Parent Information Evening
Starting at 6:30pm tonight we welcome Grade 6 students and their families to our Parent Information
Evening. The evening will start in our Gymnasium and be followed by a tour of the school. It is
always an exciting evening, welcoming new and familiar faces to our school community. If you have a
Grade 6 student and are unable to attend on Thursday evening, please make contact with our office
staff to organise a meeting.
On Tuesday (Grade 6 Boys) and Wednesday (Grade 6 Girls), students enjoyed a day at Camp
Clayton. The day consisted of different team challenges and gave all students a chance to build
friendships with students from other feeder primary schools. Our teachers were very pleased with
the positive relationships that have started to develop. If parents have any questions about our
Transition Program, please contact our Transition Coordinator, Mr Aaron Humphrey.
Issue No. 13

Redevelopment
On Tuesday, the classrooms at the bottom of C Block were opened up. Staff and students were
very excited about moving into the Grade 7 and Grade 8 teaching spaces. On top of this, our
internal courtyard is growing by the day, with VOS handing back sections as they become completed.
We expect that the Administration Block, Staffroom and High Performance Lab will be handed over
by the end of the term.
There are still a lot of minor finishing touches that need to be completed. Before the next
newsletter, I will have confirmation on whether we are able to proceed with the following
improvements:
New basketball court on the eastern side of the Gym
New Parking on the northern side of Admin and eastern side of our cooking classrooms
Electronic signage at the front of the school
New disability ramp and automatic doors at the front of the school
New grounds shed next to our Automotive Shed.

GRADE 7 REPORT
Our Grade 7 learning space is open! This new area has been signed over to the school with classes
beginning to settle in to the new rooms. Having our own individual classrooms enables us to provide
consistency to the students and assist those with anxiety or struggling with change.
Students have started their new ‘taster’ subjects this week and will remain in that subject area until
25 October.

GRADE 7 REPORT continued
Having listened to the students who assisted in the primary school visits, it was fantastic to hear how
much they are enjoying their time at Latrobe High School. Thank you to Aaliah Dennison, Hannah
Ryan, Ruby Gardner, Toby Rockliff, Campbell Moles, Lauren Kent, Aidyn Bryan, Rebecca
Whelan, Fabian Spratt, Coby Towns, Will Sanderson, Madeline Prentice, Charlotte Hinds,
Ashlea Dowling, Charlotte Woods, Cooper Armitstead, Lily Robinson, Liam Muir, Mia
Pitchford, Brayden Keep, Keisha Williams and Kirstie Whelan for your assistance!
This week we had our Camp Clayton activities for Grade 6 students (our Grade 7’s in 2018) which I am
sure all students in Grade 7 remember as a fantastic opportunity to meet new students and the teaching
staff at Latrobe High School. Thank you again to Jackson Mitchell, Flynn Saward, Campbell
Moles, Ryan Timmerman, Brayden Keep, Will Austin, Roman Jopson, Coby Towns and
Will Sanderson who assisted the boys on Tuesday; Charli Hingston, Aaliah Dennison,
Hannah Ryan, Lily Robinson, Keisha Williams, Sasha Cassidy, Katelyn Bell, Poppy Beswick,
Shelby Simpson, Jorja Masters, Montanah Duncombe and Ruby Gardner for assisting.

POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS
It was fantastic to see our Grade 7 leaders helping out at Camp Clayton and
forming positive relationships before next year. The leaders worked well with
the Grade 6’s and ensured everyone had a safe and enjoyable day.
LEARNING
Ashlea has demonstrated quite a flair for learning and
writing this week in English. Students were given a quick
writing warm activity in which Ashlea wrote an impressive 3 sentence description
of a storm:
‘The sound is deafening.
The rivers of rain are cascading down my window.
The air feels damp and restricting and I can smell the excitement of the next
lighting strike.
RESILIENCE
In English we have been writing narrative stories and initially Kaleb was very stuck
with ideas and didn’t think he could write a story. Despite feeling the task was too
difficult, Kaleb persevered and wrote a wonderful page long narrative with a twist.
His story included humour, friendship, chaos with carnage and then the narrator
woke up from their dream. Well done Kaleb!
RESPECT
With our new classrooms and courtyards available to us, it is an ample opportunity to work on
respecting our school and ensuring the environments are long-lasting. Students need to ensure they
don’t mark the walls, they put their chairs up after a lesson and they ensure they wipe their feet prior to
entering the classroom.

