1. The 27 bones of the human hand make for great flexibili-ty. The hand has 14 phalanges
2. Although most of the skull looks like one big bone, it ismade of 22 separate bones joined tightly together. 8bones protect the brain and are called the ‘cranial vault’.Another 14 bones make up the skeleton of the face. Anaverage adult human body contains 206 bones.Surprisingly a newborn baby has about 350! As a baby grows, some bones join together to make larg-er ones.
3. There are 12 pairs of ribs which shield the organs belowthem. Ribs are strong enough to protect the lungs, heart, liver etc. but light enough to move in and out as webreathe.
4. The horse has long, slender legs with slim bones whichtaper towards the foot. Each foot has only one long toecovered with a hard hoof made from the protein ‘ker-atin’. This structure keeps the legs as light as possible, making it easier for the horse to gallop fast.
See the ghost rider in the Skeletons Gallery.
2.
why do we need skeletons?
Skeletons are useful for support, movement, protection, blood cell production and calcium storage. There aretwo types of skeletons. Exoskeletons are outside thebody. Mostly, animals without backbones haveexoskeletons. Examples are insects, snails and crus-taceans. Endoskeletons are inside the body. Humansand many of the other creatures on display haveendoskeletons.

The endoskeleton has two main parts. The axial skeletonis the central column, made up of the skull, vertebrae(backbone), ribs and sternum (breastbone). The appendic-ular skeleton is made up of the bones of the arms and thelegs as well as the scapula (shoulder blade), clavicle (col-lar bone) and pelvis. In general, long bones in the limbsare like supporting beams and moveable levers. Wide flatbones in the shoulders and hips anchor large groups ofmuscles.

The sperm whale is found in allthe world's deep oceans, fromthe equator to the edges of thepolar pack ice.
Sperm whales are not built forspeed and usually travel at lessthan 7km per hour. They arethought to dive regularly todepths of 500m and have evenbeen found as far as 3kmbelow the surface and can stayunder water for up to 90 min-utes at a time.

Sperm Whale AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM 3
The sperm whale has the heaviestbrain of any living animal.
The head of a sperm whaleoccupies a quarter to one thirdof its body length. The whale’shead is full of an oily, waxysubstance called spermacetioil. A 30 tonne whale may haveup to 2.5 tonnes of oil in itshead. The exact function of theoil is not known, however itmay be used to adjust thewhale's buoyancy, helping it to
dive and then return to the sur-face. It is has also been sug-gested that the spermaceti oilmay act as a giant acousticlens that helps to focus clicks. These clicks are used in com-munication and could also beused in echo-location.
Many male sperm whales havescars on their heads, possiblyfrom battles with giant squid,an important prey item. A malesperm whale may eat morethan a tonne of squid a day.
