    Preface

The Product Release Bulletin: I101-11 Link Controller - Type A 11 (R355) describes how toconfigure and administer the I101-11 Link Controller for a StrataLINK network.

This manual is intended for system administrators.

Manual VersionThis is a new manual.

Manual OrganizationThis manual contains one chapter.

Chapter 1 describes how to configure and administer the I101-11 Link Controller for aStrataLINK network.

Related ManualsRefer to the following Stratus manuals for related documentation.

    • VOS Communications Software: StrataLINK Configuration and Administration (R192)

    • VOS System Administration: Starting Up and Shutting Down a Module or System(R282)

Notation ConventionsThis manual uses the following notation conventions.

    • Italics introduces or defines new terms. For example:

The master disk is the name of the member disk from which the module was

booted.• Boldface emphasizes words in text. For example:

Every module must have a copy of the module_start_up.cm file.

    Preface

    iv Preface

    • Monospace represents text that would appear on your terminal’s screen (such ascommands, subroutines, code fragments, and names of files and directories). For example:

    change_current_dir (master_disk)>system>doc

Monospace italic represents terms that are to be replaced by literal values. In thefollowing example, the user must replace the monospace-italic term with a literal value.

    list_users -module module_name

    • Monospace bold represents user input in examples and figures that contain both userinput and system output (which appears in monospace). For example:

    display_access_list system_default

    %dev#m1>system>acl>system_default

    w *.*

Key Mappings for VOS FunctionsVOS provides several command-line and display-form functions. Each function is mapped toa particular key or combination of keys on the terminal keyboard. To perform a function, youpress the appropriate key(s) from the command-line or display form. For an explanation ofthe command-line and display-form functions, see the manual Introduction to VOS (R001) .

The keys that perform specific VOS functions vary depending on the terminal. For example,on a V103 ASCII terminal, you press the and keys simultaneously to perform theINTERRUPT function; on a V105 PC/+ 106 terminal, you press the key on the numerickeypad to perform the INTERRUPT function.

Note: Certain applications may define these keys differently. Refer to thedocumentation for the application for the specific key mappings.

The following table lists several VOS functions and the keys to which they are mapped oncommonly used Stratus terminals and on an IBM PC ® or compatible PC that is running theStratus PC/Connect-2 software. (If your PC is running another type of software to connect toa Stratus host computer, the key mappings may be different.) For information about the keymappings for a terminal that is not listed in this table, refer to the documentation for thatterminal.

Online DocumentationStratus provides the following types of online documentation.

    • The directory >system>doc provides supplemental online documentation. It containsthe latest information available, including updates and corrections to Stratus manualsand a glossary of terms.

    • Stratus offers some of its manuals online, via StrataDOC, an online-documentationproduct that consists of online manuals and StrataDOC Viewer, delivered on aCD-ROM (note that you must order StrataDOC separately). StrataDOC Viewer allowsyou to access online manuals from an IBM PC or compatible PC, a Sun ® or

    Hewlett-Packard™ workstation, or an Apple®

    Macintosh®

computer. StrataDOCprovides such features as hypertext links and, on the workstations and PCs, text searchand retrieval across the manual collection. The online and printed versions of a manualare identical.

    Product Release Bulletin: I101-11 Link Controller - Type A 11 (R355) 1-1

    Chapter 1:The I101-11 Link Controller - Type A 11 1-

The I101-11 Link Controller - Type A 11 combines the functionality of the I101-10 LinkController - Type A 10 with universal direct current (UDC) power. (This document refers tothe I101-11 Link Controller - Type A 11 as the I101-11 Link Controller, and to the I101-10Link Controller - Type A 10 as the I101-10 Link Controller.) UDC power enables the I101-11Link Controller to operate in XA/R 8-slot, 10-slot, and 40-slot RISC-based systems. TheI101-11 Link Controller can also operate in XA400, XA600, and XA2000 systems.

The I101-11 Link Controller provides the following features:• conformance with central office (CO) and standard Stratus equipment requirements for

    input-to-output power isolation

    • microprocessor and data-transfer capabilities that are the same as those provided by theI101-10 Link Controller

    • compatibility with StrataLINK extenders, cables, and StrataHUBs.

To configure and administer the I101-11 Link Controller for a StrataLINK network, followthe procedures described in this document in addition to the procedures described in the

manuals VOS Communications Software: StrataLINK Configuration and Administration(R192) , VOS System Administration: Starting Up and Shutting Down a Module or System(R282) , and other related VOS System Administration manuals.

Note: For the I101-11 Link Controller, the procedures described in this document takeprecedence over the procedures described in the other manuals.

    Configuration and Administration Procedures

    Product Release Bulletin: I101-11 Link Controller - Type A 11 (R355) 1-3

Configuration and Administration ProceduresTo configure and administer the I101-11 Link Controller for a StrataLINK network, followthe procedures described in this section in addition to the procedures described in the manuals

VOS Communications Software: StrataLINK Configuration and Administration (R192) , VOSSystem Administration: Starting Up and Shutting Down a Module or System (R282) , andother related VOS System Administration manuals.

    Link-Controller Configuration

When installed on a module running VOS Release 11.1 (or a later release), the I101-11 LinkController can transfer 32 bits of data on to and off the StrataBUS, regardless of theconfiguration of link controllers.

    Link Boot of a Module

A link boot is the boot of a module over the StrataLINK network. A link boot affects the

data-transfer capabilities of the I101-11 Link Controller, depending on which release of VOSis running on the module from which you initiate the link boot.

    • If you initiate the link boot from a module that is running VOS Release 11.1 (or a laterrelease), all I101-11 Link Controllers in that module can transfer 32 bits of data on toand off the StrataBUS.

    • If you initiate the link boot from a module that is running a release of VOS earlier than11.1, all I101-11 Link Controllers in that module can transfer only 16 bits of data on toand off the StrataBUS.

For complete information on performing a link boot, see the manual VOS System

Administration: Starting Up and Shutting Down a Module or System (R282) .

    The Analyze-System Subsystem Request list_boards

The analyze-system subsystem request list_boards displays the model numbers of thethree link controllers. In the Model column of the list_boards display, I10111 indicatesthe I101-11 Link Controller, I10110 indicates the I101-10 Link Controller, and I10100 indicates the I101 Link Controller.
