ENERGY CRISIS
Renewable energies vs. Fossil fuelsAlternative energy sourcesInternational energy dependence
Aqualia treats annually 500 000 000 m3 of urban wastewater
Electric consumption associated: 0,5 kWhel /m3 = 250 M kWh = 25 M €
The energy content of urban WW is typically ~2 kWhth/m3
Situation in Spain:
WWTPs >1 % national energy consumption
High sludge management costs 8-20 €/TonTon
Difficulties to meet regulation 91/Ton271/TonCEE: N & P
Need of water reuse RD 1620/Ton2007(specially in stressed areas)

LIFE MEMORY (MEMBRANE FOR ENERGY AND WATER RECOVERY) PROJECT
RESULTSFrom an environmental, economic and social point of view,
AnMBR for urban wastewater treatment is a promising
technology:- Suitable COD removal
- Methane production: recovering methane from effluent is a
crucial step for the favorable energy balance of the process
- High methane concentration: possibility for biomethane
production, to be used as automotive biofuel
- Low biosolids production can be achieved (up to 4 times lower
than aerobic processes )
- High quality treated water is obtained, which is rich-nutrient
water Identify value of nutrient rich irrigation reuse
- Low footprint
