FOREWORD

This Memoir encompasses the work of a team of individuals and institutions committed to the sustainable development of the region. This work culminated with the awards to innovators whose efforts and dedication have demonstrated that Latin America is capable of great things. It has done it before, and it is capable of continuing making global impact with its innovations.

I am pleased to present the Memoir of the first edition of the Innovadores de América Prize corresponding to the year 2011.CAF – development bank of Latin America – its mission is to promote sustainable

development and regional integration. It decidedly supports its 18 shareholders in the design and implementation of a holistic development agenda, which endeavors to achieve high quality, sustainable economic growth. That is, an agenda that generates productive employment, is efficient, respects cultural diversity and the environment, and provides opportunities for all human beings for their inclusion and participation in the development process. There is no doubt that to achieve this it is essential to invest in all types of capital – human, physical, productive, social and environmental, productive transformation, smart international insertion, and institutional quality.

We believe that creativity and innovation in the present world are fundamental to reaching these goals. Therefore, Latin America must work together to improve its investment indicators in innovation, science and technology, as well as to learn from successful experiences of emerging economies, in particular those from Asia, which in the past few years have taken a qualitative leap towards development.

From our perspective, it is indispensable for the region to take this path, based on productive transformation. To be able to go from a model of comparative advantages, depending on natural resources, commodities and low wages, to a model of competitive advantages, where knowledge, innovation, technology, and the development of clusters are the decisive factors for generating greater aggregate value.

To conquer this transformation, CAF is committed to development and to providing a series of products and services to Latin America, which make the institution a valuable source of knowledge and innovation.

In this context, we are especially pleased to be part of the Innovadores de América Prize, which endeavors to identify and motivate Latin Americans who, through their innovative ideas, stand out in six areas: education, science and technology, design, sustainability and ecology, enterprise and industry, and community development.

It has been an honor to be an integral part of this initiative which now comes to fruition with the award to the most significant ideas in the fields mentioned above. Behind this process is the work and dedication of a team of researchers, jurors and journalists. But, above all, is the incommensurable work of more than seven hundred Latin Americans who, with a high and unusual motivation for the construction of a more promising future, provided their ideas and contributions to the development of the region.

We wish to thank and reiterate our congratulations to Innovamerica for this project to promote Latin America.

MESSAgE FROM ThE gENERAL DiRECTOR

It is with great emotion that we share this summary of what was the first award of the Innovadores de América prize, which we delivered in the Dominican Republic, where “it all started”, as Gustavo Sorzano, the award creator, says.

This is a seed to begin to cultivate the dreams of the future with which we wish to contaminate the youth of our Latin America.

I am convinced that we have started an innovative movement which will become a referral for new generations, with which we expect to popularize the fields of innovation, research, science and technology.

One of our objectives is to ensure that these fields of knowledge are not a monopoly of the elite and that youth from the whole continent find innovative alternatives to leave their mark and transform present models of development. These fundamental changes of our Latin American society will be possible if we can count on the support of academics, the public and private sectors, and the media.

Dissemination of Innovadores de América was essential to promote a wide participation, which exceeded our expectations in this first version of the prize. Articles were published in hundreds of webpages and traditional written press, such as newspapers and magazines of the region. Also, there was extensive coverage from our media partners in radio and television.

Thanks to this massive coverage of Innovadores de América, we received over 700 nominations from 19 countries, which in turn obtained over 120,000 votes, generating intense activity in our webpage which registered over one million visits since launching the prize in March 2011.

All of this would not have been possible without another crucial and strategic ally, our first regional sponsor, CAF – development bank of Latin America. From the first moment, CAF executives understood the importance of supporting this initiative to stimulate innovation as a tool of progress that eventually will turn us into a more competitive society to more successfully join the global arena. Working with an institution as prestigious and dynamic as CAF, with which we are joined by our mutual commitment to the integral development of the region, has been a very rewarding experience.

DiRECTOR’S MESSAgE

Innovation, inventiveness, and creativity as development catalysts. Globalization, concentration of world manufacture, technological advances, the global race for more knowledge, and industrial automation, are a threat to

employment as we have known it. Traditional sources of employment will no longer be relevant in terms of the demographic explosion of our countries. Innovation, promoted by our younger talents, must contribute to the collective wellbeing, to the generation of new income opportunities, while, thanks to entrepreneurship, it creates new sources of employment.

