DIRTT PRODUCT GUIDE

IntroductionThis document is a guide to the Electrical and Data solutions available for DIRTT Wall Systems. It includes code and standard references, electrical styles and levels, roles and responsibilities/scope of work, and power options. All installation questions should be directed to your DIRTT Project Manager (PM) or a DIRTT Field Technician (contact information is on your ‘DIRTT CARES’ card). Electrical CodesGenerally the components must be installed to meet the intent of the applicable electric code. The National Electric Code (NEC) or NFPA 70 is the regionally adopted standard in the US with the possibility of amendments adopted at each independent jurisdiction. The Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) or CSA C22.1 is the regionally adopted standard for installation of electrical equipment in Canada with possibility of amendments adopted at each independent jurisdiction.

DIRTT solutions should be communicated and reviewed with design engineers prior to order placement to confirm adequacy of the specified solution with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

DIRTT’s Solid Wall and Combination Wall have been evaluated and certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to QQXX (Prefabricated Assemblies) Sections and Units. UL Report Listing E468975 validates DIRTT factory installed electrical solutions (Levels 1 to 4, including use in Patient Care Areas per Artile 517 of NEC) within DIRTT Wall Frames to both NFPA 70/NEC and The Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) C22.2 No.22 1-12.

Patient CareDIRTT Level 3 and Level 4 Power (pre-wired electrical solutions) are suitable for use in Dry Location Patient Care Areas of Patient Care Facilities other than Anesthetizing Locations. It is NOT to be installed as part of the Emergency or Critical Branch circuits of a Hospital Electrical system. Where these requirements exist, DIRTT Power Level 1 or Level 2 electrical solutions must be specified. All devices, wiring and labor required to connect to the base building electrical system in these options are to be supplied and installed under permit by the Electrical Contractor. This work must be performed in accordance with the applicable code (i.e. NEC, CEC) to the satisfaction of the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) by inspection.

Where modular boxes with polymeric perimeter face rings (WSCS series) are specified, electric devices must employ a selfgrounding type device. Where DIRTT Power Level 1 and/or Level 2 electrical solutions are specified in Patient Care areas, the Electrical Contractor must be notified of this requirement to ensure proper grounding will be achieved. All receptacles must be Listed hospital-grade devices; isolated-ground receptacles shall not be used in Patient Care Areas.

All electrical solutions installed in Patient Care areas must be inspected before the finished tiles are installed. This is to verify the electrical system and ground path has been connected in accordance with NFPA 99 - Standard for Patient Care Facilities(USA) or Z32-09 -Standard Electrical Safety and Essential Electrical Systems in Patient Care Facilities (CAN) and/or other local code.

UL File Report - E468975 provides a more detailed breakdown of DIRTT solutions deemed acceptable for use in Patient Care areas in accordance with Section 24 of the Canadian Electric Code (CEC) and with Article 517 of the National Electric Code(NEC/NFPA 70).

Electrical StylesDIRTT offers both modular and conventional electrical solutions. These solutions are available in tiered options for electrical component inclusion. DIRTT refers to electrical options as Levels available in Level 1 to Level 4. The higher the electrical Level, the more components are supplied and installed by DIRTT and less labor and materials from the local Electrical Contractor.

The conventional electrical solution includes UL listed back boxes (see Figure 1). They require standard devices and screw in style faceplates. The modular solutions include slightly oversized UL/CSA Listed back boxes with an adjustable engineered plastic face enabling trim rings and faceplates to be “snapped in” (see Figure 2).

Electrical LevelsDIRTT offers two different levels of Conventional Electrical (Level 1 & 2) and four different levels of Modular Electrical (Level 1 through 4).

LEVEL 1

Level 1 Conventional Electrical Includes:

• Tile cut out

• Mounting brackets (factory installed)

• Conventional back box (factory installed)

• Optional frame vertical modification for horizontal power/data frame to frame pass-through:

Wall frame verticals on both sides of frame will be modified to provide 2 cutouts and a support bracket for frame to frame power/data pass-through (see “Electrical Pass-through Release for more information). These frames must be identified in ICE at time of order placement. This is an additional charge per frame; please consult DIRTT for current pricing.

*This level does not include rigid conduit (EMT), wiring and/or cabling, devices, or faceplates. These items are supplied and installed “by others” (electrical/data contractor) and must be coordinated with applicable parties accordingly.

