PRINCIPAL’S M E S S A G E - Wakatipu High School
Transcript of PRINCIPAL’S M E S S A G E - Wakatipu High School
Welcome to the Wakatipu High School Newsletter as we enter the second half of the term.A very big welcome to all of our new students and parents who joined us for our Orientation Day today - it is always an important day for students and for us, and it was great to have so many parents join us this morning. As I referenced last week, the school is now in quite a different mode with seniors off sitting exams (although teachers are still running tutorials for a number of classes), and our focus is now on the juniors.
BYOD - as part of the Orientation Day today, Mr Rasmussen ran a session for incoming parents on BYOD, and it was great to have such a good turnout. All things BYOD are definitely getting going for us now: the very first financial support has now been approved - and we welcome more, the Noel Leeming’s evening is on Monday night, and today students have even been emailed re the locker application process (incoming students will be emailed next week). For more information re BYOD please see Mr Rasmussen's section below.
Branches - today was Branches Workday, an important day to raise funds for the upcoming Branches Camp. A huge thanks to Bennie Neilson for all her wonderful work in organising the day.As I said last week, Branches is now less than two weeks away - and it will fly by. Please ensure you and your students are on top of things - from getting all the gear sorted, to paying the camp fees (or seeing us for Awhi Fund support), to tents and transport. The camp is not off in the future anymore - time for action!
WHS Foundation Golf Day - as I have mentioned many times before, the school benefits greatly from the generous support of the Wakatipu High School Foundation. They have an upcoming event that is not to be missed - a golf day at Millbrook on Thursday 3rd December. Please see the flyer at the end of the Newsletter for details, or contact Jennifer Belmont on [email protected] . It will be a great day out, so get some friends together and come along to support this important cause.
Website - a while back I referred to the overhaul we were doing on our website, and by next week we reckon we’ll be live on the new site - watch this space!
Principal's Awards - from our recent Senior Reports there were a very large number of students who received Principal’s Awards, and so we have decided to include the full list below. My congratulations to all of these great all-round students!
Another spring weekend weather-wise on the way, with a bit of everything, but it should still be ok to get out and about for most of it - enjoy!

It is now less than two weeks until the Branches Camp. At this stage we are very short of parent transport in and out of Branches. Parents - please use the Transport link below to help us plan for the camp in terms of getting students in and out. Please note that if your son/daughter is in the first 6 groups that will be going in to camp early (25th, 26th November), you will be emailed early next week and notified about this. All other students will be going in on 27 November.http://goo.gl/forms/WbEkaw4xfB
Please note, we also require tent forms information as soon as possible.
Pre-Branches Day tramps are next Friday 20th November. Students will come to school and find out their group, do a gear check, then go on a day tramping experience. Students have been informed of what to bring via the Branches Camp Google Classroom.

Congratulations to the following students who were awarded a Principal’s Award recently.
Firstly I would like acknowledge and welcome new families to Wakatipu High School who have students starting with us in Year 9 next year. There are a few significant updates in this week's newsletter with regard to BYOD. We have now confirmed the three bundles that can be purchased through Noel Leeming. These bundles all include a laptop and case. In addition to this, optional extra insurance can be purchased ( either one year accidental insurance and / or 3 year warranty).
Bundle 1 - HP 11.6” Stream Notebook Blue with case $439 (advertised at $499) http://tinyurl.com/prlqkx2Bundle 2 - HP 15.6” Blue Notebook with case $999 (advertised at $1199) http://tinyurl.com/ofbovpnBundle 3 -Apple MacBook Air 13” with case $1799 (advertised at $1799) http://tinyurl.com/ohf64daIn terms of these bundles and how they relate to our published specifications please see the table below. Specifications can be found on our website at www.wakatipu.school.nz.
**Due to screen size only, recommended in all other aspects.
In addition to this information, I would like to remind you that Noel Leeming has agreed to open up their store at Remarkables Park on the evening of Monday 16th of November from 6.30pm - 8.00pm exclusively for current and prospective Wakatipu High School families. This evening will also include further information about the vision and development of eLearning at Wakatipu High School and provide an opportunity to have your questions answered. In addition you will be able to purchase items from the store. The relationship with Noel Leeming does not prevent anyone purchasing a suitable device that meets our minimum recommendations from any supplier either locally or online.
As mentioned previously, we recognise that all families may not be in a position to provide a suitable device for learning in 2016. If you feel that you are in that position and require financial support, could you please contact the Dean of your child’s house either via email or phone. They will be able to discuss with you the options that are available for support. If you are unsure, email me and I’ll direct you.
If you would like to know anything more about the introduction of BYOD at Wakatipu High School, please contact me, James Rasmussen, Deputy Principal. [email protected]

Congratulations to Sam Robbie who finished as a runner up in the Junior Sports Man of the Year with a Highly Commended award.Congratulations to Alice Robinson who won the Junior Sports Woman of the Year award. This is a great achievement, and well deserved for the excellent year Alice has had in Ski Racing.

Cricket – On Sunday the WHS Cricket Team held a fundraiser to raise money for their trip to Australia in 2016 where they will compete against NSW Country Cricket teams in a festival of cricket. It was an incredibly well run day that saw 9 local 6-aside cricket teams play a tournament at the Events Centre. This also included a WHS Staff team and some of the Junior Cricket boys themselves. Congratulations to Russell Mawhinney and the organising committee for hosting such a great event.
Thank you to all those who turned out and supported the team. While the final result should not matter on these occasions, it should be noted that a star studded WHS Staff team managed to take home the winner’s trophy after being undefeated throughout the day.

Last term all Year 10 students were tasked with identifying an issue that affected the wellbeing of the school community at Wakatipu High School. They had to take action to improve an issue as part of the Health programme. This year the Health and Physical Education Learning Area ran it as a competition and there were some awesome initiatives that came out of this project where students are empowered to make a positive difference to their school community.
In small groups students looked at a range of issues in the school including; school uniform, school bus system, common rooms for all year levels, lockers, seating around the school, water fountains/coolers, the state of the changing rooms and many, many more. They surveyed students, researched costs, other schools and impacts, took photos and conducted interviews with relevant staff members to develop a greater understanding of their issue and decide on the right action to take to make an improvement.
Students made videos, lobbied groups and wrote letters to companies, vested parties and senior leadership at the school. The winning groups are listed below, and they are all from Mrs Faulkners Line 2 Health class, congratulations.
1st – An app for the GPS tracking of buses for students and parents – Karina Tickle, MatayaWelsh, Greer Diack2nd – More power boxes/multi packs in classrooms for students to charge devices as part of BYOD at school – Lexi Rosemoore, Bianca Crichton and Cameron Ryall.3rd – More water fountains and water coolers in classes to increase hydration of students –Shion Forsyth, Gracie McQuaig, Veronica Mitchell and Hannah Coombe.

Senior students must return all their Library, English and Maths books to the Library as soon as possible. The library will be open as usual until the end of term so books can be returned after the relevant exams but we would prefer you to return them sooner if possible. If you are not sure what has been issued to you, please check with the librarian. You can be confident that any book that you have at home which is labelled Wakatipu High School should be returned. Students who are returning in 2016 can arrange to borrow some library books for the summer holidays.
