Making settings from an application

To make settings for a specific appli-cation, open the printer properties di-alog box from that application. Thefollowing example describes how tomake settings for the WordPad appli-cation that comes with Windows95/98/Me.

Note❒ Actual procedures for opening the

printer properties dialog box mayvary depending on the applica-tion. For more information, see theoperating instructions that comewith the application you are using.

Making paper settings from an application

mat For:].❒ If the machine is not shown in

the [Printer:] box, use the pop-upmenu to display a list of availa-ble machines.

Canceling a Print Job

AAAA Double-click the printer icon onthe Windows taskbar.

A window appears, showing allprint jobs currently queued forprinting. Check the current statusof the job you want to cancel.

BBBB Select the name of the job youwant to cancel.

CCCC On the [Document] menu, click[Cancel Printing].

Note❒ In Windows XP, Windows

Server 2003, and Windows NT4.0, click [cancel] on the [Docu-ment] menu.

❒ In Windows 95/98/Me/2000 orWindows NT 4.0, you can alsoopen the print job queue win-dow by double-clicking the ma-chine icon in the [Printers]machine window (the [Printersand Faxes] window under Win-dows XP and Windows Server2003).

DDDD Press the {{{{Printer}}}} key on the ma-chine's control panel.

EEEE Press [Job Reset] on the displaypanel.

FFFF Press [Reset Current Job] or [ResetAll Jobs].

• [Reset Current Job]: cancels theprint job currently being proc-essed.

• [Reset All Jobs]: cancels all jobsin the print queue.

• [Resume Printing]: resumes print-ing jobs.

A confirmation message appears.

GGGG Press [Yes] to cancel the print job.

Note❒ Press [No] to return to the previ-

ous display.

Important❒ If the machine is shared by mul-

tiple computers, be careful notto accidentally cancel someoneelse's print job.

❒ If the machine is connected tothe computer using a parallelcable, sent print jobs may becanceled if [Reset All Jobs] ispressed while “Waiting...” is onthe display panel. After the in-terval set in [I/O Timeout] inPrinter Features has passed, thenext print job can be sent. Aprint job sent from a differentclient computer will not be can-celed in this case.

Note❒ You cannot stop printing data

that has already been proc-essed. For this reason, printingmay continue for a few pagesafter you press [Job Reset].

❒ A print job containing a largevolume of data may take con-siderable time to stop.

Mac OS - Canceling a Print Job

AAAA Double-click the printer icon onthe desktop.A window appears, showing allprint jobs currently queued forprinting. Check the current statusof the job you want to cancel.

Note❒ In Mac OS X, start Print Center.

BBBB Select the name of the job youwant to cancel.

CCCC Click the pause icon, and thenclick the trash icon.

Note❒ In the Mac OS X, click [Stop

jobs], and then [Delete].

2. Using the Document Server

Accessing the Document Server

The Document Server enables you to store documents on the machine's harddisk, allowing you to edit and print as and when you want.

Limitation❒ Applications with their own drivers, such as PageMaker, do not support this

function.

ReferenceFor more information about Document Server functions, see General SettingsGuide.For information about how to access Document Server from a client, see theprinter driver Help.

Note❒ When you use the Document Server, the following functions can be selected

using the machine's control panel:• Copies• Collate• Duplex• Staple• Punch• Paper selection: Paper source tray, paper type, paper output tray.• Functions related to paper selection: Cover sheets, slip sheets.

❒ The above items are dimmed, so you cannot set them from the printer prop-erties dialog box when the Document Server is selected.

❒ You must enter a user ID, using up to eight alphanumeric characters.❒ You should enter a Password and File Name to distinguish the job from oth-

ers.❒ Up to 2,000 files can be stored in the Document Server. No new files can be

stored after 2,000 is reached. Even if less than 2,000 files are stored, new filescannot be stored when• a file to be stored contains more than 1,000 pages,• the total number of pages contained in files stored exceeds 9,000,• the hard disk is full.

❒ The Document Server also stores files scanned using the Automatic Docu-ment Feeder (ADF) or exposure glass. You should delete unnecessary storedfiles once in a while so as not to exceed the capacity of the hard disk. For howto delete stored files, see General Settings Guide.

❒ When using the hard disk for functions other than those of Document Server,you may be unable to store new files in the Document Server, even if there areless than 2,000 files stored.

