Head of Teaching and Learning Corner Assalamu-Alaikum, Mashallah it is already Week 6 of Term 1 2020, and the year is flying past. The students have settled well into the new year, and on their way to achieving great things. This year has already started off with many wonderful events and the staff and students at the College have many more planned for the upcoming terms. Firstly, I would like to congratulate and welcome Year 11 students – welcome to your senior years, and your last few years of schooling. You have all worked extremely hard to get here, and In Sha Allah this year will also prove to be a successful one. As for our leaders of the College, our Year 12 students, this is a bittersweet year being your last year at AICS. This year will require determination, courage and a lot of hard work and we are all working together and praying for your success In Sha Allah. The focus in Teaching and Learning at AICS in 2020 to is to provide students with a high quality of education, with our hard-working teachers providing students with innovative and engaging lessons and providing them with extensive feedback. We have updated our Curriculum and Programming documents and are constantly evaluating and refining to meet student learning needs as the year progresses. Parents were provided with Course Outlines on Parent Information Evening, which was held in Week 3 of this term, detailing the requirements of each course that is running within the College this year from Year 7 to Year 12. Our goal is to promote student learning through collaboration with students, teachers and parents. There are Parent Teacher Evenings held twice a year- the next one will be held at the end of Term 1. This is the perfect opportunity for parents to meet with teachers and Year Advisors and develop collective goals and to gain a better understanding of their child’s learning. This is also a great chance to start a dialogue with your child’s teachers to keep an open communication forum throughout the year. Our Year 12 teachers are busy creating exams for the Year 12 Half Yearly Examinations, which are held in Week 10 -11 of this term. I encourage all Year 12 students to take this opportunity to practice exam style conditions, and evaluate and reflect on their learning, so they can better prepare themselves for their Trial and HSC exams later in the year In Sha Allah. On 2nd March, a short SRC Assembly was held to congratulate the new SRC students from Year 7-10, and our new prefects from Year 11. The following students were presented with their badges in the assembly: Year 7: Aaqib Reza Year 8: Faraz Rasta Year 9: Rabih Kassem Ayah Akl Bara Adam Nazaahah Dean M. Head of Welfare Corner So far this year Mrs. Sullivan and myself have undergone some changes to the way student

welfare has been monitored and dealt with effectively. During these last six weeks, we

have been busy providing the best support we can to these students and teachers.

Within the school there is a growing concern for how students are treating each other in

and out of school. Students are feeling left out and alone, bullied in some way, stressed

due to upcoming assessments and overloaded due to homework. Remind students that it

is also important to assist a friend or someone they do not know when they see they are

having a hard time. Remind them to be kind, caring and ask students who are sad if they

are ok. Sometimes that’s all anyone needs to boost their self-esteem and make them feel

good again.

If you are concerned about your child’s wellbeing please contact us so that we are able

help as quickly and efficiently as we can.

1C in 2020 Welcome to the 2020 school year in 1C. It has been a pleasure to begin to get to know your child as our class, 1C, begins to establish our routines and class culture. In English students will learn to develop their knowledge of concepts about print as they engage in a range of modelled and shared reading experiences. Students are taught specific skills and strategies for reading and comprehension. They learn to express themselves and respond to a variety of texts. Year one will be exposed to texts by popular authors and imaginative texts that relate to texts read and everyday experiences students may be exposed to. In Mathematics students have been introduced to the meaning of addition as putting together and subtraction as taking away. Addition situations are initially expressed through addition stories before advancing to addition sentences. The concept of number bonds is also applied here as an addition and subtraction tool. Number sequencing, fact families and the ‘making 10’ method are also introduced to empower students with more tools to perform addition and subtraction effectively and observe the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction. In Science students have been learning about plants, how and where they can grow, the basic features of plants and why plants are useful to humans. Following this, students will be designing a vertical garden somewhere in the school grounds where they can grow plants in limited places as plants are very important to humans and the environment. They will soon be going on an excursion to The Royal Botanical Gardens and they will undertake the “Get Growing’ program which focuses on exploring the amazing world of plants. What a wonderful, exciting term the amazing 1C students are having! Ms. Paras Luca 1C Class Teacher