Level 1 Modular Electrical Includes:

• Tile cut out

• Mounting brackets (factory installed)

• Modular back box (factory installed)

• Trim rings (shipped loose, field installed)

• Faceplates (shipped loose, field installed)

identified in ICE at time of order placement. This is an additional charge per frame; please consult DIRTT for current pricing.

*This level does not include rigid conduit (EMT), wiring and/or cabling, or devices. These items are supplied and installed “by others” (electrical/data contractor) and must be coordinated with applicable parties accordingly.

Level 1 Notes

This Level is typically used when power must run horizontally from frame to frame through holes drilled through the solid panel vertical frames. Level 1 electrical would be specified for power requirements in Condition A: beneath clerestory glass panels (glass in top segment of solid stack walls) or in Condition B: cornice height panels (walls that do not extend to the ceiling) where the power feed location is from the ceiling or wall.

• Condition A. If the power source is located in the ceiling, and power is required in the solid wall portion beneath a glass clerestory (stack wall); power cannot be run vertically through or between any glass segments of a Stack Wall. This is because vertical frame members of the DIRTT glass frame are not dimensionally wide enough for cable or conduit to pass-through.

• Condition B. If the power source is located in the ceiling, and cornice height product (walls that do not extend to the ceiling) is specified; power cannot be dropped from the ceiling directly into the frames below as they will be exposed. A corner post can be utilized to route and conceal power cables fed from the ceiling plenum to devices located in these panel types. These corner posts may require extensions or be ordered oversized (with all necessary trims) when used in conjunction with cornice height product. If horizontal drilling is required DIRTT will provide milled openings in the post for power pass through. Posts must be tagged in the ICE file for power pass though with relative AFF dimension.

• DO NOT specify Quirk corner posts if wiring must be extended around a corner to reach a distribution box.

• Even though DIRTT is NOT providing any wiring or devices for our Level 1 solution, when specifying the modular solution we must have an accurate device specifications to determine quantity of all associated modular faceplates and trim rings. Please ensure these are specified correctly in ICE and identify appropriate faceplate style and color.

• If power is run horizontally from frame to frame to accommodate power delivery, the flexibility of the movable wall is reduced. The power will have to be disconnected and uninstalled to remove any frame in the layout, whereas if it is fed directly to the top or bottom of the frame, adjacent panels without electrical can be removed without other trade involvement.

Level 2

Level 2 Conventional Electrical Includes:

• Tile cut out

• Mounting brackets (factory installed)

• Conventional back box (factory installed)

• ¾" ID EMT (for Power or Data) is fed to the top or bottom of the panel (factory installed). EMT will extend 6-8" above finished ceiling (after installation) for ceiling fed power or to the bottom of the frame for floor fed power. See also Level 2 notes for further EMT details.

Level 2 Notes

Some jurisdictions or conditions of use may restrict or prohibit the use of pre-wired electrical solutions, check with the Authority Having Jurisdiction for the install location to confirm conditions of use. Where pre-wired electrical components are not permitted, Level 2 and Level 1 electrical solutions can be specified.

• ¾" EMT will be cut 16-24" from its overall height, with the top section removed and secured to the lower portion of the EMT with zip ties from the factory for ease of shipping and installing frames. A coupler will also be included and attached onto the top end of the lower EMT to attach the upper EMT on-site. This enables panel frames with top fed power to be installed without having to compete with an EMT protruding from the top of the frame. Install like any other panel, then insert the top section of EMT through holes in Ceiling Track Electrical Spline Plates and couple the 2 sections of EMT together.

• At all multi-gang “conventional” box locations DIRTT will provide ¾" EMT (QTY 1) for power and ¾" EMT (QTY 1) for data. If additional EMT drops are necessary, they must be coordinated with DIRTT Environmental Solutions to ensure the appropriate solution is quoted, coordinated and delivered.

• At all multi-gang “modular” box locations DIRTT will provide ¾" EMT (QTY 1) for power and ¾" EMT (QTY 1) for each data faceplate specified.

• Even though DIRTT is NOT providing any wiring or devices for our Level 2 solution, when specifying the modular solution we must have an accurate device specifications to determine quantity of all associated modular faceplates and trim rings. Please ensure these are specified correctly in ICE and identify appropriate faceplate style and color.

