12th Asian Print Awards 2014

The only regional awards of its kind in Asia

Make a note in your diary now!

The “Event” for 2014 is the Asian Print

Awards night, join us in Bangkok Thailand, on 21 November 2014

The annual Asian Print Awards was founded to recognise outstanding achievement in the print and packaging industries across Asia. With more

than half the world’s population represented in this fast growing area, communication in the form of printed matter links Asia’s diverse cultures. It

is imperative that such print achievements do not go unrecognised, especially among the population base that Asia enjoys.

The Awards are judged on a wholly quality-oriented set of criteria

to ensure that fair play is enacted at all times.

The Independent Judging Panel comprises highly qualified personnel from within Asia and around the world. The independent judging panel

has no knowledge of the actual entrants details. ALL ENTRIES ARE NUMBER-CODED.

Entries must be commercially produced work.

The Asian Print Awards is the only regional print quality competition of its kind in Asia. Supported by leading industry-supply companies, any progressive

quality print house should enter and prove that they are the best - by winning the Gold, Silver or Bronze award. Proving pride in quality awareness is what

customers love to see. It’s not just empty words, you can prove it.

If your company wins an award, a representative(s) from your company MUST be present in Bangkok, Thailand to receive the award on stage, we will not send any awards to you if you are absent!

Agfa Graphics today introduced Apogee 9, the PDF-based workflow solution that serves as the production hub for graphic reproduction, including commercial printers and wide-format print service providers. With connections to a wide series of output devices and many tools and

functions like integrated nesting and tiling and a new, patented, approach to color management, Apogee is designed to help commercial printers that are looking to do more for their customers.

“With Apogee 9 as the production hub, commercial printers can automate their

workflow, and it helps them to expand into the wide-format inkjet market,” said Andy Grant, Global Head of Software, Agfa Graphics. “Apogee 9 now brings typical wide-format tasks and existing powerful prepress functions together in one single, PDF-based workflow. It provides them with more flexibility and integration so they can remain competitive with added value products such as banners and posters” With APPE 3.4, Apogee 9 incorporates Adobe’s latest core technology for processing complex designs, and thanks to HTML5 the new WebApproval portal for page submission and approval can now be used on tablets and other mobile devices. 14 Digital Technology

Canon announced the launch of its lat-est additions to the imagePRESS line, the C800 and C700. In response to the growing needs for quality on-demand printing, the entry-level machine fo-cuses on three essential points: quality, productivity and versatility.

“This would be the first time that Can-on is entering into light production, which is also the largest growth in the marketplace currently,” said Philip Chew, director and general manager for the regional commercial printing products division, Canon Singapore.

The imagePRESS C800 and C700 are new colour production cutsheet presses, packed with technology stem-

ming from Canon’s award-winning imagePRESS series. The 70ppm im-agePRESS C700 and 80ppm image-PRESS C800 are compact in size, making them easy inclusions to any environment. The imagePRESS C800 series is targeted at the graphic arts community, especially commercial printers, in-house design houses and also corporate entities.

“Looking at the print market as a pyra-mid, the lowest part makes up a large portion of the industry. This would be the light production market. It is ex-hibiting the largest growth in the mar-ketplace currently, which is why Canon is making its entry to capture this mar-ket,” Chew said. “The global trend is

15Digital Technology

that print volumes have dramatically reduced. There are a lot more small run jobs by individual companies, which is why a lot of them are opting for digital printing. This is the main reason why light production is a growing market.”

Feature 1: Print QualityIn helping customers exceed the re-quirements of print jobs in the indus-try today, the imagePRESS C800 se-ries introduces a host of new features:

Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL): For quality, vibrant images, the machines utilise a 32 beam VCSEL unit with multi-exposure technology to deliver vivid detail and resolution of up to 2,400 x 2,400 dpi. This means even higher precision in the printing of text and images, while supporting high levels of productivity.

Auto Correct Colour Tone (ACCT): For the first time in a Canon light production device, multi-dimension-al mixed colour calibration can be achieved (rather than CMYK sin-gle colour calibration) with the new ACCT. The technology gets mixed colour to its initial condition based on values that are registered in the first ACCT at installation executed by a ser-vice technician. An upgraded and us-er-friendly colour calibration tool, the Auto Gradation Adjustment (AGA), helps PSPs deliver on uncompromised quality with the most vibrant images and text.

Consistently Vivid (CV) Toner: The newly developed CV technology is Canon’s proprietary technology, which allows for improved transfer efficiency for enhanced colour consistency and accuracy across various mediums of media, such as embossed paper and paper with irregular surfaces, for cus-tom and premium applications. The efficient toner transfer also reduces toner wastage, energy consumption and paper deformation, contributing to energy star savings of the series.

Compact Registration Technology (CRT): This technology harmonises with the CV technology, by ensuring that every single sheet is correctly posi-

16 Digital Technology

tioned during print runs and that each image is placed at the same spot on every sheet. This technology ensures that even print jobs that scale up to the thousands have precise alignment for highest quality results each time.

Feature 2: Maximum ProductivityThe imagePRESS C800 series is ca-pable of achieving high production speeds of up to 80 impressions per minute (ipm) across varying types of media, and achieve the fastest possible speed on heavy stock up to 220 gsm without compromising print quality.

Duplex printing is increasing in de-mand as it opens up revenue oppor-tunities, especially with heavyweight stocks. When handling heavy weight media of up to 300 gsm, the image-PRESS C800 series can produce du-plex print jobs with highly accurate front to back registration without any manual intervention or impact on print room productivity.

The device also features a new multi-drawer paper deck with three new technologies, which prevents misfeeds, even with coated stock. New materials within the system, a new separation control system and a system that blows air at varying speeds depending on the weight of the paper eliminates pa-per jams to maximise device up-time, hence enhancing print room efficiency and productivity.

Finally, the in-built innovative induc-tion heating and cooling technol-ogy enables the device to intelligently moderate its internal temperature to

optimise productivity with mixed me-dia jobs.

