This is part of a whole litany of praises to life in Lincolnshire we often take for granted, this month as we continue into the harvest season through a summer of extraordinary weather the ‘gathering in’ has extended on and on. So as we con-tinue our thanksgiving I want to thank Peter and Pauline Lister whose creative thoughts and prayers brought this Benedicite (Psalm) into being more than ten years ago, and which I have used in various forms of worship, often since. From a Caythorpe perspective, I want to thank those who through the shock of having St Vincent’s church closed very suddenly in September, just days after the annual Arnhem weekend, who have managed to support and maintain our services thus far. Taking our church and all that is in it for granted has registered with me, just how people losing their homes to floods and such like must feel. How we long to be back ‘home’.

Bishop's letter for Parish Magazines: October 2012 The great sporting summer of 2012 continues to amaze. The stupendous success of the Olympic Games being followed by a different, but just as successful, experience – the Paralympic Games. These two beautifully organised sporting festivals have not only showcased London and Britain, but also reminded us of several important ideas. The first is that there is nothing wrong in taking in a pride in our British-ness. In recent decades – in part because of the experience of Fascism in the 1930s and 1940s – we have been cautious about celebrating our na-tional qualities too overtly. We wanted our nation to do well – particularly as the proud hosts – and were thrilled when medals were won and Olym-pics records broken. Natural human loyalties and communities are given to us as schools for love, as places where we can learn to broaden and deepen our love for the wider world and for God, by learning to love others, some of whom may be very different from ourselves. So it is no bad thing to be proud of the achievements of our nation as long as it leads to broadly human sympa-thies and is not diminished by unhealthy jingoism. And this brings me to my second idea: that we should not dominated by an idea of perfection against which we measure everything else. We live in a diverse universe with many complementary expressions of life. This is demonstrated so powerfully by the athletes of the Paralympic Games, and challenges those who are conventionally able to see those with injuries and disabilities not in negative terms, but as fellow human beings with a different set of abilities. We may then be able to view the human race as family of people of differing (and ideally complementary) backgrounds, ethnicities and abilities all of which can be focussed towards the Common Good. I am proud to be British not only because of the achievements of our ath-letes – but also because we are becoming a nation which values all its peoples whoever they are and expects everyone to contribute to the bene-fit of all.

THE GREEN THING

Checking out at Tesco, the young cashier suggested to the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologised and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my ear-lier days." The assistant responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations." She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day. Back then, we re-turned milk bottles, soft drink bottles and beer bottles to the shop. The shop sent them back to the plant to be washed, sterilised and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day. We walked up stairs because we didn't have a lift or escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocers and didn't climb into a 200-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day. Back then, we washed the baby's nappies because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 2000 watts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back then. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right. We didn't have the green thing back in our day. Back then, we had one TV or radio in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief not a screen the size of Yorkshire. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the post, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn petrol just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right. We didn't have the green thing back then. When we were thirsty we drank from a tap instead of drinking from a plastic bottle of water shipped from the other side of the world. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor when the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then. Back then, people took the bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical socket in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a comput-erized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest fish and chip shop. But isn't it sad that the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just

because we didn't have the green thing back then?

Emily Ashcroft, aged 13 The Sir William Robertson High School Everyone is good at something, whether they know it or not. I only found out what I was good at three years ago. My sister is very creative, my brother is very good at bike riding and I am really good at athletics. Everyone hates it, but I love it! My name is Emily and I am the best in my class. When I grow up, I want to be an Olympic athlete in Long jump, 200 metres, 100 metres and javelin. But there is only one problem. I have had to put my athletics aside as my grandma is ill with cancer and is battling for life. She is lying 24:7 in a hospital bed at home in the living room. I just wish everything would be back the way it was, but I know it probably won’t go the way I want it to, not this time. You see, my grandma was the one who got me into athletics. If it wasn’t for her, then I don’t know what I would have done. She got me going when I was ten and she gave me all the basics, and started me off at a club. I now compete in track and field events and cross country for my club. But now that grandma is ill, I am getting bad tempered, and if she has to go, then who will keep me on track? Who will support me? What will I do? The answer is I just don’t know. At the minute, I am training for a major track and field league. It is a young ath-letes’ league which if your jump/time is in the top five, then you are selected to represent your county in that event. My county is Lincolnshire – we were doing so well until grandma had back pains and everything has all happened so fast she has now ended up like this. I have only three more weeks to train. Who will I train with now? The next day we go up to grandma’s. Grandma has got worse. The oxygen supply hasn’t come and everything is going downhill at the moment. Over the next few days, grandma is struggling. I don’t know how long we even have left. That night was the worst night of my entire life! I was soundly asleep upstairs in the spare room, when I heard mum’s voice. “Emily wake up, I need you to come to grandma,” I open my sleepy eyes and see mum. “Grandma’s breathing is stopping.” I walk sleepily down the stairs and into the front room. Everyone is stood around the bed. I walk up to her and hold her bony hand – when everyone was out the room, I whisper into grandma’s ear “I love you and I always will and thank you for everything you’ve done for me, “I give her a kiss and wipe away my tears. Now her breathing has stopped. Her heart has stopped beating. She has gone. We managed to get grandma’s make up on her and fresh clothes on her. We got her body out of the house safely and silently. I need to train extra hard now. I am going to run like I have never run before. I will do it for grandma. Today is the morning of the big race. I am shaking with nerves. I get my kit on

