4R and 6M STEM The plan for Year 4 students from Mrs Ryan’s class and Year 6 students from Mr Metliss’ class was to have three great days together whilst Year 5 students went to camp. Not to be derailed by no camp, while Year 5 students played on the back oval on Monday, the Year 4 and 6 students catapulted their way through STEM (science, technology, English and mathematics) activities. They had to collaborate in small groups to build, test and modify a catapult, recording the results of the item they catapulted. So much fun!

I take pleasure and pride in regularly observing engaging teaching and learning taking place across the school. Students in 4S and 4D were thinking very creatively in engineering a roadway to transport marbles. They really got on a roll with that task. The students were working in teams and no two teams had the exact same solution. Students in 3/4M and 4T were demonstrating fantastic reading skills through a reciprocal reading activity. Their clarification of vocabulary and discussion regarding themes and open ended questions demonstrated higher order thinking. Most pleasing, I have observed outstanding school citizenship by student’s peer support of students with learning adjustments. I am confident that it is the combination of team effort, quality and care that makes Engadine West Public School’s learning culture so strong. Ross Edwards Deputy Principal

Deputy Principal’s Report

Commemoration of ANZAC Ceremony On Sunday 14 April 2019, the Engadine RSL Sub-Branch will be hosting their annual march through the main street and into the town square of Engadine. The march will be followed by a service in the town square. Engadine West PS will be participating in the march. All students in Kindergarten to Year 6 are welcome to participate. Students are to meet Mrs Weppler in the park at the top of the main street, next to the top chemist, at 1.45pm. Students participating in the march will be required to wear their full summer school uniform. There will be no official school participation on ANZAC Day during the holidays. Students are more than welcome to attend the dawn service at 5.30am on Wednesday 25 April 2019 in the town square. Karen Weppler SRC Coordinator

On Tuesday April 9 2019, our environment leaders will be participating in a worm farm workshop. This workshop will run for approximately one hour during the morning. Our leaders will be involved in re-establishing our worm farm colony and learning how to feed and maintain this colony. Leaders may bring a pair of gardening gloves. It is also advisable for them to wear gardening clothes to school in the morning and bring their uniforms to change into after the workshop. They will also need to wear heavy footwear or gumboots. Janet Evans and Sian Morgan Class teachers

Paul Kelly Cup On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of taking two Engadine West PS AFL teams to compete at the Paul Kelly Cup. Both teams were the champions of their pools and made it through to the finals! The boys were beaten by the eventual winners of the day and the girls almost completed a great comeback in their semi-final. I was very proud of all the players as they displayed outstanding sportsmanship, utmost respect for their umpires and opponents and most importantly, had a smile on their faces all day. Thankyou to all parents who came out to support the kids. What an outstanding effort from kids who had never played Aussie Rules football before! Mr Herne

Year 5 Band - Badge Presentation Congratulations to our talented Year 5 band students who will be presented with their badges at the Years 3 to 6 assembly tomorrow, Friday 5 April 2019 (Week 10) at 2.15pm in the hall.

This year we will be holding our special celebration for Easter on Thursday 11 April 2019 from 11.15am until approximately 1.15pm. We invite parents, grandparents and friends to come along and join in the festivities. Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 are asked to make (with the help of mum or dad) an Easter hat for our parade. The hat could be based on the theme Easter or maybe a favourite character from a book or television program that your children like to watch. Easter masks are also a good idea. Be as creative as you like. Students in Years 3 and 4 are asked to make ‘eggs on legs’ for the parade. These are cardboard, decorated egg shaped panels that can be worn on the chest of students to give them the appearance of walking Easter eggs. Students in Years 5 and 6 are asked to make an egg diorama. Students can choose an “eg………” or “ex………” word and turn it into an “egg”. For example-eggsample: Edwards-Eggwards, execution-eggsecution, extreme-eggstreme, explode-eggsplode, exterminate-eggsterminate, excite-eggcite etc. Students are asked to build an egg diorama that portrays the “egg” word as a theme. The “eggsibition” will be on display in the school hall. The parade/eggsibition is not a competition and we encourage all students to participate. Students can come to school dressed in mufti clothes with suitable footwear for parading around the asphalt playground. No thongs or singlet tops are to be worn please. Please remember that we are a nut aware school and refrain from using nuts or nut products in your decorations. Help to keep our school safe for everyone! The students will begin the parade under the COLA at around 12.00pm. Recess will be from 11.15am until 11.45am. Parents and visitors will be able to purchase food and drinks from the canteen. The P&C will be selling raffle tickets and the raffle will be drawn during the parade. We are asking for donations of Easter eggs, baskets or made up baskets containing Easter goodies wrapped in clear cellophane for the raffle. Donations can be left at the school office.

We look forward to seeing you at school for an eggciting day!