Feature 3: Media VersatilityThe imagePRESS C800/C700 pro-vides room for more creative appli-cations of print thanks to the wider variety of media the presses allow. Ac-cording to Canon, the series is able to handle textured media better than its predecessors. “Textured paper is an is-sue for most machines in the market, but not for the C800. You can be as-sured of the quality of print at every single pass,” said Chew.

The series is capable of handling a wide variety of media, such as heavy-weight coated stock, textured or recy-

cled material. This is attributed to the Elastic Intermediate Transfer Belt, which allows it to produce extensive applications on uneven media, ranging from leaflets, envelopes to other forms of marketing collateral.

Additionally, the imagePRESS C800 operates effortlessly be it short runs or even complex variable data printing for personalised print jobs. The image-PRESS C800 series has extensive auto-mated in-line finishing capabilities, to cast a larger net of business opportu-nities with minimal manual interven-tion. For the highest level of flexibility, the presses are also compatible with various third party in-line finishing devices.

RISO, Inc. announced the release of the industry’s first in-line full color inkjet cut-sheet Print-to-Mail Solution.

A RISO ComColor 9150 or 7150 printer, in combination with the new Wrapping Envelope Finisher, automatically personalizes documents and envelopes, then addresses, folds and assembles them into a completed, sealed mailpiece – at rates of up to 2,200 completed pieces (single page insert) of mail every hour. Using this compact, self-contained system, documents that require either automated or manual folding and inserting can be easily printed, inserted and post office ready with basically the click of a mouse. The RISO In-line Print-to-Mail Solution offers single-pass, variable data mail production which meets the security, speed, and quality needs of a wide range of business, educational or religious institutions that mail static or personalized (variable data) printed communications.

20 Sheetfed Offset

Koenig & Bauer (KBA) welcomed over 250 print pundits from 22 countries to its sheetfed offset plant in Radebeul on 26 and 27 June. Under the banner “Commercial Printing. Competence. Network. 2014” the visitors were updated on the hottest topics regarding commercial printing.

cally designed for conquering.” Martin Wenk offered insights into a consumer society full of emotion and with the aid of specific examples showed just what really counts in advertising.

As flexible as an antAnts are brought up to take on vari-ous roles, ranging from hunters, food gatherers and cultivators which look after fungi as a source of nutrition. They are all-rounders. KBA product manager Anja Hagedorn used the ex-ample of these versatile insects to ad-dress the topic of flexibility in printing. The Rapida sheetfed offset presses can achieve this level of versatility with the raft of different add-ons available. Along with standard materials (usually 0.06 to 0.6mm) they can handle thin substrates (from 0.04mm) up to heavy board, beer mat board or microflute (1.2 to 1.6mm). Rapida components are even used by KBA MetalPrint in metal decorating systems.

Hot-off-the-press topics for commercial printers at KBA

Following the two-day open house which focused on the latest trends in packaging printing in mid-May, this was the broadly based printing press manufacturer’s second, internation-ally acclaimed customer event of 2014. The first day was dedicated to theory. On the next day the participants were able to choose between various print demos which focused on perfecting, on-demand printing, mass production and finishing.

Martin Wenk, executive board mem-ber of communication agency Jung von Matt/Neckar in Stuttgart, held an inspiring keynote speech. In a creative and entertaining way he showed that in today’s media arena print and brand communication has to be surprising and convincing in order to be effec-tive: “Good advertising works like this as well, just like the most successful idea ever – the Trojan horse. It comes nicely packed as a gift, but it is specifi-

The KBA Rapidas can also be equipped for maximum flexibility for inline finishing. The RSP solutions from CITO open up numerous pos-sibilities in terms of grooving, die-cutting and perforation. These can be implemented in the printing units and coater. Anja Hagedorn presented pos-sible applications and compared these based on practical criteria, such as the cost of die plates, flexibility, ease of operation, register accuracy and print-run stability.

Sensory effects make a printed product distinctive and prompt consumers to look at it, touch it or even smell it. Lux-ury finished printed matter in particu-lar evokes such consumer reactions. One coater or a free-standing printing unit in connection with a coater are all that’s needed to create many finishing effects, such as drip-off, haptic quali-ties or fragrances. KBA has a wealth of experience in inline finishing and the company often sets new trends with its Rapidas. An example of this from shortly after the millennium was the hybrid printing method which si-multaneously uses oil-based overprint varnish and UV coating for premium finished printed products.

As clever as an artic foxFellow KBA product marketing rep-resentative Jens Baumann focused his presentation on the topic of per-formance in commercial printing. He looked at far more than just speed. commercial presses are designed spe-cifically for this with features ranging from fast perfecting at speeds of up to 18,000sph, AirTronic delivery, simul-taneous plate changing (DriveTronic SPC) and new drying processes, such as HR-UV und LED-UV.

The latter offers interesting approach-es to optimise investment costs with short delivery times: investment in conventional four or eight-colour presses is the lowest. However, the printed products cannot be finished immediately. Investing in a four or eight-colour press with coater would bump up the start-up costs, but it is then possible to finish the products immediately. HR-UV dryers before perfecting or in the delivery only mod-erately increase costs compared to con-ventional presses as a coater are not necessary. Printed products can still be sent straight to finishing. LED-UV is a process with a promising future. LED-UV dryers significantly and sus-tainably reduce energy consumption. In addition, they have a long service life, require little maintenance and of-fer many other advantages. Every firm should look for the optimum solution for them based on job structure and an accompanying cost calculation. Jens

Baumann recommends: “Look at the artic fox. Its fur offers the best insula-tion and energy-saving qualities of all land mammals. It also uses less energy when running in winter than in sum-mer.”

Under the key word “efficiency” head of KBA complete services & key ac-count manager Europe Sascha Fischer spoke about boosting efficiency by net-working, production planning/control and process optimisation. Under the name “KBA Complete Services”, the company offers integrated solutions and top-of-the-class automation tech-nologies, all flanked by comprehensive advice and consulting services. When required, KBA works closely with technology partners, such as Kodak, Optimus, Printplus, Logica, MBO, ClimatePartner, IPM, Perfecta, Mon-tex, Müller Martini and others.