3. Sample Print/Locked Print

Sample Print

Use this function to print only the firstset of a multiple-set print job. Afteryou have checked the result, remain-ing sets can be printed or canceled us-ing the machine's control panel. Thiscan reduce misprints due to mistakesin content or settings.

Note❒ If the application has a collate op-

tion, make sure it is not selectedbefore sending a print job. By de-fault, sample print jobs are auto-matically collated by the printerdriver. If a collate option is select-ed from the application's [Print] di-a l o g b o x , m o r e p r i n t s t ha nintended may be produced.

❒ You can identify the file you wantto print by user ID and date andtime when the job was stored.

❒ The number of pages the machinecan save depends on the contentsof the print image. For example,the machine can save up to 30 jobsor 1,000 pages, including lockedprint files, depending on data vol-ume.

❒ If the first set of the sample printfiles is not as you expected and youdo not want to print remainingsets, delete the sample print file us-ing the display panel. If you printthe remaining sets of the sampleprint file, the job in the machine isdeleted automatically.

Printing a Sample Print File

The following procedure describeshow to print a sample print file withthe PCL 5c and the RPCS printer driv-er. For information about how toprint a sample print file with the Post-Script 3 printer driver, see PostScript 3Unit Type 2238 Operating InstructionsSupplement included as a PDF file onthe CD-ROM.

Limitation❒ Applications with their own driv-

ers, such as PageMaker, do notsupport this function.

❒ If you are using Mac OS X, thisfunction cannot be used.

AAAA Configure the sample print in theprinter driver's properties.

ReferenceFor details about configuringthe printer drivers, see the rele-vant Help files.

BBBB Start printing from the applica-tion's [Print] dialog box.

Note❒ Make sure to set more than two

copies.The sample print job is sent to themachine, and the first set is print-ed.

CCCC On the machine's control panel,press the {{{{Printer}}}} key to displaythe Printer screen.

DDDD Press [Locked & Sample Print JobList].

EEEE Press [Sample Print Job List].

A list of the sample print filesstored in the machine appears.

The following items also appear:• User ID: The user ID set up by

the printer driver.• Date/Time : The date and time

when the job was sent from thecomputer.

• Qty. : The number of remainingsets.

FFFF Select the file you want to printby pressing it.

A list of the print files stored in themachine appears.

Note❒ Press [UUUUPrev.] or [TTTTNext.] to

scroll through the list.❒ Only one file can be selected at a

time.

GGGG Press [Change Set Qty.] to changethe number of sets to be printed.If you do not want to change theset quantity, proceed to step I.

HHHH Enter the new number of sets us-ing the number keys, and thenpress [OK].

The screen returns to the file listscreen.

Note❒ You can enter up to 999 sets.❒ Press [Clear] to correct any entry

mistakes.❒ If you want to cancel changing

the set quantity, press [Cancel].

IIII Press [Print].The print confirmation screen ap-pears.

Note❒ Press [No] to cancel printing.❒ When printing is completed, the

stored file will be deleted.❒ If printing is stopped by press-

ing [Job Reset] after it has start-ed, the file will be deleted.

❒ If there is a print job outstand-ing, this will be printed beforethe sample print job.

Deleting a Sample Print File

If you are not satisfied with the sam-ple printout, you can delete the sam-ple print file, revise it and print itagain until the settings are suitable.

AAAA Press the {{{{Printer}}}} key to displaythe Printer screen.

BBBB Press [Locked & Sample Print JobList].


CCCC Press [Sample Print Job List].

A list of sample print files stored inthe machine appears.

DDDD Select the file you want to deleteby pressing it.

After the file has been deleted, thefile list screen will return.

Checking the Error Log

If a file could not be stored, you cancheck the error log on the control pan-el.

Limitation❒ The error log displays only the 20

most recent entries. If the power isturned off, the log is deleted.

Use this function to maintain privacywhen printing confidential docu-ments on the machine over a sharednetwork. Note❒ If the application has a collate op-

tion, make sure it is not selectedbefore sending a print job. Lockedprint jobs are automatically collat-ed by the printer driver as default.If a collate option is selected in theapplication print dialog box, moresets than intended may be printed.

❒ You can identify the file you wantto print by User ID, and date andtime when the job was stored.