Carton-Le-Moorland and District Art Group The ANNUAL CARLTON-LE-MOORLAND AND DISTRICT ART GROUP EXHIBI-TION is being held in The Carlton-le-Moorland Village Hall on Saturday 6th October and Sunday 7th October. The Exhibition is open each day from 11.00am to 5.00 pm. Entry is still only 50p (including catalogue) and refreshment are available. Later in the month on the morning of Thursday 18th October at 10.15am there will be an oil painting demonstration by Peter Baker entitled “Autumn River Scene”. The demon-stration will be held in the Carlton-le-Moorland village hall and will last approximately two hours and include a short break for coffee etc. The Hall will be open at 10.00am and visitors are always welcome. CAYTHORPE & FRIESTON SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB. October sees the return of our ever-popular Quiz nights, with this month’s quiz taking place on Saturday, 27th October and with the chilling theme of... Halloween. Scary, but the darker nights are already drawing in! The Bar at the Hammond Pavilion opens at 7:45 with the quiz beginning at 8:30pm for teams of up to 6 members and guests with entries costing a mere £2 per person and prizes aplenty. Look forward to seeing you there...... We would also like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that we will be hosting the annual Caythorpe & Frieston fireworks display again this year, at the Playing Field, with over £1,000 of the very best bangs, flashes, cascades and Catherine wheels around. As ever, the event will be free to all-comers (other than the usual opportunities to donate towards our costs!). The fireworks display will be held on Saturday, 3rd November this year, with a 6:30pm opening and the main event scheduled to begin at 7:30pm. Reminders will be posted around both villages closer to the date. The Sports & Social Club opens for Members and Guests from 8pm on Thursday and Friday evenings and from 12 on Sunday lunchtime, as well as being available for events. and twenty minutes before my race, I put my spikes on and wonder down to the start line of the 200 metres and warm up. I do some ankle rolls, high knees, high skips, lunges, strides and more. Suddenly, they call the under 15 girls over and give us a lane. I got lane 4 (a good lane) now it’s time. I get into my lane and there are so many tall girls. I can hear the starter saying “On your marks,” so I get into the Sprint start position. “Set!”, “Go” I sprint off and run as fast as I can. I am coming in third place and as I get closer to the line, my heart is beating fast, I dip and go into second place with a time of 16 seconds. I have done it! I have won a place to run for my county in 200 meters! I am so happy; I bet I have done grandma proud! As I walk back to the tent I find a white feather on my bag. I pick it up and know it’s from grandma!

