The University of Louisville’s Delphi Center: Empowering the Effectiveness of Managerial and Professional Talent
You are about to experience a new level in professional development. It is based on the understanding that company vision begins at the top, but the power of a company’s productivity, innovation and empowerment culture rests with first-line, department and division management. Companies which understand that leader-ship is necessary at all levels enjoy greater productivity, accountability and employee engagement, as well as greater retention, teamwork and progressive initiative.
That is why the University of Louisville created a management development series that is a unique combination of management competencies taught with a leadership perspective. We provide essential management tools and the hands-on experience that drives results. Participants will understand the power of embracing goals, rather than just setting them. They will appreciate a leader’s role in empower-ing others, rather than just guiding them. They will grasp the knowledge that com-petencies such as effective communication do not just convey ideas, but stimulate others to build on the vision of the company. This creates a culture that fosters trust, critical thinking, and dramatic contributions from all employees.
New approach designed for impactSupported by the University’s Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning, this
professional development series brings a fresh sense of involvement to a learning environment. Participants leave ready to make an impact. The unity of strong core concepts, a leadership perspective and learning innovation results in a manage-ment series that will raise individuals and organizations to new levels of impact and empowerment.
Growing leaders at all levels This series is designed for individuals and organizations looking to step up in
leadership impact:
For managers, professionals and directors, workshops are designed to provide key skills and leadership applications that will increase individual effectiveness and leader-ship capabilities. Those who participate in a strategic combination of classes will
also receive a University of Louisville Certificate in Management or Professional Development. Details are included on page 24.
For those in purchasing and project management, we also offer specific certificate programs in addition to our individual management courses (see pages 26-27).
For HR and training directors, this program can be ef-fective in four ways: 1) individuals can be enrolled in specific workshops, 2) individuals can also be enrolled in a series of key programs leading to UofL certificates,
3) on-site versions of these or customized courses can be developed for your organi-zation, and 4) there are special programs specifically designed for HR leaders. (see page 25 for HR information).
How do we know it works? Our programs are also the foundation for the talent development program at the University
of Louisville, where over 200 managers and leaders participate in these workshops on an
on-going basis.

Professional development strategically focused, organizationally effective
This Management Empowerment series is designed by University of Louisville instructors to enhance the professional and organizational impact of managers and supervisors. It provides workshops that build the five competencies critical for lead-ing productivity and engagement. These individual competencies (in the shapes) enable managers to effectively address the five factors that help organizations thrive (in the grey circle).
Driving your organization:
Effective organizations grow as the result of proactive planning and responsive ef-ficiency. Their managers and leaders combine best-practice capabilities with out-of-the-box thinking. They leverage people, processes and growth issues and opportunities. Our workshops are designed to help individuals have a dra-matic and immediate impact on their organizations and their own careers by ensuring their skills and perspectives are applicable to what matters to their businesses.
Our model of effectiveness reflects the five factors that are essential to organizational success: 1. Effective Communication and Employee Interaction which are honed through the ap-
plication of motivation skills and the ability to communicate appropriately.
2. The development of an Innovative Culture which enables others to excel. This reflects a bridge between motivation and leadership and management skills.
3. Productivity and Change for improvement, both of which require the combination of empowering leadership and organizational tools.
4. Problem Resolution within the context of internal and external opportunities. This demands the unity of critical thinking skills with an understanding of what drives productivity to address seen and unforeseen challenges.
5. Idea Stimulation to proactively create competitive advantages for an organization. This powerful attribute demands the ability to critically assess threats and op-portunities while clearly presenting new ideas and aligning others to the vision as possible only through impactful communications.
The Delphi Center’s programs develop leader-based management skills and insights necessary to fully leverage the talent of those who impact their businesses. Infusing these skills in all levels of an organization creates a culture of focused empowerment and the greatest potential for productivity, employee engagement and growth. Each of our workshops will help individuals gain those key skills in ways that they can become immediately beneficial to their business’ success.

