Greetings and Foreword

WELCOME TO KOBE!!On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I would like to conveythe symposium’s deepest sympathy

to the researchers in Japan for the tragedy that has been caused as a result of the recent earthquakeand tsunami. We sincerely welcome all of you to Kobe and to the2011 International Symposium onNonlinear Theory and its Applications (NOLTA2011). This isthe 21st NOLTA Symposium organizedby the Research Society of Nonlinear Theory and its Applications, IEICE, and more recently, sponsoredby the Circuits and Systems Society, IEEE. Since its foundation, NOLTA has been held in Japan, USA,Switzerland, Germany, China, Belgium, Italy, Canada, Hungary and Poland. It is my great honor andprivilege to organize the NOLTA2011 in Kobe, Japan.

Kobe basks in various attractive sightseeing resources such as natural environments with the surround-ing Rokko Mountains and the Seto Inland Sea. Kobe is also considered one of Japan’s most attractivecities. Many foreigners have lived in Kobe, and the city preserves many historic foreigners’ residences. The city is proud of its multidimensional excellence including high level of manufacturing skills, well-developed urban infrastructure and more importantly, the ties among people established through therestoration from the 1995 Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.

The most important aspect of NOLTA is its technical program. From this point of view, we are verypleased to see that we attracted a very high number of paper submissions. I would like to thank theTechnical Program Co-Chairs, Prof. Tetsushi Ueta (Tokushima University) and Prof. C. K. Tse (HongKong Polytech. University), who put together a rich in content and high-quality technical programspanning three days of 4 or 5 lecture sessions running in parallel and covering all subjects of interest inthe field of nonlinear Science and Engineering. Thanks to theefforts of our Special Sessions Co-Chairs,Prof. Yoshifumi Nishio (Tokushima University), Prof. W. K.S. Tang (City University of Hong Kong)and Dr. Visarath In (Spawar Systems Center, San Diego) for selecting and organizing such valuablespecial sessions. Special thanks go out to the Technical Program Committee Members and reviewersfor their dedicated service. I would also like to thank the keynote speakers and session co-chairs fortheir fine contributions to the technical program. Finally,I would like to express my sincere thanks toProf. Takashi Hisakado (Kyoto University) and Prof. Hiroyuki Torikai (Osaka University) and all theSymposium Committee members of NOLTA 2011. We do hope your stay in Kobe will be memorablethrough fruitful scientific discussions and delicious foods in comfortable atmosphere.

Technical Program Co-Chair’s Message

First of all, we would like to express our gratitude to all participants and authorsof NOLTA 2011. In addition to what is usually presented in previous TechnicalProgram Chair’s messages, we would like to address the special features and trendsof this year’s program.

• A total of 191 papers have been received, and 182 papers have been includedfor presentation in the technical program.

• A total of 47 oral sessions are scheduled for presentation ofthe 182 acceptedpapers. The technical program is also highlighted by 3 plenary sessions.

• As a NOLTA tradition, a number of special sessions are organized by leadingresearchers who have put together papers reporting latest advances in theirown fields and facilitated opportunities for fostering collaboration among peerresearchers. We would like to offer our appreciation to these special sessionproposers and their participating authors.

• Submissions for regular sessions have only accounted for one third of all sub-missions, despite our special effort in encouraging early-bird submissions be-fore the deadline.

• Among the 191 submissions, over 80 percent are from Asia. We deeply ap-preciate the support of Asian researchers who have faithfully planned and nowrealize their visit to Kobe despite the general concerns of the possible impacton our environment as a result of the natural disaster that occurred earlier inthe year.

Finally we wish to thank all members of our Technical ProgramCommittee and alldedicated reviewers for their professional support and contributions that have beenpivotal to the successful production of such a high-qualitytechnical program forNOLTA 2011.