The media as a formative and transforming agent. Innovadores de América is a movement closely linked to the media. The scope and coverage of traditional and digital means of communication, force us to rethink its social role. The power to concentrate huge audiences should challenge our ability to use them to do good, to transform our societies into productive agents, and to promote new development and integration models.

Unknown Latin American talent. It is not only unknown, it is underestimated by ourselves. In many of our countries it is considered an inferiority complex in comparison to the intellectual prowess of the countries of the North. There is talent, and lots of it; Latin Americans who have positively impacted the world are many, and its dissemination through what we call “Icons and Legends” will demonstrate that our innovative capacity has already greatly affected humanity.

Repositioning of our continent. Latin Americans have only been identified as sport, literary or musical talents, and in some cases of films, in truly offensive roles. That is our image in today´s world. Innovadores de América is a repositioning platform for our continent and our people. This is not only to raise our self-esteem and our image of ourselves, but to raise our competitiveness and capacities, and to contribute to attracting global foreign investment. Innovadores de América is also an important platform of social responsibility, of public relations and image for relevant trademarks, which may wish to associate with the concepts of innovation, development, and, in particular, those that pursue goodwill and favor Latin American audiences.

WhO WE ARE With offices located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, INNOVAMERICA, INC., incorporated in accordance with the laws of Delaware, USA., is the institution responsible for the general organization, promotion, and implementation of the Innovadores de América prize.

INNOVAMERICA is formed by Grupo Pagés, main partner of Pagés BBDO in the Dominican Republic; Patricia Janiot, anchorwoman of CNN en Español; Gustavo Sorzano, artist, humanist and creator of the concept of the prize; and Aldo Espinosa, adviser of institutional strengthening for projects linked to the subjects of equity and anticorruption.

Graduate of Cornell University´s College of Architecture. He is a multidisciplinary artist and humanist, inspirer of significant projects in architecture, design, and publicity in his native country, Colombia. He was creative director of Leo Burnett and Toro/DMB&B in Colombia and ARS/DMB&B Venezuela; and communications consultant and creative developer for numerous companies such as USAID, Checchi / Co., and Louis Berger Group, among others; widely known in the field of plastic arts with numerous individual and collective exhibits. Creator of the Institute for Development of Creativity, founding member of Civitas Foundation, the Human Tissue Association, co-founder of the Universidad Ecuatorial, and founding member of Innovamérica.

iNNOVADORES DE AMÉRiCA BOARD OF DiRECTORS

Aldo EspinosaHe studied law at Universidad Rosario in Bogota, specializing in Corporate Law; worked as consultant in legal fields and in institutional strengthening of reform projects and modernization of justice for USAID, the World Bank, UNDP, and BID in Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Panama, Argentina, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic. He is chairman of Lexgeo, a company providing technical assistance in legal matters related to land tenure, and advices the Real Estate Unit of the Vicini Group in the Dominican Republic.

Gustavo SorzanoCreator of the Prize

Studied publicity at the Pacific Professional University of Santiago, Chile; has a Major in Advertising Management from ADEN Business School in Argentina, and a Senior Management Program degree from Omnicom University in Babson. He has worked mainly in the area of strategic planning and communications. In 2007, under his direction, Pagés BBDO became the first advertising agency of Central America and the Caribbean in obtaining two gold and silver Lions from Cannes, the most prestigious publicity award in the world. This achievement has been repeated consecutively in the past six years. Pagés BBDO has been the most awarded agency of the Caribbean and Central America in the main international competitions, and during the last two years (2010 and 2011), and consecutively, has been chosen as one of the best 20 publicity agencies of Iberoamérica by the two leader publications of the industry, the prestigious Latin Spots and AdLatina magazines.

