Overview: The new COMBISAFE® POWER

POST has proved a huge success following

its first trial application at a new laboratory

and office building in the Netherlands.

High rise construction specialists BAM

Utiliteitsbouw trialled the floor to ceiling

edge protection post in a new

1,200m2 mixed-use project for chemicals

group Lanxess at the 900 hectare Chemelot

industrial complex in Sittard-Geleen.

The company were impressed both with the

ease of use and the exceptional safety

standards offered by POWER POST, which

uses a unique compression unit to apply a

7.0kN force to floor and soffit surfaces.

latest architectural wonders, Dubai is often

referred to as the Architect’s playground

because it provides opportunities for noted

architects to show off their designs. But

building sites are not child’s play and in a

city where nearly a quarter of all the world’s

greater attention. On the 49 storey twin

mixed-use Towers, main contractor Arabian

Project: Raiffeisen Tower, Vienna

Contractor: STRABAG AG

Products: Safety Net Fan

Overview: Completed at the end of 2012,

the 78 metre high Raiffeisen Tower is

designed for maximum energy efficiency

throughout. For a building with such a high

benchmark for sustainability, it was vital that

safety standards attained a similar level.

The versatile COMBISAFE® Safety Net Fan

was chosen not only for its fall-arrest of up

to 100kg from up to 6 metres, but also

because, with interlaced 60mm and 20mm

netting, it is highly effective at preventing

even small pieces of debris falling to the

pavement below – crucial in such a

compact site alongside the Danube canal.

material falling to the street and to protect

pedestrians and cars parked next to the

also in place to protect the facade

elements of the buildings, which were

Project: The Shard of Glass, London

Contractor: Mace

Overview: Standing at 1017ft and with

potential wind speeds of up to 160 km/h,

safety was paramount during the

construction of Europe’s tallest building.

So COMBISAFE® took the innovative

approach of building temporary edge

protection into the steel detailing of the

building itself.

A triple guardrail was integrated into the

structural beams at ground level then

craned into place, reducing to an absolute

minimum the need for any work at height.

Once in position, the system could be

adapted to an enhanced height, close-

fitting, containment solution, without

restricting access to the edge.

Overview: The UBIX Temporary Roof system

provided protection to a 300m2 archaeological

dig at St Barts in London - England’s oldest

hospital. Lead contractor Skanska choose this

solution so archaeologists could work

unaffected by the weather, allowing vital

construction works to recommence soon as

possible. Two UBIX roofs measuring 12m x

12m and 14m x 12m were mounted on the

RUNWAY™ track system to cover the Ancient

Roman site, which dates back to AD 200. The

roof was assembled by three Skanska

operatives, aided by COMBSAFE installation

specialists, with no specialist tools needed.

Project: LGV Sud Europe Atlantique (LGV SEA)

Main Contractor: Vinci Construction

Overview: With safety paramount during the

construction of the 7.2 billion euro French

rail link between Tours and Bordeaux,

COMBISAFE offered a bespoke safety

solution to main contractor Vinci

Construction for one of the more than 185

bridges on this 340 km route.

In cutting the journey time from Paris to

Bordeaux to just two hours when the line

opens in 2016, the LGV Sud Europe

Atlantique (LGV SEA) route traverses a

significant number of rivers and roads.

Edge protection for a motorway crossing led

to COMBISAFE developing a special steel

jaw clamp attachment which enabled the

operatives to install Steel Mesh Barriers

across the bridge, protecting both the

workers and preventing debris from falling

onto the road below. COMBISAFE was the

only supplier who could meet the

contractor’s exacting requirements.

Comprehensive training in the assembly and use of our safety

SQUARE AND CIRCULAR SYSTEMS

COMBISAFE® operates in many markets across the world and recognises the need to develop posts

and attachments that integrate with existing structures. The Steel Mesh Barrier `Square’ system of

posts and attachments have been developed to include square posts and supporting attachments for

markets such as Germany and the Nordics while the `Circular’ system with circular posts and

attachments were developed for markets such as the UK and the Netherlands. If you are not sure which

STEEL MESH BARRIER STAIR

In terms of edge protection, staircases have traditionally presented a

significant safety challenge - previously, even providing basic safety

features generally necessitated the improvised cutting of tubes and

timber boards which themselves carried inherent safety issues.

Based on the trusted Steel Mesh Barrier system, the Steel Mesh

Barrier Stair provides an unrivalled systemised solution specifically

designed to work alongside Steel Mesh Barrier protected landings

for exceptional continuous edge protection.

