THE ART PRINCIPLE OF HARMONYHARMONYRefers to a way of combining similarities. Visualharmony is achieved when all of the artelements within a work of art blend together ona pleasant, comprehensive, and unified whole.A harmonious work of art might use onlyorganic or only geometric shapes and lines tocreate a unified composition. Using all cool or allwarm colors would help to produce a harmoniouswork of art.

Page 4: Principle of arts

Unity is the hallmark of a good design. It's the final result in a composition when all the design elements work harmoniously together giving the viewer a satisfying sense of belonging and relationship.

THE ART PRINCIPLE OF BALANCEThis refers to the

way in which visual weight is

distributed throughout a composition.

Compositions can display either symmetrical,

or radial balance.

Symmetrical Balance

Balance refers to a compositionin which the visual weight isperfectly and evenly distributedeach side of the artwork.A symmetrical composition canbe divided down the center andeach side will be close to a mirror image of the other.

Asymmetrical Balance

Balance refers to thosecompositions in which thevisual weight is not evenlydistributed to both sides of

thework of art. Asymmetricalartworks will have dominantside in which the majority of

thevisual weight is placed.

Radial

Balance occurs when objects are

Positioned around a central point. The

daisy, with its petals radiating from the

center of the flower, is a good example.

Notice how the stained-glass window

was designed using radial balance.

THE ART PRINCIPLE OF RHYTHMRhythm refers to the use of visual repetitionwithin a work of art. Repeating visual

elementscan create visual energy and interest.Rhythm can also be referred to as pattern.Patterns within an artwork are created byrepeating certain colors, line or shapes inspecific areas. Rhythm can be used to createtexture and variety within a work of art

THE ART PRINCIPLE OF VARIETYVariety is a way of combining elements

ininvolved ways to create intricate andcomplicated relationships. Variety isaccomplished by using differing lines,

shapes, and colors within an artwork to make

key areasstand out.

THE ART PRINCIPLE OF MOVEMENT

Movement refers to how the designs direct our

eyes when looking at it. It does not refer to adepiction of movement within an artwork.Because of this, movement can be referred

to as visual movement. An artist creates visual movement to drive

the eye to the focal point of the artwork.

Page 18: Principle of arts

Movement is the path our eyes follow when we look at a work of art. The purpose of movement is to create unity in the artwork with eye travel.

THE ART PRINCIPLE OF EMPHASIS

Emphasis refers to the need of an artist tocreate a focal point within a composition. Thefocal point is the most important part of a workof art and the viewer’s eye should be drawn tothat area. The point that is emphasized is the part of thepainting, drawing, or sculpture that the artistfeels is the most important. In a portrait, the focal point will almost always be the eyes of the subject. Using a contrasting colors can also

help to\emphasize a focal point.

Page 21: Principle of arts

Emphasis is the stressing of a particular area of focus

Page 22: Principle of arts

In this painting it is easy to see how the artist used light to emphasize the chef. He stands out as the main focal point of the entire the painting.

THE ART PRINCIPLE OF PROPORTION

Proportion is concerned with the relationship of

certain elements to the whole and to each

other. Artist must make sure that the relative

sizes of items within a composition make

logical sense.

Harmony

Good Harmony

Lack Harmony

The shape of one part should “fit” the shape of its adjoining elements