“The world today doesn’t make much sense, so why would I paint pictures that do?” – Pablo Picasso This term, our focus for Creative Arts is Visual Arts. Year Four has been exploring and learning about the art of Cubism which was made famous by the painter Pablo Picasso in the 20th Century (sometime between 1907 and 1914). It is an abstract form of art that uses cubes and other geometric shapes in an aim to show all of the possible viewpoints of a person or an object all at once. The students of Year Four have had a fun time creating interesting artworks using the techniques of Cubism that they have been learning about and practicing. Trying to veer away from producing realistic looking art felt a bit awkward for many, but their developing appreciation of the art form has opened their eyes to new ideas of what art and creativity can actual mean. Many of their final products have been incredibly impressive! Who knows… a future famous artist just might be on our midst.

Excursion to Sydney Bicentennial Park Education Centre

In Week 4 Year 6 students were provided with the opportunity to visit Bicentennial Park Sydney. As a part of their Science study unit, Year 6 students are learning about the habitats of the local and international water birds and shorebirds that live in and visit the protected wetlands of Sydney Olympic Park. Sydney was lashed with damaging winds and heavy downpour just a few days before our excursion. During that storm 74,000 lightning strikes hit the Sydney region. The flora and fauna at the Park was really disturbed. There were swarms of mosquitoes and other bugs which were not expected but the officers at the Education Centre told us that they were surprised to find this extraordinary change. Students coped with the new situation really well, as we are teaching them to be resilient. Students used a combination of observation, scientific measurement and data collection methods to determine if the wetland habitats of Sydney Olympic Park could support the needs of local, national and migratory water birds and shorebirds. Students used scientific equipment to assist them with their investigations. All of the data collected was recorded by the students and their results then compared with current research data used to answer the field trip question “How effectively has this wetland been constructed and managed to provide a habitat for local and international water birds?” It was a highly informative and interesting educational trip. Students enjoyed the outdoor learning experience. Ms. Nuzhat Ejaz 6D Class Teacher

Cleanliness or purity is part of faith in religion Islam, that’s why Islam puts so much stress on being clean. The purification of body strengthens our soul, which ultimately brings us closer to the acceptance of Allah هلالج لج. We want to make sure that we are, in a physical sense, as well as a spiritual sense, “purified” before we stand up in praying to Allah. Prayer is not acceptable if you do not perform wudu. Allah Almighty says in the Noble Quran about the importance of Wudu, what means: “O you who believe! When you intend to offer prayer, wash your faces and your hands (forearms) up to the elbows, rub (by passing wet hands over) your heads, and (wash) your feet up to the ankles. In the first three weeks, Year 5 students have been learning about important points on wudu. Some of the important areas of learning were: -

The invalidating matters of Wudu

Addressing some pre-conditions of Wudu

The importance of making wudu even if one is in a state of wudu

Alhamdulillah with lots of discussions, examples, activities and some practicals, I am confident that our students have understood these concepts properly and have gone a stage higher in their education of Islamic Studies. May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala accept our efforts and grant us the knowledge of Islam. Ameen Ya Rabbal Aalameen Mr. Abdul Aziz Islamic Studies Teacher