Premiere: LED-UV also in large formatThe print demonstrations focused on typical commercial print applica-tions with particular attention paid to economy, efficiency, finishing and innovation. A ten-colour Rapida 106 was shown producing a cookery book signature. This was followed by a gang forme in quick succession. Four-colour posters were then produced by switching between the first and last four printing units. The other units were set-up for the subsequent job with Flying JobChange and the next job could begin immediately without any interruptions to production. Inno-vative UV drying processes were dem-onstrated on an eight-colour Rapida 105. The visiting print experts were

able to directly compare the images produced and cured using HR-UV and LED-UV. A further highlight on this press was inline colour measurement with grey-balance control from System Brunner.

The print demonstrations which took place on large-format presses focused on mass production. Typical book and calendar pages on silk-matt art paper were produced on a six-colour Rapida 145 with coater and delivery extension. The inks were cured by a LED-UV interdeck dryer for the first time ever in large format. The sheets were then finished with a matt aqueous coating, and with glossy UV coating follow-ing a coating change. A five-colour Rapida 145 with coating kit printed a brochure in various languages on the other side of the pressroom. With the Flying JobChange capability the plates for black ink were switched between the first and second printing units during production and the language variations were produced without any interruptions to production after de-coupling and coupling of the corre-sponding inking units. Both presses ran at speeds of up to 17,000sph.

High-quality finishingLED-UV dryers are also available for the half-format Rapida 75. KBA demonstrated the fast production and finishing of postcards on a five-colour press. Printing on the back of the sub-strate with LED curing after the fifth printing unit was followed immediate-ly by printing the front. This included inline perforation which meant that the individual post cards could be sep-arated easily. High-quality covers of a magazine were printed on a six-colour Rapida 106 equipped with a KBA Var-iDry HR-UV dryer and cold-foil kit. They were finished with cold foil and UV high-gloss coating. A further Rap-ida 106 printed at a maximum speed of 20,000sph.

Nearly all of the presses used for the print demonstrations are equipped with cutting-edge systems for qual-ity assurance, including QualiTronic ColorControl (inline colour control), QualiTronic InstrumentFlight (inline grey-balance control) and QualiTronic PDF (inline PDF control).

Packaging Open HouseThe LITHRONE GX40 (GLX-640+C)/ LITHRONE GX40RP (GLX-840RP) Packaging Open House was held in June at the Komori Corporation’s Tsukuba Plant based on the theme ‘Komori Packaging Solutions.’ Held mainly for overseas customers, the event provided information to users interested in or considering a Lithrone GX40 or Lithrone GX40RP packaging press.

The open house consisted of a seminar, factory tour, printing demonstrations, and presentations on packaging markets by customers. After the event, a party was held at a nearby hotel. Some 96 visitors representing 59 companies from 17 countries participated in the event and experienced Komori’s ‘Packaging Solutions.’

At the beginning of the event, the visitors gathered in various seminar rooms in the Tsukuba Plant according to language. There, based on the ‘Packaging Solutions’ theme, they heard an explanation of trends in and the outlook for the overall printing industry, an introduction of corresponding Komori products (offset presses, Komori-Chambon

machines, and digital printing systems), and a briefing on the functions and systems of the Lithrone GX40 and Lithrone GX40RP, which were specially specified for package printing..Printing industry trends/outlook .- Among the various segments of the printing industry (publishing, commercial, business forms, POP, packaging, other), packaging has the strongest future.- Annual growth of packaging in non-OECD countries is forecast to be 8.1 percent (2.1 percent in OECD countries).- .Lineup of Komori package printing presses- Komor i -Chambon mach ine s (enabling in-line finishing such as die-cutting for paper cartons)

The press performed initial package printing of pharmaceuticals boxes on 0.3 mm stock with plates that had been mounted in the press ahead of time, and after checking colors and register, the press printed 500 sheets at 18,000 sph without any adjustment. During the run, the measurement results from PQA-S, which has a color control function in addition to the print quality inspection function, were shown on the operation stand monitor (KID) for confirmation by the automatic feedback function.

Job changeover Ink removing Blanket washing/pre-inking Full-APC (Fully Automatic Plate Changing) Change of printing paper Test printing PDC-SX (register adjustment/color matching) OK sheet

During job changeover after the printing of 500 sheets, the various systems that support improvement of package printing productivity were explained, starting with the KHS-AI (Advanced Interface) integrated control system. The Lithrone GX40 can be equipped with a variety of features that are effective for package printing. By linking the automatic devices on the press with KHS-AI-based systems, quick stable operation is possible and paper waste can be significantly reduced.

The narration also explained that by linking PDC-SX (color control/automatic register adjustment/Smart Feedback), which digitizes print quality and enhances high-level print quality control, and PQA-S (print quality inspection/color control) to KHS-AI, optimization of the printing process can be further advanced and the productivity of package printing can be dramatically improved.

Since these systems are all Komori-made, the flow of data to KHS-AI is richer than would be the case if similar systems were sourced from various other manufacturers.

Stock: Sun Card 15.5 kg/K size; sheet thickness: 0.3 mmMaximum printing speed: 16,500 sph400 sheets

The press performed initial package printing of gift boxes on 0.3 mm stock with plates that had been mounted in the press ahead of time, and after checking colors and register, the press printed 400 sheets at 16,500 sph without any adjustment. Also, measurement of the total time for two jobs was started as a ‘time challenge.’

The LITHRONE GX40RP is a 40-inch double-sided sheetfed offset press that uses an arrangement featuring single-edge gripping and the elimination of sheet reversal. Due to single-edge gripping, the margin on the tail edge of the sheet that is necessary with perfectors is not needed, so paper costs can be held down. Thanks to the cylinder configuration of four double-size transfer cylinders without sheet reversal, the press offers stable transport of paper with high print quality in package printing. In addition, both front and back plates are imaged in the same direction, just as with a single-sided straight press, so plate imposition and operation are very efficient.

