CODY SCHOOL FEBRUARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS
The snow has kept the PANTHERS indoors for Physical Education
classes the past month or more. We are all getting a little tired of the
confines of the gym for PE and indoor recesses. Hopefully our
upcoming curriculum will keep us happy until warmer weather
arrives!
The big event for February is always the district wide JUMP ROPE for HEART events in the grade and middle schools. February is National
Heart month and CODY SCHOOL will have our JUMP ROPE for HEART on Thursday, February 17th during your child’s regular PE
time. Last year Cody School raised $407 towards this worthy cause, with 19 students raising money. Ruthie Hopkins (4th) raised the
most last year with $58. If our school raises $1000, we get a $100 gift certificate from US Games for new physical education equipment.
In addition, if 30 or more students raise money online through the JUMP ROPE for HEART website, we get another $100 gift certificate.
This method is much easier than going door-to-door (not encouraged) or hitting up friends, relatives and/or neighbors for donations. It’s
easy-I will send a packet home with your child next week explaining
JUMP ROPE for HEART!!
Cody School will get the district’s Tumbling Mats in February. We do
so many different things with the mats-tumbling, animal movements, pyramids, locomotor activities and Hide and Seek. I have noticed
many students wearing their snow boots to gym. Although they are safer than stockings or barefoot, I am sure they are uncomfortable
and not as safe or good as tennis shoes. Moreover, they leave black marks all over our gym floor. So if you could please send some
tennies with your student it will be much appreciated! Until next time-remember-you’re not fully educated until you’re
physically educated!
Mr. Allberry

Ice Cream Party
During bingo night, Bennett Magnuson earned
Miss Hellbusch’s class an ice cream party by getting a
Blackout. We thoroughly enjoyed it!
Bennett
Third graders are headed into another month of learning . . . we have covered many concepts so far this
year with many more things to learn.
Our focus for reading in January and February is
working on our thinking strategy of inferring. We are realizing we do a lot of inferring on our own and we are
now pinpointed why we think the way we do. We are practicing our reading by tying in all our strategies to
become better readers.
We have learned the processes of multiplication and
division and have begun working on the memorization of multiplication facts as we move on to new concepts. We will be learning about whole and parts of fractions,
equivalent fractions, and comparing/ordering fractions. We will also continue to work on telling time to the
minute.
In Science, we will be starting our rocks and minerals
unit. We will practice using some of the field tests that
real geologists use to identify
minerals.
We are encouraging all of our students to spend time
at home nightly reading, writing, or working on their math
facts. With continued practice, their skills will only
improve!
During the fourth week in January students in grades 4, 8, and 11, across the state of Ne-braska, participated in the Nebraska Statewide Writing Assessment. 4th graders here at Cody School were among the students who wrote using a narrative prompt. The students seemed very confident and ready since they had completed many practice runs for this with many different writing prompts during their regular Language Arts classes. After the two day test of planning, writing a rough draft, revising, editing, and writing a final copy students were relieved to know it was over even though they felt as if it were "a walk in the park", "easy", and "no biggie". Now the students are anxiously awaiting the results. Since we have spent so much time on writing in English and many of the other subjects, we are expecting to score very well! The tests are sent away to be scored by professional evaluators. We hope to have the final scores back in early May.
4th Grade News
Taking a Bite Out of Nebraska
Students are literally "eating up" what they are learning in Social Studies. After studying about the regions, rivers, and important cities of Nebraska the students decorated a cookie to show what they had learned. They used various toppings to represent the different features of our state. Green coconut for the Grasslands, chocolate chips for the Badlands, and licorice strips for the rivers were just a few of the yummy toppings that covered the cookies.
What better way to recycle our Christmas trash, than to use it for a school project? The stu-dents in Mrs. Walters' 4th grade class brought in fifteen 60 gallon trash bags full of Christmas boxes, styrofoam, plastic, wire ties, screws, bags, and more. They were paired together to de-vise a useful creation from the materials. And oh, what creations we had! From a robot named Sally that could do your chores and schoolwork to a catapult that shoots snow. We had a wait-ress ordering and serving tray to a carry-out dinner. The students had fun sorting, planning, constructing, and presenting their inventions, and working as a team.
Who would have thought that learning about color could be so delicious. Mrs. Walters 4th graders took a bite out of Art as they learned more about the color wheel and how colors are created. The students used their primary colors of red, blue, and yellow to make the secondary and tertiary colors from frosting. Smothered on vanilla wafers, the colors added a rainbow of possibilities to our art.
Watch out Walmart...Here we come.
Students in the 4th grade have been learning about the steps in Agriculture during Social Stud-ies. They have recently studied the Marketing step, where they completed a project of creating a new food product. The students packaged and advertised their new concoction and presented it to the class. Some of them brought their new product in to share. A few of the new products that the students invented were: Chocolate Coconut Jello, Chocolate Covered Gum, Pickled Cook-ies, Sandwiches on a Stick, Bacon Ice cream, and so many more. Look for our new products at a store near you!
The 4th grade is finishing their Motion and Design unit with making hovercrafts. The CDs were donated by the North Platte Schools Tech Department, ThankYou!