Colombian, graduate in journalism and social communications of the Universidad de la Sabana, in Bogota. She is a senior anchor and emblematic journalist of CNN En Español, and one of the best known news referral of Latin American television. Patricia Janiot has been a privileged witness of modern history. During her years in television and radio she has travelled extensively throughout Latin America to report on key events, among them, numerous and historic presidential elections, summits, presidential tours, regional crisis, and papal tours. In 1990, Janiot received the Golden Mike award for best newscast by the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California, and was nominated for an Emmy Award.

iNNOVADORES DE AMÉRiCA

INNOVADORES DE AMéRICA is a communications and regional integration platform for the promotion of innovation and creative ideas to be used as development tools, and to promote new paradigms and values based on research, democratic principles, and dedication to work.

One of its tools is an award that identifies and acknowledges the most outstanding Latin Americans for their innovations in s ix categories: science and technology, sustainabil ity and ecology, enterprise and industry, education, community development, and design.

Innovadores de América intends to show Latin Americans and the world their worth and talents beyond arts, sports, and music.

The winners of each one of the categories receive a diploma, a trophy made of crystal with a bronze medal, and the sum of $40,000 dollars.

Other tools created by Innovadores de América are the Innovarometer (Latin America innovation measuring tool), and the massive dissemination of its activities supported by a regional and local network of media partners.

To promote new models and values through examples to serve as reference for strengthening the development of Latin American culture.

Contracted by Innovamerica, Inc. and coordinated by an expert, the jurors are formed by 18

professionals in the specific fields of the six categories of the prize. Each one of the six categories

MIRIAM AbRAMovAyBrazilianmasters degree in education, sao Paulo catholic university; sociologist graduated from Paris university; doctoral studies at the victor segalen university at Bordeaux. she is an expert in social science research and project design in the fields of education, school violence, and public policies for youth. At present, she is the coordinator of youth and Public Policies at FLAcso.

LEE yEE ChEongMalaysianhe was president of the world Federation of engineering organizations (wFeo) 2003-2005, and vice president of the Academy of sciences of malaysia. he is chairman of the board of the AseAn council of Academies of science, engineering and technology (AseAn-cAse). he was a founding member of the board of the Inter-Academy council of world science Academies and a member of the Academic council of the world economic Forum.

gonzALo RIvAs góMEzChileanAt present, works as consultant for institutions such as cePALc, IdB, undP, ILo, and others. he was executive vice President of the corporación de Fomento de Producción (corFo) in santiago, chile, where he worked for six years. other posts included representative of the chilean embassy before the united nations; consultant to the ministry of economics of chile; consultant for the Inter-American development Bank in several projects developed in Latin America. he has published numerous works in the fields of economics, finances, innovation, and development.

RodRIgo WALkERChileanhe is the director and manager of walker design & Associates and the director of the school of design of the universidad san sebastian, of chile; winner of numerous design prizes and acknowledgements.

gUsTAvo LUgonEsArgentiniandegree in economics from the universidad nacional de Buenos Aires; Accountant from the escuela superior de comercio carlos Pellegrini. MARI CARMEn MARgELíSpanishJournalist, masters degree in International relations and postgraduate studies in entrepreneurial management. At present she is the director of International Projects of the technological center (cetemmsA) responsible for coordinating international cooperation projects; training of companies on how to participate in european projects; and teaching postgraduate studies.

José RAMón PInSpanishhe is a Professor of Leadership and management in Public Administration at the Iese Business school and a human resources adviser to numerous companies. he is a member of the humanism and democracy Foundation. was part of madrid’s city hall (1995-1997); was a deputy before the madrid Assembly, a deputy at the valencia congress. Provincial secretary of the ucd-valencia (1976-1981). he has published numerous works and research in books and academic journals in the fields of sociology, economics, education, and human resources management.

MERCEdEs Inés CARAzoPeruviandegree in Physics, masters degree in economics, specializing in non-conventional energy. teaching experience in pre and post graduate studies in the field of innovation management; consultant’s work with small and medium industries, and technological development, and innovation. At present, she is the director of the technical office for technological Innovation centers of the small and medium Industries ministry in Peru.

Prof. Juma has made significant contributions to understanding the dynamic role of technological innovation in economic transformation in developing countries.