28 Packaging Technology

Since even the slightest migration of inks can turn into a ma-jor disaster, package printers have to satisfy the high expec-tations of food producers. The VSOP variable web printing press from Muller Martini lets printers meet these demands.

physical, such as artwork, and chemical, such as migration values, as well as sensory harmlessness of the printed packaging materials. “That’s why Nestlé only considers suppliers that can meet our commercial and technical requirements in a sustainable way,” Papilloud says. “Suppliers of packaging materials are called to account if our requirements are not satisfied.”

In-House StandardsIn addition to the legal requirements imposed, for example, by the European Union, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or the Chinese government, Nestlé sets its own, stricter standards for food packaging, for instance for the printing of the inside and outside of packaging and

Package Printing for the Food Industry: Web Offset has Many Advantages

“For all of our packaging materials, we require our printers to use only state-of-the-art printing methods that are designed for food contact applications,” says Dr. Stéphane Papilloud, Packaging Group Manager, Quality & Safety Department, Nestlé Research Center in Lausanne, Switzerland. That means that there cannot be any harmful effects on human health or any unacceptable changes to the organoleptic characteristics of the product (detrimental effects on smell, taste, color or appearance), and that everything must comply fully with all relevant statutory regulations of the country in which the products are sold. The producers of packaging materials have to demonstrate their compliance with Nestlé’s requirements – both

for UV inkjet printing and residual solvents. “We always keep our suppliers updated about those requirements,” Papilloud says.

The expert from the global corporation is impressed by electron beam inks. “It’s a good technology that does not require photo-initiators, so that there cannot be any resulting migration. However, the principles of low migration potential and low odor must also apply to the rest of the printing ink formulation such as acrylates resins, oligomers and additives.”

Environmental GoodsSince the costs of compliance with extensive environmental requirements (exhaust air treatment and explosion prevention) do not apply due to the

Lower printing plate costs, diverse substrate options and a reduced envi-ronmental impact – the variable size VSOP web offset printing press from Muller Martini has become a real alternative in package printing.

use of UV or electron beam printing inks, the environmental factor is one of the three major advantages that the web offset printing method offers for food packaging, explains Bernd Sauter, Managing Director of Muller Martini Printing Presses GmbH, Germany. “There are neither residual inks nor residual solvents, and neither are explosion-proof storage for inks and solvents nor a wash-up system for machine parts, cylinders and inking rollers required. That leads in total to far lower insurance costs for a production site.”

Growing Range of SubstratesAccording to the printing press expert from Muller Martini, there is another important benefit of web offset: the growing range of printable substrates. “Until a few years ago, certain substrates such as polyethylene could not be processed or required special knowledge of the complex printing process. Today, advances in technology enable the stable and reliable printing of such substrates using web offset.”

Whether it be the thermoplastic synthetic material polyethylene, polylactic acid (PLA) consisting of corn starch, or stretch sleeves, which are increasingly widespread thanks to the new web tension regulation on the VSOP variable web printing press, good cooperation between Muller Martini and suppliers is contributing

considerably to new substrates establishing themselves increasingly quickly, Sauter explains. Another example is LPDE (low density polyethylene), used by another of Muller Martini’s European customers for printing. The LPDE foil feels

softer and thicker, has lower density than a traditional foil made from HDPE (high density polyethylene) and barely rustles. Thanks to these specific qualities, it is ideally suited to the packaging of frozen foods.

Printing without water, yet finishing with coating

Since 12 May a KBA Cortina with two coaters has produced the daily newspaper Trierischer

Volksfreund, supplements, magazines and many other print products in high quality.

The possibility of inline finishing with water-based coating with the waterless coldset Cortina paves the way for the production of print products which are especially challenging in terms of quality as well as environmentally friendly, something not every newspaper house has. Volksfreund-Druckerei Nikolaus Koch aims to use this potential to creatively expand its product portfolio and reach new reader groups and ad clients. Along with the printing house’s daily newspaper, which even without coating is produced in an excellent quality, special publications with coating have already been produced to Volksfreund’s complete satisfaction.

More possibilities for printThomas Marx, managing director of Trierischer Volksfreund media house: “Besides the high-quality printing of our daily newspaper, the Cortina offers us the possibility to print additional own products, as well as external orders, in various formats, such as A4, and substrates. The two integrated coaters, a feature which so far has only been implemented by some of the few KBA Cortina users, will be used specifically to expand our service range.” Coating is primarily suitable for high-quality brochures, special products and supplements in full colour and high ink coverage, or centre spread ads which run over the fold. A layer of coating effectively prevents ink smearing or set-off which is often unavoidable when

printing such images in conventional newspaper production. Our first coated print runs have proven this. In addition, the KBA Cortina’s high format flexibility is advantageous for special publications. Its economic benefits are delivered by extremely low start-up waste, even with unusual print jobs, in the waterless offset printing process.”

New print era in TrierNamed after its founder Nikolas Koch the company, which has existed for over 135 years, today belongs to the Saarbrücker Zeitung media group. The Parent supported the medium of print with considerable investments at its site in Trier from the beginning. When placing the order in June 2013 Saarbrücker Zeitungsgruppe CEO Dr Joachim Meinhold said: “The decision in favour of the KBA Cortina puts Trierischer Volksfreund technologically and economically in a pole position”.

The Trierischer Volksfreund has a daily circulation of about 100,000 copies with twelve regional editions. Along with the town of Trier, it is distributed in Eifel, Mosel and the Hunsrück region. The regional business journal MACHER, Menschen + Märkte, the lifestyle magazine glanzvoll, the entertainment magazine for patients Pieks, the Familienmagazin for families, the children’s magazine Lucky and the football magazine Anstoß all add to the company’s media offerings. The publishing house also publishes the cross-border newspaper supplement DeLux together with Luxemburger Tageblatt. The Trierischer Volksfreund is available as a printed edition, an e-paper and an app for mobile devices. The media house is the region’s internet market leader with its website volksfreund.de.