All the events, reunions and Gala day to mark Arnhem weekend were well attended and enjoyed by all in glorious sunshine. Such memories of what Caythorpe and the surround-ing villages and hamlets did when local families provided billets for the many brave ser-vicemen prior to their departing on the special operation “Market Garden” into northern Europe. Few returned, it is only right that we continue to remember so many who gave their lives for our today. Above all the highlight was the dedication of the new window in the church which is now a fitting memorial to recent campaigns also bravely under-taken by all the services. As predicted the march of the wind turbine planning applications continues to pick up momentum. Recent information confirms there are already two sites operating, two ap-plications in the planning system, six possible future sites for as many as seventeen struc-tures and three schemes where the planning appeal was refused or the scheme with-drawn. All this within an approximate five mile radius to the west of views from Cay-thorpe down across the Trent Plain. A public exhibition will be held by the Developer for the Temple Hill site close to the villages of Brandon & Stubton on Friday 28th (4pm- 7pm) Saturday 29th September (10am-4pm) at Stubton village hall, Fenton Road, Stub-ton, NG23 5DB. This promises to be very informative and there will be persons present to answer your questions from either perspective For all of those who have not registered for improving the Broadband speed in our area please simply visit www.onlincolnshire.org and register, the greater number who regis-ter the more quickly we will benefit when the scheme is implemented. Currently the Ful-beck exchange Loveden (01400 Nos) has only 10.2% of its 1500 eligible premises regis-tered. Surely collectively we can do better than that, throughout Lincolnshire we are competing with another 125 exchanges! yes we need to up the simple act of registering to get a heads start on all other exchanges in Lincolnshire. The good news that we are currently 11th in the table but we do need to push on, so please encourage everyone to take part. Please be aware that in the event of any anti-social behaviour , nuisance, making de-mands or unkempt property, complaints can be made direct to SKDC on 0800 1830279 (selecting Option 1, followed by 1, OR by e-mail to [email protected] OR contact myself on 01400 273873. By way of warning Civil Parking Enforcement by the County Council will commence in Grantham from December 3rd 2012, also SKDC will be enforcing parking violations within its car parks from the same date. Depending on the nature of the parking contra-vention Penalty Charge notices are either £70 or £50. This will be reduced by 50% if paid within 14 days. Finally the present Council Tax Benefit Scheme is to be replaced by a Localised Council Tax Support Scheme in April 2013 administered by SKDC. CAYTHORPE & FRIESTON PLAYING FIELD. Many thanks to all who helped to organise, and who attended in numbers, the Caythorpe Gala on the 8th of September. Alongside a number of other complimentary events held around the village as part of our Arnhem celebrations, and with 216 Squadron along in force we had the best weather possible in which to enjoy a wonderful late summer afternoon. Highlights included a thriller of a football match between Caythorpe & 216 Squadron, with a narrow 5-4 victory being recorded by the Paras, Funds raised by this event and a number of others held over the course of each year are vital in helping to cover the costs of maintaining our Playing Field, and it is perhaps worth reflecting for a moment on what the facilities we have here in Caythorpe and Frieston represent and how we can help more to keep and im-prove them. Key Facts: The field, the play area, and clubhouse and changing rooms, cost around £13,000 each year to repair and maintain. Of this, £2,000 is provided directly by our Parish Council (represents approx. £1.67 per year for each house-hold in the village – far less than a bus ticket or a gallon of petrol! ). The re-mainder of our operating costs are covered through fundraising and the efforts of a small group of volunteers who give of their time and skills both to keep costs low and to raise the funds necessary to support the operation of the field. Our message is a simple one. We have a wonderful Playing Field and the facili-ties that we have built as a community are the envy of many and a key part of what makes our villages such a great place to live – Let’s get involved and keep it that way. Forthcoming events: The next major event taking place at the field will be the annual Caythorpe Chase (sorry Frieston – it doesn’t scan any other way!). The Chase is a 13/26 mile bike ride, starting and finishing at the Playing Field, which will take place on Sunday, 14th October. Whether you are an active participant or an avid supporter (Olympic fever still wearing off?) we look forward to seeing you there. Entry forms and further details of the chase are available in the Sports & Social Club and also on the Caythorpe web site http://www.caythorpe.org/ There will also be opportunities for you to get involved in running the event ....

