    There is a mismatch in the kind ofhousing being built versus the demandfor housing.

    There is a need to develop diverse housingstock that includes smaller homes and

    affordable rental housing to accommodateincreased Latino housing demand.

    Latinos are particularly affected by thelack of affordable housing because they

    make up a large proportion of the lowerend of the labor market. This then,leads to overcrowding. It is important

    to understand that overcrowding is notnecessarily a choice, but a result ofeconomic, cultural, and larger familysize.

    Roundtable participants suggested thatmunicipalities consider developing flexiblehousing ordinances that would address theeconomic, cultural an life-cycle issues ofovercrowding

    In order to address overcrowding,Round table participants suggested

    that community education andgovernment regulations must work intandem. There is a need to focus on

    education to relive overcrowdingrather than strictly on enforcementmeasures.

    It is also important to understandthat Many Latino residents havenever been exposed to the concepthousing ordinances, as they are notcommon in Mexico. This can lead to

    misunderstanding and sometimestension between neighbors.
