Our Junior Next Steps evening has been revamped with the introduction of the new timetable and the advent of our Kaiarahi. This year, each student and parent will have a single 20 minute meeting with the Kaiarahi. The discussion will centre around the student’s goals, their learning engagement, and where to find and how to interpret information regarding both standardised tests as well as subject specific learning, progress and achievement. Please note that Senior Next Steps will continue to be with subject teachers as normal. The meetings will take place next Thursday 23 March from 2:30 - 6:00pm. School will finish at 1:50pm, with buses running from that time. Parents are asked to schedule an appointment with the Kaiarahi using the School Interviews website (www.schoolinterviews.co.nz) using the code ecz5a This is a really important evening for all Junior students and parents and we do expect all to attend. If you or your child are unable to attend on the evening, please email your child’s Kaiarahi directly to arrange another meeting time.

Duke of Edinburgh: Training Day Last Saturday saw 42 Duke of Edinburgh students sitting their training day at school. Prior to undertaking their practice journey, students needed to demonstrate sufficient competency in the skills required such that they could undertake the journey safely. Thanks to the instructors students learnt all about the skills necessary to become independent in the outdoors on an overnight hike such as: camp-craft, trip planning, map reading, route finding, equipment and packing a bag-pack, health and safety and the list goes on and on... Tents were pitched, lunches were eaten on stoves and it seems that students are gearing up for their practice journey which will take place on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th of March. At the conclusion of the training day students thanked all instructors and staff involved: Brian Hall, Paul Mountain, Guillaume Charton and Penny Hearn.

Bonjour! My name is Elsie, and I am a Year 13 student who is in love with the French language. When first discussing the Swiss exchange with Mr Charton about this time last year, I could not have foreseen just how incredible the experience would be. Though in saying that, two months of French immersion in the wee land of cheese, chocolate and alpine skiing kinda gives you SOME idea. Over the winter of 2016, my family hosted Garance Martig from Switzerland. She attended school here at Wakatipu for a term, intermingled by many adventures. After saying “Au Revoir,” I spent the following three months in suspense until finally after exams, I boarded my flight with 22 other exchangees en route to southern Switzerland, Europe. My hometown was called Sion, located in the heart of the Swiss Alps. Whilst there, I went to their senior high school, ate their food (which consisted of cheese, cheese, and more cheese), had my first white Christmas, met some of the coolest people, became part of Garance’s family, and thanks to their efforts - saw some pretty spectacular places, which you can get a glimpse of in my short summary video (click here). After a very blubbery goodbye to everybody who had made our stay special, the NZ students then took the bullet train to Paris France, for a further four incredible nights before having to be dragged onto our 24hr flight home via stopover at Universal Studios, Singapore. All-inclusive I would like to thank Monsieur Charton and the school for this formidable opportunity. And to anyone reading this, I can only attest that the process of learning another language is beyond enlightening, as I witnessed first hand how your mind can be expanded through introduction to a different culture. In conclusion, for those of you who are defiantly monolingual, it is never too late to pick something up, so just step forward and do it. Merci beaucoup et bonne journée! :) Elsie Anderson

Representing Wakatipu High School with pride at the annual Russell McVeagh Debating Competition were six students last weekend, ready with refill in hand to write down some bullet points. Wakatipu A consisted of Bianca Crichton (3rd speaker), Maddie Jones (2nd speaker) and Leah Kissick (1st speaker and LR). Wakatipu B was made up of Henry McIntyre (1st speaker and LR), Lyndi Matthews (2nd speaker) and Nik Rooney (3rd speaker). With four of these amazing people in Fox House and two in Hay House, the clash between Fox and Hay come House Debating will be one to look out for. Both teams showed excellent form when put up against some of Otago’s finest, debating on topics ranging from New Zealand signing free trade deals with undemocratic countries to the weighing up of the harm versus good of patriotism. When faced with what some would define as failure, we saw it as an opportunity to show resilience, taking feedback in our stride to improve and reach for out heights. Wakatipu A and B both won 40% of the debates and Bianca picked up the honourable title of Best Speaker in one of the debates! A big thank you to Miss Harris for the significant role she played in getting the teams to Dunedin (and back again), with her behind the scenes work on the RAMs forms also noted. GUIDING YOUR CHILD TOWARDS A SUCCESSFUL FUTURE Talking Careers with your child – research tells us that parents are a major influence. The greatest gift that a wise parent can give is HOPE in the future and FAITH in their child’s ability to have a happy future. Talking careers with your child is best when you're both relaxed – choose a good time. The key word is ‘comfortable’ – conversations about careers should never be tense, intense, impatient or controlling. 1. Start with general talk about their school day, or their sports and

hobbies. 2. Ask questions about what subjects they like, their interests, personal

values and what they think they're good at. 3. Give positive feedback and explore your child's answers. Would your

child like a career that is related to their favourite subjects or interests? 4. If your child has a dream in mind, talk more about this dream. What

does your child know about how to get this career? 5. Discuss what your child wants from their career. Attitudes towards

money, security or self-development may help to identify career options. 6. If your child is unsure, reassure them by saying you believe in them, and

help them to research options. Refer to role models Young people need inspiration from those who they admire. Talk about your experience of choosing a career, or talk about how family members, friends, community leaders or famous people found the careers for them. What to avoid Don’t impose your ideas - instead ask questions to clarify an issue. For

example, “This is a desk job, but you said that you would like to meet different people all the time. Does that matter?”

Don't discourage your child with comments such as "That's not right for you". This will push them away. Instead, explore the reasoning behind their career decision, and help them find out for themselves if it is the right choice.

Don't push the conversation if your child is not responding, try another time instead. It's also good to let your child know that you're always available to talk if they need you.

Good times to talk careers - There are many opportunities in the course of everyday life for you to start career conversations with your child: In the car The car can be a less intense place to have a career chat. Questions you could ask: "If you could do any job in the world, what would it be?" "What would you like to do after you finish school?“ Watching TV Some TV shows are great for talking about careers. For example: Police Ten 7: "Wow, the police have to deal with some difficult people. I'm not sure I could do that job. What do you think?" Shortland Street: "I think this show gives you the wrong idea about what doctors and nurses actually do. I think everyone interested in these jobs should do some real-life work experience." Border Control: "I wonder what you need to do to become a dog handler?“ Over a meal Your child may not want to talk careers at dinner time. Talk about your own experiences or observations to start the conversation - you don't have to talk about your child's situation, you can start with yourself or someone else. "The kid next door is starting an apprenticeship in carpet laying next year. I wonder how he got that idea?" "My parents talked me into being a teacher, but I would rather have tried landscaping. Hey, I might still do that!" "It can be scary to think you have to do the same job all your life. I know a lot of people who managed to do well after changing careers. Some have tried several different jobs.“ Playing sport or doing outdoor activities You may not want to spoil quality time with your children by bringing up career or training plans. Instead, some possible starters for conversations could be: "Wouldn't it be great to have a job outdoors? Especially on a day like today." "Being sporty helps make up for spending all week behind a desk!" Bronwyn Gardiner, Career Advisor
