• To improve the quality of teaching of in-service

Mathematics and Science teachers at previously

disadvantaged secondary schools;

• To improve the NSC Mathematics and Science

results (pass rates and quality of passes) in previously

disadvantaged secondary schools;

• To integrate appropriate Techno-blended support

models into the T&L of Maths and Science at

secondary schools

• To research sustainable and practical solutions to

the Mathematics and Science education crisis in SA;

• To provide leadership in Maths and Science

education and stimulate the dialogue around

practical solutions

GMMDU & FRF Chair Objectives:

Reference - 21st Century Teaching and

Learning

How can teachers be assisted to

understand how technology can be

used to facilitate meaningful

learning?

How can technology and resultant pedagogy of today be harnessed in an

innovative way to create more engaging and relevant Maths and Science

learning experiences for learners in SA?

Key Points • Teaching - innovation, problem solving, critical

thinking, creativity, analysis of data

• Learning must be flexible and more personalized

• T&L models –Connectedness, facilitate networking

and learning communities

• Classrooms and Schools – environments that are

responsive to how new generation learners learn

• Teacher Shortage: South Africa cannot continue to rely solely on current

systems to train more and better teachers CDE, 2011.

• Teacher Qualifications: 60% of mathematics teachers

had completed a degree (vs 87% avg. internationally)

• Teacher Practice and Motivation: Absence from class rooms in

previously disadvantaged schools result in loss of 3 years

of teaching time (out of 12 years) – HSRC report

• School Infra-structure: Thousands of schools in

South Africa lack the infrastructure necessary to

provide learners with the quality education which they

are legally entitled to receive

- Equal Education Campaign - 2013

• T&L Resources: Each year thousands of learners are

without textbooks and access to libraries etc.

Learners have changed radically.

Our learners today are not the same people

our education system was designed to teach.

Marc Prensky - 2001

New approaches to Teaching Maths and

Science are needed:

The world has changed dramatically

Page 10: Prof WA Olivier Secondary Schools - nstf.org.za

• Cannot imagine a world without a remote

control/mouse

• Highly connected and technologically eager

• See technology as an essential part of their

lives – thrives on an appropriate digital diet

Why? To benefit our Learners – the Ne(X)t

Create innovative modern T&L platforms and scaffolding

support for teachers and learners that integrate appropriate

technologies which are compatible with the secondary school

system and broader environment in South Africa

Develop, implement and research:

• Professional Mathematics and Science skills

development programmes for in-service teachers,

• Classroom implementation of the techno-blended

T&L model for Maths and Science in schools;

• Structured incubation programmes for learners with

potential

Use of appropriate modern technologies as assistive

tools/mediating agents to:

• create constructivist T&L environments;

• facilitate optimal visualization and multiple

representation of Mathematics and Science content

in action;

• establish scaffolding platforms aimed at maximal

support of proximal developmental zones for

teachers and learners. As informed, inter alia, by:

Piaget – Cognitive Developmental Theory

Vygotsky – Socio-cultural Theory –Scaffolding within PDZ’s

Theoretical Framework for Techno-blended

Teaching and Learning Model (TBM)

Harness the potential complementary relationship

between technology and constructivism.