Great Job, they look great. Looks like you had a lot of fun creating these!!
January 25, 2011 Dear Parents, Your child will begin a study of Family Life in the health class beginning on Monday, February 7, 2011. You are the first educators of your children. You provide them with their primary under-standing of gender roles, relationships, and beliefs. The family sets the framework for all other sexuality education efforts. It is the goal of educators in the North Platte Public School to provide current, accurate information to students in the area of health educa-tion. The objectives of the Family Life unit are: *To understand that every family member and individual have worth and value. *To understand that we need to accept and value people as they are. *To develop and understand that every person is unique and parents make a genetic contribution. *To know the correct terms for the male and female reproductive systems. *To understand how a woman and man create a baby. The students will view a film, ―EVERTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT PUBERTY: BOYS‖ (only boys will view this video with Mr. Collins and Principal Mike McPherron) and ―EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT PUBERTY: GIRLS‖ (only girls will view this video with Mrs. Walters and School Nurse Cheryl Jewel). These videos will be shown to the students during the above mentioned week. A question and answer time will follow each video. The book ―HOW YOU WERE BORN‖ by Margaret Miller will be read and discussed. This book focuses on sperm and egg uniting to form a baby, development of the baby, and how a baby is born. As a parent, you may wish to clarify or elaborate on questions that your child may ask at home. This would be an appropriate time to discuss and reinforce your personal and family beliefs associated with the Family Life unit. If you would like to preview the video and/or book, please contact me before February 7, 2011. Please call me at school if you have any concerns or questions. Sincerely,____________________________________Health and Science Teacher

4th Grade News
5th grade news from Mr. Andre-Henn
I will be sending home mid-term grade reports on
Monday, February 7th. The quarter ends March 4th. Please be looking for these reports and
return the signed half page by February 11th. As a reminder, students may correct any errors on their work (except for quizzes and tests) for an average of their two grades. A few students take advantage of this, but not many, even though I
continually remind them of this option.
In social studies, we have finished the Regions book and the first unit of the United States book on colonial life. We will be starting a unit leading up to the Revolutionary War. In math, we have finished graphing and are getting ready for fractions. In reading, we have been reading the book Hatchet, and for a treat will be watching the movie after we finish. In English we are writing tall tales and will then start a unit on adjectives.
We just finished our standardized tests, MAPS, in reading, language arts, and math. In next next couple of months, students will be taking their second year of the NESA Reading test and then the first year of the NESA math test.
Hopefully, next month will be warmer.
Cody's fifth graders participated in a grade level spelling bee last week. The 8 contestants were Amberlynn Reed, Tenesha Lee, Teagan Lovelace, Jensen Crow, Jason Ezell, Emilio Ramos, Maddie Neyhart, and Shalee Taylor. After several rounds, the runner up is Jensen Crow, with the winner being Jason Ezell! Congratulations to all of these students for participating in this exciting event. Jason and Jensen will move on to our district spelling bee, which will be held on February 11. Good luck gentlemen!
Congratulations!!!!
2nd Annual Talent Show
Friday, February 11th, 2011
7:00 p.m.
Come and see the many talented students we have at Cody
School.
Thank you to everyone who came out and made Bingo Night a huge success. We had over 150 people come out and enjoy the night. Plenty of desserts and prizes made the evening a great time.
The last game of the night was Blackout and the student that won would receive an Ice Cream Party
for their classroom. Bennett Magnuson in Miss Hellbusch’s class was the winner. Great job Bennett.
Thanks again to all our teachers who came and helped with checking cards.
Thanks to Wal-Mart for the ―Cuties‖ donated that we were able to give away to those who came.
We appreciate all the support of our Cody Families and the great kids we have here. Thanks again!!!!!