❒ The number of pages the machinecan save depends on print imagecontent. For example, the machinecan save up to 30 jobs or 1,000 pag-es including sample print files, de-pending on data volume.

❒ After the locked print file is print-ed, the job is automatically deleted.

❒ Turning off the machine's mainpower switch deletes locked printfiles.

LCT has a problem. Turn Main Power Switch off then on. If the error appears again, call service representative.

An error has occurred in the Large Capacity Tray (LCT).

Turn off the main power switch, wait five minutes, and on again. If the message ap-pears again, call your sales or service representative.

dLower Staple is almost empty.

There are only a few staples left in the lower stapler.

Load more staples.

NV-RAM has a problem. An error has occurred in the NV-RAM.

Is the interface cable con-nected securely to the ma-chine and computer?

Connect the interface cable securely. If it has a fastener, fasten that securely as well.

Are you using the correct interface cable?

The type of interface cable you should use depends on the compu-ter. Be sure to use the correct one. If the cable is damaged or worn, replace it.

Was the interface cable connected after the ma-chine was turned on?

Connect the interface cable before turning on the machine.

Is the signal status satisfac-tory when using wireless LAN in infrastructure mode ?

To check signal status, press {{{{User Tools/Counter}}}} on the display panel, and then press [System Settings] on the display panel. On the [Interface Settings] tab, select [IEEE 802.11b], and then press [Wireless LAN Signal]. If signal quality is poor, move the machine to a loca-tion where radio waves can pass or remove objects that might cause interference.

Note❒ You can check signal status only when using wireless LAN in

infrastructure mode.

When using wireless LAN, is the SSID correctly set?

Check using the machine's display panel that the SSID is correctly set.

When using wireless LAN, is the access point correctly set?

Check access point settings when in infrastructure mode. Depend-ing on the access point, client access may be limited by MAC ad-dress.

Also, check there are no problems in transmission between access point and wired clients, and between access point and wireless cli-ents.

When using wireless LAN, is the LED on the wireless LAN card lit or blinking?

Confirm the orange LED is lit, and the green LED is lit or blinks during transmission.

Is the wireless LAN being used in ad hoc mode?

Turn the main power off and back on. See “Turning On the Pow-er”, General Settings Guide.

Otherwise, configure [Network] in [Interface Settings] in [System Set-tings]. See “Setting Up the Machine on a Network”, Network Guide.

Did you change the option settings on the machine?

When using the RPCS™ printer driver on Windows 2000 and con-necting with IEEE 1394, an error may occur if you change the op-tion settings on the machine. In this case, follow the procedure below:

A Unplug the IEEE 1394 interface cables connected to the compu-ter.

B Run the utility tool for the IEEE 1394 interface board, which is stored in the following path on the CD-ROM “Printer Drivers and Utilities”.\UTILITY\1394\

C Restart the computer.

If the [Toner Saving] check box is selected in the printer driver settings, the entire page will be faded when printed.

Print is smudges. Settings for thick paper have not been made when printing on thick paper in the bypass tray.

When printing graphics, the out-put and the screen are different.

Print areas differ depending on machine used. Information that fits on a single page on one machine may not fit on a single page of another ma-chine.

Adjust the [Printable area:] setting in the [Printer Configuration...] dialog box on the [Print Settings] tab in the RPCS™ printer driver.


printing is mal-functioning.

• Duplex printing cannot be done with paper set in the bypass tray. When using duplex printing, make settings to use paper from a tray other than the bypass tray.

• Duplex printing cannot be done with thick paper, OHP transparencies, or labels specified as the paper type. Specify another paper type.

• Duplex printing cannot be done with a tray for which [1 Sided Copy] has been specified as Paper Type on the System Settings menu. Change the Paper Type setting for the tray to [2 Sided Copy] on the System Settings menu. See General Settings Guide.

When using Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows NT 4.0, either combined printing or book-let print does not come out as ex-pected.

Make sure the application's paper size and orientation settings match those of the printer driver.

If a different paper size and orientation are set, select the same size and ori-entation.

When using Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows NT 4.0, Auto Reduce/En-large print does not come out as expected.

A print instruc-tion was issued from the compu-ter, but printing did not start.

User code management may have been set. Ask the administrator about valid user codes. To print, the user code must be entered from the printer driver.

The print job is not canceled even when the machine is switched to of-fline status.

