Dear Parents and Caregivers,

During the school holidays the bottom floor of C Block at the Griffith site will be significantly upgraded.

There are six classrooms in the Maths faculty area that will have brand new entrances, carpets and painting. All the rooms will be reclad in sound absorbent autex: http://www.autex.com.au/. The old asbestos tiles that were on the floor will be removed during this time to ensure there is no danger for any students or staff in the future.

Following this renovation the workers will move to the Wade site where thirteen classrooms in B Block will have a similar upgrade.

All the classrooms in the HSIE and Maths faculty areas will have brand new entrances, carpets, painting and autex cladding.

Both of these upgrades will cause some room changes in the early part of Term 2 but I am sure the inconvenience will be well worth it when we have the new classrooms in the new school colours.

The school is paying for these renovations from our own maintenance budget and this is not part of the major school building program.

The major school building program is currently on track to commence on the first day of Term 3 2019.All the best

Science/Agriculture Report - Griffith SiteScience and Agriculture have started the year with lots of hands on learning and aim to continue this throughout the year.

Junior ScienceYear 8 have been investigating how to separate dif-ferent types of mixtures and where these techniques are used in everyday life. Some techniques they have used include filtration, evaporation and crys-tallisation, distillation and chromatography.

Year 9 students have been learning about diseases. They have looked at different types of disease and their causes, as well as how they are treated. Stu-dents have had the opportunity to grow and observe bacteria and fungi. They have just completed their first assessment task, a research poster on a disease that interests them.

Year 10 are continuing to learn about chemistry. Students have investigated a range of chemical reactions including precipitation, combustion, corrosion and decomposition. They are currently undertaking a practical assessment task to test their understanding of these reactions.

Year 11 and 12 ScienceThis year we have Biology, Chemistry and for the first time in many years, Earth and Environmental Science running in the Science faculty. The stu-dents have been very busy learning new terms and concepts specific to their subjects. They have also had the opportunity to carry out practical tasks to extend their experiences.

Year 12 students have hit the ground running with lots of work to do. The Biology class has been study-ing genetics and have started their Depth Study. The

Chemistry students have been learning all about titrations and have just completed their assessment task. Physics have been busy learning about and building motors for their depth study.

Agriculture/Primary IndustriesYear 11 Agriculture/Primary Industries is taking up the Merino Wether Challenge which is a State wide Agriculture Competition with thanks to NSW Stud Merinos and the Australian Wool Innovation Organisations. Students will design the feeding program, understand their production purposes of wool and meat and learn to lead the sheep for showing in August in Deniliquin.

Our pastures have had a total renovation in the past 12 months mainly thanks to the purchase of student based tractor equipment. From this, we are now making our own hay, aerating and feeding the soil which in turn allows our pastures to perform much better.

Science/Agriculture Report - Wade SiteHello Parents and Carers,

There have been a lot of interesting happenings in Science and Agriculture this term so far at Mur-rumbidgee Regional High – Wade Site!

We have welcomed Mrs Moon, a former star pupil, who will be teaching Science and Maths this year. Mrs Moon will also be teaching Physics for Year 11 which is greatly appreciated!

We also have Mr Taylor teaching Science this year and also running the Duke of Edinburgh Passion elective.

The new school year has also brought in a change with the delivery of Discovery in Year 7. Discovery is a combination of Science and Geography with Year 7 Science students now developing skills and knowledge in introductory Science and Geography.

Years 8, 9 and 10 Science are starting to work through their assessments with Year 10 in particular designing their own experiments with their Student Research Project. It has been interesting observing some of the ideas they have come up with to test.

The Agriculture classes are in full production mode at the moment with Years 9 and 10 preparing pad-docks for pasture sowing as well as helping with the National Merino Challenge by preparing rations for the sheep and handling them to prepare them for the show in August.

Year 11 Biology have been out to the Redgum Forest at Darlington Point to do their field study on the ecosystem. A great time was had by all although unfortunately they broke their track record of mak-

ing it rain this year with a dry dusty day out in the forest.