Management & Leadership Principles
Effective Management for Supervisors: Getting the Maximum Results from Others
How to Make Legal and Objective Hiring Decisions–and Find Your Most Effective Employees
Effective supervisors know how to stimulate others to enhance
their productivity. They know management is more than
assigning and monitoring tasks. It is a combination of skills,
relationships and focus. During this popular seminar, you’ll learn
how to develop the traits of effective supervisors, how to lead
your employees to new levels of change, and how to use proven
delegation and empowerment strategies.

organization’s vision

•Create a culture of teamwork
Today’s talent management requires a mix of skill assessment, fit

non-discriminatory and objective fashion—using a matrix-based

these challenging times? During this thought-provoking, popular
seminar, you’ll learn how to get the best from younger workers as
well as “baby boomers” and your more senior employees. You’ll

the demands of our challenging times.

new ways
Setting and Managing Goals that Work!
New, half-day format!
Goal setting is one of the most valuable tools for achieving success
in the workplace. Without goals, people are unfocused and
productivity suffers. However, too often the goals that are set are
ineffective, contradictory, unmotivating and simply ignored.
“Setting and Managing Goals that Work!” provides tools and a
focus on goal setting that result in an engaged workforce, effective
teamwork, higher morale, improvements in productivity and
performance, higher accountability, and a pay-for-measurable-
performance culture that employees will embrace.
You’ll Learn to:
• Prioritize goals to accomplish the right tasks at the right time to
achieve the right vision
•Communicate realistic goals that engage others
•Avoid critical goal-setting mistakes
• Eliminate unproductive and performance-hindering activities
• Lead a team to aggressively accomplish its goals
• Set effective and S-M-A-R-T goals that lead to future success as well

Finance for Non-Financial Managers
The Effective Manager’s Secret Weapon: Keys to Positive and Constructive Feedback(Formerly “The Good, the Bad and
the Ugly: How to Give Positive and
Constructive Feedback”)
The best run companies have clear vision and strategies based on
data-driven analysis. Every manager and department becomes more
effective when they understand the essential and incredible power
of making decisions based on financial and accounting information.
But you don’t have to be a numbers guru to simply know what to
look for and what to use.
This easy-to-understand seminar will help anyone optimize
decision-making through the effective use of financial statements
and reports, department summaries and other financial data.
You’ll Leave with the Ability to:
•Better communicate with your firm’s financial personnel
• Evaluate the profitability of new products, services, equipment
replacements, leases and more
•Better present your ideas and recommendations based on
financial projections
•Understand ratios, balance sheets, income and cash flow statements
•Apply the impact of business decisions on your firm’s profitability
• Evaluate and compare your firm’s financial position to your
competitors’ and to the industry as a whole
Feedback is the single factor that motivates or demoralizes a
workforce. How you or your staff provides feedback will result in
an engaged staff excited about their impact on an organization or
a disengaged staff reluctant to contribute or innovate. That’s why
it is often called “an effective manager’s secret weapon.” Giving
feedback—both positive and constructive—on an employee’s
performance is a necessary skill for every supervisor. During
this seminar, you will learn insightful and appropriate keys to
correcting poor performance and giving praise and recognition in
ways that move any employee to more aggressively contribute to
an organization.
This Workshop Will Empower Participants to:
• Focus on the long-range potential of each employee
• Identify and leverage the impact of emotions on morale
and productivity
•Address and correct recurring performance problems, turning
problems into possibilities
•Determine when to include employee assistance and develop a
referral plan
•Understand the barriers to giving effective recognition
• Tailor a plan of recognition for employees that creates a
foundation for higher level productivity

Brain Boosters for Success I: How to Expand Your Ability to Think, Learn, Concentrate and Remember
Overcoming Indecision: Becoming a More Decisive and Impactful Leader
New, half-day format!
Today’s most successful leaders process and identify information
that is critical to enhancing their organization and their
people. But we are faced with overwhelming levels of changing
responsibilities…new technology…new information…information
overload. It’s not what we have to process, it’s knowing how to
selectively and more effectively process what we need to use.
It comes down to understanding how to use our brains more
efficiently. Take time for one of the most enjoyable and valuable
workshops you can attend and learn skills critical to surviving and
thriving in the workplace of today and in the future. This workshop
will give you tools and insights to help you develop personalized
strategies for meeting these challenges.
You Will Learn to:
•Use proven learning strategies to overcome and process
information overload
•Apply memory techniques to store, manipulate and retrieve the
most important information effectively

and efficient

• Boost your concentration on what really matters—anytime, anywhere!

