Anzenbacher, Pavel; Zanger, Urlich M. (eds.). Metabolism of drugs and other xenobiotics. Weinheim : Wiley-VHC, 2012.

A practice-oriented desktop reference for medical professionals, toxicologists and pharmaceutical researchers, this handbook provides systematic coverage of the metabolic pathways of all major classes of xenobiotics in the human body. The first part comprehensively reviews the main enzyme systems involved in biotransformation and how they are orchestrated in the body, while parts two to four cover the three main classes of xenobiotics: drugs, natural products, environmental pollutants. The part on drugs includes more than 300 substances from five major therapeutic groups (central nervous system, cardiovascular system, cancer, infection, and pain) as well as most drugs of abuse including nicotine, alcohol and "designer" drugs. Selected, well-documented case studies from the most important xenobiotics classes illustrate general principles of metabolism, making this equally useful for teaching courses on pharmacology, drug metabolism or molecular oxicology. Of particular interest, and unique to this volume is the inclusion of a wide range of additional xenobiotic compounds, including food supplements, herbal preparations, and agrochemicals.

Atkins, Peter William; de Paula, Julio; Smith, David. Elements of physical chemistry. 6th ed. Oxford : Oxford University Press, 2013. Elements of physical chemistry has been carefully developed to help readers increase their confidence when using physics and mathematics to answer fundamental questions about the structure of molecules, how chemical reactions take place, and why materials behave the way they do. The content is tightly focussed and well-matched to undergraduate courses, making it easy to find the information needed. Topics are covered in a clear, easy-to-follow style, using everyday examples to help students to visualise concepts and procedures that can otherwise seem very abstract. This edition sees further development of the learning features. These include Chemist's toolkits, which provide a reminder of mathematical techniques and introductory chemistry and physics needed to follow material in the chapters; worked examples providing step-by-step routes through problems; brief illustrations explaining how to use equations to calculate numerical values; and self-tests that allow students to check their understanding.

Atkins, Peter William; Jones, Loretta; Laverman, Leroy. Chemical principles : the quest for insight. 6th ed. New York : W. H. Freeman and Company, 2013. Written for calculus-inclusive general chemistry courses, Chemical principles helps students develop chemical insight by showing the connections between fundamental chemical ideas and their applications. Unlike other texts, it begins with a detailed picture of the atom then builds toward chemistry's frontier, continually demonstrating how to solve problems, think about nature and matter, and visualize chemical concepts as working chemists do. Flexibility in level is crucial, and is largely established through clearly labeling (separating in boxes) the calculus coverage in the text: Instructors have the option of whether to incorporate calculus in the coverage of topics.

Carlson, Robert H. Biology is technology : the promise, peril, and new business of engineering life. Cambridge, Mass. London : Harvard University Press, 2010. (SABRE donacija) Technology is a process and a body of knowledge as much as a collection of artifacts. Biology is no different--and we are just beginning to comprehend the challenges inherent in the next stage of biology as a human technology. It is this critical moment, with its wide-ranging implications, that Robert Carlson considers in Biology is technology. He offers a uniquely informed perspective on the endeavors that contribute to current progress in this area--the science of biological systems and the technology used to manipulate them. In a number of case studies, Carlson demonstrates that the development of new mathematical, computational, and laboratory tools will facilitate the engineering of biological artifacts--up to and including organisms and ecosystems. Exploring how this will happen, with reference to past technological advances, he explains how objects are constructed virtually, tested using sophisticated mathematical models, and finally constructed in the real world. Such rapid increases in the power, availability, and application of biotechnology raise obvious questions about who gets to use it, and to what end. Carlson's thoughtful analysis offers rare insight into our choices about how to develop biological technologies and how these choices will determine the pace and effectiveness of innovation as a public good.

Hall, John Edward; Kukolja Taradi, Sunčana. Andreis, Igor (ur. hrv. izd.). Medicinska fiziologija : udžbenik. 12. izd. Zagreb : Medicinska naklada, 2012. Takav način prikazivanja olakšava studentima razumijevanje složenih fizikalnih i kemijskih fizioloških procesa u tijelu.