LEVEL 3

Level 3 Modular Electrical Includes:

• Tile cut out

• Mounting brackets (factory installed)

• Modular back box (factory installed)

• Trim Rings (shipped loose field installed)

• Faceplates (shipped loose field installed)

• Armored cable with 12 gauge wire (factory installed) from the device to the top or bottom of the panel frame

extending an additional 10 feet from the top or bottom of the frame with a pigtail end (Power Whip) for hard wire connection to the appropriate base building junction box. See also DIRTT standard wiring provisions/schematics.

• Pre-wired factory installed 15 or 20 amp device

• ¾" EMT (for data) to the top or bottom of the panel (factory installed). EMT will extend 6-8" above finished ceiling (after installation) for ceiling fed power or to the bottom of the frame for floor fed power. EMT, when used in concert with a Level 3 or Level 4 DIRTT electrical solution, is grounded to the electrical back box with a #14 bond wire. See also Level 2 notes for further EMT details.

*This level does not include data cabling which is supplied and installed “by others” (electrical/data contractor) and must be coordinated with applicable parties accordingly. Hard-wired connection of the DIRTT supplied wiring to base building system at the nearest junction box is considered the responsibility of the Electrical Contractor and should be coordinated to ensure it is included in their scope of work.

Level 3 Notes

The concept of providing UL Certified factory pre-wired electrical solutions to the project site is to expedite the installation process of the delivered solution. The power whip shipped coiled in the wall frame merely need be extended to a predesignated J Box and hard wired to the base building system. While the DIRTT provisions are being manufactured off site at the factory, the Electrical Contractor can be installing the base building system.

• Gang Boxes with multiple devices must have devices specified correctly in ICE.

• DIRTT will require notification for all multi-gang electrical locations with multiple circuit requirements in order to provide the correct electrical cable solution that complies with each specific demand. These should be specified in ICE per box location.

• Single circuit power requirement will receive a 12-2 AC90-MC cable

• 2 circuit power requirement will receive a 12-3 AC90-MC cable

• 3 circuit power requirement will receive a 12-3 AC90-MC cable and a 12-2 AC90-MC cable

• Isolated Ground (IG), Ground Fault Interrupter (GFCI) or Split Circuit power device requirements must also be identified and specified in ICE per box location to ensure the proper devices and wiring are provided. See also Wiring Schematics

• IG devices will require a 12-3 AC90-MC cable with a insulated ground

• GFCI devices are a “special device” and will be wired as a standard convenience power outlet.

• Split Circuit devices will require a 12-3 AC90-MC cable.

• DIRTT will provide a ¾" EMT (QTY 1) for each data face plate location specified in ICE (modular style only). If multiple EMT feeds are required to a conventional box, they must be specified manually in ICE.

LEVEL 4

Level 4 Modular Electrical Includes:

• Tile cut out

• Mounting brackets (factory installed)

• Modular back box (factory installed)

• Trim rings (shipped loose, field installed)

• Faceplates (shipped loose, field installed)

• Listed (UL 183) electrical wiring system includes: pre-wired device, face plates and trim rings, box assembly, wiring harness with factory terminations to a modular connector component.

• Horizontally Fed Electrical Solution where power is fed from the ceiling and must be distributed through frames horizontally to a device wall box located under Glass Stack Walls or Cornice Height Walls. The power whip will extend 36" (914mm) from the box for attachment to a Splitter and subsequently to other extender cables connecting to the base building electrical system. Splitter, extender cables, and power whips required to power the devices in the wall from the base building system are provided and installed under separate contract. Final lengths are project specific, determined by the base building plenum height and distance to nearest connector.

• Full Height Walls with top or bottom power feeds. The power whip will run from the device box to the top or bottom of the frame (depending on feed location) extending beyond the frame for attachment to other quick connect electrical components that are mounted to the base building. Final modular whip lengths are project specific; determined by frame height, device box height, plenum height and feed location.

• Pre-wired device 15 or 20 amp (factory installed)

• ¾" ID EMT (for data) to the top or bottom of the panel (factory installed - supplied by DIRTT). EMT will extend 6-8" above finished ceiling (after installation) for ceiling fed data or to the bottom of the frame for floor fed data. EMT, when used in concert with a Level 3 or Level 4 DIRTT electrical solution, is grounded to the electrical back box with a #14 bond wire. See also Level 2 notes for further EMT details.

