Tel: 01485 601278 Cabaret Night Saturday 11 th May was the latest very enjoyable Cabaret. Top of the bill was Jody Kruskal from the USA who is currently touring the UK. Jody regaled and amused us with a selection of songs accompanied by his very clever concertina playing. He skilfully involved the audience singing along to choruses or providing a rhythmic background tapping empty glasses on the table. Phil Lascelles opened the evening at 8.00pm prompt with a set of songs and jokes delivered in his inimitable style which had the room in stitches of laughter. So, we got off to a grand start. He was followed by Vanessa Wood- Davies who played some lovely solos on her harp. She has welsh gypsy ancestry and her grandfather was a well known harpist. She played several gypsy tunes and some of her own composition. The third act was Chris Dodson from Haddenham near Ely. His chosen instrument is the ukulele-banjo. He sang a set of songs, some romantic and some, more amusing, in the style of George Formby. After Chris we had a 30 minute break which allows for a jolly good gossip and time for empty glasses to be relled. At this point the rafe is drawn and the lucky ones choose their prizes. Warm nibbles were also served at this time, as usual. The fourth act was a duo called “Birdsong”. Kevin on guitar and Bernadette on ddle played a selection of very enjoyable tunes and songs including a couple written by Kevin. Jody Kruskal’s very professional performance nished the evening and the compere (Neil Steed) closed the show at 11.00pm. The Cabaret is monthly in the Community Centre. In all, it’s very good value for only £2.00 per ticket. It is necessary to reserve a ticket as we need to control the numbers to comply with the Fire Ofcer’s limits on the room and to know how many seats we need. Why not come along and see for yourself. Next month the featured guest is Terence Blacker (songwriter). After that we have a summer break and will start again in September. LADIES NIGHT Due to considerably reduced numbers at our meetings it has been decided to cancel the summer dates - June, July and August and to resume meetings in September 2019. If you are keen that Ladies Nights should continue as of September please let me know by the end of August at the latest. Thank you to all who have supported the group during the past, we have had some excellent evenings and some fun events. Patsy Flitcham School Dear Villagers and Flitcham Village, Our Tesco's funded community and school quiet garden is nearly nished and we would love to invite you to see it. We will be having an opening ceremony on Friday 7th June at 9.45am , weather permitting, please come along and see the children's work and have a sit in our lovely garden. Tea and cakes provided. We look forward to welcoming you into school. Mrs Gardener GOOD COMPANIONS Our April meeting speaker was Lisa Auker, a community banker for NatWest, who talked about scams. She gave descriptions of scams that are phone, letter, email or personal communications that try to con you out of money and not all of them are illegal. She reminded everybody to be on their guard, not to make rush decisions, give out personal details, ID or passwords to anyone if they are not checked out rst. Apparently almost three-quarters of people in the UK have been targeted by scammers in the last two years and over half of them have not talked to anybody about it. She advised not to be embarrassed to speak to family and friends about this and get advice if you are unsure about any offer. Scammers generally seem kind, talkative and friendly but mislead and lie and If something sounds too good to be true it usually is. The Gardening Year: June

As we move into June and towards thelongest day, the extra daylight andwarmer days will urge flowers intobloom. It is a busy month and jobsinclude:

It’s time to hang Hanging upplanted baskets, putting out containersand bulking up the borders with annualbedding plants without fear of nighttime frosts. Petunias, pelargoniums, lobelia and salvias are all traditionalfavourites, but there are others to try.Trailing antirrhinums, pansies anddiascia all look good in a basket, andfragrant nemesia and heliotrope willlook and smell wonderful in a summercontainer. The weeds will also respond tothe warmer weather, so continue to hoeout the annuals, and dig out persistentperennials. A thick mulch will preventannual weeds from germinating. As tomatoes grow, pinch outthe side shoots to promote uprightgrowth. Harvest quick growing saladcrops and unearth early potatoes. Cut back late spring floweringrockery plants such as Aubrietia, Iberisand Arabis, and prune early floweringshrubs such as Forsythia when they allfinish flowering. As the weather gets drier, plants will need irrigating, especiallythose in containers. Watering early inthe morning and early evening willreduce evaporation and make the mostof your water. It is best to water beforethe soil or compost dries outcompletely. Make sure that plants arewatered well, as too little water willencourage roots up to the surface.Seep hoses are an effective way ofgetting water directly to the roots ofplants, and can be hidden beneath thesoil or mulch. And please remember to leavesome water out for the birds!