The Caythorpe Indoor Short Mat Bowls Club The Caythorpe Indoor Short Mat Bowls Club will be meeting every Tuesday 2pm.-4pm. in the village hall. In addition, there is the possibility of regular evening sessions, should there be sufficient interest. Come along and join this friendly and sociable group. Everyone welcome. SEEN IN THE GARDEN After this last ‘summer’ Sept has been on the whole very enjoyable and until this last week the garden has been a joy to behold. For this I thank the two who have worked so hard in it. One in particular believes in COMPOST and plenty of it. She is quite right for plants that I have had for many years and thought had done well have filled the beds with foliage and blossom more abundant and higher than I have ever seen them. There is even a clematis flowering about 15ft up holding on to the magnolia. An attractive autumn plant with lovely sprays of white flowers, a Cimicifuga is standing 6ft high in the front garden and very no-ticeable as you walk past. The pelargoniums we wintered in the greenhouse are in bloom along with a new Geranium, ‘Roxanne’. It is a lovely blue one but also spreads well providing good ground cover. The blue is of a delicate colour and blends in well with other plants and provides an attractive contrast to the sur-rounding plants.. I do not know how many of you managed to count butterflies. Oddly, the day after I had submitted last months copy to the Editor, we had a lovely warm sunny day and I counted on the white Buddleia about 8 Red Admirals and Peacocks. On another day, Mary saw a lot more but found it difficult to count. I was so thankful because one wondered where they had all gone. The Butterfly Conser-vation group report that Red Admirals are down by 72%! I have seen one small Tortoise but oddly no Comma butterflies. I miss the days when the Buddleias and Sedums were covered with them. Let us hope we have a better year next year and give them a chance to recover. One realises the increasing importance of gardens, not necessarily beautifully kept but with plenty of foliage and a bit wild in places and where birds and ani-mals like Hedgehogs can find shelter for the winter. They are such important habitats for wildlife when highly cultivated land and pesticides diminish their environment elsewhere. The other day we counted 10 Greenfinches on one feeder alone, not to mention sparrows, a Great Tit, Blue and Cole Tits and a host of Dunnocks on the ground feeding off what the others had dropped. No wonder it is getting quite costly keeping them fed! An example of this is the fact that Goldfinches have only recently been considered a garden bird for their home previously were hedgerows and coppices. Best wishes for now Alasdair F-D

Caythorpe & District WI – September The time raced by when former Radio Lincolnshire presenter Dave Bussey re-gailed us with tales of his time on the airwaves. So much so that he will have to visit us again to tell us about his life beneath the waves on Polaris submarines. He was thanked by Ann Ashcroft. Standing in for president Sue Case, Robina Heald thanked everyone for support-ing the WI at the village Gala, particularly Linda and Caroline, for their efforts raising funds for the Playing Field. The competition for a Lincolnshire recipe was won by Mavis Coxon,2nd Linda Appleyard , 3rd Kath Metheringham. Flower of the month was won by Ann Ashcroft, 2nd Mavis Coxon, 3rd Joan Coppin. The October meeting is a hands-on craft evening with a competition for a flower arrangement in a wine glass. In November we will be country dancing. Husbands, partners and invited guests will be not only welcomed but needed to make the evening a success. So get them recruited now! The reward will be a jacket potato and fillings supper. Next year is the Institute’s 60th anniversary so we urgently need memories or funny incidents either from the WI or village life over the past half century for a commemorative book. We meet every second Thursday of the month in Caythorpe village hall at 7.30p.m. Guests and visitors are most welcome to join us.

Parish Council News……October 2012. Personal achievement……It was noted that Cllr Neil Fritzsche had been awarded the Queens Fire Service Medal in the recent honours list. Neil has also just won a Special Recognition Award on the BBC 999 Awards programme which was screened in mid August. The award was made for going beyond the call of duty in exceptional circumstances as Neil has been instrumental in setting up both the Lincolnshire Urban Search and Rescue Team and the UK Interna-tional Search and Rescue Team helping save lives both at home and abroad. Neil is to be congratulated on receiving these two prestigious awards. Housing….Meetings have taken place recently with both Lincs Rural Housing Association and SKDC as they are the two key providers of social/affordable housing within the parish. The meeting with SKDC was attended by District Cllr Bob Sampson and Cllrs Dix and Nelson from this parish council and ranged across a number of areas of concern and is the start of a more regular and formal dialogue. In the event that there are issues with regard to complaints of nuisance, anti-social behaviour and untidy gardens SKDC can be contacted on 0800 1830279 (selecting option 1 followed by 1 in order to speak to the correct depart-ment) or by email at [email protected] or contact District Cllr Bob Sampson on 01400 273873. The issue of housing was seen as a key priority in the Parish Plan and will continue to remain so for the time being. Arnhem weekend…A very large thank you to every one who was involved in organising and running all of the activities and events that took place over the weekend. The amount of time spent planning and organising before hand is often over looked but it is essential in helping ensure that everything runs smoothly.
