To date, he is the longest serving DU of all time on the Headquarters’ staff. Bill was hired in 1962 to help better organize the Fraternity’s operations and make it a stronger and more viable organization. During his tenure with Delta Upsilon, the Fraternity grew by more than 50 percent, with Brother Butler overseeing the addition of nearly 40 new chapters. Bill also helped orchestrate and oversaw the major relocation of DU Headquarters from New York City to Indianapolis and aided in designing the area in which the headquarters facility was constructed, which includes a host of fraternity and sorority headquarters. Last year, DU’s headquarters was named the “Butler Memorial Headquarters Building” in tribute to Bill’s many contributions to the Fraternity. During his service to DU, Bill also made major contributions to the North American fraternity movement by serving as president of the Fraternity Executives Association (FEA). In his capacity as an FEA member, Bill often served as a mentor to fellow executives, some new to the field and others just needing sound advice. Wilford A. Butler positively impacted the lives of thousands of DU members during his 24 years as executive director, and transformed Delta Upsilon into a leading fraternal organization. Bill believed the fraternity experience had the ability to transform young men into tomorrow’s leaders. ` DELTA UPSILON FRATERNITY WILFORD A. Bill Butler began leading DU when he was only a year out of college.

tHe cHAiR The Wilford A. Butler education chair is an important step forward in securing Bill’s legacy as DU’s premier proponent of education. Funds contributed in support of the chair will be invested and the income from the endowment will be used to further DU’s educational programs. More specifically, funding will be used to fuel the salary of the director of education position and support those programs that help build better men. The director is responsible for the development and implementation of DU education curricula and programs and administers and evaluates programs that meet the needs of undergraduates, alumni and chapters. The educational experience portfolio includes:

tHe enDoWMent in fall 2010, Brother Butler’s two sisters, gail and charlotte, contributed $30,000 in Bill’s memory to set the wheels in motion for establishing the education chair. Their thoughtful and very generous gift is a bold challenge to Bill’s many fraternity brothers throughout north America, whose lives have been positively impacted by him, to “step up to the plate” and make their commitments. early in 2011, a small group of individuals formed a committee to aid the Delta Upsilon educational Foundation in formalizing a campaign to fund the chair. The campaign is well on its way toward building an endowment that will make it possible for the fund to pay out up to $50,000 each year.

“Wilford A. Butler, cAe was an American original, a remarkable educator. Bill was constantly teaching those around him fundamental, yet enduring life lessons: the importance of thank you notes; the joy of fine food and drink; the value of high standards; the appreciation of culture and history; the mastery of travel; and yes, the wisdom of a thousand phrases. Those of us who were influenced by Bill Butler know that we owe him a great deal of gratitude. My gift to the Butler education chair is simply a long-deferred payment on a debt i owe a great man.”