*All home runs and connection of the DIRTT electrical components to the base building electrical system is considered to be work performed “by others” (Electrical Contractor) under separate contract. Connection of DIRTT extender cables to each other, to power whips, and splitters should be coordinated with the Electrical Contractor, with roles and responsibilities clearly defined before orders are placed. All DIRTT electrical components and assemblies are UL Listed and easily connected to each other; however, job sites requiring union labor may require ALL connections be made by union electricians. This may impact labor costs and scheduling.

Level 4 Notes

The concept of Level 4 is to expedite installation and reconfiguration by providing a UL Certified quick connect solution for pre-wired devices in DIRTT frames to the base building electrical distribution system. While the walls are being manufactured at the factory, the electrical contractor can install the ceiling or floor mounted modular electrical components. When the walls are installed, the electrical contractor need only connect the modular heads from the DIRTT product to the modular heads previously field installed and connected to base building electrical distribution system.

A quick connect, plug and play electrical system does not need to be in place to utilize a level 4 solution. Modular whips with quick connect heads can be supplied with a pigtail end (exposed wires) to be hard wired into any existing or new junction box, thus extending power from the base building into the modular components.

• To supply this solution the final circuit drawings MUST be acquired from Electrical Engineer and forwarded to DIRTT in combination with a completed DIRTT Networks & Power Project Checklist.

• If quick connect components already exist in the base building, you must find out the manufacturer, system description, and wiring configuration of the existing system to ensure compatibility with quick connect components being provided by DIRTT Environmental Solutions Ltd.

• When specifying Level 4 electrical solution within DIRTT moveable walls; the DIRTT default will be 5-wire cable,

capable of 3 circuit distribution. Options will exist to specify a 3-wire cable (single circuit); OR an 8 wire cable (up to 4 circuits) for use with an 8-wire electrical distribution system or to provide a furniture feed from a wall box.

Note: DIRTT will review the final Electrical Engineers circuit drawings and suggest the best solution for the project requirements, and where possible will provide a consistent wiring solution.

• The DIRTT Partner is responsible for ordering all loose quick connect components (feeds, extender cables, and splitters) required from the factory installed electrical components in the DIRTT Wall frames to the base building power system. Locations of each feed source and plenum heights must be known and communicated to DIRTT, so an accurate bill of materials can be created.

• All electrical connections, modular or otherwise, are typically in the scope of the Electrical Contractor. The Electrical Contractor bears all responsibility for the final installed electrical system.

DATADIRTT provides a ¾” ID rigid conduit (EMT) to the top or bottom of the panel frame (feed direction) for data requirements. In some cases, due to the accessibility of the DIRTT Wall, the data cabling can be run through the DIRTT wall frames without the requirement of EMT (must be confirmed on a project by project basis). Where DIRTT Networks are specified the default solution will be a 1” x 2” rectangular aluminum wiring chase known as a DIRTT Networks Conduit. This wiring chase narrows to a 1¼” ID round coupler which enables preterminated cable ends to pass through.

If conventional boxes are specified on the project; the data vendor will be responsible to provide the necessary faceplates.

If modular boxes are specified on the project; please see chart for snap-in faceplates available. If the desired faceplate is not available, please specify a Decorator style faceplate and coordinate with the data vendor a Decorator style back strap with the appropriate jack termination.

All cabling and cabling related components are considered work performed “by others” (Data Contractor) with exception of the faceplates listed above for the modular box solution only.

SPLINES AND CUTOUTS• Ceiling Track Electrical Spline Plates with holes for electrical pass-through will ship with each project containing EMT. These

spline plates are to be located above all power/EMT locations where lines are to be run into the ceiling. There are small and large spine plates available (see Figure 8) which are allocated automatically in ICE based on electrical box size and demand.

• The optional factory cutouts on the frame verticals for power/data pass-through, are only included in the assembled frames if specified as such. Adjacent panels that do not contain electrical, but also require the power/data pass-through due to power route, must also be identified in ICE with an electrical pass-through requirement. Electrical feed location(s) should also be known to effectively plan power routing and pass-through requirement. One of the two cutouts will include a green Data Grommet (16944) to protect data cabling (see Figure 8).

General Notes1. Electrical can only be specified in Solid Wall or in Solid Wall segments of the Stack Wall.

2. Electrical duplex locations cannot be specified in the base or bottom horizontal of glass panels.

3. Electrical should not be located in face applied glass tiles.

4. It is the Installation Technicians responsibility to ensure the EMT (all levels) and electrical cables (Level 3& Level 4) are fed through the ceiling track and tile and/or the floor to allow access for connectivity tothe base building of our electrical components by the Electrical Contractor and cabling by the data vendor.

