".

In celebration of National Engineering Month/Week 2010, engineers from across the Ottawa region collaborated with teachers in Grades 5 to 7 to engage 2000 students in a problem solving activity in which student “engineering teams” were challenged to design and construct, from recycles materials, a Rubber band Powered Zamboni (RPZ ) prototype. Each participating class was organized in teams of 3 to 5 students, and engineer volunteers assisted the teachers and students with the Challenge. In-school competitions were held prior to the final event that took place at the Canada Science and Technology Museum on February 25, 2010. Volunteer engineers from the community helped organize and judge the final event.

Participation Statistics: Students: 2000 Classes: 84 Schools: 40 Volunteer Engineers: 45

The All Saints Cathilic High School team called “ELIMINATOR” won the NRC Engineering Challenge of racing their Zamboni powered by rubber bands.

PEO Ottawa Chapter helped out by: - internal promotion of event to PEO members to recruit engineer volunteers; - sponsored catering for orientation session (teachers/engineers) and for judges at final event; and - provided prizes (Science-related gift certificates) to top three winning schools. Student Paper Night – April 7, 2010 The Annual Student Papers Night was held on Wednesday April 7, at Sala San Marco on Preston Street. Approximately 100 persons attended this friendly 4th-year competition between our two university rivals Carleton U and Ottawa U. The winning categories were as follows:

2010 PEO Scholarship winners

This is the first year, the PEO Ottawa Chapter setup the PEO Scholarship Award program. The Chapter received funding from PEO for two scholarships of $500.00 each for graduating students attending engineering programs in Ontario. The Scholarship Selection Committee consisted of John Hazel, Ghassan Marjaba, and Sucha Mann.

Despite the short notice given to our local schools, we received excellent submissions for our scholarships awards program this year. We had six very highly deserving candidates selected and selection committee had a hard time eliminating any candidates. At the end, we decided to provide two PEO Scholarships, and four “Award of Merits” with cash awards from the Chapter. All of the six recipients were recognized at their school’s graduating ceremony by a Professional Engineer from the Ottawa Chapter.

1. The PEO Scholarships were awarded to the following two students: o Hugh Gillen of HillCrest High School – going to Queen’s University for General

8. Membership Committee Report

In 2010, the Membership Committee held three certificate presentation ceremonies for newly licensed engineers. The certificate presentation ceremony is a first opportunity for newly licensed engineers to meet their peers and the Chapter Executive. It provides the Chapter an opportunity to foster interest and future participation among new members.

At the presentation ceremony, new members are awarded their license in front of a group of peers and their invited guests. For some events, guest speakers from various backgrounds are invited to provide informative and entertaining talks.

The first certificate presentation ceremony in 2010 was combined with the 50th annual AGM held on February 17th, the second was held on May 13th, and the third on November 9th.. Between the three ceremonies, 63 new members were presented with their certificates.

10. Government Liaison Program Chapter Committee Re port

2010 was a very successful year for the Ottawa chapter GLP committee. The membership in this sub-committee has grown to be over 55 members, which shows the interest and enthusiasm that the chapter has for this type of work. For those that do not know, the main objective of the Government Liaison Program (GLP) is to ensure that government, PEO members and the public continue to recognize PEO’s regulatory mandate, in particular its contributions to maintaining the highest level of professionalism among engineers working in the public interest. The Ottawa Chapter GLP Committee has developed good relationships with the Ottawa area MPPs throughout 2010 and fulfilled PEO Council’s mandate to reach out to Municipal & Federal politicians. Reaching out to MPs was accomplished through partnering with Engineers Canada. The hard work of this committee was recognized by PEO in September at a Queen’s Park reception where the chapter received the GLP award for all the hard work and events that had been completed over the past year. Two major events that were run in the past year were the Eastern Region Candidate College and the Eastern Region Infrastructure Forum.

PEO Eastern Region Candidate College – 16 June 2010

54 people attended the PEO Eastern Region Candidate College held at the University of Ottawa campus. The group peppered the attending politicians with questions that showed a keen interest in the processes and a desire to learn from the experiences of our panel members. Senator Mac Harb, MP Pierre Poilievre, MPP Phil McNeely and Ottawa City Councillor Marianne Wilkinson did not disappoint.

With continued interest, after the formal program had ended those in attendance gathered and continued with informal discussions on the evening’s topics with the invited panellists and each other. With the excellent representation of licensed members present, the pointed and probing questions from the attendees and passion for sharing their experiences shown by the panel, it is without a doubt that Eastern Ontario will continue to be well represented in the legislature by professional engineers.

Eastern Region Infrastructure Forum – Thursday 25 N ov 2010

Minister of Infrastructure Bob Chiarelli, MPP Ottawa West-Nepean, made the keynote address to a gathering of 150+ Professional Engineers, University Students & invited guests at a special Infrastructure Forum & Panel Discussion event. In his address, Minister Chiarelli emphasized funding is only one part of the solution to the infrastructure concerns the province faces. According to Minister Chiarelli, time is of the essence in developing a long-term strategy as much of Ontario’s infrastructure is quickly reaching the end of its useful lifespan.

11. OSPE Liaison Report It was a great a privilege to be the PEO Ottawa Chapter Liason to OSPE, and I am pleased with the advancement achieved with PEO – OSPE relations. Highlights for the year:

• PEO Ottawa Chapter received $250 contribution for the joint Museum of Science & Technology "behind the scenes" Tour event on Thursday 30 September 2010. This was the first joint venture with OSPE, and allowed the event to have sufficient funds to proceed.

• OSPE also supported the Engineers in Training (EITs)/Internationally Trained Engineers (ITEs) Information Sessions held on Friday October 8, 2010. These sessions permitted attendees to learn about the benefits of PEO and OSPE membership.

• Past President and Chair of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) Michael Monette, P.Eng, was the Master of Ceremonies at the Eastern Region Infrastructure Forum on Thursday 25 November 2010.He was also a member of the Organizing Committee.

There is an ongoing need for greater OSPE representation in regions outside Ottawa. By: Guy Boone, P.Eng.