Sustainability and Ecology

CLAUdIo vALLAdAREs PAdUABrazilianPh.d. from the university of gainesville, usA; he is a biologist, ecologist, and business administrator; co-founder and vice-President of the Board of the Institute for ecological research in Brazil. he was a professor and rector of the university for conservation and sustainability escAs in sao Paulo. he is an Associate researcher at columbia university; has received numerous awards for his work in the protection of endangered species. he edited two books and has more than 30 articles published in national and international journals or book chapters.

MARk hALLE North Americanholds a degree in history and French from tufts university, usA, and a postgraduate degree in history from the university of cambridge, england. worked with the united nations in its environmental Program. At present he is the global director for trade and Investment of the International Institute for sustainable development. Fluent in english, French and spanish.

ALEJAndRo IMbAChArgentinianmaster degree in science, university of costa rica; Agronomist graduated at university of Buenos Aires. worked as rural extensionist, and university professor in the subtropical region in Argentina until 1984. he joined the International monitoring and evaluation team of the Iucn (International union for conservation of nature) working in development of methodologies, training, and technical assistance in various aspects of planning, monitoring and project evaluation, organizations, and sustainable development.

They are responsible for in-depth research and verification of the innovators’ creative contributions. The team is chaired by a technical coordinator who is responsible for its

cohesion, functionality, and efficiency. The research team makes the initial evaluation of all projects received and determines if they meet the Prize’s criteria and requirements for each category.

The team is formed by professionals of the various categories from prestigious universities and research centers throughout the world.

AníbAL fossATTI CARRILLoPanamanianhe is coordinator of innovation and copyright projects at the technological university of Panama; promoter of innovative projects and technical adviser of intellectual property and copyrights. he is an agronomist engineer with a master degree in economics with emphasis in project formulation, evaluation and implementation; presently studying at the technological university of Panama and universidad de Leon-spain to obtain a Phd in project engineering. he is the secretary of professional excellence at the Agronomist engineers Association of Panama and founder of the Latin American network of Intellectual Property and copyrights.

RodoLfo EChARRIArgentinianholds a Phd in Physics from the university of Buenos Aires. he has ample experience as a researcher and professor at the national sarmiento university; professor of engineering at the Buenos Aires university; author of numerous publications in english and spanish in the field of physics.

RodRIgo JARAMILLo RoLdánColombianhas a Phd in science and education, from the catholic university of cordoba; a masters degree in sociology and education – university of Antioquia, medellin. has ample experience in teaching and administration in the social and education fields at the Pascual Bravo technological Institute in medellin; has published numerous books and articles on education.

José RogELIo vARgAs CAMAChoCosta Ricanholds a master’s degree in ecological tourism from the Latin American university of science and technology; a degree in International relations from the national university of costa rica; postgraduate studies at Penn state university in management of natural resources and Internal tourism from northern Arizona university. Ample experience in programs of environmental and echo tourism education..

JoRgEn koRnIngDanishhe has a Phd in tropical ecology with emphasis in rain forests and an mBA with emphasis in leadership and organization from the university of Aarthus, denmark. he has experience in development and sustainable management of natural resources in central and south America, eastern and south Africa, Asia and europe. speaks danish, english, and spanish. At present he is manager of rural development at the “knowledge centre for Agriculture” in denmark.

JosEfInA fAbIAnA bRUnI-CELLIVenezuelanholds a Phd from new york university in Public Administration, masters degrees in Philosophy and Business Administration; graduate of yale university in Political sciences and music. she is a professor of post graduate studies at the Instituto de estudios superiores de Administración (IesA) and of executive education. she has written numerous publications in the field of education, and social entrepreneurship; has acted as consultant for organizations such as the world Bank, IdB, cAF and the education ministry of venezuela.

ALAn gARCíA LIRAMexicanchemical-industrial engineer, expert in technology management. was awarded the national prize for technology 2002 in the field of chemical engineering at the Autonomous university of yucatan. he is a board member of the mexican institute of chemical engineers, the national branch of the cted-resIrdes network, and the national branch of the research and teaching network for technological innovation (rIdIt). he is a member of the national chamber of consulting companies and secretary of the chemical engineers Association of yucatan.

