Principles of Government Activity Task: Begin by reviewing the 6 principles of government found in the Constitution below: Next, study the twelve political cartoons and answers the questions for each of the cartoons. Note, each of the 6 principles of government should be used 2x. Pay attention to any words or captions contained in the cartoon as well as the size and scale of objects. Cartoonists like to skew objects in order to help make their point. Something large may show power and strength. This could be good or bad depending on the action. Answer all 12 items on your iPad by annotating using your preferred app. Finally, you will make 2 Blog entry titled Principles of Government 1 and Principles of Government 2. In writing these blog posts, you are to go websites like: www.cnn.com, www.foxnews.com, www.nytimes.com, or any other news site of interest and select a recent article (since Sept. 1, 2014) that you can apply one of the principles of government (see above) to accurately. This is similar to the blog posts that you did last month on purposes of government. In writing your blog posts, summarize the content of the article in a paragraph…I should be able to gather the basics of the story (who, what, where, when, why, how) in this part. Then in the second paragraph, tell how your article demonstrates one of the four principles of government. Be sure to name the principle of government at work in your story. Remember to cite your source at the end of your blog post and to include a picture. Then repeat with a different story that meets a different principle of government. Note: You may do a third principle of government blog post for extra credit as long as it is a new principle that you are applying with a different cited article. Federalism - power is divided among the states and the national government. Separation of Powers – power is divided into 3 branches of government (Executive, Legislative, and Judicial). Checks and Balances - The power of each branch of government is checked or limited and balanced by powers held by other branches. Limited Government – The government cannot do certain things; this protects against the abuse of power Rule of Law every citizen is subject to the law no matter what their position is Popular Sovereignty Rule by the people
