“Caring for Excellence”

End of Term: After a very busy term which has ended with the Year 10 stu-

dents out on Work Experience and the Year 9s in Queensland on

their activity camp this week, the time has come for a welcome

break. For Year 12s, it can be only be a short break as once we

resume on July, 13th, they have just three months to work to-

wards their best possible ATAR. It is a very short span of time

but an important one, as this is very much about creating oppor-

tunities for the future. The future beyond the College is looming

fast and they need to realize this.

Reports:

Reports will be available on Compass today from 2pm. Report

Coordinator, Mrs Emma Ford will be emailing out instructions

for accessing the reports on Compass.

We hope parents sit down with their child or children and go

through these reports carefully to celebrate the triumphs and to

examine areas for improvement. The next Student/Parent/

Teacher Conference will take place on 3rd of September but if

there is concern, please do not hesitate to contact the College.

Upcoming Key Events: Once back on Monday, July 13th, we are in for an action-packed

start to term, with three significant events following each other:

Number 20 ~ June 26, 2015 NEWSLETTER:

Presentation Ball - The Year 11 Presentation Ball candidates are practising their dance routines and

gearing up for their big night on Saturday, 8th August. Mrs Lynette Matthew reported that they are do-

ing really well at rehearsals so we are looking forward to celebrating their grand night at the Centre

Ivanhoe. We urge family and friends to come along and support them as this is a great Year 11 commu-

LOTE Theatre - The senior LOTE students are preparing for their madcap night of linguistic fun

where Australian pop culture is converted into Japanese and German. Some how it all takes on a life of

its own but no matter the change in language, very little really gets lost in translation. The best thing is

seeing our senior language students having fun in their LOTE learning. Friends of Viewbank are sup-

porting the evening by providing a wonderful LOTE supper of sushi and rice crackers and of course,

delicious ‘ kuchen’ or cakes. It is a great night for Middle Years students to come along to see the fun of

College Production - It goes without saying, the whole College looks forward each year to the College

Production week. After meeting with the production team, and also talking with Year 12s in the cast,

there is such an enthusiastic vibe. I get the feeling that Viewbank College will do Mel Brooks, ‘The

Producers’ proud. Ex student Brett Schembri, from Ray White Real Estate Agency in Macleod, has

kindly produced our advertising board at the front of the College and at the Banyule Theatre, so that our

local community can read all about the show. Do not leave ticket purchases to the last minute as tickets

Community Forum Evening:

On the 2nd June, the community came together for the Community Forum evening and I have already thanked

all those who attended. We sought feedback about our Compass communication system and the feedback was

useful. We will be having a meeting with John De La Motte from Compass and the feedback will be used as a

focus on what our community values and what improvements they spoke about on the evening. The major fo-

cus was on generating community discussion towards establishing future priorities for special College projects.

The College Council Blueprint of 2011 has served the College beautifully in establishing the priorities which

have translated into the current Performing Arts/Admin/Music Project. Prior to the June 2nd evening, the staff

had been asked to prioritise areas for improvement and we used this as a prompt for discussion on the night. In

terms of future planning for infrastructure, there were very useful insights from the community evening that

were different to staff ideas. This material is being synthesized under the three main categories:

Long Term planning of future infrastructure ($100,000 +++). This would necessitate external funding.

Intermediate ($50,000 - $100,000).

Short Term ($25,000 - $50,000).

From the feedback, the Building and Grounds, sub-committee of Council has already identified the major pri-

ority areas for long-term planning that will be the feature of new College Blueprint. Please note that these are

long-term projects to be worked towards once the current project is achieved. They are:

Priority 1: Upgrade Science Facilities.

Priority 2: VCE Facility- Top floor of Library.

Priority 3: Replacement of old relocatables with permanent classrooms.

Priority 4: Upgraded Sporting Facilities-astro turf for soccer field /Gym extension / possible shelter

over the lower basketball courts.

Priority 5: Refurbishment of the Thomson Theatre for specialist provision.of curriculum if the College

retains this facility.

As there is a wealth of material that has come in from staff and the community evening, it will be further sorted

and prioritized under the two remaining headings and will form the focus of internal College projects that the

Buildings and Grounds sub-committee will oversee. I will give an update for each of the two categories in fu-

ture newsletters.

Very few College or schools entertain the thought of community forums but a strength of Viewbank College is

the interest, goodwill and collective wisdom of our parents, teachers and students. Thank you to all those who

attended and particularly, the College Councillors and the Leading Teachers who led table discussions.

Going forward -

Continue synthesis of feedback - prioritise minor works for the 2016 budget.

