Patriotic Catholic or Catholic Patriot?
Dorothy Day was a twentieth-century Catholic hero. During the Great Depression in the United States, she founded the
Catholic Worker movement to help poor people and those living on the margins, and to challenge the nation to adopt laws
that reflected Catholic values. She opposed war as a solution to world problems. She also fought for laws that protected
workers. She went to jail several times for non-violently protesting policies that she thought violated the Gospel.
Dorothy loved her nation. But Jesus was her king. Like him, she “testified to the truth” even when it put her in conflict with
her country and a majority of its citizens. We’re called to be like her.
Jesus tells Pilate in this week’s Gospel that he has no earthly kingdom. Jesus wasn’t a politician, but he hoped to reshape
society – government and religion – to reflect God’s Kingdom. That’s the work we carry on as his followers. For disciples the
cross always rises above the flag. We’re called to be Catholic patriots, people whose faith shapes our patriotism; not patriotic
Catholics, people who place national policies above Gospel values. Patriotism for Christians means using our political
system to shape a more compassionate, peaceful nation – being a seed of Jesus’ Kingdom. That might cause conflict with
other people at times. Our nation separates church and state. That means the state can’t tell you what religion to follow. It
doesn’t mean that Christian values should be separated from our political life. Christ calls us as disciples to trace each of our
political opinions back to the Gospel.
Here’s a question to ask when we make decisions about whether to support a politician’s proposal: If Jesus was our king,
would he enact this? GPBS eNews

ABUSE REPORT LINE:
Prison Sunday to focus on youth justice
Prison Sunday began in 2016 as an initiative from Pope Francis in the Year of Mercy to
raise awareness about prisoners and their families... “We need to nourish the roots
of our hope so that they can bear fruit … despite whatever evil we have done.
There is no corner of our heart that cannot be touched by God’s love,” Pope
Francis said at the time...Much support is needed for prisoners when they are re-
leased into the community and parishes throughout Australia can make a difference,
especially through the service of prison chaplains...Prison Sunday provides a time for
all Catholics to think about the conditions in our prisons and what we as Catho-
lics – in our schools, parishes and welfare organisations – can do to make a
difference...We thank those working in prison chaplaincy for their tireless, diffi-
cult and dedicated work, serving those unseen members of our community and
supporting prisoners’ families through trying times...We pray also at this time
for those innocent people impacted by crime and the affect that crime has had
on their lives...We remember the words in our Prayer for Prisoners, that God
has great love for us all and that he is a ‘God of Mercy and forgiveness’.
(quoted from the media release for the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference October 12, 2018)
We thank Father Khalid for his tireless work as Prison Chaplain in our Diocese and the support he gives our Parish Ministry Team comprised of 12 members (writers, prison visitor/chaplain, mentor & supporters). We are most grateful also for Peter Ryan’s important ministry at the Port Lincoln Prison.
This weekend we are fundraising at the Parish Market to raise funds to support the work of the prison ministry. Our team will be cooking up savoury items for sale at the market stall to raise funds for the "BLUE BAGS” project which assists prisoners during the first 2-3 days of their release. These bags can be used for their personal items and contain toiletry items, $10 phone card & $20 food vouchers.
A Special Leaving Collection will take place TODAY to support Prison Min-istry in our Diocese.

UPDATE ON PEG ARDILL
Mum has been hospitalized now for 9 ½ weeks. I spent time with her this past week and she is in good spirits. Her leg is now in plaster in an effort to help her straighten her leg. This is critical for her to walk unaided. She will be transferred from Flinders to Griffith Private Hospital in the next few days to continue her rehabilitation. She has been approved for 12 more weeks of rehab. The process is a slow and at times draining one for mum. She doesn’t recommend a knee replacement for anyone over 87 years of age! She is deeply appreciative of all your prayers.
ANNUAL REMEMBRANCE MASS
Parishioners are advised that the annual Remembrance Mass to pray for parishioners of St. Mary of the Angels and others in your families and amongst your friends who have died in 2018 will be celebrated on Thursday 6th December at 7.30p.m.
AN IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL OUR PARISH VOLUNTEERS
The Child Protection Unit has flagged its intention to audit Parishes in the Diocese in 2019 to ensure they are compliant with all their Child-Safeguarding protocols. In preparation for this Parishes are required to submit their Volunteer Rosters for all Parish Ministries and Activities to enable checks to be made to ensure all our volunteers have a current Police Check and have undertaken the Child-Safe Environment and Workplace Health, Safety and Welfare Inductions within the last three years. Some exemptions apply in relation to Police Checks. Those under 18 years of age, those over eighty years of age who have had a Police Check in the past and volunteers who undertake some ministry or volunteering role in the Parish less than seven times a year are exempt.
Those volunteers not covered by these exemptions who do not have a current Police Check are asked to contact Gayle in the Parish Office and obtain an Application Form. Those volunteers who did not participate in the most recent Induction are required to do so. Regrettably, if these requirements are not met, you will not be able to continue in your volunteering roles in 2019. The protection, safety and well-being of the young and vulnerable in our Parish demands that we are compliant with all our legal and moral obligations. Thank you in anticipation of your understanding and support of this matter.

PLENARY COUNCIL: A CHANCE TO LISTEN, LEARN AND CONTRIBUTE
One of the decisions of Tuesday evening’s Parish Pastoral Council meeting was to provide some opportunities for our Parish Family to come together to learn about the Plenary Council and to formulate a Parish submission to the Council.
Two sessions to be held in the church which will be facilitated by members of the Parish Pastoral Council:
Tuesday 27th November 10.00a.m.-11.30a.m. OR
Thursday 29th November 7.00p.m.-8.30p.m.
Copies of the Plenary Council Agenda Process we will utilize at these gatherings are available on Tom’s Table. Parishioners intending to participate in one of the Plenary Council gatherings are asked to come with some ideas to share in response to the key Plenary Council question: What is God asking of the Church in Australia at this time?

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
Over recent years the Parish has provided an opportunity for those not of the Catholic faith to participate in an affirming journey which explores through Scripture, prayer and personal testimony the history, sacraments, teachings and richness of our faith. The Program may culminate in a person choosing to embrace and be fully welcomed into our faith community through Baptism or for those already baptised being received into Full Communion with the Catholic faith.
The Parish is intending to commence a Program in February 2019.
An Information Session for those who would like to know more is being held on Wednesday 5th December in the Presbytery commencing at 7.00p.m. (for one hour). All welcome!

The Piety Stall has some new stock for sale, including statues, nativities, Christmas cards, St. Christopher key rings and more. Kathy Whitehead will be happy to assist with your needs.
