Back castSome of the major opportunities that lie ahead for the marinesector in Ireland include:

Exploiting growing international markets for seafood products, es-pecially health foods;Exploiting new niche global markets in marine environmental tech-nologies; Developing new tourism offerings in angling, boating andwater sports that provide exciting experiences in a quality marineenvironment;Source t he Mar ine Inst i t ute

The angling tourism sector is now particularly vulnerable and is atrisk of loosing a huge part of that marine opportunity and the cur-rent benefit to the economy and existing jobs. The latest FIF pro-posal to re-open commercial bass fishing in this country is withoutdoubt the greatest single challenge that angling tourism has facedfor many years.

The challenge it faces is one that presents itself in a faade ofpseudo responsibility and job creation whilst hiding behind a veil ofexpected and anticipated sympathy. Why should we have sympathyfor an industry that marches from the decimation of one species tothe next and holds its hands out for subsidies with the shocked andsurprised look of where did all the fish go' whenever the latest re-source disappears?

Sean Connick TD is now the Minister for Fisheries. Deputy Connickhas spoken about some issues recently extracts from his website @http://www.seanconnick.ie/

Saltwater Fly Fishingpart 19 of 21Spring setupWith spring fast approaching lots of people ask me what is my basicset up for bass fly fishing in Wexford. What do I bring and what do Ifish with? The following is a list of my basic personal Fly Fishing BassSetup - Please click on the links for more details and diagrams/

    animations

    The Basics

The Reel - Danielsson L5W 6/9The Rod - Redington CPX #8The Line - Rio Aqualux Striped Bass Line at this time of year plus aRio Outbound WF8I/S

    The Detail

20 pound Dacron backing in a high-viz colour like chartreuse ororange2 wraps around the barrel of the spool, attached to the spool with a6-turn Uni Knot

Bimini twist on the line end of the backing with a doubled over clos-ing knot to provide double loopsI will cast with a #8 line on a light windy day and an #9 line on astrong windy day, but I will cast both on the #8 weight RedingtonCPX at this time of yearI will whip a loop with fly tying thread on the backing end of the flyline, sealed with superglue or Zap A GapI will place another whipped loop in the leader end of the fly line

Tapered leaders hand-tied with Rio Saltwater Hard MonoI will tie a Perfection loop in the fly line end of my leaderThe Leader is built and tapered with blood knots, starting with 27 lbRio Hard Mono, going to 22 lb, then 17 lb, then 15 lbTippet section of leader is 18 lb Rio Fluoroflex plus. Its actuallysmaller diameter than the 15 lb mono, so the taper is perfectThe go-to fly on a typical day would be a chartreuse and white Lefty

Kreh deceiver about 2.5 inches long tied with a Non-Slip Mono Loop.

Saltwater Fly Fishing - Part 20 of 21 - The BTDG.This is a fly tied for me by Andy Elliott the BTDG or the bucktaildeceiver gurgler.

    The original gurgler as

invented and tied byJack Gartside must rankas one of the greatestsurface fly ties of alltime. Falling between apopper and a slider itseasy to cast and when onthe water it can perform

all sorts of tricks -slides/squirts/splash. Aslow retrieve will of

course generate a wake when in calm water, whilst a short pull willcreate a spit and a splash much like frightened baitfish. At the endof your retrieve the gurgler will lift easily off the water, often eas-ier than poppers do, that sometimes grip and burst free if not

managed properly, and during the cast you will find the gurgler easyto put out there, where the fish are.

Now take Bob Popovics buck tail deceiver. Seen put into actionHERE and HERE and it rapidly becomes a favourite fly of many peo-ple. Tied skinny to get down deeper and with more material to ridehigher in the tide. The BTD is tied by using shorter and successivelymore compacted layers of buck tail it achieves a wonderful profile

it has almost endless possibilities and when tied on spec with a tierlike Andy the results are often incredible.

Combining the gurgler with the BTD results in a very, very effectivefly indeed. The fish eye view is a solid and wide baitfish profile. Thebucktail fibres breathe in and out on retrieving and stopping andthe gurgler prow allows you to create a lot of splash and wake and

searching interesting noise. Highly recommended these flies areavailable HERE

Saltwater Lure Fishing - Part 11 of 21 My Spring setupSince my posting about my basic set up for bass fly fishing in Wex-ford -What do I bring and what do I fish with? I have had lots ofquestions regarding my Lure fishing set up. So in answer to yourqueries the following is a list of my basic personal Lure Fishing Bass

Setup - Please click on the links for more details and diagrams/animations/help

    The Basics

The Reel Shimano Twin Power 3500The Rod Smith Blow Shot 90 RS or Smith Blow Shot B86 SPLThe Line Power pro 9kgs and 5kgs with Rio Fluoroflex tippet

    The Detail

I have pre-loaded 20 pound Dacron fly fishing backing on both spoolsof the Shimano as I only carry 135 metres of braid (both spoolsloaded with different BS)Bimini twist on the line end of the backing with a doubled over clos-

ing knot to provide double loopsMainline powerpro braid tied to the backing using an Allbright knotto the double loops of the bimini

14lbs Fluoroflex is tied at the end of the mainline braid using a Re-verse Allbright Knot

The leader BS and mainline BS depends on the rod / lure/ presenta-

tion I am making to the fish

I will place a rapala knot at the end of a one meter (varies) leaderof Fluoroflex to attach to my lure

My go-to lure on a typical Spring day (depending on water clarity)would be a Lucky Craft pointer 78SP - view in full screen mode for

best effectI will fish with the B86 at this time of year with small soft lures andsmaller sub-surface or surface lures and change up to the B90 onlywhen necessary