Even when the machine is offline, printing is performed when [Job accept-ance priority] has been set in [Parallel Interface] in the [Interface Settings] in th-eSystem Settings menu. Change the setting of Signal Control to Printer priority.

Photographs and other data intensive pages take a long time for the ma-chine to process, so simply wait when printing such data.

The machine was in Energy Saver mode. To resume from Energy Saver mode, it has to warm up, and this takes time. To disable Energy Saver mode, select [Off] for Energy Saver 1 in the System Settings menu. See Gen-eral Settings Guide.

Paper is not fed from the selected tray.

When you are using a Windows operating system, printer driver settings override those set using the display panel. Set the desired input tray using the printer driver.


Solid lines are printed as broken lines.

Make the following settings with the printer driver:

• Change the [Dithering:] setting on the [Image Adjustments] tab in the [Change User Settings...] dialog box, on the [Print Quality] tab in the RPCS™ printer driver.


Optional compo-nents connected to the machine are not recognized when using Win-dows 95/98/Me, Windows 2000/XP, Win-dows Server 2003, and Windows NT 4.0.

You have to configure the option setup in printer properties when bidirec-tional transmission is not enabled.


Images are print-ed in the wrong orientation.

The feed orientation you selected and the feed orientation selected in the printer driver's option setup might not be the same. Set the machine's feed orientation and the printer driver's feed orientation accordingly.


The printed image is different from the image on the computer's dis-play.

With certain functions, such as enlargement and reduction, image layout might be different to that on the computer display.

You might have selected to replace True Type fonts with machine fonts in the printing process.

To print an image similar to that of the computer display, make settings to print True Type fonts as an image.

Check using the following procedure:

A Confirm the IEEE 1394 interface cable is connected securely.

B Restart the computer.If the error occurs even after executing the above operation, proceed to the following steps.

Printer Features allows basic adjustment of operations when using the machineas a printer.Although factory default settings are suitable for most printing jobs, Printer Fea-tures gives you access to a number of settings that control basic printer opera-tions. Stapling Precautions

Limitation❒ Stapling can be done only with the optional finisher installed.❒ Stapling cannot be done when paper is fed from the bypass tray.❒ You cannot interrupt the current job with a job for another function requiring

stapling or collating.❒ When printing on letterhead, stapling may not be at the specified position.

Note❒ When the finisher is installed, and when an output tray that cannot output us-

ing the staple function has been selected, the paper will be output accordingto System Settings.

❒ If you cannot make staple settings even with the finisher installed, optionsmay not be set correctly in the printer driver. Correct option settings in theprinter driver. For details, see the printer driver Help.

❒ When duplex printing is selected, adjust staple positions to the binding orien-tation.

❒ When the finisher is being used for another function's job (for example, a copyjob), printing will start after that job ends.

❒ When [Top left slant] or [Top right slant] is selected, the machine tries to stapleat an angle. However, if slanted staple is mechanically impossible, the ma-chine staples horizontally or vertically.

❒ When setting Staple in the printer driver settings, make sure that a collate op-tion is not selected in the print settings of the application. If a collate option isselected in the application, printing will not be as intended.

and the printed result may not be as expected.❒ When printing restarts after removing jammed paper, the printing position

When printing multiple documents such as handouts for meetings, you can sep-arate sets into order. This function is known as “Collate”. Collate stores datatransmitted from a computer in memory. The following are the three types ofcollate:

❖❖❖❖ Rotating CollateEvery other print set is rotated by 90 degrees K.

Spool Printing

Spool Printing allows print jobs transferred from a computer to be temporarilystored, and then prints them after they are transferred. This shortens printingtime as it maximizes printer efficiency.

Important❒ During Spool Printing, the hard disk is accessed and the Data-In indicator

blinks. Turning off the computer or machine during Spool Printing can dam-age the hard disk. Also, if the computer or machine is turned off during SpoolPrinting, spooled jobs will be deleted. Therefore, do not turn the power to thecomputer or machine off during Spool Printing.

Limitation❒ If data is sent to the machine using other protocols besides LPR, IPP or SMB,

Spool Printing cannot be performed.❒ Up to a maximum of 150 jobs at once can be spool printed.

Note❒ Printing the first page with Spool Printing will be slow.❒ The computer requires less print processing time when large amounts of data

are spooled.❒ Stored spool jobs can be viewed or deleted using a Web browser.