Prioritise Intermediate projects.

The Buildings and Grounds will draw up the next College Blue Print by Term 4.

J Block Courtyard Locker Bay:

At last, this week has seen the start of the construction of the J Block Courtyard Locker Bay with the raising of

very large steel girders. The lockers that have been placed in storage due to the unforseen delays, are in readi-

ness to be installed after the completion of the project. I am sure our Year 9 and 10 boys will welcome their

new facility in early Term 3.

Student Leadership:

Out of Uniform Day - Last Friday, 19th June, the SRC ran an Out-of-Uniform Day to raise money to assist

the with Nepalese recovery from the devastating the earthquake. The SRC designated that the majority of the

money would go to this very worthy cause and that a small amount would be put aside towards a College pro-

ject that they and Friends of Viewbank are working on. The desire is to provide shelter in the Year 7 court-

yard area. The total amount raised was $1844.15 and from that, $1500 will be donated to the Nepal Earth-

quake Appeal with the balance going towards the Year 7 shade structure.

Parliament House - On Tuesday 23rd, it was a pleasure to take College Captains, Georgia Rutland and An-

drew Vassett to Parliament House at the invitation of Ms Mary Wooldridge, Leader of Opposition Business

and Mr Bruce Atkinson, Speaker of the Legislative Council - for the Upper House of the Victorian Parliament.

They are MLCs for the Eastern Metropolitan Region and their combined Upper House constituencies range

from the base of the Dandenongs to Viewvbank. This function for School Captains was to provide an oppor-

tunity for young leaders to see the Legislative Council in session and to tour Parliament House. It was a won-

derful opportunity to see the beauty of the Victorian Parliamentary building and to learn that it is gradually

being restored to its former glory which was erected out of the wealth of the Victorian Gold Rush. We saw

both houses, the chambers of the current opposition, the magnificent Library and toured the underground pas-

sages which are in fact under the great basalt steps that lead up to the building. Our parliamentarians have of-

fices under there and in little nooks, crannies and towers all over the building and they have exactly three

minutes once the bells are rung, to get into the chamber or be locked out. The narrow winding stairs do not

make it an easy dash at any time, our hosts explained. We watched the Upper House come back in after ad-

journment and watched the antics of the Upper House, as a member was giving her address. In assemblies,

awards ceremonies and public speaking finals, our students know how to listen to each other and are generally

respectful, so Andrew, Georgia and I were quite shocked that this poor woman who had the floor, representing

her Bendigo constituency, was being ignored. Conversations were taking place all over the chamber or she

experienced, unhelpful interjections. The Acting Speaker was listening but not bringing the others to order. It

was hard not to reflect on the time that member put into writing her speech and how it was an exercise in futili-

ty. The experience was excellent and we thank these politicians for their kind offer. Andrew and Georgia

were fabulous company and the three of us had a brilliant evening.

Science Leaders - Big Scope Science at Viewbank College

Two VCE students, Natasha Mohamad-Daniel of Year 11 and Sam Feeger of Year 12 are impressively repre-

senting the College’s Science Domain beyond the College. Sam Feeger, who came into the College, at the

start of this year from Horsham, attended the National Youth Science Forum which was held at the Australian

National University in Canberra. This program is open to Year 11 students around the country and consists of

2 weeks living on campus, attending lectures, debates and some of Australia’s biggest and best science facili-

ties in both the public and private sectors. The program also consists of several personal and social develop-

ment events with Australia’s leading scientists, science bodies and politicians. As a NYSF Alumni, Sam has

now applied for and been selected to represent Australia at the 2015 London International Youth Science Fo-

rum. He will be taking up residence at Imperial College London for two weeks, whilst participating in the fo-

rum alongside 400 of the world’s most passionate science students. Sam leaves for London on the 21st of July

and we wish him safe travel and an amazing learning experience. Sam has the amazing opportunity to build up

contacts across the globe. As a response to his Canberra experience, Sam has promoted the NYSF to Year 11

Science students and Natasha Mohamed–Daniels of Year 11, is applying for the National Youth Science Fo-

rum which will be held is to be held in January 2016 at the Australian National University in Canberra. We

wish Natasha every success in achieving a place in the program.

Friends of Music: Autumn Festival: After the excellent Autumn Festival, with the combined excellence of the students and staff of the Instrumental

Music Program and the parents of Friends of Music, I would like to report that the final fund-raising for the

Autumn Brunch was $5,094.61 and for the Autumn Night was $2,596.18. The total of $7691 was a record for

the Autumn Festival and the Friends of Music Parent Group should be very proud of their efforts as should our

Music students and staff.

