Over the past few years, LS engine technology has revolu-tionized the GM performance aftermarket. Gen IV engines have set a new standard for factory horsepower and torque. To meet the growing demand of today’s high performance engine builders and racing enthusiasts, engineers at RHS® have recently designed an all-new LS engine block for rad-ical street and all-out racing applications.
Going beyond the limitations of other GM LS blocks, the LS Race Block is available in both standard (9.240") and tall (9.750") deck height combinations and is engineered for maximum clearance around a 4.600" stroke crankshaft. This was done by raising the camshaft centerline (.388"/9.86mm) and including priority main oiling that shifts the oil galley out-board. With this unique design, RHS® engineers were also able to minimize windage in the rotating assembly – leading to superior engine lubrica-tion at higher rpm.
To make it friendly for exist-ing race applications, the block contains both factory and motor plate race mounts for Gen I, Gen II, Gen III and Gen IV engines. And for quality control assurance, RHS® conducts a CT scan (similar to a medical CAT scan) on each block to ensure maximum precision and consistency. Combine that with more standard features than any block on the market and you get the new benchmark of LS pow-er, strength and compatibility.

• Material for oversized lifters (accepts 1.060" bushing for keyed lifters) with lifter bosses that are designed to clear tie bar style lifters

The internal combustion engine is often considered to be a large air pump. As the part of the engine where airfl ow is most critical, the cylinder head is key to the performance of an engine. The shape of the combustion chamber, intake ports and passages (and to a less-er extent the exhaust) determines a major portion of the volumetric effi ciency and power output of the engine. And nobody designs and engineers more power-effi cient cylinder heads than RHS®.

Designed for circle track and Nostalgia Drags Junior Class B Fuel competi-tion, these cast iron heads have been angle milled from the factory to a 21˚ valve angle, thereby increasing performance potential. This cost saving modifi cation is acceptable with most race sanctioning bodies, who typically allow a two-degree plus or minus valve angle change. The Pro Action™ 23˚ Style Raised Runner Heads are available in three confi gurations, including the standard “as cast” version with 220cc intake runners, raised runner P-Ports with machined seats and guide holes and raised runner P-Ports with-out machined seats or guide holes.
• Ideal cast iron head for circle track & nostalgia drag racing engines

The Pro Action™ 14˚ Heads offer the largest volume runner of any SBC iron cylinder head on the market at 235cc with the capability to be sized up to 285cc. In addition, the rolled valve angle, high port intake opening and offset valve location provide the most airfl ow potential of any competitive performance cylinder head. The fl atter piston-to-valve angle nets a 47cc combustion chamber to generate high compression without a raised piston dome. The heads are available in three versions: standard “as cast”, P-Port with seats and guide holes machined, and P-Port without machined seats or guide holes.

A replacement for small block LA and Magnum applications, the Pro Action™ 360 X Cylinder Heads feature a host of improvements over the factory originals and are an easy ticket to making 400 to 550 horsepower. The Pro Action™ 360 X is divided into two sub-series – the LA-X and the MA-X. The LA-X head uses the standard Chrysler LA intake manifold and rocker shaft, is drilled for the proper valve cover and gasket and contains both LA and Magnum accessory holes on both ends of the head. Designed with the Small Block Ford racing enthusiast in mind, these heads give you all of the benefi ts of professional CNC porting – straight from the factory! However, the CNC porting is done off of a known port, providing more airfl ow consistency than hand-ported runners. In addition to the CNC-ported intake and exhaust runners, the combustion chambers are also CNC-ported to moderate valve shrouding and maximize airfl ow effi ciency. Prior to porting, the heads are given a multi-angle Serdi valve job for up to 5 % more airfl ow right from the start!

pushrods are heat-treated for both durability and guide plate compat-ibility. The black oxide fi nish and laser-etched part number and length give these pushrods a great performance look and also shed oil giving you smoother, more effi cient valve train operation. SportsmanStainless Steel Valves
COMP Cams® Sportsman Stainless Steel Valves are avail-able in a variety of diameters and stem lengths for street/competition engines. Made from 21-4N forged steel alloy with 50 HRc minimum hard tips (eliminates the need for a lash cap), these valves deliver tremendous performance and durability. The hard chrome-plated 11/32" stems utilize pro-prietary oil retention surfacing, rather than thin fl ash plating.
To increase fl ow without in-creasing the valve diameter, high fl ow under-head fi llet re-lief was added to the design. Additionally, the swirl-polished fi llets generate a higher fl ow rate with reduced radial crack propagation, increasing their resistance to failure.

