3 The H&R Group2 The H&R Group

H&R stands for Hansen & Rosenthal, a traditional Hamburg family firm whose chemical special product business goes back four generations. H&R, through its group member Klaus Dahleke KG, is one of the biggest suppliers of process oils for the rubber industry. A major part of the H&R product portfolio are paraffinic and aromatic label free oils.

For these oils we have a high market share in the specialised label free oil business. These products have a high impact for all parts of the tire compounds. H&R is a worldwide partner to the tire industry and has invested in refineries and service plants to achieve high service levels and standards.

1. 8 individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are limited with max. 10 ppm.

2. A marker, Benzo(a)pyrene is limited with max. 1 ppm.

3. The a. m. limits are met if the DMSO extract (IP 346) is less than 3 % as long as the correlation between the values from 1) to 3) has been proved latest every 6 months.

4. Finished tyres have to be tested by the bay proton NMR (ISO 21461).

REACH is the new European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006). It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances. The new law entered into force on 1 June 2007. All H&R products are already pre-registered. Final registration has been completed by the end of 2010.

The Directive 2005/69/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council started from 1st January 2010 as a basis for plasticizers in tyres in the EU and many other countries of the world.

The major concerns of this regulation are:

The Regulation (EC) No. 1222/2009 is scheduled for 2012. This regulation will give a direct hint to the tyre customer concerning fuel efficiency and other performance parameters. All different plasticizers have a specific impact in rolling resistance, wet and dry traction as well as abrasion resistance.

Mineral oil plasticizers are all suitable to extend rubbers and their compounds. The individual applications depend on the polarity of the oil and rubber to achieve the optimum compatibility.

That means for high styrenic compounds, e. g. tread compounds, TDAE is the optimal choice regarding low tox oils.

Depending on the polarity of technical rubber goods compounds different kind of oils are needed. High polar rubbers, e.g. polychloroprene, need high polar plasticizers like aromatics; unpolar rubbers, e.g. EPDM, need unpolar plasticizers like paraffinics.

PIONIER TP 130 B and J are suitable alternatives to replace Phthalates such as e.g. DEHP (Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate also known as DOP (Dioctyl phthalate), DBP (Dibutyl phthalate) or DINP (Diisononyl phthalate) inNBR and PVC compounds used in several applications. This new alternative products can achieve the samelevel or improve the properties of NBR and PVC materials. The use of PIONIER TP 130 B and J as substitutesfor traditional phthalates is feasible and helpful when meeting the new environmental standards.

Materials based on polychloroprene (CR), chlorinated polyethylene (CM), chlorosulfonated polyethelene (CSM), nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR), ethylene-propylene terpolymer (EPDM), ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVM), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) have been successfully used in wire and cable industry for a long time.

The following properties are essential for cable and wire applications:

• great electrical characteristics;• good ozone and weathering resistance;• high tensile strength and elongation at break;• good oil resistance;• good tear propagation resistance;• excellent insulation in water;• long service.

H&R offers a range of products with excellent performance and benefits for the selected application, likeplasticizers with different viscosities and waxes with various compositions.

Ozone and UV light are destroying rubber articles. That is why H&R provides a wide range of Anti Ozone Waxes for various rubber applications.

Special wax materials, added in excess of their solubility in rubbers will bloom to the surface after vulcanization. The related film provides protection against sun and Ozone cracking as long as the film remains intact. The right blend of low and high molecular weight waxes leads to an optimum in Ozone protection.

Food grade and medicinal applications require the highest degree of hydrofinishing. This type of oil is named medicinal white oil (WOM). Medicinal white oils are always needed if the finished article has direct contact to food (e.g. packaging films), skin (e.g. potable water sealings) and mucosa membranes (e.g. hoses for stomach tubes).

The relevant regulation is described in FDA 21 CFR178.3620 (a).

FDA 21 CFR178.3620 (b) & (c) are required for indirect food contact and/or animal food.