GRADE 8 REPORT
We are already halfway through Term 3 and it is really pleasing to note how well the Grade 8 year
group are performing in all facets of school life. Congratulations to the following students who have
received Strength Awards – well done and keep up the great work!
Asha Lamprey, Alanah Greaves (x2), Monique Steers, Ella Lamprey, Georgia Bryan, Jack
Donohoe, Maddison McClure, Levi Sheehan, Jaxon Sheehan (x2), Kelsey Hedditch, James
Carter (x2), Sammie Dick, Brielle Geard, Tess Horton, Oliver Lancaster, Jack Maynard,
Rhiannon Evans, Coco Blizzard, Quintin Walker, Dylan Bester, Jonte Armitstead, Rebekah
Bentley, Carl Agustin, Jack Huddlestone, Rhiannon Evans, Emma Fawkner (x2), Alina
Heine, Alyssa Oates and Indeah Kelly.
Resilience/Positive Relationships - Leadership Opportunity
The Grade 8 students have an opportunity to nominate themselves to be a student representative
member for the Latrobe High School’s School Association. The election will be by a secret ballot of
students in Grade 7, 8 and 9. The two grade 8 students with the highest votes will be selected. Students
who nominate must be aware of the following obligations:
They will be member of the association for their grade 9 and 10 years.
They will attend monthly meetings outside of school hours (6.30-8.30pm).
They will participate in these meetings by representing students’ views.
They will report to the student population in assembly about Association matters.
They will be a positive role model for other students and behave in manner that reflects our school
values and motto.
I encourage ALL students to consider this leadership opportunity.
Respect
Last Friday, the Junior Leadership Group ran a ‘Beanies for Brain Cancer’ day to raise funds for the Brain
Council Foundation. It was fantastic to see so many Grade 8 students supporting this cause, not to
mention the wonderful array of beanies that were worn. So thank you to the many students who made
donations and supported the cause – helping others really does make a difference!
Learning
This week has been long anticipated by the Grade 8 Humanities teaching team and students – the new
classrooms are up and running! It is exciting to see each stage of the redevelopment completed and
experience lessons in our new and very spacious learning areas.
Our focus learning area of the curriculum for this newsletter is English and the excellent work that has
been going on in the current Poetry Unit.

POETRY
In Grade 8 English this term we have been focusing on exploring a variety of poetry types and
experimenting with poetic devices such as alliteration, metaphors and hyperboles. Students have
produced a great deal of work that they should be proud of. They show deep thinking and powerful
personal voice. Super work grade 8, keep it up!

ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION
My Anxiety is back again, but this time, he bought a friend! This friend is
unwanted, his name is Depression, together they weigh on my shoulders
pulling me down until I am lost. Depression is like an unwanted guest at a
party, except I am the party!

POETRY continued
She stood out from the crowd because she didn’t feel as though she belonged.
The word beauty planted in her head until it overgrew her fragile mind, replaying an image in her head
over and over again.
Looking in the mirror, holding back a tear, but that tear was a tsunami of emotion.
She was drowning in her thoughts, each word putting another scar on her wrist.

GRADE 9 REPORT
On Friday 25 August, selected Grade 9 students participated in the Grade 9 Health Careers Interactive
Workshops. Students were involved in a series of hands-on workshops learning about professions in:
Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Oral Health, Social Work, Podiatry, Radiography, Occupational
Therapy, Pharmacy, Nursing, Medicine, Environmental Health, Paramedicine, Pathology and Psychology.
The students really enjoyed the day.
Resilience: When hard work pays off.
Congratulation to Ashtyn. Ashtyn’s coaches at NWUA nominated her to be
considered for a position on the National panel to umpire the National Female
Diversity Championships in Byron Bay in the second week of the October
holidays. They surprised her by announcing she was successful. She is one of two
Tasmanian girls to experience her first National Umpiring Position. Fantastic
work, Ashtyn.
Positive Relationships: Helping your peers.
Bailey is helping Billy to bend some metal in Metal
Work. Working as a team is a great way to build positive relationships with your
peers. It is also a great way to improve your own skills as well as developing
someone else’s.
Learning: A range of skills.
It is always great to walk into a classroom and see the range of skills that
students are developing while in class. Well done, keep it up.
Thank you for reading.

