Commentary:~Written test-25 Multiple Choice Questions~Power question has multiple parts/hard/challenging~10 Ciphering questions need to be quick/hard/think under 2 minutes~Script: what Pomerance reads and what I want to add/subtract~look at sample problems to develop ideas.~go to theartofproblemsolving.com to get volume 1~Do 35 multiple choice questions first so we can eliminate bad and keep the good ones later

Date/Time:

10/21/114:30PM-7:30 PM

Activity:Research sample problems

Commentary:~Power question lasts about 20 minutes~JV is up until trigonometry or pre-calculus~Trigonometry like geometry is ok (like regular cosine, sine, and tangent)~Need to have to Oglesby by the first of January (the majority of them)~problems tend to apply multiple concepts into one question

Activity:Research for research paper

Commentary:~What needs to be included in a math tournament is good material for project~Students level of perception is key to developing questions~The way one presents the problem affects the overall perception~Quotes need to weave into text

Activity:Rough draft/final copy of research paper

Commentary:~The point of tournaments is to test a student’s overall understanding of math as a whole.~Different teaching styles can change the way a student understands a subject or what they perceive as important.~There are different types of learners out there. (students learn in a variety of ways)~Relate the methods to helping a student learn in the classroom to the activities in a tournament.~The issue of levels of knowledge known/categorized by JV and Varsity levels in tournaments.~The reason for different activities in tournaments is to help with fairness.

Date/Time:

11/27/1112PM-1PM3:30PM-4:50PM

Activity:Researched/solved sample ciphering questions

Commentary:~Involves more than one process and not too complicated applied math as an extra~Tests the student’s ability to see connections among different math topics~vary the topics so there is variety~apply algebraic equations into geometric concepts to create complex multi-part questions with a diagram (maybe power question?) use for multiple choice as well

Date/Time:

12/1/116:30PM-9:45PM

Activity:Worked on ciphering questions

Commentary:~Problems arise with how to formulate questions. What subjects?!~Is it hard to solve?~Only finished the first ciphering question~look at old notes and draw up from examples~ask Oglesby if this is a good start

12/9/1111:30AM-11:40AM

Activity:Show/talk to Oglesby about ciphering questions done each night

Commentary:~Only one or two easy ones. Should have more hard/medium questions near the top level of JV~Ciphering has to be under 2 minute level questions or even 1 minute~Hard revolves around Algebra 2 and geometry put together~Ciphering has no calculator and a time limit~Diagrams should not be too obvious~Specify what you want~Simplified answers to the fullest~no decimals~make a twist?~more than one way to answer

Activity:Researched/worked/created JV ciphering questions

Commentary:~Takes longer than expected~Looking at past tests helps you compare your questions to the past~Rate level of hardness on examples~Have to type so images have to be done on geometry sketch pad~Do not do similar problems~No two problems involve similar concepts~not as much formulas as concepts and understanding of material~Test the questions on friends to see level of hardship~Remember my level is higher than JV so no calculus!

Activity:Researched/worked on Multiple choice questions and got input from Mr. Oglesby (mainly him on 12/14/11)

Commentary:~Cannot use calculator on MC so make math hard but not time consuming number wise~Explain clearly how you came to the answer because participants get the answers back to see how/what they should have done~Label figures clearly so there is no confusion and show how it relates to the problem~5 answers always because it is multiple choice~Answer E should be “None of the above” just in case a mistake is made~put answers under question for Oglesby to review and for the answer sheet to be given to participants

Activity:Finished up multiple choice questions and researched/did power question

Commentary:~Explanations are the hardest part at the moment~Try putting answer the student could get but are not right due to forgetting a concept/step/or simple mathematical error~We don’t want them to get them all right. Present a challenge. Real thinkers/twists~See how long it takes me to do the test~Try seeing if I can answer them~Explanations clear enough?

Commentary:~Know the problem forwards and backwards. Leave no holes.~Some problems are good, but it is hard to explain, so look up concepts and detail to help with explanation~put better explanations step-by-step process of solving the problem~an answer should not be “none of the above” (the last problem)~reword to better understand~fix explanations that are too broad/not detailed enough

Activity:Review script and preparations for tournament

Commentary:~Must say the rules and state clearly where JV and Varsity are supposed to go.~Learn how to work stop watch~Practice when to say time intervals~Know what to do about refreshments and the break time~Be at school by 7:30AM~Check to make sure everyone has their names on their ciphering paper each time before proceedingNo name = no credit~Set up students apart so no cheating can happen. All facing the front so no wondering eyes~Know where to place the runners

Commentary:~Had to set-up food, bring in trophies, instruct proctors where to go, get ice from concessions, instruct runners~Greet schools, separate Varsity and JV: JV ciphering is first~Set up runners/students, pass out tests, start~Break and repeat with varsity (written test is taken by opposite level while the other does ciphering)~lunch break and during this time grading and in the event of a tie, follow the rules for tie-breakers~Individual and team scores go in team folders~Individual and team awards~Conclusion and thanking of teams and faculty~Clean-up and organization of trophies that teams might not have gotten.