ARánzAzU ToRIbIo RodRígUEzDominican-Spanishmaster in Industrial design and creation of new Products, universidad Politécnica de cataluña; Bachelor in Industrial design, technological Institute of santo domingo. Postgraduate studies in interior design. has worked in the public and private sectors teaching in the dominican republic, spain and Puerto rico.

COMMUNiTY DEVELOPMENT: Includes the active participation of citizens in the development of projects in the daily life of the community and dedication to creating integrated communities where respect for fundamental rights is promoted, exercising protection of the collective interests and transparency in the interaction between citizens and the State.

iCONS & LEgENDSThese refer to relevant figures that have left an enduring mark in both their own countries and the entire American continent. Their activities have exceeded their own borders. They have

become symbols and role models. Custodians of principles and values. Their lucidity and sense of innovation and creativity have left a mark on all of us, and for this reason, we remember them. From

them we have learned and admired their vocation for work and their unself ishness regarding their knowledge, their ideas, and advice becoming a reference point for all. They have become legends.

Dionisio SoldevilaIn 2006 this Dominican physician proved that the inside of our body still holds surprises and details that had been overlooked by Anatomy. He discovered a muscle in the buttocks and a tendon in the digitoroum extensor of the toes which is divided into 5 tendons, not four. For his discovery, these have been named the Soldevila triceps and tendon.

Dominican

Mario MolinaHe is the promoter of one of the most important discoveries of the world, so much so that our own survival could be at stake. He discovered the hole in the ozone layer. He warned of the dangers that chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) represent for the ozone layer. Mario Molina´s work improved awareness about the environment worldwide.

Mexican

Guillermo González CamarenaInventor of color TV in 1940, which he called the Trichromatic Field Sequential System. Therefore, he created the “Integrated Transportation Network”, which is environmentally friendly and turned the center of the city in a pedestrian zone surrounded by gardens. His urban model has been replicated in other cities of the region. With his work, Jaime Lerner formulates a different type of town planning that allows for sustainable development without harming the environment.

Jorge ReynoldsAn electronics engineer, he invented the pacemaker in 1958, and in doing so he guaranteed the lives of millions of people throughout the world. When this electronics engineer devoted himself to work with the heart, everyone laughed. No one understood the relationship between medicine and electronics. The first pacemaker weighed 45 kilos and saved the life of a 70 year old priest, who lived 18 years more. Today, the pacemaker weighs barely 25 grams and his nano pacemaker will be in the market soon, which is smaller than a grain of rice.

On the first and second of March, 2011, a forum to evaluate and consolidate the Innovadores de América prize was held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Among the participants were Orlando Jiménez (Chilean consultant who designed the Innovarometer), selected jurors, a small group of experts in the fields of innovation and public policies from several countries of the region, as well as officers from CAF – development bank of Latin America.

The concepts and focus of the prize were validated during the forum, and also the “specific weight” of the various indicators used to create the innovarometer s ratios. The prize s Legal Basis and Jury Regulations were also validated.

During a press conference held at the end of the sessions, the Prize Innovadores de América was officially launched.

During a press conference held in Santo Domingo on March 1, 2011, the Innovadores de América Prize was officially launched. Present were renowned guests from the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, and Chile.

During the event, presided by executives from Innovamerica, institution responsible for the organization of the prize, a video was shown in which Dr. Enrique García, Chairman of CAF – banco de desarrollo de América Latina, regional sponsor of the prize, expressed his unconditional support to the prize and the Innovadores de América movement.

With the goal of alerting, safeguarding and to demarcate the roads, in 2000, the Alien project was created in order to protect and alert pedestrians, vehicles, and drivers who circulate in roadworks.

Alien is formed of three basic pieces that can be transformed in over ten different types. It can be turned into a bollard, a cone, and barricade or signaling system. Its main contribution is its capacity to easily transform, becoming larger or smaller depending on the need of each case.

Always innovative and full of ideas, in 1986 he invented several items, such as a sachet holder for mayonnaise, a clothes hanger, a system of bicycle transmission without a chain, front side brake lights for vehicles, invention that was made public in 2000, receiving excellent reviews.

