In class, we decided who was the closest to living the ‘American Dream”. Each of us lined up

shoulder to shoulder, all hoping to make it to the sidewalk, aka the “American dream”. As a statement

was read off to the class, we were instructed to either take a step forward for something positive, or

take a step back for something negative. Each statement was given in a different aspect of life. There

were statements such as: If you were ever ashamed or embarrassed of your clothes, house, car, etc.

take one step back. If your parents were professionals: doctors, lawyers, etc. take one step forward.

I honestly felt as if it classified people as the type of lifestyle you have grown up with. I felt as if

some questions were more complex to be honest about than others. I am very fortunate to be able to

say that I was one of the very few people that were classified as “living the American dream”.

Approximately only one-fourth of the class has been fortunate enough to have been living the dream.

Although I was fortunate enough to have fallen in that category, it does not mean that I have had a

perfect life.

As we did this exercise in class, I couldn’t help but to feel very blessed for the life that I had been

given. As I looked around at everyone behind me, it made me realize many things about life. I know you

hear about all the terrible things going on in the world, but it completely opens your eyes to see

someone struggling right in front of you.

I learned from this experience to never judge anyone, whether it being in a good or bad

perspective. I can honestly say that I have never been one to judge someone because of my own

experience. I truly believe that it is a good thing that most people get judge at some point in life, only

because it shows you what not to do to other people.

For the future, I would recommend to never judge someone by the way someone looks or acts.

Just because someone looks like they’re living the “American dream”, doesn’t always mean that they

are. After this experience, I would never judge a book by its cover.