Salam and a warm welcome to everyone for Term 1 of 2020. The PDHPE department has been full of exciting changes and additions over the start of the Year. We are now well within the first year of the new syllabus, and the students are engaging well. The assessment tasks are now also starting to be handed out, so keep an eye out for those. We have introduced our new sports day, that takes place every fortnight on Wednesdays, students and staff alike have been enjoying the open fields that are available at Heber Park. Students are reminded, that it is vital they wear a hat/sunscreen and also bring a water bottle. The blue court that is located in the front of the school will soon have new equipment added to it! looking forward to the student’s reactions and indeed interactions with the upcoming infrastructure. Finally, we welcome to our team Mr. Jaime Araya, who brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm, and myself, Rafaa Quddusi as your new head of department. A title page full of positivity and encouragement! Our stage 4 students spent the first week back at school designing a title page for their Visual Arts Process Diary. This is a very important step in Visual Arts as the VAPD should be a place where our students record their development of ideas, reflect on and evaluate their own Artmaking, and practice refinement of their technical skills. Within any art practice, the quality of the artwork is dependent on the amount of time, thought and effort placed into its production. The Australian artist Fred Williams was once asked “what makes a good painting?” The artist replied “200 paintings!” This suggests that the formula to produce a good piece of art is a long and laborious one complimented with lots of experimentation and practice.

Tone used as a Visual element of Art Our stage 4 students have been learning about tinting, toning and shading objects. Whether using a lead pencil, colour pencil, ink marker or paint. An Artist always needs to visualise positive and negative shapes and spaces to help create the illusion of form from 2D shapes. Directional lighting on still life objects casts shadows and makes shading easier for the students to master. To help achieve this effect, the students were asked to find the lightest tints of each object and keep that area of paper white then to shade the darkest areas and slowly apply the middle tones to help create the illusion of depth and volume. Some of our stage 4 students did an awesome job creating highlights, shading and cast shadows to their exercises on 3D forms!!!

We are now more than halfway through Term 1. The HSIE team welcomes back years 8 to 12 and a big warm welcome to year 7, who have settled well into their High Schooling life. It is great to see the AICS students settled well into their learning and showing dedication to their studies. Year 7 and Year 9 have been undertaking the compulsory study of Geography. With Year 7 learning about how landscapes and landforms around the earth have been created and how humanity have used them overtime. And Year 9 have been studying the topic Sustainable Biomes – what is a biome and how humanity have changed them in the past and how they are trying to fix them so they can continue thriving the future. Years 8 and 10 have been studying the compulsory courses of History. Year 8 have been Investigating the Ancient Past, learning all the different ancient societies and the legacy they have left for historians to discover. In year 10 students are learning about the movement of people throughout the world and history, those who have voluntarily migrated and in-voluntarily migrated. On Wednesday 4th of March, year 10 students will be going to the Quarantine Station at Manly, there they will be engaged in a Historical site study, learning about the purpose of the place and the information it will provided to budding historians. Stage 5 Commerce is an elective course many of our students have made the decision to undergo in Years 9 and 10. Through doing this course it provides opportunities for students to learn about being a responsible consumer and making financial decisions in a responsible manner. In year 10 students are learning about being an informed and active Australian citizen and their involvement in the political process. It has been wonderful to see how our year 11 and year 12 students have started the year of well by their study habits and good patterns of learning. This development will assist them in the process of being adult learners to ensure they can achieve their best not just at the end of their HSC year but hopefully in their extended education, in whatever capacity that might be. As we are coming into the back end of Term 1, the all students would be working on their assessments. It is important for students to ensure they manage their time well, and not to leave the tasks to the last minute – in order to achieve their best results possible. It is also important for students to remember that their HSIE teachers are there to assist them were possible, so if anyone is stuck all they need to do is ask. We would like to welcome back HSIE team consists of: Mr Petre Bichsecu Mrs Deme Dixon Mrs Khansa Maqbool Mrs Sabina Keith Mrs Natalie Simonian

Assalamu Alaikum, To start off, we’d like to congratulate the newly elected prefects and representatives of our proud school from years 7-11. We look forward to working together to make this a memorable and eventful year for the SRC team.

As the leaders of the student body, it is vital that we give our peers the opportunity to voice their ideas and recommendations for the college. To do so, we have taken the initiative of placing a suggestion box outside Mr. McAllister’s office to motivate students to put forward their proposals. We encourage students of all grades to partake in this action in order for us to work in unison to make the college an even more welcoming and suitable environment for our pupils. May Allah continue to give us the ability to aid each other in the betterment of the college.
