Mr Baker and Mr Zubcic run a sport program each Monday, Wednesday and Friday before school—it was great to see so many students join in soccer this morning.

PRINCIPAL MESSAGE CONTINUED
We had 12 senior students head off for 10 days to Somers Camp yesterday. This camp experience is offered to students from schools at various times throughout the year. Each school is offered one opportunity per year. Local geographical catchment areas are kept together so students from local schools get to share the experience. If you have a child in grade 4 or grade 5 this year, keep a look out for the information that comes out at the end of the year for the 2020 Somers Camp opportunity.
Our School Council has its first meeting for 2019 next week with the AGM scheduled for next month. We will be looking for new parents to fill a couple of vacancies. School Council meets once a month at school at 7.00pm. If you are interested and would like to know more about how you can get involved to support our school an information session will be held this Friday at 2.15pm before assembly in the staff room.
School Councils have three main responsibilities:
finance: overseeing the development of the school’s annual budget and ensuring proper records are kept of the school’s financial operation
strategic planning: participating in the development and monitoring of the school strategic plan
policy development and review: developing, reviewing and updating policies that reflect a school’s values and support the school’s broad direction outlined in its strategic plan.
Other key functions of School Councils include:
raising funds for school related purposes
maintaining school grounds and facilities
entering into contracts
reporting annually to the school community and the Department
creating interest in the school in the wider community
representing and taking the views of the community into account
regulating and facilitating after-hours use of school premises and grounds
operating a children’s service at the school

Curriculum
Reading at home A key component to the development of a child’s reading ability is practice! Being able to practise their reading strategies at home with you provides your child with a supportive and comfortable environment, where they feel safe to make mistakes as they improve their reading skills and comprehension ability. To enable our students to achieve their best possible learning outcomes, and to support you in helping your child to improve their reading, we are making some changes to our Home Reading program. Sign your child’s diary each time they read with you at home. Teachers will check for parent signature – if it is not there, then teachers will assume that your child has not been reading at home. Remind your child to take their Take Home Book, Student Diary and Book Bag to school every day – they need their book at school to read during Sustained Reading.

Student Medical Expenses
Purpose of this policy To clarify responsibility for student medical expenses.
Policy The cost of any medical attention or ambulance for a student will be borne by the parent/guardian. Parents are liable for all medical expenses incurred as a result of student injury, including transport costs such as ambulance or air ambulance costs. This applies unless the injury occurs as a result of a negligent act or omission on the part of the Department, its employees, servants or agents, in which case the Department will consider whether it is liable to reimburse the parents for expenses reasonably incurred. Principals must:
use their judgment as to what action to take in cases of a student’s accident or sudden illness
contact the parent/guardian immediately if any doubt exists as to what action should be taken
call an ambulance whenever there is a medical emergency (see: Emergency medical situations)
refer any claim for damages or reimbursement received by staff or the school to [email protected] or mail to:
Legal Division, Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, Ground Level, East Wing, 2 Treasury Place, East Melbourne, 3002.
Emergency medical situations If a student is ill or injured, it is preferable to contact the parents in order that they can seek whatever medical attention they feel is appropriate. However, in an emergency a principal may:
The legal authority to do this arises from the principle of “agency of necessity”. This means that the law recognises that the authority to act on another’s behalf is implied in case of emergency. An ambulance should always be called in a medical emergency.
Disputed expenses If a principal, acting in good faith, calls for medical assistance without first consulting the parents and a dispute then arises as to liability for the cost of the medical care, the Department will relieve the principal of all financial responsibility. Under no circumstances is there to be any admission, offer, promise or payment made in connection with such a claim by school staff. If a principal receives a request for reimbursement of ambulance expenses, they should forward the request to Legal Division. The Principal will then be contacted by a representative of the Department for more information about the circumstances surrounding the request.
Parent Communication – Ambulance Cover/Costs Schools should strongly encourage parents to have up-to-date ambulance cover and should also inform parents that they are responsible for any medical expenses such as ambulance costs incurred if their child is injured or requires an ambulance at school, or whilst participating in a school activity.
call an ambulance or
call for any necessary medical attention on behalf of the student’s parents.
