APRE News – Mr Brendan Schostakowski

NEW RELIGION CURRICULUM

This Friday, 11 October, Brisbane Catholic Education will launch the New Religious Education Curriculum. This is a significant event in the life of the Archdiocese of Brisbane. The following are some of the principles that have guided the design and development of this new Religious Education Curriculum P-12 since 2011:

• The classroom teaching and learning of Religion should reflect the philosophy, content focus, structure, academic rigor and assessment and reporting modes used in other curriculum areas.

• The content should reflect a Catholic Christian worldview that integrates faith, life and culture. • The design and development needs to build on the best practice in Religious Education currently being enacted in

schools and colleges of the Archdiocese. • The framework should bring into closer alignment the two dimensions of Religious Education – classroom teaching

of religion and the religious life of the school. • The pedagogical direction should reflect an inquiry-based approach to learning that aligns closely with the Australian

History and English curriculum.

This project is the beginning of a new era in the way we conceptualise and teach Religious Education. To enter new territory will require imagination, courage and, above all, faith. It will mean letting go of old baggage as we set out, like Abraham, on a new journey led by God. My prayers are with all of you as we set out on the great adventure of opening the infinite treasures of Jesus Christ to the young people whom we are called to serve. Mark Coleridge, Archbishop of Brisbane Over the coming weeks I will be outlining further aspects of this new curriculum.

ATTITUDE AND YOUTH

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind. It is the freshness of the deeper springs of life. Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. People grow old by deserting their ideals. Whether 60 or 16, every human being may experience wonder, the undaunted challenge of events, the unfailing, childlike appetite for the future, the joy in living. For you are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your despair. As long as your heart receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage, and power from God and from your fellow human beings, you are young.

From A Canopy of Stars: Some Reflections for the Journey by Fr Christopher Gleeson SJ

Best wishes for a successful and productive Term 4.

Brendan

National Bandanna Day - Friday 18 October National Bandanna Day for this year will be held on Friday 18 October. By participating in this day we are raising money to help CANTEEN provide dedicated youth cancer centres and services, counselling resources and peer support programs that young people living with cancer so desperately need. We would love to see all children wear a bandanna on this day to show their support for such an important cause. The children can wear their Bandanna in all sorts of ways. The website: www.canteen.org.au/BandannaDay lists the different ways the bandanna can be worn. Unfortunately, this year we were unable to purchase bandannas to sell at school but you will be able to buy one at your local supermarket. So let us all get behind this important fundraiser by wearing a bandanna on Friday 18 October. Nicole Jones (Support teacher- Inclusive Education) Emilia Michieletto (Year 6 Teacher)