Hillery, Anya M.; Lloyd, Andrew W.; Swarbrick, James (eds.). Drug delivery and targeting : for pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. Boca Raton : Taylor & Francis, 2001. The advances in biotechnology and molecular biology over recent years have resulted in a large number of novel molecules with the potential to revolutionize the treatment and prevention of disease. However, such potential is severely compromised by significant obstacles to delivery of these drugs in vivo. These obstacles are often so great that effective drug delivery and targeting is now recognized as the key to effective development of many therapeutics. Advanced drug delivery and targeting can offer significant advantages to conventional drugs, such as increased efficiency, convenience, and the potential for line extensions and market expansion. An accessible and easy-to-read textbook, Drug delivery and targeting for pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists is the first book to provide a comprehensive introduction to the principles of advanced drug delivery and targeting, their current applications and potential future developments.

Kalenić, Smilja i suradnici. Medicinska mikrobiologija. Zagreb : Medicinska naklada, 2013. Autori i urednik bit će zadovoljni ako studenti udžbenik budu smatrali korisnim i pomogne im u kasnijem proučavanju patogeneze, dijagnostike, liječenja i prevencije zaraznih bolesti.

Kovač, Zdenko i suradnici. Klinička patofiziologija : etiopatogenetski čvorovi. 4 sveska. Zagreb : Medicinska naklada, 2013. Etiološki heterogene bolesti dovode do zajedničkih križnih patogenetskih točaka – etiopatogenetskih čvorova u kojima se putovi integriraju, pokreću novi procesi, aktiviraju dijelovi homeostatičke regulacije itd.

Landecker, Hannah. Culturing life : how cells became technologies. London : Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Mass., 2007. (SABRE donacija) How did cells make the journey, one we take so much for granted, from their origin in living bodies to something that can be grown and manipulated on artificial media in the laboratory, a substantial biomass living outside a human body, plant, or animal? This is the question at the heart of Hannah Landecker's book. She shows how cell culture changed the way we think about such central questions of the human condition as individuality, hybridity, and even immortality and asks what it means that we can remove cells from the spatial and temporal constraints of the body and "harness them to human intention." Rather than focus on single discrete biotechnologies and their stories--embryonic stem cells, transgenic animals--Landecker documents and explores the wider genre of technique behind artificial forms of cellular life. She traces the lab culture common to all those stories, asking where it came from and what it means to our understanding of life, technology, and the increasingly blurry boundary between them. The technical culture of cells has transformed the meaning of the term "biological," as life becomes disembodied, distributed widely in space and time. Once we have a more specific grasp on how altering biology changes what it is to be biological, Landecker argues, we may be more prepared to answer the social questions that biotechnology is raising.

Picher, Maryse; Boucher, Richard C. (eds.) Purinergic regulation of respiratory diseases. New York : Springer, 2011.

We proudly present the first book to integrate all aspects of purinergic signaling in the respiratory system. The first chapters introduce basic notions of purinergic pharmacology and metabolism, which allows readers from all scientific backgrounds to fully grasp the importance of these signaling networks for airway defenses, including mucociliary clearance and inflammatory responses. Then, chapters are devoted to the groundbreaking discovery that chronic respiratory diseases, including asthma, cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), present specific aberrances in purinergic signaling which essentially drive lung complications. The last chapters describe the animal models used to investigate purinergic signaling in respiratory diseases, and the therapeutic applications developed by the pharmaceutical industry based on receptor agonists/antagonists and metabolic correctors. This highly comprehensive manuscript constitutes an invaluable tool for beginners and experts to follow the rapidly evolving research field of purinergic signaling. Furthermore, the critical analysis of past clinical protocols should facilitate the identification of potent therapeutic targets, and provide a better understanding of the data acquired in current clinical trials.

