2P Editing When I visited 2P, Mrs Piccoli and her class family, were busily editing a shared piece of writing. She was encouraging the students to be writing detectives, challenging them to look for incorrect punctuation, grammar and spelling. They were so engaged and very clever at solving all of the challenges.

1B Writing Miss Blower and her students were identifying nouns, verbs and adjectives in shared reading texts, as a class, and then individually. They were so excited to share their learning with me.

Year 1 Author Visit A big thank you to Miss Ninness and Gabby Lebrun for organising the Year 1 sto-ryboard author visit from the Byron Bay writers festival. Our students were so blessed to learn from a real life author. She shared her inspiration for writing, prompts and props, wisdom and tips with our kids. The students’ completed writ-ing was a testament to her techniques. Every child left as an author, wearing a lanyard to prove it. Lola was so proud to share her story with me.

Stage 2 Drumming Last week Mr O’Dwyer and Stage 2 lured me to the hall with their rhythmic drumming. It was so inspiring to hear, and even more inspirational to participate. Our kids were so keen to share their new learning with me. It was a very powerful and empowering experience. Thank you for sharing your gifts Mr O’Dwyer.

Stage 3 Maths Students in Stage 3 have been exploring 3D shapes. They have been investigating, classifying and com-paring prisms and pyramids, as well as making models and drawing 3D plans. Check out some of their achievements.

Stage 2 Writing In Stage 2 our students have been planning, drafting, writing and editing their persuasive texts about why tourists should visit Byron Bay. The language features used in their brochures’ is impressive. I’m hooked.

Stage 2 Writing Continued

Year 4 Angles In Year 4 Mathematics the students have been investigating the angles in our school environment. Research shows that making connections with real life is integral to effective mathematics learning and teaching.

Thank you Thank you to our inspirational teachers who make learning real and so engaging for our kids. We really appreciate you knowing your students so well, your energy, enthusiasm and love of learning. To our parents, grandparents and carers who share their gifts and time with our school family, we really appreciate all that you do. Happy Holidays Wishing you and your family a restful and rejuvenating break. We look forward to seeing your smiling fac-es next Term. Warm Regards, Lisa Conte Leader of Pedagogy

Conflict resolution

As the year progresses and social dynamics shift continuously, it can be timely to remind our kids about friendships. No parent likes to hear at the end of the day that their child has been involved in social con-flict. However this can be seen as an opportunity rather than a dilemma. All friendships have challenges, and conflict resolution is a developed social skill. If your child is discuss-ing social conflict, here are some ideas to help increase their conflict resolution skills: - First hear their perspective and acknowledge the emotion that presents e.g. "I understand you felt sad and left out when your friend told you to go away". - Ask them then to think about their friend’s perspective e.g. "I wonder how your friend was feeling today, were they having any problems?" - Encourage them to be resilient, be assertive, communicate your feelings and possibly move on and play with someone else- giving that friendship some time to chill (we can still have love for our friends when we are having a rest). - Encourage them to be strong bystanders, to stand up to injustice, in line with their personal and school values. No one is exempt from friendship challenges, they are an opportunity to learn and practice new skills. Please remind your children that the teachers are a support network they can always access as well as myself. Shannan Goodwin

Summer Sports Nominations 2017/18

Students from Year 4 & 5 will be able to nominate for the 2017/18 Summer Sports Trials on the school website, Term 4, week 1. The sports available include tennis, basketball, cricket, touch & softball. Your child should be competent with the rules & skills of their chosen sport and ideally competing at a repre-sentative level.

Surf Safe

Stage 2 & 3 will be participating in the Surf Safe program for sport next term. We will be conducting a 50m swimming trial in Week 2 after the holidays to ensure the safety and eligibility of all students intend-ing to be involved in the program. It may be a good idea to encourage your child to do some swimming during the holidays to ensure they can competently swim the required distance.

Drum lessons will be resuming at St Finbarr’s School as soon as we have enough enrolments to make it viable for our tutor Peter Jaggle to recommence. Lessons will hopefully starting in the first week of term 4.

Here are some small excerpts from Peter’s formidable resume.

Peter holds a degree in music composition from UNE and has written five rhythm based tutorial books including a mammoth encyclopedia of rhythm notation, he has conducted workshops all over Australasia and internationally and performed with Top line Australian and International Art-ists.

He is also the founder / conductor / tutor of the Young Drums School of Percussion and Perfor-mance and the Young Drums Percussion Orchestra both of which he directed for one and a half decades. The orchestra (average age 13 yrs) represented Australia at more than ten inter-national events performing to over a quarter of a million people live at various major venues and events and to more than 200 million viewers on live international television.

Peters teaching methods have been endorsed and supported by some of percussion’s biggest names, Dom Famularo (Billed as the World’s #1 Percussion Educator and Motivator) and inter-national companies, Zildjian Cymbals USA, PREMiER Percussion of the UK, SABIAN Cymbal Makers of Canada, MEINL Percussion of Germany, Mapex drums of Japan, TOCA percus-sion of USA and ECODRUMS of Australia among others.

More recently he created his Percussion Garden concept that includes original shows, ‘Music from the Percussion Garden,’ ‘Shaman’ ‘The Rhythm of Everything’ and ‘Elements’, using up to 75 Singers and musicians with scores composed by himself with Choral arrangements by Pro-fessor Michael Hannan.

However, the Percussion Garden is much more than just shows, it is a Company with aims to nurture, grow and promote the percussive arts in the Northern area of the State to the widest de-mographic including, Children of all ages, Older people, Disabled, (Peter worked at Multitask run-ning a Drum Circle with a severely disabled class), Indigenous and Ethnic Communities, Women and people of all backgrounds.

As an aspect of this project he has developed an exciting new Japanese Taiko program for schools, working with children from Pre-school through to High School, the program is already being strongly booked and is receiving much acclaim from Principals, Teachers and students alike.

Peter was presented with the inaugural NCEIA “Contributions to the Entertainment Industry Award” and an Australia Award for Cultural Arts achievement.

Currently he is also working as a music teacher traveling all over the Northern part of the state working for various private and public schools. Two of his local regional students have achieved top 5 places in the 2012 and 2013 National “Up and Coming Drummers Competition” and one a winner in the Drum solo competition! He has former students performing all over the world with major orchestras and bands and one with a Grammy Award to his credit!
