IGFS® role in N&TS GROUP Payment Solutions

Enterprises increasingly require access to tokenization technology and fraud prevention. ECommerce is growing rapidly, with a significant expanding trend. The peculiarities of this channel require high security standards to protect merchants along with all the stakeholders involved in the process. This may not always be straightforward, since companies have to face the complexity of managing multiple circuits, payment streams, currencies and languages. The physical absence of card and cardholder rule out traditional swiping or chip & PIN verification systems, and requires authentication methods di�erent from face-to-face dynamics.

ECommerce payments in particular require special

attention because of the necessity to acquire and

store sensitive customer information, that is then

used for all future transactions. Tokenization

successfully solves this security issue by storing locally

only an image (a “token”) representing the actual

data, which is recalled from the secure processing

server only when needed for an authorized

transaction.

The PCI (Payment Card Industry) Council places strict rules and guidelines on the required security, since breaches potentially damage trust in the entire industry: these rules are enforced with terms of liability that place responsibility on the player with the lowest level of PCI compliance. Further complexity is added to this scenario by the di�erences in the authentication process determined by geographical area - in Europe the 3D Secure standards are widely adopted, while in the US cardholder authentication typically occurs through personal data. In a multi-acquiring scenario, variable fees can add up to generate a bulk of hidden costs that hinder the smooth flow of business processes and reporting.
