18th July 2017 #22 Dear Parents This week we welcome a group of 38 students from our Sister School Ningbo Haishu Foreign Language School in Zhejiang Province China. The students are spending a week in Cairns and 4 days at our school. The students have been communicating with Year 5 students in Ms Hamlyn’s class. As preparation for the visit our students have produced several videos which they have exchanged with the students from Haishu Foreign Language School. Over the next few weeks we will have visits from several schools in Japan as well as our Sister Schools In Yoshida. Later this term we will be inviting expressions of interest from students in Year 4 and 5 who wish to join our study tour to Yoshida in September 2018. Congratulations to our Year 5 students who had a very successful camp to Mungalli Falls last week. A very special thanks to the Year 5 teachers for their commitment and in particular to Ms Archer who was responsible for organising the camp. Thanks also to the parent volunteers who assisted to make the camp such a memorable experience. This week we have been holding the first round of interviews for Prep in 2018. If you have a child who will be starting Prep in 2018 and have not filled in an expression of interest it is important to do so as soon as possible. Children who live in our catchment area or who have a sibling at our school are entitled to enrol other children will be considered if there are vacancies. Please contact the Office for further information. Our Great Family Fete is only a few weeks away and we need your help to make it a success. The newsletter has information about how you can help. Mums and Dads who are able to assist on Fete Day are needed. Please check with your child’s teacher to see how you can help on the class activity or contact Yvonne on [email protected]. We can never have enough helpers; please don’t be shy and even an hour of your time is a great help. A reminder that Friday of this week is a public holiday for the Cairns Show. International Connections At Edge Hill we are fortunate to have working relationships with many different countries and cultures. PREP The Prep students settled back into our school routines very well last week. It was lovely to see the happy, smiling faces that wanted to be back learning at Edge Hill State School. Please make sure your child has a hat at school each day. The school rule is 'No hat, No play' and students that do not have a hat have to sit out in an undercover area at play times. It is also very important to make sure your child has a water bottle at school every day. Now that we are in the second half of Prep, your child should be unpacking their own bag every morning, putting their lunch in the fridge and organising their own belongings. A big part of Prep is organisation skills and preparing your child to be independent ready for Grade One. Please support your class teacher by encouraging your child to unpack their own school bag each morning.

YEAR 1 Hello families, we are back in full learning swing now learning and laughing lots! Our Health unit is generating lots of interest from the children so if you can assist with the request for photos and information, sent home last week, we can continue to share our pictures and stories. It's great fun! We're hoping we can please have your help with items for our school fete - 2nd hand toys, books etc. as well as donations of prizes that can be used for the big range of games and competitions on the night. Please see the orange newsletter for more details. Thanks so much, your Year 1 teachers.

YEAR 2 With the fete fast approaching it is time to start thinking about the Year 2 Cake Stall. This year we are encouraging donations of whole cakes. So get your cookbooks out and start searching for some delicious recipes. Some suggestions are banana, carrot, caramel, date and chocolate. Cake boxes will be sent home closer to the fete date.

YEAR 3 The Year Three children are excited about their upcoming excursion to Rainforest Station in week 3. See your classroom teacher if you would like to attend. Please be aware that there are limited placings for parents in each class. Extra parents are welcome to attend at their own cost. The children should bring a packed lunch, water bottle and snack. They are also encouraged to bring $5 spending money as Rainforest Station grows and harvests their own fruit. It is a wonderful chance for the children to try some interesting tropical fruit and work on their mathematical skills.

YEAR 6

A great start to the new term! The current unit of English has been introduced and involves a study of two stories by the same Australian author, Elizabeth Honey. Classes began reading the first book, "Don't Pat the Wombat" and are enjoying it. The Reading Challenge has also begun, so please encourage your child to take part and fill in those stepping stones! The first Rock Eisteddfod practice with the Cairns State High School was on last Friday and by all accounts, the Year Sixers stepped up to embrace their new experience! We certainly may see some hidden dance talent unveiled! Remember our Fete is fast approaching- Year Six are running the curry and kebab stall AND we need your help!! Keep on eye out for updates on how you can assist.

Lost Property Lost property bins are

located outside the school office. These bins will be emptied

each Friday. Anything with names will be given back to the child—the rest

will be donated to Life Line.

I am very much looking forward to the 9th and 10th August (Wednesday and Thursday) as they will be the first days of Term 3 STEMtastic Academy. At the moment there are still 15 students who have not returned their enrolment forms. If you keen to be part of the STEMtastic Crew this Term, leave your details at the Office or email [email protected] and I will return enrolment forms and information ASAP. Hurry because only limited spaces remain for this Term. Science Week is rapidly approaching – 14th 18th August. The theme is “Future Earth”. There is a variety of activities being offered in Cairns that week: The Flecker Botanical Gardens Science in the Tropics Rocks, Tank Arts PechaKucha and Griffith University STEM Roadshow (Aug 1) will certainly be highlights. One activity I am keen to promote is the Great Australian Biodiversity Challenge https://questagame.com/great-aussie-bio-challenge/ All you have to do is: 1. Download an app “Questagame”, for either Apple or Android phones. Register with your home, not school email. Students, please have parent permission. 2. Take your phone into the backyard or maybe go for a bushwalk. Stay safe! You have around 50km of radius from the botanical gardens, so don’t venture too far a wat from home. 3. When you of spot a native animals and or plant, a. Open Questagame, go to “New Sighting”. b. Take the photo – (must be pretty clear, not blurry). c. Add the species name (look it up online using the cool search function), category and location. d. Submit the sighting on the app. Continue questing and recording data on your mobile phone or help others identify their sightings. 4. Once you have a few sightings recorded, go computer, open the Great Australian Biodiversity Challenge at the link above or google it. 5. Register using your Questagame email. Join the Flecker Botanical Gardens – Cairns Qld Team. Your sightings will automatically contribute to the biodiversity data being collected on our local area. I am looking forward to seeing many new photos appearing on the site as we near Science Week. Best of luck.

There are still a lot of outstanding borrowed performing arts shirts that need to come back to the Music department. The final day to have them returned is this Friday and phone calls will be made home to remind families. It is really important that these shirts are returned please. Year 6 Instrumental students that are playing from their second book will be bringing home a note about the annual Cairns Primary Instrumental Music Camp which happens later this term. This year there are 2 guest conductors as well as the fabulous choral experience. All reply slips need to be returned back to Mr Christo, Mr McMenamin, Mr B or Miss Curtis please. The Lion King Jr rehearsals have started with a bang and thankyou everyone for giving 100%. Mrs Blakeley and Miss Curtis have been really impressed how quickly students have picked up the songs and movements. Please remind students to check the music room window every week for rehearsals that happen at lunch times as well as a reminder for the after school rehearsals. A reminder that Friday school is closed for the Cairns Show holiday so there will be no Year 3 string lessons on this day. All other instrumental lessons, orchestras and bands are on as normal this week.

Reading Challenge The Edge Hill Reading Challenge begins this week in celebration of this year’s Book Week

theme ‘Escape to Everywhere.’ Each child will receive a colourful journey map in which stepping stones mark each 20 minutes of reading with a parent’s initials. There are

challenges and rewards to be earned along the way and many escape

destinations to be reached. Take time to enjoy and talk about where each book you read together takes

you. Enjoy your escape!
