About LVCT HealthLVCT Health (formerly known as Liverpool VCT, Care and Treatment) is an indigenous Kenyan non-governmental organisation and non-profit organisation. LVCT Health provides technical assistance to the government of Kenya, other governments in Africa, civil society organisations (CSOs) and private sector in strengthening responses to HIV prevention, care and treatment, sexual and reproductive health (SRH) interventions. LVCT Health works in Nairobi, Nyanza, Eastern, Central, and Rift Valley regions.

About LVCT Training Institute LVCT Training Institute (TI) was established in 2001 to offer diploma and certificate courses in health, social sciences, gender and disability. It works closely with relevant government departments and agencies in health education, civil society organizations implementing health programs; and private sector to deliver human resource for health in line with Vision 2030. LVCT TI trains over 700 health providers annually, and has trained over 75% of all the 7,000 HIV Testing and Counselling (HTC) service providers in Kenya and 90% of HTC counsellor supervisors.

CertificationCertification is through LVCT Training Institute, Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), or by State Department of Health agencies such as National AIDS and STI Control Program (NASCOP), Reproductive &Maternal Health Unit, and Community Health Services Unit.

Our CurriculumOur trainings are based on approved national and international curricula and we have quality management systems institutionalized for all the curricula delivered

Mode of StudyThe modes of study that we offer at LVCT Training Institute include the following:• Regular Mode: Students learn from 8:00am to 5:00 pm• Evening Mode: Students learn from 5:30pm to 8:30 pmBlock system Mode: A block is 10 weeks long and consists of 2 week class sessions, followed by 8 weeks of class assignments and/or field practice/ attachments.

Evaluation At LVCT Training Institute we continuously evaluate our students so as to monitor their progress. Evaluations include written exams, assignments, observed practice as students do their practicum, in session assessment through observation of students learning in class discussions, group work, and active learning exercises, among others.

ExaminationThe diploma courses are examined through KNEC examinations scheduled for July and November every year. For the certificate courses, exams are prepared internally and are usually conducted at the end of the course.

Diploma in Social Work and Community DevelopmentCourse Description: The course intends to equip the trainee with knowledge, skills, and attitude that will enable him or her to perform or manage development activities in society.Duration: The course is two years (24 months) for part-time students and one year (12 months) for full time students. Diploma in Counselling: HIV Testing and Counselling in Community and Clinical SettingsCourse Description: It intends to equip the trainee with knowledge, skills, attitudes and values which respond to their needs and other people’s mental health processes through reflection and evaluation of self and others.

Duration: The diploma is delivered in the following modes:

• Block Mode: 2 years (24 months) with 8 blocks in total where each block takes 10 weeks (2 weeks of class work and 8 weeks of class assignments).

• Evening Mode: 2 years (24 months) with 8 blocks where each block is 8 weeks long (6 weeks of class, followed by a 2 week period assigned for class assignments).

• Full Time Mode: Delivered continuously over a period of one year with the each of 3 diploma modules covered for a period of 3 months; 2 months of class followed by a month of class assignments.

Certificate in National HIV Testing and Counseling (HTC)Course Description: This course is designed to equip participants with knowledge, skills and attitudes to provide effective and quality HIV Testing and Counselling (HTC) services according to the National HTC guidelines. Duration: 2 and half weeksMode of Delivery: This training has two phases; first phase is a two weeks full time, followed by 2 days observed practice in a clinical setting. Certification: National AIDS and STI Control Program (NASCOP)

Entry Requirements: Recognized certificate in social and health sciences

Certificate in Integrated Services for Most at Risk Populations (MARPs) and Key PopulationsCourse Description: It sensitizes health care workers and counsellors on the psychosocial and sexual health care needs of most at risk populations (MARPs). The course equips healthcare service providers with the competence that is required to effectively address sexual and reproductive health needs and concerns of MARPs.Duration: 5 daysMode of Delivery: Full time Certification: LVCT Training Institute

Entry Requirements:HTC service providers, counsellors, medical personnel, legal professionals, social workers, community opinion leaders and gate keepers, law enforcement agents, practicing HTC service providers

Certificate in WEMA ChampionsCourse Description: This course is designed to equip participants with knowledge and skills to conduct education on HIV & AIDS related information and non-communicable diseases identify the health needs of staff and implement WEMA Kazini at the workplace. Duration: 5 daysMode of Delivery: The course is four-phased comprising of in-session training; practicum; performance review; and support follow up. Phase one takes 5 days in session training; Phase 2 up to phase 4 takes 6 months where the WEMA Champions are supported to implement a WEMA Kazini programme at the workplace. On-the-job training approach can be done within the workplace. Certification: LVCT Training Institute

Certificate in Community Health Extension Work (CHEWs)Course Description: This course is aimed at imparting knowledge, skills and attitudes to the community health extension workers (CHEWs) to fill in the human resource gap in implementation of community level one strategy in line with the Kenya National Health policy.Duration: 6 monthsMode of Delivery: The entire course covers a total of 360 contact hours for theory and 80 hours of field practice to enable the CHEWs translate the knowledge, skill and attitude acquired into practice at the community unit level. Certification: Community Health Services Unit – State Department of Health

Entry Requirements: Certificate in HIV testing & counselling, community health, psychology, counseling, social work, community development or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.

Certificate in Trauma Counselling following Sexual Violence Course Description: It equips participants with the knowledge, skills and attitude to provide effective and efficient trauma counselling to survivors of sexual violence.Duration: 5days in-session and 2 months field practice. Mode of Delivery: This course is divided into two phase consisting of 5 days in-session in phase one and 2 months field practice in phase two.Certification: LVCT Training Institute or Reproductive and Maternal Health Unit-State Department of Health.
