The cap that is used to purge the cooling system will safely purge the air that is trapped in a pressurizedcooling system. This is done by lifting the lever on the cap rather than removing a pressurized cap. The capwill eliminate the potential hazards of hot pressurized coolant that can escape from the cooling system. Also,

the cap will successfully purge trapped air.

    Procedure

    1. Remove cooling system pressure cap.

    2. Top off the heat exchanger with the proper type of coolant.

Note: If the proper type of coolant is not used, gelling of the coolant can occur.

Pressurized system! Hot coolant can cause serious burns, injury ordeath. To open the cooling system filler cap, stop the engine and waituntil the cooling system components are cool. Loosen the cooling systempressure cap slowly in order to relieve the pressure. Read and

understand the Operation and Maintenance Manual before performingany cooling system maintenance.

    3. Check the fluid level in the overflow tank. The coolant level must be at the add fill mark for theaddition of coolant.

    4. Install the Stant cap that is used to purge the cooling system with the lock lever in the raised positionin the place of the pressurized cap that is installed at the factory.

    5. Start the engine. While the engine is coming up to operating temperature, open the purge valve that ison top of all the turbochargers in order to purge the coolant. Leave the valve open until a steady trickleof coolant can be seen. When a trickle of coolant can be seen, close the purge valve.

    6. Run the engine until the engine reaches normal operating temperature and the thermostat opens. Thismay require putting the engine under a 30 percent to 40 percent load to achieve at least 79 C (175 F).

Note: An overheat condition can occur when the engine is run at a continuous heavy load with the capthat is used to purge the cooling system in place and the lever in the UP position.

    7. Monitor the overflow tank. The level of the coolant will rise. Air bubbles that are being purged will bepresent in the overflow tank when the thermostat opens.

    8. Continue to run the engine until no bubbles are observed. A decrease in the coolant level in the

overflow tank may be noticed on some systems. This is a normal condition and the coolant level mustbe allowed to drop until the coolant level stabilizes.

    9. Bring the engine back to an idle condition and bring the engine to a stopped condition.

    10. Remove the cap that was installed in Step 4. The cap that is used to purge the cooling system will notbe pressurized.

Note: The cooling system is not pressurized, but the coolant in the heat exchanger and the overflowtank can still cause serious burns, injury, or death.

    11. Top off the heat exchanger and completely fill the overflow tank to the cold full mark.

    12. If a low coolant level alarm occurs, back out the coolant level sensor until coolant drains out. Thenreinstall the sensor and tighten the sensor.

    a. If the low coolant level alarm continues, refer to the Troubleshooting section in the ServiceInformation System (SIS).

    13. Install original cooling system pressure cap.

    14. Allow the engine to cool and recheck the coolant level. If an adjustment is needed, adjust the coolantlevel in both the heat exchanger and the overflow tank.