Year 11 Agriculture have been on a Case Study Visit to Glenn Andreazza’s farm to discuss his farming techniques. They got a lot out of the trip and were able to observe some of the concepts covered in the theory component of the course. Years 11 and 12 Primary Industries have been completing com-petencies on Fencing, Work Health and Safety and Tractors as well as Weather.

Year 11 Primary Industries are also hard at work preparing the Merino Wethers for the National Me-rino Challenge in August. A great day at the historic “The Yanko” woolshed near Jerilderie provided stu-dents with an insight into the competition and the wool industry in general. We are looking forward to heading to Conargo this year instead of Dubbo for the show.

The inaugural Wade Site cotton crop is nearing harvest and by all reports it looks like a bumper of a crop. It has certainly generated a lot of conversation around the neighbourhood. A huge thankyou must go to Luke Sampson from Monsanto in Wagga and Brendon Wells and Alister Ewing from Landmark Griffith for their expertise and advice.

If you have any concerns with your child’s experi-ences in Science or Agriculture please don’t hesitate to contact myself or your child’s Science teacher at MRHS –Wade Site.

Regards,

Mr Mark DuncanHead Teacher Science and Agriculture -Wade Site

Year 9 Report - Griffith SiteThe first 9 weeks of Term 1 2019 have gone by very quickly at Murrumbidgee Regional High School. One of the new opportunities that involves Year 9 is the new combined sites 9/10 Thursday after-noon sport. These afternoons have been running very successfully and they have allowed students to create new friendships and enjoy physical activity with some new faces. Year 9 have also embraced the new digital sport selection process, which allows them to complete their sport selections even if they are away on the day. They have just completed their selections for Term 2 as of last week.

Another thought-provoking opportunity for our Year 9 students this year is Learning Coaches. The purpose of the Learning Coach period is to provide time for our students to reflect on their learning and their life. Each day of the week has a different focus, which allows the teachers to get to know their students better and assist them with their learning and life choices. The focus for each day is as follows:

• Monday – Positive Behaviour for Learning• Wednesday – Year priority• Thursday – Current assessment and opportunities• Friday – Reflection on learning, attendance and engagement

The year priorities for our Year 9 students that oc-cur on Wednesdays in Semester 1 are:

• Goal Setting• Financial Literacy• Becoming a better learner• The importance of sleep• Change your thoughts, change your life• Hygiene

Year 9 have already had a number of students achieve success this year, especially in the sporting world. Congratulations to the students that have been selected for the Riverina and School Teams already and good luck to those that will be trialling as the year goes on. The students in Year 9 also have an upcoming Athletics Carnival to look forward too. The carnival will be on the last day of Term 1, Friday 12th of April. This carnival will be the first whole school carnival for MRHS.

I look forward to the rest of the year and work-ing closely with our Year 9 students to encourage success in all aspects of school. As the year goes on, I am sure there will be a large number of academic, sporting and extra-curricular achievements for our year group to be proud of and to celebrate. I would like to end this report with something I have been discussing with the year group lately. Be nice to people - not because you are asked to, but because you are nice.

All the best Year 9

Harmony Day Appreciation

Thank you to the local businesses who supported our Harmony Day food stalls.

Year 9 Report - Wade SiteSo with the start of the year bringing so many new changes for us, many things remain the same. Our expected behaviours and values have not changed and it is pleasing to see so many Year 9 students doing their best to uphold our PBL values.

MRHS saw its first of many sports trials day with many Year 9 students taking part and being selected to represent MRHS at a variety of sporting events.

Year 9 have also had the opportu-nity to reselect their sports activ-ities for next term. We are aiming to deliver everyone their first choice but this may not be possi-ble due to numbers and staffing. Harmony day was celebrated on Thursday 21st March, which saw all of Year 9 transported across to the Griffith site for fun, food and touch football. This was a fabu-lous day filled with songs, danc-

ing and amazing food!We are hoping to organise a snow excursion this year in coordina-tion with Griffith Site!