Technology for the 21st centuryThe double-width KBA Cortina is engineered for the Rhine format with an output of 85,000 copies per hour and has the ability to print and coat up to 32 broadsheet and 64 tabloid pages in full colour. Its two Pastomat reelstands are fed automatically with paper reels. Since it is configured as a floor-mounted press this extremely compact and extensively automated Cortina is low in height which makes it user friendly and minimises the number of operators needed. Automatic web width adjustment and automatic plate changing with KBA PlateTronic ensure fast job changes. Both coaters, which simply need

an IR/TA drying aid and not a high energy heatset dryer, are integrated above both printing towers saving space. Water-based coating can be printed on both sides of the web in varying widths. Furthermore, the possible combination of a coated and non-coated web and the use of various paper grades enhance product flexibility. The superstructure has two double turner bars, three conical formers and a skip slitter. Additional features allow printed products to be glued, stitched or perforated. Other capabilities support the production of ad specials, such as four-page centre spreads or half covers.

The Cortina is controlled from a cutting-edge ErgoTronic console incorporating KBA PressNet, a production scheduling and press presetting system. Automatic colour and cut-off register controls, cylinder washing systems and further features support a high printing and folding quality with minimal waste.

Daily Thanthi Group has achieved sig-nificant time and waste savings at five sites of the leading Tamil-language newspaper, following the installation of QuadTech's Register Guidance and Ribbon Control systems with Multi-Cam®. Improved print quality is also credited with contributing to increased circulation and readership.

"Until the installation of the Quad-Tech register and ribbon systems with MultiCam, we were measuring color and color register manually," said Mr. S. Balasubramanian Adityan, Daily Thanthi Director. "The biggest chal-lenge came when the number of color pages increased; it was very difficult for operators to control register on our high-speed, double width and double circumference presses.

"The installation of the QuadTech systems benefits us in five ways: we can shorten make-ready times, reduce startup waste, achieve consistent color, and optimize labor and press usage, while also contributing towards a bet-ter product and increased readership," he said.

The technology has been installed re-cently at four of Daily Thanthi's plants: in Cuddalore, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Nagercoil, in Tamil Nadu, in the southern Indian Peninsula. Two addi-tional QuadTech systems have been in operation at the group's headquarters in Chennai since 2010-11.

The choice of the QuadTech systems were based on the company's proven technology, reliability locally available spare parts and service support, and

QuadTech's high market share in In-dia.

"Since installing the systems, we have seen a 20% reduction in the time taken to achieve good register, and a 10% re-duction in waste. Our ability to main-tain consistent color throughout the run has also increased, giving us bet-ter overall quality," said Mr. Adityan. "We used to face a challenge after each auto-pasting cycle, with variations in register, but that has been completely eliminated."

Both systems are operated from QuadTech's ICON™ platform with a user-friendly interface that facilitates quick and easy job setup, minimizes waste and integrates with downstream equipment such as UV coaters, perfo-rators and rotary cutters.

Speaking for QuadTech, Vinodh-kumar Balakrishnan, Regional Sales Manager, QuadTech, said: "Daily Thanthi Group has been carrying out an investment program, renewing its press and ancillary technologies in its print centers. This has contributed not only to better print quality but also to a notable increase in the paper's circula-

tion. We're very pleased that the Daily Thanthi Group has chosen QuadTech as a partner to bring about the changes that are contributing to this growth."

More than just a newspaper

Established in 1942 with a mission to educate and create awareness among all sections of the Tamil community, Daily Thanthi today is a full-color broadsheet newspaper printed in 16 lo-cations with a circulation of more than 1.5 million and an estimated reader-ship in excess of 7 million.

While carrying a full portfolio of news and features, the paper continues to fulfill its original educational mission, publishing model examination ques-tions and answers, past examination papers and an annual career guide.

With its long print runs and 15 edi-tions covering a vast and varied area, spanning all of Tamil Nadu, and now including a Mumbai edition and an on-line edition, Daily Thanthi is reaching beyond Tamil Nadu to the worldwide Tamil community.

Re-launch and structural rea-lignment of the drupa 2016: Focus on future technologiesAfter a strategic realignment, the drupa 2016 – undisputed no. 1 flagship fair for print & cross-media solutions – will be relaunched with a sub-stantially reviewed nomenclatura and a new key signifier. With the slogan “touch the future” it will focus on the industry’s innovative strength and establish a platform for future technologies.

“No other trade fair – regional or international, marginal event or special trade show – is of similar relevance for the entire industry. The drupa trade fair presents innovations and trends, provides hands-on experience of the printing and media industry, makes visions come to life and turns investments into real products,“ Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO Messe Düsseldorf, summed up the drupa’s unique selling point at his press conference on 12 May. “During more than sixty years, the drupa has been tried and tested – and has never failed to impress. And the drupa 2016 will be no different,” Dornscheidt continued. The secret of this event’s success can be summed up in three points: trend spotting, active endorsement and tailored trade show concepts.

At present, the printing industry is undergoing radical structural changes and far-reaching consolidation processes. At the same time, new technologies such as functional printing, printed electronics and 3D printing, which have significantly increased their market share, provide major opportunities and potential for growth. The same applies to applications and solutions in the area of digital printing, package and label printing as well as to the industrial

production segment. “It is precisely on these areas that the drupa’s structural realignment and repositioning measures are focused, highlighting the industry’s innovative strength,” Dornscheidt emphasized. “Together with our partners, the VDMA, our member companies Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, Koenig & Bauer, Kolbus, Leonhard Kurz, manroland web systems, Polar-Mohr, technotrans, Voith, Windmöller & Hölscher – to name but a few, and global players such as Bobst, Canon, EFI, Gallus, Hewlett-Packard, Ricoh and Xerox we have developed the concept for the drupa’s re-launch,” Dorscheidt explained at his press conference in Düsseldorf.

The drupa 2016 will stand for “Print & Crossmedia Solutions”. All technical processes related to the areas of printing and crossmedia, the entire range of applications and business areas will be presented at the drupa 2016. Solution-oriented technologies and applications as well as innovative business ideas or best-practice examples will be in the spotlight. The drupa’s new claim – No. 1 for Print and Crossmedia – says it in a nutshell.