This is a portable mini device with a voice chip and 14 buttons, of which 6 are to make combinations in Braille or in a new system called PRD; it also has buttons for erasing, sound, and space. All this makes it work like a pencil, but it is actually a board that allows writing in Braille and transmitting through Bluetooth to an receptor electronic eyesight notebook where data can be read by people able to see and heard by blind people. The device allows storing of all the data which can then be transmitted through Bluetooth or by a removable memory to another device. It also has a help menu with the two systems: Braille and the new PRD with a voice option.

Lenteja Express is designed to satisfy the needs of vegetarian persons and those that not being vegetarian choose healthy, economic and delicious nourishment. The company sells in two ways: sale of lentil and chickpeas hamburger type meats, frozen and vacuum packed; and sale of several other products at points of sale, at gastronomic fairs of great impact in the city, and also local delivery service.

Lenteja Express has implemented new options of foods without changing the hamburger concept, to satisfy their customers´ demands. They offer vegetarian sushi, ceviche, quesadillas, nachos, pizzas and lasagna. In almost all of these options the lentil and chickpeas meat is used as the main meat substitute.

Gabriel Ramírez is a 37 year old man who advocates for the life and protection of animals. He recalls that being at a farm in Fredonia, he observed that someone was making meat with lentils, which prompted him to create an innovative product to sell and earn a living. Without too much knowledge of quantities or specific ingredients he began to do research and “learn while travelling” to make vegetarian hamburgers, that he started to sell at a rate of 80 to 200 daily. These were considered a success by those who bought them. After almost eleven months of travelling by bicycle in Peru, Ecuador and other South American countries, Gabriel returned home to offer an innovative and different meal option. That is when Lenteja Express opened its doors for vegetarians and non-vegetarians who are not afraid of trying something new.

Exploitation of thermal fountains to attract international health tourism. The tourism project Piedra de Agua resulted from a wish to innovate the way in which thermal waters are exploited and used, considering that they are being handled in a very basic manner which does not take into account its importance and real value as health treatments.

Durán assumes that his eagerness to succeed is a family trait. His grandfather, Ricardo Durán, in 1926 bought a property in the rural parish of Baños (south of Cuenca) and decided to use the thermal waters, existing in the region thanks to an inactive volcano, for touristic purposes.

In 1973 he founded Repycom, an office equipment distributor that sells $3 million a year. This firm is an authorized dealer for HP, Epson, Apollo, and other brands in Ecuador.

To create life: local infrastructure vegetalization systems as a synergistic solution to urban environmental problems.

Biotectónica is the practice of building spaces with live vegetal materials instead of using conventional inert materials. It is also the name of a research Colombian company founded in 2009 by two young architects. This research was the first in Colombia to study and validate the use of green roof technologies in the country as a sustainable urban development model which can be replicated in other cities. The pioneer study departed from inert materials and conventional building construction practices and focused on sustainable interphases between infrastructure works and vegetal covers specialized in the Bogota climate through the use of local resources, recycling and reutilization of materials, and an innovative design of specialized components. The infrastructure vegetalization systems developed and fabricated in Colombia by Biotectónica are economic and light, use underutilized roofs and facades of buildings, and offer a synergic and economic solution to the most critical urban environmental problems: air pollution, excess runoff, deficit of green areas, heat island effect, and destruction of biodiversity habitat.

BIOFABRICA is the set of non-industrial or industrial production of organic fertilizers and specialized production in the bio process lab of biological controllers, insecticides, fungicide and nematicides, that mixed provide organic product s of high quality to increase agricultural production up to 30%. It provides organic fertilizers inoculated with antagonistic and entomopathogenic fungi which control pests. Without a sound holistic handling and good agricultural practices of control, these pests could destroy the crops. These innovations have provided agribusinessmen ecological solutions to improve productivity while being environmentally friendly by using natural products that minimize the amount of chemicals used, that affect the health of the businessmen, their staff and end consumers.

