P R I N C I PA L’ S M E S S AG EIt is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the Goffstown High School 2017-2018 school year. I hope this year’s inaugural GRIZZ finds you enjoying the last weeks of summer.

As we get ready for school to start, I will thank some hard working people, highlight in-formation regarding the first day of school and share some thoughts on communication.

Please join me in thanking our dedicated and committed custodial and maintenance staff. Additionally, my thanks to our students who worked hard this summer cleaning and beautifying our school. The school, both inside and out, has never looked better!

Thank you to Neville Excavating for their hard work all summer on the drainage and back parking lot project. Not only does the property look great, we will be ready to welcome students and staff on September 5th. With these changes, student parking will have a different traffic flow this school year. Watch our website and Facebook page for more information. All students purchasing a 17/18 parking sticker will have an in-formational session on the traffic pattern before receiving permission to park in the lot.

New students are invited to the high school main office lobby on August 31st for an informal “open house” from 2 - 4 PM sponsored by Student Ambassadors. A copy of student schedules will be available and students can elect to receive a guided tour of the building. Tour groups will leave from the main office lobby. The goal of this event is to help students feel more acclimated and ready to have a successful first day at Goffstown High School.

The first day of school for students is Tuesday, September 5th. Students may await the first bell in any part of the building. Additionally, I would like to welcome the new (and returning) teaching staff joining us this year:

Marian Annis - Science Joshua Devriendt - Science Joseph Brett Kalbacher – Math/Tech Josh Lewis – Social Studies Sam O’Brien – Social Studies Jeff Olisky – World Language Svea Schreiner – English Kaitlin Sylvia – Math

In the School Counseling Office, students and parents will be greeted by Silvia Lewis at the reception desk this school year.

As we begin the year questions may arise. A good place to address a question or concern is with the teacher or staff member who has direct knowledge of the particular situation. The best way to reach a teacher or staff member is via their e-mail address, which can be found on our website. You are always welcome to contact me directly at 660-5322, through my administrative assistant Lynn Cavagnaro at 660-5309, or via e-mail at [email protected].

We believe our effectiveness in communicating with parents is important to student success. Clearly, the GRIZZ is loaded with valu-able information and is a key communication tool. After this month’s mailed issue, the GRIZZ will be sent home via SchoolMes-senger. If you prefer to receive the GRIZZ via mail please complete the form on page 6. Another important communication tool that many of you have already discovered is our web-based database, PowerSchool, that allows 24-hour access to your child’s attendance, grades, and financial obligations. We will also use SchoolMessenger during the school year to highlight dates and to share informa-tion. For questions about accessing PowerSchool, please contact Patty Easton at [email protected] or 660-5310.

I hope you enjoy the last few weeks of summer. Once again, I would like to reiterate, if you have questions: please ask them. If you have concerns: please share them. Our goal is to meet your family’s needs. Finally, if you have not already done so take a minute to “like” us on Facebook. We will also use this tool to keep you up to date about high school happenings. We look forward to working together to have another rewarding and successful school year.

Regards,

Francis J. McBride

2017 GHS GRAD WINS NATIONAL ART RECOGNITION

Darby Bowen, a 2017 Goffstown High School graduate, and her teacher Ava-lyn Lane were notified in July that Darby had been awarded first place in the 3D catego-ry for the national Young Marine Artist Search Program (YMAS). Earning a Silver Key in the Scholastic Art Awards of New Hampshire with a marine themed work, she became eligible to enter her mixed media sculpture “Bloom” into the YMAS competition.

“Bloom, a suspended sculpture, was selected for recognition by a panel of jurors from the American Marine Society of Artists. She and her teacher will travel to the Marine Art Conference in late October for the national awards ceremony, which will be held in Mystic, CT. Darby will be the recipient of a scholarship, awards rib-bon and certificate.

Darby will continue her post-secondary education at the New Hampshire Institute of Art this fall.

Welcome to the GHS nurses’ office. Here are a few reminders for the start of our new school year. Each year, health forms are reviewed and updated as needed to provide your student with the best possible health services as required during the school day. Forms are located on the SAU #19 home page under the Health Services tab.