NEW - POWER POST SYSTEMThe POWER POST is a system that allows you to install edge

protection from floor to soffit without the need for mechanical

anchors. With a height adjustment of up to 4.2 metres (when

using the extender) the friction only installation applies a force of

up to 7.0kN, providing EN 13374 compliant performance as well

as easy fitting and adjustment. The telescopic post, once

installed, can be used with a single level of Steel Mesh Barriers

or deliver full height containment.

MULTI MESH BARRIER SYSTEMThe Multi Mesh Barrier System incorporates barrier and post in one. The Multi Mesh Barrier

can also include an integrated locking mechanism allowing adequately protected workers to

open the barrier like a gate to access the edge. With a larger mesh than the Steel Mesh Barrier

it allows for work-through.

STEEL MESH BARRIER CONTAINMENT SOLUTIONS

Our containment systems comprise of selected COMBISAFE® components to provide enhanced

debris containment. Post extensions, adapters, soft nets and specially sized Steel Mesh Barrier

holders are combined with existing products to provide the required containment porosity.

Solutions can be bespoke, and include engineering calculations, wind loads, and installation

instructions.

NEW - COUNTERWEIGHT SYSTEMThe new Counterweight edge protection system from COMBISAFE

with its innovative weight handling trolley is a freestanding edge

protection solution for flat roof construction and renovation. Made of

galvanised steel with recycled rubber weights for maximum durability, it

provides protection to EN 13374 Class A while offering easy access to

the work surface.

NET BARRIER SYSTEMThe Net Barrier System offers a flexible edge protection solution to all manner of roof construction

and, when combined with internal safety netting, provides a secure envelope within which the

roofer can operate in complete safety. It will readily follow the curves of standing seam roofs,

accommodate extended curved canopies, steep valley gutters, long verge overhangs, and both

inboard and trim line gutters.

FAST FRAME™ SYSTEMDesigned for fast and simple installation using no

specialist tools, the FAST FRAME system is a bespoke

solution for the steel frame industry. Slotting into

pre-welded sockets on the perimeter beams it creates

an integral triple guardrail. Fully adjustable

for slabs of any thickness, and easily enhanced with

a Debris Mesh Barrier for greater containment, the

FAST FRAME system represents an exciting

innovation in temporary edge protection safety.

is meant by Containment, and to clarify the

conflicting demands and variables included

COMBISAFE Containment Standard is

THE STEEL MESH BARRIER CONTAINMENT

SOLUTION uses existing Steel Mesh Barrier

components to cover the containment area.

Post extensions, adapters, and specially sized

Steel Mesh Barrier Holders are combined

with existing products to provide a certain

containment porosity. Solutions are bespoke,

and include technical drawings, wind loads,

and installation instructions. Turn to page 28

for details of the Steel Mesh Barriers.

THE SOFT NET SOLUTION uses a safety net

with a chosen mesh size to provide the

required containment porosity. This is normally

fitted to the soffit by remote attachment, and

either joins with the existing edge protection

solution, or extends to the working surface.

THE MULTI MESH BARRIER CONTAINMENT

SOLUTION uses the Multi Mesh Barrier

System components to cover the containment

area. Additional spigots and screw jacks may

be required, and the containment area is

covered in vertical units of 1150mm. In view of

the large mesh size of the Multi Mesh Barrier,

the solution starts at the 250mm containment

porosity. If applications require an decreased

porosity, overlay materials can be used. Turn to

page 55 for details of the Multi Mesh Barriers.

The Net Barrier System has been rigorously

tested to confirm its performance envelope,

application limits, and its compliance with the

European Standard. Full performance

information is available within the user

instructions and on the training courses.

100mm Mesh Safety Nets compliant to

EN 1263-1 are used as standard. The system

is designed to accommodate extreme wind

loads, and the combined working and wind

loads required within the standard.

The Safety Net Fan catches and securely

SITE STAIRWAY DESCRIPTION

The Stairways are quickly and easily installed on-site, straight off the back

of the transport, and are ready for use in minutes.

Set up between 25° and 50°, users can carry

small tools, equipment and materials in safety

and comfort.

They can be set up on table forms, between

floors in buildings, in service ducts, around the

perimeter, or elsewhere, and can protect the

building’s permanent stairs from the wear and

tear of the construction process.