The drupa has defined salient issues with acute market relevance and significant potential which are already playing an important role in the market or will do so in the future. These are: package printing including digital label printing, multichannel publishing and green printing. The implementation of strategic activities such as separate events, event formats and systematically addressing the industry’s target groups will define the drupa’s strategic re-alignment in these areas.

In addition to this strategic realignment the drupa’s corporate design received

increasingly integrated into the trade fair concept. In cooperation with the partners OE-A (Organic Electronics Association) and ESMA (Association in Europe for Specialist Printing Manufacturers of Screen, Digital and Flexo technology), the PEPSO brand – Printed Electronics Products and Solutions – was established. This issue

was initially addressed by introducing a special show and roadmap, which has now been developed into a unique concept. Since its premiere in 2012, the PEPSO brand has been systematically advanced and featured at six flagship fairs glasstec, COMPAMED, EuroCIS, K, EuroShop and interpack. This evolution will also become evident at the interpack 2014 where international exhibitors will present the latest trends and developments in functional printing and printed electronics.

The drupa handles the issue of 3D printing with the same strategic approach, and has introduced the “3D fab + print” brand, which is supported by the VDMA with its affiliated Printing and Paper Technology association. The importance of additive production methods for tooling, component production, medical technology and manufacturers of consumer goods is substantial. Therefore, this subject will take centre stage during the Bright World of Metals, MEDICA, COMPAMED and, naturally, at the drupa 2016.

Nomenclatura now with six main groupsThe so-called nomenclatura – the service profile of the drupa – was revised and updated and is now divided into six main categories (formerly seven):

1. Pre-press / Print2. Pre-media / Multichannel3. Post Press / Converting / Package Printing

a complete makeover and a new key signifier which highlights the innovative strength of this industry. It was important to retain tried-and-tested elements such as the pixel logo and the colour red, while conveying a new image which underlines the claim of the new drupa.

Sales Enablement and Technology – The Execution Gap

Watching a film we are often impressed – apart from a great story – by the technique or style with which the artistic work was produced. We are impressed when a film is entirely professional in its execution.

Execution – the act of doing or performing something, of carrying out

a plan, a course of actions to achieve a certain goal.

Technology is not to blameExecuting a technology implementation can only be done successfully if a few cornerstones are in place that also serve as a foundation to master the change and collaboration gaps. How often do you see technology decisions made, but major stakeholders from the lines of business were not involved accordingly, and the preparation work was only done in parts, if at all?

Then, the change and collaboration gaps popped up, one after the other. Execution is in short supply. Blaming begins. But – given a functioning system – technology is not to blame. It does what people allow the system to do. Root causes are how well the decision was made, how well vision, mission, purpose, goals and roadmap were defined, how well the implementation was prepared from a business perspective, how well change and collaboration gaps were mastered, and how well the program was executed.Vision, mission, purpose, goals and strategy have to be defined from a business perspective

Very often, those essentials are missing. Phrases like “improving collaboration” and “improving productivity” are often used, but they are not even a goal. They don’t tell a story, they are not measurable and the question “from what – to what?” is not answered. Even more important is the often

missing trilogy of vision, mission and purpose. Why is that so important? A vision statement is focused on the future, it answers the question: “Where do we aim to be?” A mission statement talks about the present leading to its future, it answers the questions: “What do we do and how do we do it? What makes us different?” Purpose answers the questions: “Why are we doing this? Why does this program exist?” It also covers the guiding principles that lead all actions to achieve the goals. Then, a strategy can be derived, which is a roadmap to get from here to there.

Methods, process and frameworks have to operationalize the implementationA successful implementation requires conceptual homework. It requires holistic and system thinking, led by a business perspective. To leverage sales technology successfully, to justify the investment, a robust framework of methodology, embedded in a flexible process, guided by principles, rather than by rules, has to be in place. It’s the heart of the system you are going to implement. It’s the same for sales enablement or CRM technology. The focus for a CRM is more on the sales methodology and the sales process itself. For sales enablement, the conceptual framework defines enablement services along the sales process/customer’s journey based on sales methodology and engagement principles. The operational framework defines how enablement services are created, published and provided as well as localized. If that’s in place, collaboration is already operationalized, and change and adoption programs have a much stronger foundation.

Nothing beats leadershipImplementing technology is not only a huge investment; it also entails a lot of change and a different way of working collaboratively, which I addressed in the two previous posts. The combined challenges of change gap, collaboration and execution gap make for a complex environment, which requires leadership, leadership and leadership to succeed.

Leadership cannot be delegated. Business power is necessary. The larger the program, the more leadership is required – from the sales leader – continuously.

ThermoFlexX 80 sets new standardsThe new ThermoFlexX 80 is the first completely in-house designed and manufactured model in the company’s imager range since Xeikon acquired FlexoLaser in 2012 and incorporates a level of innovation that has not previously been seen in a flexo imager.

a minimum at all times and this latest imager is fitted with a sensor that will automatically check that the thickness and size of the plate on the drum is correct for the job about to be exposed.

“To overcome the need to handle plates manually, one of the main causes of plate damage, we have created the Flextray. This mobile table can be adjusted easily to transport and feed plates into the innovative guiding system, which ensures that even plates as thick as 6.35 mm can be seamlessly mounted on the drum.”

All ThermoFlexX imagers utilise IPG fibre lasers operating at 1,064 nm, which combine low energy consumption with high reliability. The imagers will expose any plate with a LAM layer such as flexo, letterpress and dry offset, as well as Gallus Screeny (digital screen) and ablative film. The imagers can handle any thickness from a 0.18 mm ablative film to a 6.35 mm flexo plate, and support all relevant technologies such as flat top dots. This means that if a printer uses plates from

any leading supplier e.g. Flint, DuPont, Asahi, MacDermid, Toyobo, Toray etc., they can continue without changing their normal working practices.

ThermoFlexX imagers accept 1-bit TIFF files generated by any workflow, RIP or front-end and will handle any innovative screens such as hybrid or surface screens. The screened 1-bit TIFF file could be a single job file, which can be assembled on a template, or it could be an already assembled 1-bit TIFF plate. A philosophy of ‘openness’ means that ThermoFlexX imagers can be integrated seamlessly into existing workflows such as those from Esko Graphics, Hybrid Software, Kodak and Agfa.