Panamanian. During his childhood he lived in Boquete, Chiriqui province, Panama, and later in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, until he reached adulthood when he returned to Panama. He worked with his grandfather in a farm producing coffee, milk and cattle. He studied Banking and Finances at the Universidad Latina of Panama. After evaluating the growing market need for products that are environmentally friendly to improve agricultural and cattle productivity in the country, he decided to join his father in reutilizing organic residues of the region to recycle them and produce organic fertilizers. With a group of young entrepreneurs he started a new business model to develop biological products that could be marketed and which could help control insect pests. This resulted in research to know more about antagonistic and entomopathogenic fungi that control this type of pests in agriculture. After having isolated several national strains, an innovative environmentally friendly product was created, which helps agribusinessmen to obtain a better crop minimizing the amount of chemicals used while providing ecological solutions to improve production.

The Pharmaceutical Development Department and its Analytical Development and Implementation played an essential role in the technological development of the products resulting from this project: Glimetal® and Glimetal Lex® Prolonged Release Tablets.

Through this technological development two drugs with proven stability were combined in one dose in a tablet with a very fine coating, which constitutes the first phase of immediate release of the first drug (glimepiride), in a very low concentration in relation to the second one, which is slowly released during the second phase. Through the implementation of an innovative manufacturing method, an ingenious development of design and CAD-CAM technology, they achieved a new use for a reinforced resin which provides an excellent finish on both sides; single laminar freestanding pieces. In 2008 he graduated as Industrial Designer from the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urban Planning at the University of Buenos Aires. From 2002 to 2008 he was part of the renowned D.I. Hugo Legaria team. While there, he was able to create design projects for various fields, scales and complexities. His work in the design of neonatal incubators stands out, which gave him the expertise in the development of soft technologies (or low investment). Later, in 2009, he decided to use that experience in a project of his own and together with industrial engineer Diego Weisse created Coconut Lounge. The objective of this entrepreneurship was to manufacture excellent products with local resources, in order to compete at the international level. For the design of the “Boogie Lounge Chair” he received the National Innovation Prize (INNOVAR) in 2009.

Preparation and marketing of honey and flour from byproducts generated from the coffee industry. These products are transformed into human foodstuff, cosmetics and animal feed. According to studies, each plant of coffee honey reduces the emission of 4,500 tons of CO2/year and 214 tons of CH4, thus protecting the environment.

His greatest achievement, together with Juan Carlos Jaramillo (invention partner) is to have created the Empresa Sanadores Ambientales, Ltd. They obtained several awards in national and international innovation and entrepreneurship contests, which led to the construction and implementation of the first production plant of honey from coffee mucilage in the world (they are in the process of obtaining a PCT patent for the process in Switzerland) in the Municipality of Concordia-Antioquia with the support of the coffee grower Ernesto Garcés. At present, a new plant is under construction to process flour from coffee husks. Mr. Ramírez is responsible for the administrative and financial aspects of the firm.

Lo gratamente paradójico es que basta un clic para ingresar a esta in-formación con una laptop o una computadora sin mu-cha memoria o poca veloci-dad, incluso de seis u ocho años de antigüedad. Y su principal beneficio: este dis-positivo de acceso a alta velo-cidad ha sido concebido para ser utilizado especialmente en donde no hay Internet.

Estas son las característi-cas de la Biblioteca Mundial sobre los Derechos de la Per-

sona con Discapacidad (Glo-bal Disability Rights Library o GDRL, por sus siglas en inglés). Desarrollada en 10 años de investigación por la Universidad de Iowa, y con el apoyo de US$ 1,6 millones dados por Usaid en los pasa-dos tres años, esta biblioteca ya está en el Perú y operará inicialmente en el Centro Ann Sullivan, institución pionera en la inserción so-

cial de las personas con ha-bilidades diferentes.

PRIVILEGIADOSPor ahora solo hay 60 de es-tos dispositivos en todo el mundo. El Ann Sullivan es el único de América Latina en tenerlo. “Fue seleccio-nado porque es el modelo a seguir por sus sorprenden-tes investigaciones y trata-mientos, así como por su

disposición para compar-tirlos con el mayor número posible de instituciones, pa-dres de familia y defensores de las personas con habili-dades diferentes”, dijo Tho-mas M. Cook, profesor de la Escuela de Salud Pública de la Universidad de Iowa y creador de tan valiosa bi-blioteca digital.