They fully comply with EN 12811, as

can be joined and supported to offer a

single run climb height of up to 7.5m

top section of the scale (from 3 - 36) and

follow the curve until it intercepts with the

rise height line you have drawn, to give

inclination required (24 steps = 38º)

4. Using a straight line, track down to the

Reach Length from building (5.3m as shown

on the ‘x’ axis)

INCLINATION DIAGRAM

The inclination diagram is used for selecting the Stairway length.Recommended inclination range is 25° – 50° (30° minimum for compliance with EN12811)

An example is shown in the diagram with dotted lines and should be interpreted as follows:


• Whatever the angle of the Stairway,

the treads will always be horizontal

• The locking mechanism ensures the

stability of the Stairway and keeps it at

the correct angle

• The bottom of the stringers are shaped

to prevent slipping

• Being over 750mm wide, the Stairway

permits occasional passing if required

• Can be folded flat for ease of transport

• The Stairway is manufactured in steel

sections and has a durable galvanised

finish as standard

• The treads have a coarse expanded metal

surface for grip, which also clears muddy

footwear in use

PLATFORM SOLUTION FOR DIFFICULT TO ACCESS STRUCTURES

The COMBISAFE® Hanging Platform offers a modular, quickly installed,

working platform system, that can be fixed around the outer perimeter of

structures, allowing high level access without the need to restrict the area

below by building a scaffold for example.

This light weight system comprises a

console, which is suspended or attached to

the structure using a range of supports, into

which a boardwalk is fixed to create a

walkway. The consoles also support Safety

Posts and Barriers from the edge protection

system on the outside of the walkway.

The system has a wide range of support

options, to accommodate all manner of

different structures. The light weight,

relatively small components also make the

system suitable for installation in difficult

access areas, like bridges and viaducts. The

heaviest single item only weighs 25kg.

Flexible Solution

The COMBISAFE® Hanging Platform system is often used in places where a floor mounted scaffold

would restrict other activities, or would be too expensive. As it is installed at a high level it limits

unauthorised access and therefore offers improved building security.

The system has great flexibility to fit many building shapes. The overlapping boardwalk allows

easy adjustment of the support centres with no step or trip at the joint. There are corners, and even

self-closing gates to control the point of access. The Boardwalk has an integral toeboard, and there

is a screw-in stop-end to complete the protection.

The maximum load permissable on the walkway is 200kg/m2, and the maximum span between

consoles is 2.4m. There is a Cantilever Platform system for direct attachment to slab edges.

This is used to provide local passage around wall forms etc.

are possible by joining various modular lengths. Beams are connected to scaffold

Protected by Design Registration 4011691 and Patent Application 0911448.9, STORMSTOPPER uses additional keder flaps

welded to the roof sheets, which completely seal the sheeting track when joined over the top by the STORMSTOPPER profile.

This uPVC plastic profile is pushed into place from the eaves and is flexible enough to follow the curvature of ridge or eaves beams.

UBIX® TEMPORARY ROOFING - TENSION BAR

The UBIX Tension Bar is a structural addition to the standard roof which

links from side-to-side with a series of pre-fabricated high tensile steel

tubes, joined with standard UBIX beam spigots. The UBIX Tension Bar

eliminates the need to make ad-hoc solutions using standard tube-and-

fittings and eliminates excessive erection work, saving on labour cost.

UBIX® RUNWAY™ SYSTEM

SAFE ASSEMBLY AND DEPLOYMENT FOR TEMPORARY ROOFS

A complete system of tracks,

wheels and roof supports

offering permanent anti-uplift

protection.

RUNWAY enables temporary roofs to be

erected in complete safety using the roll-out

method. By mounting the temporary roof on

the RUNWAY system, all erection work can

be carried out from safe working platforms

at a gable end, from which fully-assembled

roof bays are rolled out easily into position

along the track. Opening roofs for craning

through materials also becomes much safer

and easier using RUNWAY.


• Eliminates the need to work at height as

temporary roof is erected from a working

platform at the gable end.

• Built-in anti-lift feature allows safe

movement even in windy weather

• Simple locking screws firmly secure the

castors to the track when movement is not

A ‘step-up’ unit, designed to give scaffolders safe and swift access to poles and joints above

normal reach.

PREGUARD™

An advanced guardrail system, that enables scaffolders to install edge protection on the lift above

prior to work on the next level.

Aluminum Beams

COMBISAFE® stocks a wide range of aluminium unit beams for incorporation within any type of

scaffolding. Large spans are possible using in-line spigot joints.

The SCAFFSTEP is a light weight

step device, enabling a scaffolder to

erect or dismantle guardrails on the

lift above, whilst protected by that

lift’s ledger. The SCAFFSTEP is

clipped onto the working level top

guardrail at any position, and its

adjustable feet bear on the boards.

The integral ladder provides access to the

platform, use a retractable lanyard to provide

protection whilst accessing it. Once standing on

the SCAFFSTEP, the scaffolder is protected from falling out of the scaffold by the ledger of the lift

above, now acting as his single guardrail. He can then reach up in perfect safety and either attach, or

release the guardrails to the lift above, which are now within reach. The SCAFFSTEP can be used

with traditional tube and fitting scaffolding, and also with many types of system scaffold using tubular

ledgers. The adjustable feet accommodate various guardrail heights and keep the platform level.