Properly changing cylinder heads can-not be completed without replacing the gaskets that were disturbed when the old heads were removed. RHS® offers high quality intake, exhaust and valve cover gaskets to suit many GM and Ford ap-plications. The intake manifold and valve cover gaskets are made from a silicone-reinforced material for superb sealing characteristics and are designed for reli-able, leak-free performance – even when used in high-powered race engines. When it comes to improving performance, increased airfl ow is a key ingredient. Available in 92mm or 102mm diameters, the Big Mouth Throttle Body™ increases airfl ow through a series of in novative design changes and slightly enlarged throttle opening. Signifi cant testing and engineering was conducted to optimize cross-sec-tional fl ow and eliminate airfl ow turbulence, especially at part-throttle operation.
The throttle blade’s increased thickness elimi nates defl ection, especially in boost-ed applications. To improve throttle response, the blade pivot is offset, while the beefed up linkage and dual throttle spring mechanism ensure total throttle control.

Designed for GM L92/LS3/LS7 engines using the latest RHS® design technology, the LSXR™ features a three-piece modular construction to allow easy disassembly & porting. Extensive testing led to a longer, less restrictive runner design, allowing re-moval of individual runners for modifi ca-tion. Dyno tests with a Big Mouth 102mm Throttle Body™ produced gains as large as 26+ horsepower & 25+ ft/lbs of torque at the fl ywheel.
Constructed from advanced polymer mate-rial, the LSXR™ is lighter, stronger and more heat resistant than comparable aluminum intakes. While it features a 102mm air inlet, it can be used with 90mm or 92mm throttle bodies. Other features include integrated nitrous bungs & perfect bolt-on fi tment, al-lowing use of factory accessories without clearance issues.

Frequently Asked Questions
Any ideas on what type of after-market headers I can run with RHS® Cylinder Heads?
In most cases, aftermarket headers are more than acceptable – they are en-couraged. They will typically improve the performance potential of any cyl-inder head (or engine, for that matter). However, RHS® cylinder heads feature spark plug locations that are optimized for better atomization to ensure maxi-mum performance. Therefore, it is im-portant to check for fi tment issues prior to ordering aftermarket headers – especially in unique, less common engine applications.
I’ve picked out a set of heads, any ideas on an intake manifold?
Look at velocity for low rpm torque, and fl ow for high rpm horsepower. Most carbureted performance intake manifolds are divided into two cat-egories – dual plane and single plane. Dual plane manifolds are better for low and midrange torque, and single plane manifolds (e.g., open plenum intake manifolds) emphasize mid and upper-rpm horsepower. In general, dual plane manifolds are better for street use; sin-gle plane manifolds are better for track use. Check with your intake manifold’s manufacturer for specifi c information. EFI manifolds differ in design charac-teristics, with improved midrange and top-end horsepower being common advantages of aftermarket EFI intakes.
Based on my cylinder head choice, what is the right pushrod size for my engine?
Some variables infl uencing pushrod length are engine block deck height, cyl-inder head dimensions, camshaft speci-fi cations, and many other characteristics that vary between individual engines. We recommend you measure using a simple, inexpensive pushrod length-checking to tool verify geometry, and contact us so we can set you up with the correct push-rods the fi rst time around.
What valve springs should I run with my cylinder heads?
Valve springs should be chosen based on compatibility with the camshaft you plan to use. Figure 1 lists general guidelines to help you decide which spring to run based on pressure requirements for different types of cams. Your valve springs must also have coil bind clearance of at least .060" over the camshaft’s peak lift. All fully assem-bled cylinder heads offered by RHS® display maximum valve lift in their tech sheets. Beehive™ springs typically have lighter open and seat pressures than conventional springs. The best way to choose a set of valve springs is to go with your cam manu-facturer’s recommendation after fi rst verifying that the valve springs will satisfy your cylinder head’s spring pocket diameter and installed height requirements.

What kind of camshaft should I run with my new cylinder heads?
Figure 2 lists a “ballpark” range of camshaft durations to consider based on the intake runner volume of various RHS® cylinder heads. Unless you run a high valve lift (above .550") camshaft with 220 or 235cc heads, you may not realize any performance advantage over cylinder heads with smaller intake runners. We do not make recommendations based on advertised duration because of the various rating methods used by cam manufacturers, which makes for poor camshaft comparison. Remember – this is a general guideline. Your intended application or the advice of your engine builder should always take precedence when it comes to cam selection on an individual basis.

