Principles of Design
Principles of Design The principles of design are artistic
guidelines for using the elements of design.
Balance The space on either side of a central,
imaginary line appear equal
Balance- Symmetrical When the spaces
on each side of a garment are exactly the same.
Balance- Asymmetrical When the spaces
on each side of the garments are not exactly the same, but are still balanced.
Proportion Describes how individual parts of a
garment relate to each other and the whole outfit.• In fashion, the 3:5 ratio is commonly used.
In the average body, 3/8 of the body is above the waistline, while 5/8 is below the waistline.
Clothing looks best when it’s in proportion to your body.
Emphasis The focal point of a
design. It can be used to highlight your best features and draw attention away from body problem. • The emphasis can be
done with color, line, texture, design details, trim and accessories.
Rhythm Movement carries
the eye through a regular pattern produced by design elements.
There are three types of rhythm …
Repetition A pattern repeats,
as with rows of stripes
Radiation Lines or patterns
flow from a central location, like gathers in a skirt.
Gradation A pattern changes gradually, as in a
change of size or color.
Harmony The design elements complement
each other. They create a unified theme, and
each part looks like it fits.