The “Over the Counter Medication” (OTC) form as well as the “Health History” questionnaire are included in the packet that goes home with students on the first day of school. Both forms should be completed and returned. Check off on the OTC form the medications you authorize nurses to dispense to your student. These medications are provided by the nurses’ office, and a signed form must be provided in order for the student to have these medications. If there is an OTC product not listed, parents may provide a specific one and list it with instructions on the OTC form.

Prescription medications that need to be dispensed during school hours must be brought in by a parent or guardian with no more than a 30 day supply stored at any time. The “Prescription Medication Authorization” form must be signed by the parent or guardian and accompanied by a doctor’s order. All medications must be in the original prescription bottle; most pharmacies will provide a second labeled empty bottle for school at your request. Please note: Students are not permitted to carry any medications, prescription or OTC.

The “Emergency Care Plan” is for students who have an allergy requiring an EpiPen. With signed parent and provider permission, students may self carry their EpiPen. The “Student Asthma Action Card” should also be completed each year with signed permission for a student to self carry their inhaler.

Physicals and immunization forms as they are updated should be provided to the nurses’ office. There are forms for athletic physicals that can be accessed on Goffstown Athletics.com, click on athletic department tab and then physical form.

Please contact the nurses’ office at (603) 660-5328 with any questions.

Kathi Kendall RN Jennifer Franz RN

NOTES FROM THE NURSES’ OFFICE

On the first day of school, students will attend all of their classes (see first day schedule on page 6). During their first class meetings, teachers will recommend the supplies needed for each class. We recommend that students come to school on day one with something to write with, a folder, and a notebook.

SENIOR ACT/SAT TESTING

A SMOOTH START IN SEPTEMBER

WELCOME

CL A SSof

2021We hope students have enjoyed their summer and are ready to have a great year. Our office will be fully staffed as of August 24th and we are ready to support students as they continue to pursue their goals.

Schedules were distributed to all students in June. Counselors were available to make schedule changes throughout final exams and the first week of summer vacation. This means that only a few students should need schedule adjustments at the start of the year. Counselors will be available August 24-August 29th from 8:00-3:00 each day to make schedule changes or meet with par-ents and students. Please call 660-5301 to set up an appointment.

Our primary goal is to get students off to as strong a start on the academic year and to have them in the appropriate classes from the first day of school. Once the year begins, schedule changes should be limited to situations that are beyond a student’s con-trol. Priority will be given to students who are in the following categories:• Student has an incomplete schedule for Semester I (fewer than six classes)• Student failed to complete a prerequisite last year• Class is an incorrect level• Student is a junior or senior who needs to meet a grad - uation requirement.

On the first day of school, all students should follow the schedule distributed in homeroom regardless of their plans to drop or add a class. Changes will not be made to accommodate a desired late arrival or early release, teacher preferences, or to be in class with a peer. If you have an extenuating circumstance that does not meet the criteria above, please have a parent email or write Mrs. Lewis, the School Counseling Coordinator, for further con-sideration.

Our goal is to complete all class changes by Friday, September 8th.

If you are a senior, now is the time to register for the fall SAT and/or ACT. Registration test dates and deadlines are available online at www.collegeboard.com (for the SAT) or www.actstu-dent.org. SAT testing dates for fall are 10/7 and 11/4. The reg-istration deadlines are 9/8 and 10/5, respectively. ACT testing dates are 10/28 and 12/09 with commensurate registration dead-lines of 9/22 and 11/3.

SAT testing is being offered at GHS for the October and Novem-ber test dates. Please be sure to list GHS as your testing site. If you have questions, see Mrs. Lewis in the School Counseling Office.

SCHOOL COUNSELING OFFICE

We encourage all seniors to schedule fall appointments with their school counselor in order to develop individual plans for their life after high school. Counselors are also available to meet with students and parents together. Call 660-5301 after September 8th to schedule an appointment.