Can you tell me if I have enough piston-to-valve clearance based on my engine data? Where do rocker arm ratios fi gure into all of this?
Piston-to-valve clearance varies between individual engines. Not checking it could lead to your camshaft having more lift than clearance, which can bend your valves, or worse, punch holes in your pistons – necessitating engine teardown or even a ground-up engine replacement. Write down your clearance once you’ve measured it, so if you decide to swap cams, some easy math can tell you if you have enough clear-ance. Measurement needs to be performed again if engine modifi cation occurs, such as swapping blocks or heads, machining deck surfaces or changing head gaskets. Refer to your existing measurement to verify fi t if you swap to a higher lift cam or change to a higher rocker arm ratio.
The following equations help explain the effect rocker arm ratio has on valve lift. As an example, we look at a common rocker swap: Small Block Chevy – switching from the fac-tory 1.5-1.52 ratio to a 1.6 ratio. Assuming a .500” lift cam-shaft (based on 1.5 ratio); we fi rst need to calculate lobe lift. The equation is as follows:
Valve Lift / Rocker Ratio = Lobe Lift
Plugging in the numbers gives us: .500”/1.5 = .333” lobe lift. Rearranging the equation gives us our gross valve lift with the new rocker ratio:
Lobe Lift x New Rocker Ratio = Valve Lift
Inserting the cam and rocker specs gives us .333 X 1.6=.534” – a substantial difference in lift. Many people say “switching to a 1.6 from a 1.5 gives .030” more lift!” This is true in some cases, but this number is a ratio – not a constant. Do not assume lift increase will be any set number. Do the math, re-cord the numbers and verify that you have clearance. You’ll never have to worry about putting a valve through your brand new forged racing pistons!
* If running a split pattern cam with a different intake and exhaust lobe lifts, do the equation twice (once for each lobe) to accurately calculate your gross valve lift.

Limited Warranty
Racing Head Service® (RHS®) warrants that all of its products are free from defects in material and workmanship, for a period of one year. The warranty period begins from the date of purchase. We recommend that you keep your invoice or receipt because proof of purchase date is required.
This limited warranty shall only cover the original purchaser.
The warranty does not include the following:
A. Any product that has been physically altered, improperly installed or maintained.
B. Any product used in an improper application, abused or not used in connection with the proper parts.
C. Any product that is defective due to neglect, unauthorized repair or as the result of an accident.
There is no implied warranty of merchantability or fi tness for a particular purpose. The RHS® obligation under this warranty is limited to the re-pair or replacement of its products. There are no warranties that extend beyond the description on the face of this warranty. RHS® will not be responsible for incidental, consequential, indirect, special or exemplary damages or any third-party claims or property damage or personal dam-ages resulting from use of its products. If there is by law an implied war-ranty of merchantability and/or fi tness, it is limited to the warranty terms set forth above.
This limited warranty gives you specifi c legal rights, and you may have other legal rights which vary from state to state or country to country.
MAKING A WARRANTY CLAIM
A. Contact RHS® within the warranty period at 3416 Democrat Rd, Memphis, TN 38118 or by phone at (901) 259-1134 Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CST. Before any merchandise is returned for warranty, please contact RHS® to obtain a Return Material Authoriza-tion (RMA). RHS® will need a specifi c and detailed description of your problem, along with the type of product and information about you for contact purposes.
B. Send the merchandise, freight prepaid and insured to RHS® at the ad-dress below, along with dated proof of purchase. All merchandise returned for warranty must be accompanied by an RMA. The purchaser must pre-pay transportation charges for return of defective parts. RHS® is not liable for any taxes or duties associated with international shipments.
Note: Products must be inspected prior to replacement.

THE LEGACY OF INNOVATION
Founded in 1967, Racing Head Service® began exclusively as a manufacturer of racing cylinder heads. Over the years, RHS® grew into an inte-grated racing company, offering complete turn-key engines and race car parts via mail order. Always an innovator, RHS® was among the fi rst to offer “crate engines” and mail order parts, es-tablishing its reputation as a leader.
With innovative cylinder head designs and port-ing techniques, the company became a perfor-mance icon during the 1970’s and ’80s in both circle track and drag racing competition.
In 1976, the RHS® management team, recogniz-ing the direct performance link between cylinder heads and camshafts, launched a new compa-ny – Competition Cams®. Throughout the ‘80s, RHS® and COMP Cams® became an amazing one-two punch for everything to do with racing. From their headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, the two dominated NHRA and short track com-petition with their racing heads, valve train com-ponents and engines.
Today, COMP Cams® has grown to be the domi-nant force in valve train technology and an estab-lished leader in the automotive aftermarket.