Good luck to Mr Cranston who is leaving MRHS! Welcome to Ms Ingham who will be assisting Ms West in Year Advising!

SwimmingWith the start of the new era in sport, the inaugural Murrumbidgee Regional High School swimming carnivals were held. Competitors came together from Wade and Griffith sites at the Griffith Regional Aquat-ic and Leisure Centre to start our journey forward as one school. Unlike past years, the swimming carnival was held over two days. The day was organised into a competitors only day, in which Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 students had to nominate to compete, and a Year 7 and 8 carnival, which was attended by all students in these year groups.

The merging of the two schools brought new school houses. Students and staff were asked for their input into house names throughout last year and the follow-ing were chosen:• Murray• Darling• Lachlan• Macquarie

The competitors only carnival was held on Friday in the first week of term. In total we had 31 competitors who nominated for multiple races throughout the carnival, with many students making it through to the zone level. The combined Year 7 and 8 Swimming Carnival was a full day event, held on Monday of Week 3. There were many events, both competitive and novelty, such as the Salmon Race (a continuous race for 8 minutes, in which each house gets a point for getting a student from one end to another) and the highly anticipated belly flop competition. At the conclusion of both car-nivals the winning house was Murray!

At the Zone Carnival in Narrandera in Week 4, MRHS won the overall carnival title, also taking out 7 of the 10 possible age champion titles, which was a fantastic effort. Many of our students progressed to the Riv-erina Carnival in Week 6, which was held in Leeton. We had outstanding results at the Riverina Carnival, with 10 individual students and a range of relay teams advancing to the NSW state level in Sydney, and even some records being smashed by MRHS students!

The impressive results and enjoyable days will hope-fully be an incentive for more competitors from Years 9-12 to nominate for events next year and increased participation in competitive events from Years 7 and 8.

Careers NewsYear 10 Careers classes are currently preparing for their work experience block in Term 2. This block will take place Monday 24th – Friday 28th June 2019 for Wade Site students, and Monday 3rd-7th June for Griffith Site students. Students are encour-aged to start planning their placement now, so they are organised when Weeks 6 & 9 come around and they do not miss out on a place. For more infor-mation or ideas about work experience and where to go, students are encouraged to speak with Mrs Sutton - Wade Site or Ms Ragusa - Griffith Site.

The White Card Course is being run on Monday the 8th April at the Wade Site for students needing the White Card for their work experience. There are limited places for this course so students are encouraged to return their permission notes and enrolment form and pay the enrolment fee to the Wade Front Office by Monday the 1st of April.

Year 11 Work StudiesYear 11 students are reminded that their 1st Assess-ment Task is due on Friday 10th of May. Students are reminded that they can see Mrs Sutton if they need assistance or advice completing the task.

Industry Exposure ToursThis Term we have run several Industry Tours which have proven to be most beneficial for stu-dents. Eclipse Essential Spa kindly opened their doors to take 2 groups on a tour of their very beautiful business. Students got an insight into the beauty industry, how a beauty business is run and what is involved with being a beauty therapist. Stu-dents also got to experience a manicure, which was definitely a highlight of the tour.

Collier and Miller also kindly opened their doors to take students on a tour of their extensive business place. Students were able to see the welding and fabrication side of Collier and Miller, along with the retail side of the business and heard first hand from staff working in the business.

The aim of our Industry Tours is to expose students to the wide variety of local business operating in and around our town. With this kind of knowl-edge, students are better equipped when it comes to arranging Work Experience, it also greatly assists students when making decisions about future career pathways.

For Career advice or information, Wade Site stu-dents can see Mrs Sutton in the Work Studies Office throughout the week or Mrs Bergamin in the Ca-reers Office on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays.

Don’t forget to check out the Wade Site Career web-site for up to date career information and advice. Students can also use this site to write resumes and job application letters. Go to: www.wadehighcareers.comYear 11 Girls experiencing manicure treatments