5. All DIRTT electrical components are UL/CSA approved (UL - USA/CSA – Canada).

6. DIRTT offers both 15 and 20 amp devices please ensure the proper device amperage has been specified.

7. Other project requirements such as split circuit, ground fault interrupter (GFI), OR Isolated Ground (IG) are also considered custom and must be coordinated and priced at the DIRTT head office or revert to a Level 1 or 2electrical solution.

8. Light Switches are only available from DIRTT in Level 1 or 2 solutions. Due to the many different types of lighting/requirements (incandescent, fluorescent, dimmers, 3-way switches, different wattages etc) we have opted to keep this simple. 347v conventional electrical boxes for lighting (Canada) are larger boxes and require larger cutouts; special instruction must be included in the order submission to ensure cutouts will fit around these boxes. When 347v convention-al boxes are specified, DIRTT will provide a ½" EMT in lieu of the standard ¾" EMT.If requested, DIRTT can install pulls strings, however they should not be necessary as our Level 2 standard offering includes ¾" rigid EMT and wires are easily pushed through. This would also come at a premium for materials and labor. Price must be generated by DIRTT Head Office.

9. Slight adjustments of electrical boxes may be necessary on-site to enable the relative tile to fit. Charge backs will not be accepted for electrical box adjustments for alignment with the tile cut-out.

10. All final connections to the base building are the responsibility of the Electrical Contractor including home runs and thus electrical permits and inspections are the responsibility of the Electrical Contractor.

11. Electrical can be field installed very easily; mounting hardware for electrical boxes can be suppliedby DIRTT if necessary, please contact DIRTT for relative pricing.

12. All electrical provisions must be coordinated through the project Architect and General Contractor.The general contractor is responsible for all sub-trades.

13. Any special electrical requirements for fire, safety or other wall mounted equipment or fixtures (alarms, strobes, pull stations, clocks, wall sconces, etc) must be investigated to determine an adequate solution from DIRTT.

14. Where possible, all electrical should be relocated to base building fixed walls or columns to maximize true flexibility of the movable walls.

15. Patient care projects generally require hospital grade wiring and hospital grade devices. Please unsure all patient care projects are reviewed thoroughly for electrical requirement and specified accordingly.

16. Final circuit plans should be reviewed by the Project Architect/Electrical Engineer at time of DIRTT shop drawing review (for all Level 3 & Level 4 electrical provisions), to ensure project electrical requirements are met, and to ensure DIRTT shop drawing information form part of the Construction Documents for the relative project.

17. If you are unsure which Level you should use on the project please contact the factory. Don’t make assumptions; ask questions.

18. Power devices are installed with the ground prong receptor down as a DIRTT Standard.

19. DIRTT will not accept any back charges for any electrical work necessary on site based on failure to coordinate applicable roles and responsibilities adequately with the installing technicians, the General Contractor and/or the Electrical Contractor.

20. Clean power requirements should be communicated clearly and specified accordingly.

21. Items not listed in ICE may still be available; however, they will be dealt with as a custom solution and specified in Catalogue Items within ICE, or may revert to a Level 1 or Level 2 DIRTT provision to accommodate a viable solution.

Power Options

Power Inside Inline Post (Monogamy)

DIRTT does offer an electrical solution where light switches or power MUST be located adjacent to a door frame in the office front, or in a glass elevation. The door frame itself is not large enough to chase power through or mount devices, hence if there is a power requirement for an office front with full-height glass panels specified we must introduce a post to house these components.

Our preferred option is to relocate the light switch or power requirement to the dividing wall at the end of the door in the open position rather than introduce a heavy element on an otherwise sleek front design, but if the project require-ments demand this solution, we will introduce a ‘Monogamy’ and locate the device in the post.

Light switches and power are Level 2 only. You can only offer a single gang box/device and you cannot specify back to back power/light switches; the heights must be offset due to the box depth; if specifying modular power you must also specify a narrow trim ring as the standard wider trim ring exceeds the post width. Due to spatial availability for conduit/flex runs there are maximum two boxes per post. (refer to the images below)

This is also how we deal with electric strikes; strike is mounted to an inline post next to the strike side jamb; wiring is run up or down the post to connect to the base building and Card reader supplied and installed “by others”.