GRADE 10 REPORT
On Tuesday 5 September, all Grade 10 students will be going to Don College for Taster Day. This is the
first of two transition days organised with Don College. The second, Start Day, will occur in early
December. On Tuesday all Grade 10 students need to ensure that they arrive at Don College between
8.15 and 8.30. They should use the mode of transport that they plan on using in 2018 to get to Don
College.
Even if your child is thinking that they will be enrolling in TAFE or gaining an apprenticeship/traineeship,
they must attend Taster Day as it is a compulsory school day. This will be a very important step in the
transition process for all students. Please ask your child about the subjects they are looking to taste at
Don, as it is important you are aware of their choices
If you have any queries regarding your child, please contact me on 6426 1061 or via email:

SOCCER
The 2017 School Soccer season has come to a close with fantastic results from all age groups. In the boys
roster, we had both an u/14 and an u/16 team entered. The boys fought hard throughout the season with
the u/14 boys finishing above their Reece High counterparts to now be involved in the North West Cup
game against Parklands High School at a later date. The u/16 team finished narrowly behind their Reece
High opposition to narrowly miss out on a game against Marist College. This result is the opposite from
the 6 a side soccer where the senior boys were victorious and the juniors just missing out.
In the girls roster, all teams are u/16 teams. We had one team with mostly Grade 8
and 9’s (Latrobe Blue) and another team with a combination of all grades (Latrobe
Red). Both teams were the strongest in the competition, with Latrobe Blue going
undefeated all season again (second year running) and Latrobe Red only losing one
game. Latrobe Blue will now be aiming to emulate last year and win the North West
Cup again against Parklands High School (2 goals to 1 last year).
The teams for the majority of the season were as follows:
U/14 boys- Coen Fidler, Chad Wyllie, Campbell Moles, Toby Rockliff, Jack Darby, Cooper Armitstead,
Eden Hudson, Aidyn Bryan, Will Sanderson, Ty Burnell and Sebastian Bloore. Isaac Bieman and Roman
Jopson also played some games for the team. Thanks to Jason Wyllie for coaching.
U/16 boys- Bailey Kelly, Charlette Barwick-Wilson, Alex Cooper, Magnus Overdijk, Ryan Connelly,
Jayden Morrison, Cameron Wyatt, Billy Thorne and Kaleb Barwick-Wilson. Thank you to Aleesha
Tutt for coaching the team.
Latrobe Blue girls: Hollie Dobson, Lily Blackaby, Molly Carter, Demi Nicholls, Febey Mitchell, Abbey
Ayers, Olivia Smith, Ava Wyllie, Courtney Bieman, Tess Horton, Arabella Catlin, Piper Catlin and Ashlee
Woolley. Thank you to Chloe Nicholls and Aaron Humphrey for coaching.
Latrobe Red girls: Alanah Greaves, Kate Chaplin, Megan Hedditch, Montana Lewis, Maddison McClure,
Charlotte Hinds, Ella Lamprey, Shelby Simpson, Renee Flack, Amber Hall, Asha Lamprey, Belle Needham
and Sasha Cassidy. Thank you to Rhonda Hall for coaching.
Photos from the season will be shared at a later date.
HPE CLASSES
Currently in Health, we are studying and researching about relationships and sexuality. Students have
been asking some great questions and have held great discussions. In Physical Education, we are currently
in a Winter Sports unit with students playing Football, Soccer, Netball or Hockey. Students will be
outside for these sports and need to remember a change of clothes, spare socks and spare shoes.
HPE HOTSPOT continued
FOOTBALL: Congratulations to Georgia (youth girls) and Blake (under 16 Boys) for winning their best and fairest for football this season. Lily and James were runners-up in the same age groups! Well done to all Latrobe Demons players on a great season.
UMPIRING:
Congratulations to Ashtyn who has been selected as
one of only two Tasmanians to travel to Byron Bay to
umpire the National AFL Female Diversity
Championships in October.
A fantastic opportunity to showcase her endurance and
umpiring skills!
Ashtyn has improved throughout the season and is
currently securing State League games which is a fantastic
achievement.
CYCLING:
Congratulations to Cameron who has been selected in the
Tasmanian U/17 State team to race at the National Championships
in the Time Trial, Road Race and the Criterium.
The championships start on Friday 1 September. Cameron has been
selected based on his recent winter form, with his most recent
victory in the u/17 category coming on Saturday in a 66km race from
Deloraine to Launceston.
BEANIES 4 BRAIN CANCER
Last Friday students from Miss Overall’s Junior Leadership class held a Beanies 4 Brain Cancer day
where students and staff wore a beanie to school for the day for a gold coin donation to support
people suffering from Brain Cancer. The participation from students, staff and tradies was fantastic and
as a school community we were able to raise $286.50. We would like to thank all students and staff
who participated, as well as a huge thank you to the Vos Construction workers who happily wore
their beanies and donated to a fantastic cause! All money raised will be given to the Cure Brain
Cancer Foundation. Our next event will be a White Ribbon Day on Friday 8 September with a focus
on raising awareness of men’s violence against women. Stay tuned for more information.