SENIOR COLLEGE/CAREER PLANNINGCounselors will be in senior classrooms during the week of Sep-tember 11th to talk to students about career exploration and the college application process. Students will receive information packets that they should bring home in order to involve parents in this critical discussion. This will include additional informa-tion about how Naviance connects to the Common App and the process for requesting transcripts and recommendations elec-tronically. All students have a Naviance account which they be-gan to access in freshman year to complete interest inventories and to perform college searches. As seniors, students and par-ents utilize Naviance to continue college exploration, search for scholarships, and to organize the application process. Naviance accounts can be accessed at https://connection.naviance.com/family-connection/auth/login/?hsid=goffstown or by visiting the Student Services webpage and clicking on “Naviance Family Connection”. Students access Naviance with their network log-in. If you need help, please contact Mrs. Lewis for assistance at 660-5320.

Our School Counseling staff will present information regarding the college search and application process. This presentation is designed for students and parents and is a great way to have your questions answered early in the year.

FINANCIAL AID NIGHTNew Hampshire Higher Education As-sistance Foundation (NHHEAF) will be hosting a Financial Aid Night on Thurs-day, October 12th from 6:30-8:00 pm. This presentation is designed to help families navigate the financial aid process. Come learn about how to apply for aid and the types of aid available. ARTS & ACTIVIT IES Have you ever thought about a career in business? Are you interested in becoming a strong leader? JOIN FBLA!

Future Business Leaders of America is the largest student run business organization in the world!

If you’re interested in community service, or are thinking about pursuing a business related career, Future Business Leaders of America is the club for you!

Popular careers such as retail management, accountants, sports marketing, business owners, and nearly every other career benefits from, if not requires, a background in business, and FBLA is here to help you gain the skills you need to build a strong foundation for your business future!

Ask any of our members, and they can attest to the amount of fun our organization is. We host countless fundraisers, fairs, attend competitions, and take fieldtrips throughout the school year, and most importantly, give back to our local community! We meet ev-ery Thursday morning in T-11, at 7:30 – Our first meeting this year is on Thursday, September 14th at 7:30 am in room T-11. Hope to see you there!

If you’re taking a business class next year, including economics, come to any meeting to see what we’re all about! You will NOT regret it!

Questions? Contact Mrs. Scarlett at [email protected] or stop by and visit in room T-11.

If you are taking Latin this year, think about coming to our opening meeting on Monday, September 18 at 2:45 in room 105 to learn more about the upcoming year plans. We will also be electing officers at that time for a fun and interesting year. We have been meet-ing on Mondays, but if the membership would prefer a different day, we can change future times at the meeting.

We meet weekly to do different activities to promote the classics. There are parties, games, and competitions, and sometimes we cook Latin food with the culinary club, engage in online tests, watch movies, and do art projects. It’s all up to you! This year, we hope to field a Certamen team to go to the state competition in December. We also try to hold a fundraiser to offset the costs of the club activities and do a community service event in the spring to celebrate Classics Week. We are always open to new ideas.

Members of the Latin Club also go on a school field trip to Classics Day for Students in May, which is very popular. The $10 mem-bership fee for the club helps to cover the cost of the field trip as well as various adminstrative costs associated with the national organization.

One of the benefits of belonging to the NJCL is the opportunity to become a member of the National Latin Honor Society. This is for students who are members of the Latin Club, have an A average, attend 10 full meetings, and are positive contributors. However, many students participate happily in our club without being in the Honor Society. We really just want to spread our love of the Roman world.

Hope to see you there on September 18th.

FIRST MEETING DATE FOR CLUBS & EVENTS

We welcome the class of 2021 to the Visu-al Art Department. There are a wide va-riety of classes that you may chose from to meet your fine arts credit required for graduation.

If you are taking a visual art class this year, most, if not all, re-quired supplies and equipment will be provided for your use in class. The exception would be if you are enrolled in Photo Art & Design or Commercial Art. A flash drive for saving your photo-graphs and digital work would be beneficial in these classes.

We look forward to meeting you on September 5th!