Samuelsson, Gunnar; Bohlin, Lars. Drugs of natural origin : a treatise of pharmacognosy. 6th rev. ed. Stockholm : Apotekarsocieteten, 2009. Drugs of natural origin provides a multidisciplinary approach suitable for those working in the area of natural product development. It brings together research on the sustainable use of natural products in the development of new drugs, scientifically based herbal remedies, and environmentally adapted biomolecules. This book examines terrestrial and marine bioactive substances drawn from plant, microbial, and animal origin. Their occurrence, biosynthesis, isolation, chemistry, and medical use are described, together with basic research strategies. Development in the field of natural products of medical importance continues to expand. Since the publication of the 5th edition of this book, five years ago, new concepts such as chemo- and bioinformatics, phylogenetics and systems biology with the new ”omics” techniques (genomics, proteomics and metabolomics) have emerged. Herbal remedies have become subject to more rigid legislation aiming to improve their quality and efficacy, both as over-the-counter preparations for self-medication and as constituents of conventional drugs. This development is reflected in a substantial revision and expansion of the book. This edition also describes many new drugs marketed since the publication of the previous edition.

Testa, Bernard; Krämer, Stephanie D. The biochemistry of drug metabolism : volume 2 : conjugations, consequences of metabolism, influencing factors. Zürich : Verlag Helvetica Chimica Acta, Wiley-VCH, 2010. Volume two contains the last four parts of this work. Part 4 is devoted to the huge field of conjugation reactions, with much information being given on transferases. As in the two preceding parts, each drug-metabolizing enzyme or enzyme family begins with an Enzyme Identity Card summarizing its nomenclature and biochemical essentials. The reactions examined here include methylation, sulfation, glucuronidation, acetylation, conjugation with glutathione, while there is also a rigorous presentation of the pivotal role of xenobiotic-coenzyme A conjugates as a crossroads to various metabolic reactions. The next part examines the consequences of drug and xenobiotic metabolism in a pharmacological and toxicological perspective, with due attention paid to full activation, as is found with prodrugs, and to the worrying case of xenobiotic toxification. Parts 6 and 7 cover the inter-individual and intra-individual factors that influence drug metabolism, starting with an introduction to evolutionary events leading to species differences in the metabolism of xenobiotics and to polymorphisms within a particular species. Focusing on humans, the most relevant polymorphic drug-metabolizing enzymes are discussed, concentrating on ethnic differences and on the consequences for the pharmacokinetic behavior of affected drugs, while also introducing sex-dependent metabolic reactions. The final part introduces the mechanisms leading to increases or decreases in enzyme activities as the concept of enzyme induction via nuclear receptors and the different mechanisms of enzyme inhibition are explained. With these basics in mind, various influencing factors are discussed, including physiological and pathological conditions, as well as drugs, nutrients and environmental agents with a special focus on drug-drug interactions.

Testa, Bernard; Krämer, Stephanie D. The biochemistry of drug metabolism : volume 1 : principles, redox reactions, hydrolyses. Zürich : Verlag Helvetica Chimica Acta, Wiley-VCH, 2008. The first of the two volumes is divided into three parts. Part One begins by introducing xenobiotics in the broad context of physiological metabolism, and continues with an overview of the processes of drug disposition and metabolism. It then goes on to summarize the macroscopic and microscopic locations of drug metabolism in animals and humans. This is followed by an introduction to the all-important issue of the consequences of drug and xenobiotic metabolism, providing an initial overview of pharmacokinetic, pharmacological and toxicological consequences. The last chapter examines drug metabolism in the context of drug research, with a focus on medicinal chemistry. The second part is a major component of the book, corresponding to the role of oxidoreductases as major agents of metabolism. Cytochromes P450 receive particular attention, namely their multiplicity, structure, catalytic mechanisms, and the various reactions they catalyze, while other oxidoreductases are also presented, such as flavin monooxygenases, monoamine oxidases and other amine oxidases, aldehyde oxidase and xanthine dehydrogenase, peroxidases, and dehydrogenases-reductases. Each drug-metabolizing enzyme or enzyme family begins with an Enzyme Identity Card summarizing its nomenclature and biochemical essentials. Part Three begins with a survey of the classification, properties and catalytic mechanism of the innumerable hydrolases known or suspected to play a role in xenobiotic metabolism. The focus then shifts to a systematic presentation of the various substrate classes, namely carboxylic esters, amides and peptides, lactams and lactones, esters of inorganic acids, alkene and arene epoxides, and some miscellaneous hydrolyzable moieties.
