GABIONS - Galvanized and pVC (potyVinytChloride) coated Gabions are baskets made of 8x10 double twisted steel woven wire mesh, as per ASTM A97S-97 (Figs. 1, 2). Gabions are fiiled with stones at the project site to form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures such as retaining walls, channel linings, and weirs for erosion control projects (Fig. 3). The steel wire used in the manufacture of the gabion is heavily zinc coated soft temper steel. A PVC coating is then applied to piovide added protection for use in polluted environments where soils or water are acidic: in salt or fresh water, or wherever the risk of corrosion is present. The PVC coating has a nominal thickness of 0.02 in. (0.50 mm). The standard specifications of mesh_wire are shown in Tab.1. The gabion is divided into cells by means of diaphragms positioned at approximately 3 ft centers (Fig.1). ln order to reinforce the structure, all mesh panel edges are selvedged with a wire having a greater diameter (Tab. 3). Dimensions and sizes of pVC coaled gabions are shown in Table 2. All tests wire must be per{ormed prior to manufacturing the mesh. 1. Tensile strenqth: the wire used for the manufacture of gabions and the lacing wire, shall have a tensile strength bltween 54,000-70,000 psi (38-48 kg/mm2) according to ASiM A641_g7. Wire tolerances (Tab.3) are in accordance with ASTM 4641_97. 2. Elonqation: Elongation shall not be less than 1Z%, in accordance with ASTM A370-92. Test must be carried out on a sample at least 12 in. (30 cm) long. 3. Zinc coatino: minimum quantities of zinc shown at Tab. 3 meet the requirements of ASTM 4641-97, Class lll soft temper coating. 4. Adhesion of zinc: the adhesion of the zinc coating to the wire shall be such that, when the wire is wrapped six turns around a mandrel having four times the diameter of the wire, it does not flake or crack when rubbing it with the bare fingers, in accordance with ASTM 4641-97. PVC COATING CHARACTERISTICS The technical characteristics and the resistance of the pVC to ageing meet the relevant standards. The main values for the PVC material are as follows: Specific aravitv 81-84 pcf (1.30-1.35 kg/dm3,) in accor_ dance with ASTM D792 Table 1; Hardness: between 50 and 60 Shore D, according to ASTM D 2240; Tens.ile strenqth: not less than 2,9g5 psi (20.6 Mpa), ac_ cording to ASTM D412-92; Modulus of elasticitv. not less than 2,700 psi (1g.6 Mpa), in accordance with ASTM D412-92: 4bgsion resistance: the percentage of the weight loss shall be less lhan 127", according to ASTM D1242-g>. LACING AND FILLING
Lacing operations can be made by using the tools shown in Fig.used instead of lacing wire (Fig. 4):Stainless steel rings for PVC coated products (Fig.6)- diameter: 0.12 in. (3.05 mm), ASTM A313, Type 302, Ctass I
Creepino corrosion: max. penetration of corrosion of thewire from a square cut end shall be 1 in. (25 mm) whenthe specimen has been immersed for 2,000 hrs in a 5%solution HCI (hydrochloric acid 12 Be).
The accelerated ageing tests are:
Salt sprav test test period 3,000 hours, test methodASTM 8117-94;Exposure to UV ravs: test period 3,000 hours at 145.F(63"C), test method ASTM D1499-92a and ASTM G2g-93apparatus Type E;Briftleness temperature: no higher than 15.F (- 9.C), orlower temperature when specified by the purchaser, whentested in accordance with ASTM D746The propeties after ageing tests shall be as follows:Appearance of coated mesh: no cracking, stripping or airbubbles, and no appreciable variation in color;Specific Gravitu. variations shall not exceed 6%;Hardness: variations shall not exceed 10%;Tensile strenqth: variations shall not exceed 21o/o;Modulus of elasticitu variations shall not exceed 257o;Abrasion resistance: variations shall not exceed 10%;Brittleness temperature: shall not exceed + 64.F (+1g.C).
5. Stainless steel rings having the following specifications can be
- tensile strength: 222,000-253,000 psi(156-178 kg/mm2), ASTM A313-92.Spacing of the rings must not exceed six (6) inches (Fig.4).
Fill the gabion with stones. Gabion rocks shall range between 4 inches and 8 inches. The range in sizes may allow for a variation of57o oversize and/or 57" undersize rock, provided it is not placed on the exposed surface. ln all cases, ov-ersize rock shall not belarger than 12 inches, and the undersize rock shall not be smaller than 2 inches. Rocks shall be hard, angular to round, durable andof such quality that they shall not disintegrate on exposure to water or weathering during the life of thdstructure. Care should betaken when placing the stone to assure that the PVC coating on gabions will not be damaged. All visible faces should be carefullyhand-placed for appearance purposes.
