31 Picture Day

Additional Computer Time for 2016-17

The Olathe Public School District has made a change that you will see in your child’s weekly schedule for the 2016-17 school year. Last school year, during specials time (art, music, PE, technology, etc.) the specials rotation included a designated time for guidance lessons.

For this year, guidance lessons will be incorporated as part of the school day every other week, but it will no longer be a part of the specials rotation. Instead, students will receive additional time dedicated to technology. This will increase formal technology instruction from 30 minutes to 60 minutes per week.

As a system, we are excited for this change because it will allow increased access to technology, additional learning opportunities about digital citizenship, and will allow us to implement curriculum related to coding.

Please make sure that your child has an art shirt to use in

ART this year.

Olathe Indian Creek Library Update

The devastating March flood has provided the Olathe Indian Creek Library with a wonderful opportunity to expand in two stages. Stage One: Library service returns with the grand opening on Friday, September 2nd in the temporary location at Santa Fe Square shopping center (13511 S. Mur-Len two doors down from Savers). From 9:00am-8:30pm stop by to explore the new quarters, enjoy light refreshments, and live music Larry Kirwan of Black 47 fame will be playing between 6:30-8:30pm. Stage Two: In approximately two years the library will open at their permanent location in the former Hy-Vee building. This will take the library from its original 12,000 sq. feet to 68,000 sq. feet.

ABSENCE & TARDY POLICY

Regular and punctual attendance is crucial to

your child’s success in school. When students

arrive late to school, it disrupts classroom in-

struction and makes it difficult for them to

start their day positively. For these reasons,

Brougham will be following a strict attendance

and tardy policy this school year.

Students may begin arriving at school at

8:00 a.m. each morning.

The school day begins promptly at 8:20 a.m.

Students who are not in their classrooms by

this time are considered tardy.

You will be notified by letter and/or phone call if

absences or tardies are excessive. Four tardies

count as one unexcused absence. After seven

unexcused absences, information will be submit-

ted to the District Attorney’s office for truan-

cy.

Please help insure

your child’s success

by making sure they

are present and on

time for school each

day!

School Breakfast Ensures a Nutritious Start Every Day

Breakfast builds better bodies! If your child doesn’t have time to eat at home or they simply aren't hungry first thing in the morning, have them give our “Grab & Go” breakfast a try. It's a great option for all children, regardless of income! Breakfast will consist of milk & juice, a muffin or breakfast bar, a fruit product (raisins, applesauce etc.) & a protein (cheese or yogurt). Breakfast will be served be-tween 8:10 a.m. & 8:20 a.m. in the Multi-Purpose room. The Grab & Go breakfast is $1.30. Free and reduced prices apply.

WANTED: D.O.G.S. Dads of Great Students will be on the loose again this year at Brougham! Being a Watch D.O.G. is a great way for you to see what a typical day looks like at

Brougham and all the kids LOVE having D.O.G.S. at school! If you have not had a chance to sign up to spend a day at Brougham assisting students and teachers, please sign up via sign-up genius in the parent section of the Brougham web-site.

Brougham PTO The Brougham PTO needs you!!!

Meetings for the 2016-2017 school

year will be held in the Brougham

library beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Dates for the Fall semester are:

August 29th

October 3rd

November 7th

Involvement in PTO is a great way for

you to contribute to our school com-

munity as well as to keep informed

about all the events at Brougham!

Be Aware of

Walkers & Bike Riders

The school year has begun and with that comes more students walking to school and more car traffic on school campuses across

the district. It’s important for all of us who drive near our schools to be especially careful

of students walking. Those transporting students to/from school are asked to follow the recommended drop off/pick-up

procedures to ensure pedestrian safety and traffic flow. Parents should be sure to

buckle their children and use child safety seats when necessary, even if the trip is short. It’s also a good idea to remind your

child about ways they can have a safe walk to school.

Look for cars when crossing the street.

Use crosswalks when available.

Cross with a crossing guard whenever possible.

Don’t text while walking or while driving.

Walk in groups and be aware of your surroundings.

Be sure to follow the rules of the road if biking to school.

We encourage students below

the 3rd grade to be supervised by an adult when riding a bicy-

cle to school.

District Implements New

Parent Communication System

It is with great excitement that we share that the district has implemented a new parent communi-cation system to replace CityWatch. Beginning this school year, the Olathe School District and its schools will utilize Blackboard ParentLink. This will allow the district and its schools to quickly com-municate with all parents on a variety of issues. In the event of an emergency, school closing, early dismissal, or school delay, or even notification of events that may impact you or your child(ren), we will be able to send an automated voice message, e-mail, and/or SMS text message to all parents within minutes. This automated technology will allow us to keep you well informed of any im-portant school events by using telephone num-bers and email addresses provided by you.

The Blackboard system is connected to the district’s student information system. If you would like to up-date your email or phone number, or if the other parent would also like to receive this information, contact your oldest child’s school so we can update our records. We are excited about the opportunities this new and efficient system will provide the district as we strive to continuously im-prove our communication efforts for our families.

Arrival & Dismissal S.O.S. Please make sure your child(ren) knows how he/she is getting home PRIOR to

the beginning of the day.

Please call in any changes in your child’s dismissal BEFORE 3:00 PM.

Please pull all the way forward before stopping to drop off your child(ren).

Please make sure your child(ren) are ready to exit your vehicle when you come to a stop at arrival.

Thank you for being alert and driving slowly through the parking lot for the safety of our children!!!

Yearbooks! Yearbooks! Yearbooks!

Brougham will once again be using TreeRing for our school yearbooks. Through TreeRing you can upload your own photos throughout the year, share them with classmates for their use, and coolest of all - customize two pages for your student or family! Please visit the Brougham PTO Web-site for more details coming soon.

A Note about Fundraising…

Dear Brougham families,

Beginning the 2009-2010 school year, Brougham families were encouraged to sell En-

tertainment Books at the start of each school year in an effort to make up for cuts to

our building budget at that time. Our building budget funds a multitude of items from

library books, classroom supplies and student incentives to paper towels, hand soap,

and copy paper. After opting to discontinue selling Entertainment Books last year, we

suffered yet another cut to our building budget. To help offset these cuts, we started

doing a few smaller fundraising events throughout the school year that we hope will

be appealing to your family while raising needed funds for our building budget.

Today, you will receive information about purchasing Hy-Vee coupon books. Each

coupon book is $5. All proceeds come directly back to the school. There are over $50 in

coupons in the book including a $5 off your purchase of $75. In addition, students will

be creating their own unique masterpieces in art class with Ms. Heideman to kick off

the school year. In mid-October, you will have the opportunity to order a variety of

items that encompass your child’s work through Art to Remember. Once again, our

hope is that these small fundraisers can help us offset budget cuts while also offering

appealing opportunities for you to save money on groceries and enjoy your child’s art!

Please keep in mind that money raised from these fundraisers help support our school

budget. Our Brougham PTO also raises funds through the walkathon each year to

fund the PTO budget. The PTO budget supports field trips, assemblies, social events,

student activities, etc. More information regarding the PTO budget and walkathon can

be found at www.broughampto.org. Thank you in advance for your generous support of

our school!

Sincerely,

Stephanie Conklin, Principal