To all students, staff and their families we wish everyone a safe and relaxing break in order to reboot for Term

3.

On Tuesday, Stephanie Moorehouse, an Olympic Gymnast spoke to the Year 11 Health classes about her expe-

riences as an Olympian. It was a great opportunity to hear about an elite athletes training, the drug testing, di-

et, sacrifices and all the ups and downs of being a professional athlete. The Year 11 Health classes got to hold

her gold medals and to ask questions relevant to their present course work. Thank you to the Australian Olym-

pic Committee for organising Stephanie to speak the students.

Years 10 - 12 Holiday Study Program

In addition to enjoying spending some time away from the routine of school, students are expected to

undertake a program of study during each term holiday. Please reinforce with students the importance of

ensuring that their holidays include an effective study program. The purpose of this study is to reinforce

their understanding of concepts and material covered, and to support their preparation for end of year

examinations

In each subject, students are encouraged to:

Consolidate their understanding of work covered to date by organising their notes, reviewing class

work and completing summaries

Review and reflect on their progress to date, especially in light of the recent Exam Week

In particular, Units 3/4 students are encouraged to complete relevant sections of past external exam

papers, available from the VCAA website. Whilst textbooks are good at explaining concepts and

building on skills, there is no better revision tool than past exam papers. Only by doing these, will

students be exposed to the variety of questions they will encounter in their end of year exams and

be able to practise and build on their skills.

Determine their personal goal/s for each subject eg. keeping up to date with class preparation, on-

going refinement of summary notes, forming a study group or setting coursework goals, examina-

tion goals and end of year results goals.

Living Spirit Fellowship 2015 - 2016

The purpose of the Fellowship is to nurture in young people in our local community an understanding of

the role that many Australians played in securing the great freedom that we enjoy today. The Fellowship

enables a secondary student, with a parent, to visit an historic off~shore war location where Australians

have sacrificed their lives.

Year 8 News

Mt Buller Daytrip 2015

During Term 3 the Year 8 Cohort will have the opportunity for an exciting day trip to Mt Buller

Alpine Resort. Students will learn either Skiing or Snowboarding in a 1.5 hour lesson and then

spend the afternoon on the slopes with their classmates 8A to 8D will attend on the Thursday 27th

August and then 8E to 8H will attend on Friday 28th August.

Trip cost is $200 and includes coach travel, gate entry, 1.5 hour lesson, lift ticket, ski/snowboard

hire, boots, helmet, wrist guards. This payment, plus any additional equipment hire cost is due on

Friday 31st July and can be paid on Compass. Please note that Ski Jacket and Ski Pants can be

hired and this requires a separate form that is attached on the following page.

Itinerary 5:45am Students arrive at the College for a sharp 6am departure (No Waiting!)

8.00am Toilet stop in Mansfield.

9:30am-11.00am At Buller Sports (Mt Buller Village), students collect equipment.

11:30am to 1.00pm Ski or Snowboard lesson.

1.00pm to 1:45pm Lunch at the ABOM restaurant.

1:45pm to 4:15pm Free Ski/Board time with supervising teacher.

4:15pm Students return their equipment at Mt Buller Village.

5.00pm Bus leaves for Yea.

7.00pm – 7:45pm Dinner in Yea.

7:45pm Bus leaves for Viewbank College and returns between 8:30 and 9pm.

Due to the changing nature of alpine weather, all of the following equipment is compulsory

regardless of the weather forecast.

Waterproof ski jacket and ski pants. Mt Buller do hire out a jacket and pants for $36.

Performance at Heidelberg Uniting Church

Thank you to Mr van Gemert and the students who performed at the Heidelberg Uniting Church recently.

The audience thoroughly enjoyed the variety of music that was performed.

A.M.E.B (Australian Music Examination Board)

Please note that the enrolment date for the last session of AMEB exams for the year is Monday of the sec-

ond week of term 3. Any students wishing to enrol for an A.M.E.B exam should speak to their music

teacher before enrolling. These external exams give students a goal to work towards and are an experience

that enhances their playing/singing skills immensely. Enrolment forms are available from the Music Of-

In the last weeks of term, the Senior LOTE rooms, after the demands of exams, start resounding with the sound of Abba and the Spice Girls

and many others, which have been carefully translated into Japanese or German

in readiness for the LOTE Theatre Restaurant - a great event which this year celebrates its 22nd Anniversary.

It will be held on the evening of Thursday 23rd July at 7.30pm in the Banyule Theatre,

and not only provides superb entertainment, but also delicious food. Both Sushi and delicious Kaffee and Kuchen will be served at interval.