The smooth and profitable functioning of any organization depends
on the skillful decision making of all its members. People who
know and practice the techniques of good decision making are
valuable assets to their companies or departments. But it is so
easy to become victims of “analysis paralysis” because so much
information—or lack of desired information—often confuses
the decision process. Learn how to confidently come to powerful
decisions through several key strategies to overcome indecision, the
number one most common obstacle in problem solving.
During this Seminar, You Will:
• Focus on the key issues of how to make more effective decisions
and solve problems
•Discover strategies to identify what drives indecision and delays
• Learn techniques that encourage proper decisions
• Learn how leaders weigh the options of premature decisions,

How to Stay Focused in Stressful Times
Stress is normal. It is not only a natural defense mechanism, it can
also be (surprisingly) a stimulus for new ideas and motivation.

Formal & Interactive Communication
Successful people not only develop ideas, they have the ability to communicate those ideas, and
align and influence others to join in their fulfillment. Special skills are required to become the type
of leader who can convey concepts and influence others to share their vision. These are the critical
communication skills that separate those who dream of what could be and those who achieve it.
Breakthrough Formal Communication Workshops
We are pleased to present a number of workshops that address the “formal” communication skills
that maximize a manager’s ability to use written, verbal, presentation, and listening skills that
instill excitement and support for ideas and direction. These workshops enhance the impact of a
leader’s vision, the understanding and support of those ideas and the ability of others to build on the
foundation of what a leader is creating for a department or organization.
Business Writing that Gets Attention, Support and Results
Effective writing is not just presenting ideas, it is gaining advocates
for those ideas. But it is not naturally developed, it must be learned.
This popular workshop reveals key techniques used by professional
business writers that will make it easy to create attitude-changing
and impact-generating documents.
You’ll Leave with Professional Techniques for:
•Making your writing more reader-friendly and idea-effective
•Understanding and analyzing your reader, making each
document more appropriate and influential

Get It Write: Grammar and Editing for Business Communications
Grammar rules for business constantly change and some are no
longer applicable. Keeping your skills current is a must for anyone
responsible for business communications.
Effective formal business writing involves more than following
rules. Similarly, typographical and grammatical errors are more
than silly mistakes—they are a reflection of the image and quality of
your company.
The techniques you’ll learn at this seminar will help you avoid
writers’ and editors’ most common pitfalls – improper punctuation,
misspellings, grammatical miscues, misused words, and poor
sentence structure. You’ll learn how to spot and correct these
mistakes and improve the impact and professional image of your
business correspondence.
If you wish, bring samples of your company’s writing for
confidential review. Included with your take-home materials is a
proofreader’s checklist to help you “get it write” for your company
every time.
You’ll Also Learn:
•Recent changes in the rules of business usage and style
• Tips for focusing attention to catch the most subtle mistakes

Dynamic Interactive Communication
Presented ideas need the support of others if they are to be effectively developed and incorporated into
the vision of a department or organization. One of the key reasons managers fail is their inability to
align others around a focused objective and to motivate others to accept and enhance these objectives as
their own. The following workshops are uniquely designed to enhance the interactive communication
skills of managers and engage others around their ideas and visions. From the subtle to the direct, these
skills are critical for effective leadership at any level and in almost any situation.
More Effective Verbal Communication: Blending Assertiveness, Honesty and Power
Do you get caught in the middle of being too assertive in some
situations and too reflective in others? It’s a fine line to walk, but
to be heard effectively, it takes special skill and understanding.
Once addressed, however, these factors result in greater excitement
from your audiences, increased confidence in your own ability to
persuade and engage, and clearer direction and alignment from
everyone. It’s a vital skill often underappreciated and underutilized,
but the best leaders understand and apply it.
This workshop examines the three communication styles people use
when dealing with others: passive, assertive, and aggressive. It will
help you find a balance between “being a push-over” and “coming
on too strong.”
Attending Will Help You:
• Improve your and others’ effectiveness and productivity
•Create win-win relationships with you and those with whom
you communicate
•Build confidence and a positive self-image with you and your staff
• Speak up with greater ease
•Create a culture of respect and openly shared ideas
•Avoid conflict and power struggles

The Polished Professional: Getting Ahead Using the Unwritten Rules of Success
Success and recognition in today’s business climate demand more
than skills and credentials. They also require an understanding of
the subtle nuances of working with others and within a culture of
expected behaviors and appearances. To join the most successful
people, you need to know how to nurture relationships, how to
promote yourself most effectively (without bragging), and how to
create advocates for your ideas.
You’ve seen that the most qualified employees are not always the
most skilled. However, they are usually the most credible and
the most “polished.” This workshop will add the skills of how to
package yourself to get the attention you deserve.