“We have incorporated a host of features within our Multiplate software to make processing digital data easy – basic step and repeat functionality, the ability to simply drag and drop files into templates, plate cropping and job organisation, file archiving, TIFF viewing etc,” said Lievens. “Towards the end of 2014 we will launch

A dual-head imaging feature, available from August, will enable output speeds of 12 sq metres an hour at 2,400 dpi, making the ThermoFlexX 80 the fastest flexo imager in the world.

This latest model, equipped with a state-of-the-art imaging concept, consists of three independent modules - the motor, laser and optics. The flexible design allows straightforward replacement of any of these modules, thus simplifying service and future hardware upgrades, while providing the possibility for remote optical fine-tuning. The newly designed optical system has improved imaging quality, while the maximum resolution of 5,080 dpi is the highest on the market.

“Our engineers and development teams have incorporated a high degree of automation into theThermoFlexX 80, from the automatic calibration system that guarantees jobs are always imaged under optimum conditions, to the ability for the operator to load and unload plates at the touch of a button,” said Christophe Lievens, director sales and marketing for basysPrint and ThermoFlexX. “We have examined how to keep wastage to

Page 43: Print World Asia (Issue 7 July 2014)

43Packaging Technology

Multiplate 4.0 software which will incorporate a new, and very intuitive, user interface. Features will include the ability to support multiple imposition sheets plus different resolutions on the same sheet, while the new database will provide job tracking, filter, search and improved archive functions. There will be the ability to integrate with workflows and ERP systems as well as external equipment such as cutting tables and mounting devices.”

There are six ThermoFlexX imagers in the range, the smallest - the ThermoFlexX 18 – handling a maximum plate size of 508 x 420 mm, while the ThermoFlexX 80 can be used with plates up to 1,270 x 2,032 mm.

Many of the unique features that have been developed at the Ypres factory are available across all six models.

This includes the vacuum slider facility that allows the operator to cut off vacuum to areas of the drum not mounted, simply by moving a slider to the edge of the plate (this function is automated on the new ThermoFlexX 80). Eliminating the need to apply special tape, or cutting plates to fit the unused part of the drum, means that customers can easily fit and expose (at full speed) plate off-cuts that would otherwise normally be thrown away.

ThermoFlexX provides a greater choice of resolutions than any other flexo

imager in the world, with the ability to have all five options on one machine – 2,400, 2,540, 4,000, 4,800 and 5,080 dpi. The latter resolution allows halftone screens of 250 lpi, suitable for intricate, high quality printing. Depending upon the job being sent by the workflow the ThermoFlexX 80 will automatically select the correct resolution and alter the optics accordingly, another feature unique to this imager.

The creation of a hybrid drum that enables plates to be held by either vacuum or magnets means that customers can expose standard polymer flexo plates or steel-backed letterpress plates. There is an advanced automatic clamping system and, combined with the slow drum rotation feature, this ensures that plate mounting is straightforward and accurate. Automatic plate clamping is available on the larger models.

“Keeping control of costs is vital to any graphic arts business, and at every single stage we have examined how best to provide efficiency, low wastage, ease of use and high productivity,” said Lievens. “To achieve this we’ve utilised the highest quality of components. For instance, on the larger models we drive the drum directly as this eliminates friction and heat generation and ensures a constant speed without fluctuations.

“Innovation is an integral part of our philosophy and all of the industry-leading features that we have incorporated into the ThermoFlexX 80 such as the modular design of the imaging solution, with three independent modules, and the high level of automation, will be built into the ThermoFlexX 60, which is being redesigned during the summer for a product launch in the autumn. This will include a new Flextray unit suitable for that size of imager.

“It’s obvious from the investment we are making and the breakthroughs we are achieving thatXeikon Prepress is totally committed to the flexo industry. Our aim at ThermoFlexX is to oneday have the standing in the flexo sector that Xeikon currently has in the digital press market. For the moment, it’s a case of watch this space!”

Far East Makes The Switch to Flexo with RotamagSingapore-based Far East Label opted for Rotamag Flexography press for efficiency, speed, and its proprietary Australian technology. Sha Jumari reports. The latest success story in transitioning from letterpress to flexography comes in the form of Far East Label. When labels started out just ten years ago, it was just a small department in the Far East plant, which mainly produces cartons. Understanding that labels are an integral part of packaging, the company decided to branch out to establish Far East Label Pte Ltd. The idea was to supply Far East’s existing packaging customers with labels as well.

Initially, Far East Label was supplying within Singapore, but soon found the local market for labels to be rather

difficult: “Even if there are orders, it comes from the FMCG and food industry, which is very saturated and price-sensitive,” said CK Teng, managing director, Far East Label Pte Ltd. “So we went out to look for export markets instead. In fact, we export about 70% of our products, mainly to Australia.”

This was one of the main reasons for choosing the Rotamag – it was Australian-made: “The Australian-designed flexo knows what kind of processes we need to produce products that are unique for the Australian market, and proprietary to the Australia as well.”

Teng added that they considered European flexo presses, but found out that it would require a lot of modifications to the machines in order to be able to produce their largely Australian exports.

Another feature of the flexo that appealed to Teng is in its ability to run unsupported material. Rotamag’s rewinder allows it to do just that, and efficiently too.

Page 47: Print World Asia (Issue 7 July 2014)

47Packaging Technology

“Producing labels for cans is very challenging, because it is a one-sided, 80gsm, uncoated paper. In other words, it is soft,” Teng said. “Originally we were doing offset print and then have it cut. We have since swapped them around with flexo instead. It is actually more efficient and faster. If the flexo machine is stable and the registration is good, the layman can’t really see the difference.”

Rotamag Flexographic presses are produced by the Rotary Engineering, which has manufacturing facilities in Australia and Thailand.

“One thing good about Rotary is that it’s a family-owned business. If I need something, I can just pick up my phone and get it. Unlike the bigger manufacturers, there is often a chain to go through,” said Teng.

