Drowsy & Distracted Drivers

• National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that approximately 100,000 police-reported crashes annually (about 1.5% of all crashes) involve drowsiness/fatigue as a principal causal factor

• A conservative estimate of related fatalities is 1,500 annually or 4% of all traffic crash fatalities.

• At least 71,000 people are injured in fall-asleep crashes each year.

• NHTSA estimates these crashes represent $12.5 billion in monetary losses each year.

Drowsy & Distracted Drivers

Sleepiness leads to crashes because:

• Slower reaction time

• Reduced vigilance

• Deficit’s in information processing

NHTSA NCAP Proposal

Investigate rating system for crash avoidance technologies

• A step beyond Passive Safety only rating

Primarily address the four most significant crash modes

• Run off road – 27% MAIS 3+ injuries• Rear End – 19% of MAIS 3+ injuries• Lane change – 6% of MAIS 3+ injuries• Crossing path (intersection) – 30% of MAIS 3+ injuries

Recognition of Active Safety Technology

Integrated Safety

• Driver support & collision mitigation will drive advanced sensor development, but….

• The greatest opportunity for the future is driven by combining Active Safety Systems & Passive Safety Systems

Passive Safety will still be the dominating system in saving lives for the foreseeable

future

Integrated Safety Priorities

• Maintain safe speed & distance

• Stay in lane and avoid dangerous passing maneuvers

• Safely pass intersections

• Avoid collisions with vulnerable road users

• Reduce severity of accidents

• Improve occupant protection beyond current ratings and regulations

Integrated Safety

Sensing• How do we know we have an issue?

• Driver• Drowsiness, alcohol, attention to the road

• Vehicle• Lane Departure, collision warning, path estimation, GPS tracking, stability, closing velocity

Actuation• What do we do about it?

• Reduce driver workload/ increase awareness• Night Vision, Speed Sign Recognition, Intersection Awareness, Adaptive cruise control,

Queue assist, blind spot detection, Stop & Go

• Warn driver – raise awareness of Drowsiness issue• HMI, buzzers, chimes, lights, haptic warning on seat belts, vibrating seat, vibrating steering

wheel, pedal resistance

• Take action – vehicle control• Stability control, collision mitigation by braking, Safety System pre-trig

Sensing Technologies

Camera Type: Passive, far infra-red (FIR)

Sensor type: VOx bolometer

Wavelength: 8-12 µm (thermal camera)

Resolution: 320 x 240 pixels

Fully qualified for integration in most demanding locations

Compact design

FIR for Night Vision: Advantages

• Long range capability (300m)

• Intrinsic capability of detection of living beings

• No blinding due head lights of oncoming traffic

NCAP Proposals

Highlight Crash Avoidance Technologies to the consumer – what is the benefit?Crash Avoidance rating

• Option 1 – 1 grade for each technology adopted (e.g. C grade for 1 technology, B grade for 2 etc)

• Option 2 – Letter grade based on total points earned using assigned weighting (points) for each technology according to its overall effectiveness

3 Priority Technologies• ESC• LDW• Rear End Collision avoidance