•Communicate with greater credibility and personal power
• Influence others and have your ideas recognized and supported
•Get your work noticed

Emotional Intelligence: the Foundation for Lifelong Professional and Organizational Success
It happens all the time: visionaries get fired, potential star
employees fail to meet expectations, groups of the most promising
staff can’t seem to get the job done. It’s not for a lack of skill or
desire; it is often simply an understanding of how to recognize
and apply our own and others’ feelings in the workplace. This has
become the foundation for the impact of Emotional Intelligence*,
insights that even the most seasoned executives often lack.
However, when properly understood and applied, it creates a
new, more consistent level of star performance throughout an
organization and throughout an individual’s career.
Emotional Intelligence can be learned and developed. Start reaping
the many benefits of EI by registering for this seminar!
You Will Discover:
• EI’s relationship to IQ—why relationships are as important as
skill-sets
• The value of EI at different job levels
•How to use EI to dramatically increase productivity and
performance
•What makes emotionally intelligent organizations more
successful and their people more engaged
•How to use 3 popular EI assessments to enhance your
organization’s culture and productivity
•How to implement EI to enhance customer and coworker
relationships
•How EI develops personal leadership ability and perceptions

Research indicates that, for jobs of every type, Emotional Intelligence
is twice as important as IQ and technical skills combined. Moreover, EI
accounts for 85% of what separates star performers from average ones.
*Daniel Goleman, author of the best-
seller, Working with Emotional Intelligence,
describes EI as “recognizing and managing
our own feelings and those of others—the
fundamentals upon which are built such
important organizational competencies as
outstanding leadership, customer service
and teamwork.”

Forget Superman and Wonder Woman!Make Empowerment Your Competitive Advantage
What do Superman and Wonder Woman have in common? Well, aside from a shared choice
in clothing colors, they both have superhuman powers to get things done. Wonder Woman’s
bracelets fend off bullets. Superman can fly and scan for emergencies and quickly take care
of problems. They seem able to handle almost any challenge.
But skills alone don’t make leadersYou see, super heroes mostly react to problems and usually work alone. They only handle
one problem at a time. And they are lousy at succession planning. Organizations that
succeed recognize that real power comes from infusing strong leadership throughout the
organization. This creates true EMPOWERMENT.
The evidence of empowermentEmpowerment results when an organization creates leaders at all levels. Many leaders
are able to address many problems and raise the productivity of numerous departments
and functions. It means pushing decision making down to the lowest possible level in the
organization. Decision making and decisive action are released right where the action is.
Customers love it because the people who serve them are more solution focused and action
ready. Leaders love it because their employees are more productive, which frees them to be
more proactive and visionary. The empowered employees love it because they can be more
responsive, innovative and engaged. Their ideas are not only effectively presented, they
are embraced and developed. They also have the opportunity to leverage their individual
strengths in the manner where they and their organization are most fulfilled.
The requirements of empowermentThis is why visionary companies continuously invest in their people. And why visionaries
invest in themselves. Leaders at all levels seek to improve their knowledge and skills. They
get energized from new ideas. They want new ways to stimulate others. And, as stated in
Good to Great, they recognize their own weaknesses and humbly but aggressively push
themselves to become better leaders.
Effective leaders at all levels continuously enhance their skills in communication,
motivation, productivity, and critical thinking as well as management. This allows them to
address problems through others as well as through their own insights.
This is the focus behind leader-based management. It requires a special drive and vision
from individuals and companies. It changes stagnant “organizations” into dynamic
“organisms” that continuously improve. It transforms managers and supervisors into leaders.
May you enjoy the continuous growth and the ongoing journey as you reach these new
levels.