Switching to flexo has also opened up a whole host of opportunities for Far

East: “Originally we did consider using flexo to produce packaging as well, but we’ve not gone there yet. I know

it’s possible. We don’t want to be stuck with just self-adhesive, we are trying to grow outwards.”

HP launched the new HP Latex 300 Printer series at HP APJ Media Summit 2014, Mumbai, India. The series aims to ease the transition from solvent printers for sign shops, quick printers and small to medium printing com-panies, to build a healthier production environment. Additionally, the Latex 300 printers will allow businesses to easily expand large-format printing capabilities and offer new application areas.

“The Latex business is becoming very important to HP. In five years we have basically built this whole new category, with over 19,000 units sold all over the world,” said Gido van Praag, vice president for the graphics solutions business, HP Asia Pacific. “We commit an investment of $200 million towards R&D in Latex.”

van Praag put forth an example of solvent farms in China, a common fixture in the country that demands a low-cost, high production environ-ment. He added that HP has managed to successfully transform one such farm in China, by replacing all its sol-vent printers with 40 printers from the Latex 300 series.

HP UNVEILS LATEX 300 SERIESThe new third-generation Latex series presents a move-

ment by HP to transform the world’s solvent printers. Sha

Jumari reports.

“This is possible with the third-generation Latex printers, which are industrial strength and have fully capa-ble, competent printing technology to make an impact in the market in a very profound way,” continued van Praag.

Small and medium printing compa-nies have long used traditional eco-sol-vent ink devices for outdoor print jobs, which lengthen turnaround times and limit application versatility. Powered by third-generation, water-based HP Latex ink technology, the HP Latex 300 Printer series helps low-volume customers efficiently handle more outdoor and indoor applications with improved durability and image quality.

“Small to medium printing compa-nies face the challenge of simultane-ously addressing more applications to reach more customers while reducing costs and fitting in smaller spaces,” said Puneet Chadha, director for graphics solutions business, HP Asia Pacific and Japan. “Backed by proven HP Latex Technology, the new HP Latex 300 Printer series addresses these needs with durable quality and easy opera-tion, helping customers break applica-tion boundaries and establish a com-petitive advantage.”

Helping customers transition more pages from solvent devices, HP 831 Latex Inks, offer scratch resistance comparable to hard solvent inks on PVC banners and vinyls, while the HP Latex Optimizer enables high quality at high speeds. Third-generation HP Latex inks also contribute to a healthier work environment with odorless prints that also come out completely dry, ready to finish and deliver.

More Sustainable Alternative to PVC Graphic Print FilmAvery Dennison introduced a range of digital and screen printing films that combine powerful graphics with a lower environmental impact. TrueImpact films give converters a more sustainable choice for indoor mid-term graphics applications.

The product line is currently available in six constructions, including a white multi-print film and the choice of a matt or gloss protective overlaminate.

Although PVC films are readily used in many graphic applications today, there are a growing number of customers looking for alternative materials that have an improved environmental health footprint across the manufacturing, use and disposal phase of the product lifecycle.

“A sustainability goal of ‘PVC out’ is now a priority for many end users and TrueImpact TMP 7000 / TOL 7000 series films allow converters to differentiate their offer and open up new business opportunities,” said Elizabeth Park, senior product manager, Avery Dennison.

The patented series TMP 7000 / TOL 7000 films are 100% free of PVC and phthalates, and deliver high-level performance. An easy-to-clean overlaminate resists graffiti and protects the material for up to five years in interior applications, and the

films will conform to both flat surfaces and simple curves.

Liners for the entire range are FSC- or SIF-certified, and the products are RoHS- and REACH- compliant. Compared with existing PVC films, sustainability benefits are 9% less energy use, 12% lower greenhouse gas emissions and 13% less solid waste. Park noted that “by offering an alternative with much lower environmental impact, converters can help their customers to meet sustainability obligations, and to prove that they have done so with Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) data.”

TrueImpact TMP 7000 / TOL 7000 series films limit stock holding and enable more design and colour choices because they suit latex, UV, eco-solvent, and solvent inkjet platforms, as well as screen printing. The new TrueImpact portfolio also meets the international standards for flame propagation on burning (EN13501-1 and ASTM-E 84), which is an important health and safety requirement in contained spaces such as public buildings and transport systems.

All TrueImpact materials are offered with the Avery Dennison Integrated Component System (ICS) warranty for individual projects.

Heidelberg realigns postpress portfolioAs announced, Heidelberger realigns its postpress portfolio. In-house production at the Heidelberg sites in Germany is no longer competitive under the new market conditions. The relevant operations are therefore being discontinued, except for production of folding machines at the Ludwigsburg site.

Postpress Packaging products and solutions will in future be developed and manufactured by the new Chinese OEM partner Masterwork Machinery Co., Ltd, with Heidelberg retaining responsibility for sales and service activities.

In the Postpress Commercial business area, Heidelberg will only continue to market the established folding machines and cutters. Swiss company Müller Martini will take over service activities for installed equipment from discontinued series. These measures will not affect business with Polar cutters and Heidelberg folding machines.

"We were able to win two renowned suppliers as partners for our realigned Postpress portfolio," said Stephan Plenz, Member of the Board, Heidelberg Equipment. "They will help us provide our customers with competitive products and ensure continuity in services and service parts."

The reduction of in-house capacities will result in the closure of the Leipzig site and a corresponding reduction in the workforce at the Ludwigsburg and Wiesloch-Walldorf sites. A total of around 650 employees worldwide will be affected.

Important step in optimizing portfolio to achieve target EBITDA margin of at least 8 percent in financial year 2015/2016 At its Annual Press Conference, Heidelberg announced the development of new business models for products with weak margins as part of its portfolio optimization.

"The competitiveness of postpress product lines at Heidelberg was limited, so these activities are being placed on an entirely new footing", said Heidelberg CEO Gerold Linzbach. "Realigning these areas is an important step in improving the company's economic situation and getting closer to the target EBITDA margin of at least 8 percent."
