Round Midnight’s powerhouse performance at the 2013 Princeton Festival showed why they’ve also sung at Carnegie Hall. Back by popular demand!

Gene Simmons of KISS called Blue Jupiter “the real deal,” and NBC’s Jane Pauley says they’re “incredible.” Harmonies backed by a beatbox work pure magic on stage.

About Porgy and BessGeorge Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess is his only large-scale operatic work and was his most ambitious composition. One wonders what else he might have written had he lived longer than age 37!

Porgy and Bess is considered one of the most important American operas, but since its premiere in 1935, it has defied being neatly categorized—it is both an opera and a musical, and it melds musical elements drawn from jazz, popular music, spirituals and the western European classical tradition. It is Gershwin’s most sophisticated score, using musical techniques like the recitative, passacaglia, fugue, polyrhythms, polytonality and the leitmotif. With all this sophisticated craftsmanship and showstopping tunes, Porgy and Bess appeals to the layman and the connoisseur alike.

Whether you remember the titles of all the songs or not, chances are you’ll be humming along as we journey with the residents of Catfish Row on a tale of love, compassion, jealousy, manipulation, revenge and devotion!

porgy and Bess: the Opera

porgy and Bess: a musical kaleidoscopeTimothy Urban, Professor of Music, Rider University

George Gershwin’s classic 1935 opera Porgy and Bess has been called an “American folk opera,” a “jazz opera,” a “blues opera,” and a musical theater show. This diversity shows the wide-ranging musical styles Gershwin employed in its creation. The history of the show, its music and its creators, and its rise to fame will also be discussed.

Tuesday June 10 at 7pm West Windsor LibraryThursday June 19 at 7:30pm Princeton Public Library illustrating life in the American south before porgy and BessMarianne Grey, Docent at the Princeton University Art Museum

Porgy, Bess, and all the residents of Charleston’s Catfish Row are creatures of fiction. Their stories are based on truth and history, though there is much debate about the authenticity of the opera. Marianne Grey will show us artists’ representations of Negro life in the American South from colonial times to the 1920s. The attractions of the Harlem Renaissance that lured them North will also be considered.

bring my goat! Joseph Horowitz, American Cultural Historian and Concert Producer

Joseph Horowitz is the author of seven books on American Music including his latest, “On My Way”: The Untold Story of Rouben Mamoulian, George Gershwin, and ‘Porgy and Bess.’ The recent opening of the Mamoulian Archives at the Library of Congress has shown that Mamoulian made major contributions to the opera we now see. These contributions expand our knowledge of the opera and the possible ways to stage or interpret it. Mr. Horowitz will illustrate these ideas by discussing Mamoulian’s addition of the words “bring my goat,” voiced by Porgy in the moving closing scene of the opera. As Porgy prepares to leave for New York with his goat, the community ecstatically sings “Oh Lawd, I’m on my way.” This lecture is sponsored jointly with the Princeton Public Library.