En esta entrega, el re-presentante adjunto de Usaid en el Perú, Andrew Herscowitz, se declaró im-presionado por la excelente reputación del Ann Sullivan y confió en que la biblioteca digital será un activo impor-tante para lograr la integra-ción de personas con habili-dades diferentes.

Al recibir la donación, Liliana Mayo, directora del Ann Sullivan, señaló como próximo logro el enlace del centro con Amazonas, con lo cual los 24 departamen-tos del Perú estarán interco-nectados para las campañas de formación que se dan con teleconferencias.

La biblioteca digital contiene recursos educa-tivos y de organización de las personas con habilida-des diferentes en temas como vida independiente, transporte, salud, legisla-ción y política, tecnología, accesibilidad, empleo, educación y rehabilitación vocacional. π

Estocolmo [EL COMERCIO/AGENCIAS]. La relación en-tre madre e hija es una de las más estrechas que se pue-den sostener. Y de ello pue-den dar fe Sara Ottosom, de 56 años, y su hija de 26 años, quien lleva el mismo nom-bre. La joven nació con el síndrome de Mayer Roki-tansky Kuster Hauser, un trastorno congénito por el que sus órganos reproduc-tores no se desarrollaron.

Para darle la oportunidad de ser madre a su hija, Sara está dispuesta a donarle el lugar que la albergó durante los primeros nueve meses de su vida, su útero. Ambas se someterán a una riesgosa intervención quirúrgica el próximo año en Suecia, su país natal.

Para el trasplante, ambas cuentan con el equipo inter-nacional de investigación, cuyo líder, Mats Bränström, afirmó que la cirugía se ha-

ría “en la primera mitad del año que viene y que se estu-dia a diez parejas para ser in-tervenidas”.

El trasplante de útero ya se ha practicado con ante-rioridad, sin éxito alguno. En el 2002 se aplicó en dos mujeres de Arabia Saudí y, al cabo de 14 semanas, el implante tuvo que ser retira-do porque originó coágulos sanguíneos.

En el caso de Sara y su hi-ja, se suma el hecho de que existe una relación de paren-tesco.

Un resultado positivo les abrirá las posibilidades a muchas mujeres que atra-viesan por situaciones si-milares. “Me han dado una oportunidad que no creía posible”, declaró al diario local “Expressen” una joven sueca de 25 años que nació sin útero.

La NASA tuvo una vista privilegiada a través de su sonda Lunar Reconnaissan-ce Orbiter (LRO), que ronda la Luna a una distancia de tan solo 50 kilómetros.

El documento mencio-na seis servidores informá-ticos vinculados a sistemas de control de naves espacia-les. The Innovators 2011 tours were made in order to promote and disseminate the winning innovations among Latin American youth and the population in general.

Innovamerica s executives left from their respective countries on June 12th: Felipe Pagés, Patricia Janiot and Gustavo Sorzano met with the Argentinian innovators: Luis Aponte-Tinao and Dario Polaco, and Colombians, Andrés Ramírez Velez, Jorge Leal and Mauricio Agudelo in the city of Caracas, Venezuela.

The first winners conferences were given on the 13th at the offices of CAF – development bank of Latin America, in Caracas, Venezuela. The conferences were transmitted live to CAF offices in Bogota, Buenos Aires, La Paz, Montevideo, Panama City, Quito, and Spain.

On the 15th, the conferences were given at the Technological University of Panama, in Panama City.

On the 18th, joined by Ana Magdalena Canals and Felipe Pagés, the innovators made their speeches in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico where they were hosted by the Government of the State of Veracruz.

WhAT´S NEXTThe Innovadores de América movement has great expectations for the future. In the next two years we expect to give wider dissemination to the message of how important innovation is for the sustainable development of the region. We will also be adding new tools in addition to the prize.

Among the new initiatives are:

• We will approach entrepreneurship parks and angel and seed capital in order to create links among them and innovators in the region

• Strengthening of alliances with universities, research centers and government entities in order to promote their participation in the movement

• Widening of our media network in the region

• We will create a new webpage more robust and with better search engines. This will include a section devoted to property rights and a window for innovators to post their filing for patents.

• Updating and publication of the Innovarometer, a measuring tool of innovation in the region.