Welcome Back! Student Council has already been hard at work planning exciting events for the upcoming year as well as preparing for the first day of school. Our Student Council is made up of a mix of hard-working leaders coming together to host a variety of school and community events throughout the school year. As a group, we work to unite our school through our activities and make our school a positive and welcoming environment for all. We are thankful for our advisors, Sra. McKinnon and Sr. Fitzpatrick, who spend hours throughout the year encouraging us and helping us to achieve our goals. The 2017-2018 Student Council includes:

Executive BoardPresident: Mitch Scacchi

Vice President: Sinéad BehanSecretary: Abby PoissonTreasurer: Hannah Tate

School Board RepresentativeJac St. Jean

This group will meet as a whole twice before the first day of school to welcome new members, reflect on the past year and discuss new ideas and goals for the upcoming school year. Our first full council meeting will be held on Monday, August 28th from 1pm to around 4pm in the Step Room (Room 318) at GHS. Student Council members also meet with their class councils to discuss individ-ual class events and goals. Student Council members are expected to be active participants in our full group meetings as well as in meetings with their respective classes.

We will also be having an outing at Clough State Park on Friday, September 1st from 11am to about 2pm. There, we will be playing icebreaker games to get to know each other while enjoying the beach and a potluck lunch.

The first day of school is September 5th and Student Council will be greeting students before school and faculty as they enter the building, welcoming them to the school year and coordinating different events during the hour lunch. Pizza will also be sold for $2 a slice during lunch and there will be fun events such as dodgeball and karaoke. We are excited for another fun-filled first day!

On Friday, September 15th we will be holding Student Council Elections for the class of 2021. Any student interested in running for one of the nine available positions should see Sra. McKinnon in room 103 or Sr. Fitzpatrick in room 102 for an application or for more information.

We are also looking forward to our school’s Homecoming Week, which will be held from October 16th to October 21st. Throughout the week, school spirit is promoted as students are encouraged to participate in dress-up days, attend the home sports games, and participate in each day’s lunch event. On Friday, we will host our annual Homecoming Assembly, where classes compete in different events such as dodgeball and each class will present their choreographed dance. The winning class is announced at the Homecoming Dance Saturday evening.

This year’s Student Council is looking forward to welcoming new members and reconnecting with our returning members as we prepare for another fun and exciting year!

GHS Athletics FAQQuestion: I have passing grades and no incompletes in all of my classes for the semester. Will I be eligible to play a sport in the up coming season?

Answer: Any student must have passed at least FIVE credit courses the previous QUARTER. Eligibility is not assessed on semester grades but previous quarter grades.

Furthermore, a student ineligible under Goffstown High School policy but eligible under the NHIAA guidelines may apply for a waiver hearing to determine their eligibility status. A waiver hearing is done on a case-by-case basis, can only happen once during a student-athlete’s high school career, and is subject to approval by the Principal.

“Sportsmanship for me is when a guy walks off the court and you really can’t tell whether he won or lost, when he carries himself with pride either way.“

“GOAL” Goffstown Outstanding Athletic Leadership

Made up of forty student athletes, “GOAL’s mission is to support strong leadership among members of Goffstown sports teams to increase sportsmanship, team unity, and to unite the entire Goffstown athletic program into a single dynamic entity. Goal’s main functions will be to:

*Unite Goffstown Athletics as “1 Team”. *Increase/Improve Sportsmanship at all athletic events. *Increase interest in Goffstown Athletics throughout the school and community. *Improve and increase School Spirit and Pride. *Improve all aspects of Athletic “life” at GHS through goal setting.

If you have community based volunteer opportunities for this group we’d love to hear from you.

Finally, as we enter a new school year of Goffstown High School athletics, I would like to see our student-athletes and fans exhibit a great deal of positive sportsmanship in all of our athletic contests. Goffstown athletics expectations for fans are few and simple:

1. Cheer for your team not against the visitors. 2. Don’t get personal in your comments to players, coaches or officials. 3. No profanity, vulgarity, racist or sexist comments.

BE LOUD, BE PROUD, BE POSITIVE!
