Prison Volunteer Programme

Survey Results 2011

Background

• All shops who participate in the Prison Volunteer Programme received an email that included a survey to be completed by the prison volunteer.

• The aim of the survey was to measure how the prison volunteer feels about volunteering with Sue Ryder. Questions included whether they enjoy volunteering with us, if they have received the necessary training to do their job, and whether they feel their confidence has increased since accepting a placement.

• The survey was anonymous and confidential.

• After only four months at Sue Ryder I feel if given the opportunity I would love to be employed upon release. I feel that the training I have had at Sue Ryder so far has given me the skills to go on to be a manager of a shop. It has opened my eyes to the varied duties that a shop manager has and feel that it is something I would begood at.

• I would love to gain paid employment with Sue Ryder but i don't think this is available to prison placements

• My manager has made me feel very welcome and has gave me lots of support and shown me much kindness, and with people like Brenda i now believe that i can have a life after prison.

• I have really enjoyed my self and feel like iam part of society

When you heard about the Prison Volunteer Programme was the expeWhen you heard about the Prison Volunteer Programme was the expeWhen you heard about the Prison Volunteer Programme was the expeWhen you heard about the Prison Volunteer Programme was the experience with Sue Ryder:rience with Sue Ryder:rience with Sue Ryder:rience with Sue Ryder:

What did you find most rewarding as a volunteer?

• Being treated like a 'Normal' person and not a prisoner.

• Meeting people, achieving targets and the spirit of camaraderie.

• I feel I am doing something constructive and positive.

• Gives me a chance to gain back my self confidence and to go back out and help others.

• Working for a good cause

• Confidence building

• Helping people

• Being treated as a valuable member of the team, and being able to help the more venerable members of the public. This shop is more like a community centre where people buy things which is lovely

• It was very good to feel part of a team and be made welcome after spending such a long time away from the general public.

• Interacting with customers

What did you find most rewarding as a volunteer?

•Interacting with customers

•Working as a Sue Ryder team member

•Being able to gain work experience as I’ve never worked before

•Being trusted again and helping people

•The opportunity to mix with people outside of the prison system and the fact i was welcomed

and encouraged by all in my preparation for release, which increased my self confidence

appreciably.•That i can be given a second chance and i feel part of a team and my boss treats me like a

paid employee not a con

•Improve my confidence and also gaining new skills.

•To have an input and work as a tem member. also to know that i am a part of something

which helps people who rely on charities like us.

•Sense of achievement

What did you find least rewarding as a volunteer?

• Long transit times to the placement.

• Having to travel on the bus in the sub-zero temperatures for so long rather

than being able To use the train which would be far quicker but is more

expensive.

• Not being able to come here every day

• The least rewarding thing i have found is working hard with no hot meal.

Would you recommend the Prison Volunteer Programme to other prisWould you recommend the Prison Volunteer Programme to other prisWould you recommend the Prison Volunteer Programme to other prisWould you recommend the Prison Volunteer Programme to other prisoners? oners? oners? oners?

What could be done to improve the Prison Volunteer Programme?

•More support from the prison to the shop managers.

•In prison, pre-training run by Sue Ryder staff.•More volunteers

•More information regarding the charity as a whole•By having the placement explained by the prison before hand so you know a

little more about the background of the charity

•Increased support and encouragement from prison officers not directly involved with the scheme.

•More effort on the side of the prison to inform the positives of charity work.

•More communications with the prison and shop staff.•To know beforehand what your actual job will be consisting of.

•More variety of charity shops•pick us up and drop us of every day

•Funds for a food and a drink.

Please share with us what the Prison Volunteer Programme has meant to you?

•The prison volunteer programme has meant that even though i did something wrong by

coming to Sue Ryder i have been given the chance to become a useful and valuable member

of the community again.

•It’s taken a lot of depression and stress way from me. i feel positive about my self and i

would like to thank you for giving me the chance and opportunity. prison has helped me a lot

•After 14 years in prison, I was slightly apprehensive of being sort of pushed in at the deep

end so to speak, however, my experience at Sue Ryder care stoke over the last 3 years has

given me everything i need to return to the "real world" with every confidence of becoming a

valued member of a law abiding member of society

•A friendly place to work where you are treated no different to anyone else who works there.

•It has given me time away from the prison and a feeling that i am trusted

•Happiness

•It has gave me confidece, self belief, work experience, being able to work as part of a team

Please share with us what the Prison Volunteer Programme has meant to you?

•It has definitely built up my confidence and ability to work with others and has taught me to

view my thoughts and opinions on things i agree or disagree with.

•After nine years in prison the opportunity to work in the community prior to being released

has been invaluable. The help and encouragement from all at Sue Ryder has given me the

self belief that a life after prison is possible.

•It helps me to improve my self esteem.

•Everything!!!!!!! its given me the chance to prove i really have changed my life for real

•It has meant a lot as i like to help people who need that little bit of extra help

•It has meant that when i get released it has prepared me for getting into the community.

Do you have any further comments or recommendations that could help us make the volunteering experience the best it can be?

• 100% support from the prison to the managers

• People who have their own transport for work should be given the chance to drive their own

vehicle reason being you can attend work at time and not standing in the cold waiting for

hour and half till the shop opens.

• None please keep up the excellent work

• To look into the different way's of travel and if it could be paid for by a head office rather

than out of the individual shop.
